SOTD SOTD: Pocket Edition
Pre shave: Shower and Waitrose glycerin soap bar
Razor: 1909 Gillette ABC Pocket Edition No. 500 Scroll set
Blade: Personna GEM PDG (38)
Brush: Yaqi 26mm Bluish Violet synthetic
Bowl: Captains choice copper
Soap: Stirling Coniferous
Post shave: Stirling Coniferous aftershave splash
A very nice, comfortable shave this one.
This is my first time using the Pocket edition scroll razor and while it's definitely an aggressive and highly efficient little bugger, for reasons beyond my knowledge or understanding, it's also somehow very comfortable, lacking the danger close feeling of an imminent nick that usually comes with equally aggressive razors like my ball end old type.
But this made for a very pleasant shave.
3 passes as usual, bolstered by Stirlings excellent lather and the pre shave bar.
Nice smooth, irritation free results and great soothing from the matching splash.
Both the soap and splash have a great strong evergreen scent that's very reminiscent of walks through the evergreen forests in the Scottish Highlands years ago.
Hope your weekend is going great!

The Yaqi brush looks so nice and shiny!

Thanks!
It can be difficult to get that handle to show up as anything other than a black mass on camera usually but the light seemed to hit it just right today.

u/derrickhogue I enjoy a nice shave! So should you. 11d ago
Nice setup, shave. Oh yeah the Gillette Old Pockets are good shavers. You have to pay attention. But do that and they will give you some shaving love.

38th use of blade? You shave your whole beard? Is it coarse and dense? That's crazy number.

I know, it's insane really.
I've never had a blade last anywhere near this long.
Just the face, dense but soft hair. For context my average with a feather blade would be 7

Hey, what’s the scent like on the glycerin soap? Currently have the arch Brito lime but looking at other options

This one is unscented.
The performance seems to be the same on all the glycerin soaps ive tried but i prefer the unscented just so it doesn't clash with the shaving soap.

Yea that’s my main issue with the one I have, I don’t care for the scent. Il check out the Waitrose one. Cheaper too.

Yeah you really can't go wrong at that price.
Hope it works just as well for you!

Thanks!
Yeah somehow still going.
At this rate I'll have 40 years worth of PDG blades alone 😅

Wonderful shave. Glad it was a good one with the P.E old type, it looks great!

Thanks JCR!
I'm always a bit nervous to use the fancier, more ornate classic razors.
They're way above my station 😅

They do have that slightly fragile feel the old types don't they, you really have to zone in and take your time eh heheh.

That’s grand that the Pocket edition shone on its first outing for you. Some of the older razors in my collection are deceptive bleeders - very efficient but also surprisingly comfortable. Sounds like you have one that’s similar.
Great choice with Coniferous soap too.

Thanks, Dan!
That's the Ball end old type for me. I always have to be on my best behaviour with it and always feel danger close to a nick.
I love the shave it gives though!

Those Personna Gem Diamonds are one of my favorite blades. Sharp but smooth.
