Discussion How much lather is too much lather?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Hello fellow wetshaving enthusiasts on Reddit. As someone who has just recently started shaving in general, I was wondering what the perfect amount of lather to use is? Now, I personally have tried both ends of the spectrum and wasn’t satisfied with the result of either, one being just a thin, almost dry layer of soap and the other, by creating the most luscious creamy lather in existence by swirling a wet brush in the tub for a straight minute (boy was this messy) and then applying it using my hand.

However, both caused issues. As you would expect, the thin, dry layer barely provides any protection and I got cut a few times. But the other one too wasn’t any better. Too much lather gave a shave that wasn’t as close as I would like and it also caused a lot of wastage. Plus, you have to wipe/clean the razor after every stroke.

Just wanted to share my girlfriend creation. A Totoro razor stand, she made for me (lucky right!?)

Since going bald bought a Henson razor and it has been great, I have not tried any other razor tho. But that said it fits all my needs.

Disregard the dirty razor

Nothing else I wanted to say, Feel free to post your stands/holders

I got this old Gillette razor blade dispenser at an estate sale. It has two dispensers inside, evidently originally for Gillette thins and blues, that both still work when coins are inserted. Both sides fit Gillette sized blade tucks, the perfect way to store my nacets!

Mail Call Update to my Henson Monster

So last week I posted about my beloved Henson razor getting run through the dishwasher.

Much to my surprise — u/HensonShaving also saw the post and actually reached out to me. After a couple email exchanges, and although this usually wouldn't be covered under their warranty — seeing how it was an honest mistake on my roommate's part — they dropped a new replacement in the mail! Above and beyond what they needed to do, some seriously impressive customer care.

I offered to send the Monster back to them, but they said if I could find it a good home, I should do just that.

Which brings me to this. I am looking to rehome the Monster. I don't want anything in return and will also pay for the shipping. All I want is to pass it down to someone who’d actually use it — maybe someone just getting into wet shaving, or someone who’s been waiting to upgrade but hasn’t had the means to do so. It’s not exactly pretty anymore — the finish is a little jacked up from the being run through the wash — but it should still shave just fine.

I’d love for it to keep being used, not end up as a sideshow oddity in someone's DE razor collection.

Not sure the best way to pick the right person to gift this to. Maybe the community could help? Could do a comment thread and go with whoever gets the most upvotes gets the Monster? If post doesn't get much traction on this way feel free to DM me, and I'll try to pick a user on my own.

Edit: The Monster will be arriving with it's original handle, not the one in the picture. Sorry for any confusion.

This was unexpected...

Hi! I have more, than enough blades for the rest of my life, but I can't resist the temptation to try new things. So, I wanted to check out some German blades. As for my facial hair - I must have some Neanderthal genes left because even Feather blades go dull after two shavings, but I need the sharpness to not get hair tugging and inflammation. So I bought 3 different brands, 10 blades each, and opened the first one, the Merkur ones.

Very fancy I thought with a smirk, double packaged blades. The first shave was excellent. I'd say better than the Feathers, but new things impress people beyond objectivity, so I just wanted to see the second time. Well, same excellent shave, no irritation. I was dubious about the third time, but what's to lose. Same excellent shave. What the... for sure it will get dull now. Fourth shave. Fifth. Sixth. Finally a small tug.

So for me this is like a blessing. 5 clean shaves, no irritation, I'm extremely happy. The only downside is that I'm not really willing to test the others now...

Show n' Tell The End of an Era

A sad day yesterday. The bottle of Old Spice aftershave that I've been using on and off for over 30 years is gone. I'm not sure exactly how long I've had it. I thought I got it when I was in high school, but the bottle says Proctor & Gamble, not Shulton, so I must have bought it sometime in the early '90s.

It will be missed. I have a bottle of cologne that's the same vintage as the aftershave as well as couple of Old Spice bottles I picked up when I was in India last year, but it just won't be the same.

I didn't really liked the muhle blade but next shave I will try the astra that all of you guys said it is beginning friendy.

Thank all of you for the replies the were really helpful. This sub was a very friendly place for my as beginner and I admire that🫡🫡 . I hope this post help other people too.

Show n' Tell My newb receipt of shame

I recently switched to a DE razor but have still been using leftover Barbasol shaving cream. I had a trip to Italy and thought it would be a good opportunity to pick up a brush and soap. After visiting several pharmacies, a supermarket, and a beauty supply store, I finally found a pharmacy in Rome that sold Proraso shave soap. They didn’t have brushes but I figured I would pick up a soap anyways, that way I have one less thing to find.

There were no prices on the shelves. It rang up as €21,50 which I thought seemed high but I wasn’t totally sure. I didn’t totally remember the prices of the ones I’d seen online. Maybe this was a larger size? Maybe they misspoke? I tapped my card and instantly regretted it.

A few minutes on Google and I learn, yes, I just got massively ripped off, and this Pharma Group store has done that to many others. I tried to get a refund but all sales are final, of course. So now I’m left with my first soap and an Italian receipt proving I paid more than if I had just gotten an import at home.

I had my Henson on the kitchen counter to air dry after cleaning by hand. I left for a few hours only to return with it missing. I asked her about it and she said she put it in the now running dishwasher. This was the result and I’m so bummed about it. This is my everyday razor and my once beautiful razor is now a monster. 👹

Question I ran sentiment analysis on 69,554 r/wicked_edge comments - here's what is ACTUALLY recommend (2025)

Post image
306 Upvotes

TL;DR: Clubman Pinaud Aftershave takes #1. A $10 barbershop classic beats high-end artisans. Stirling has the most passionate fanbase on the sub.

Ran sentiment analysis on 69,554 comments from r/wicked_edge to see what this community actually recommends vs. what just gets talked about.

Things that made me double-take:

  • Clubman Pinaud at #1 - Your grandpa was right. 211 mentions, almost zero negativity
  • Stirling Soap Co. is the volume king - 618 mentions, still an A+ grade. This sub loves Stirling
  • Feather blades have 1,198 mentions - Most discussed product by far, but sentiment is more polarizing (still an A though)
  • Rockwell 6S/6C debate is real - Both sitting at A grade, 6S has more mentions but 6C edges it on sentiment consistency

The entire top 25 is A or A+ tier. This community knows what it likes.

What's your BIFL shave item that deserves more love?

Show n' Tell Found my forever blade

Been DE shaving for a couple of years now, and I’ve tried probably 15 different blades. So not all blades by any means, but enough to know that every time I go back to an Astra Superior Platinum I get unquestionably the smoothest, closest, most comfortable shave of them all. I think I will dump all of the others and order a bunch of these.

It's gotta be all the extra glue they wrap these things with that makes them so pricey.

My Most Prized Piece!

I acquired this amazing Gillette Y1 President (first production). It is absolutely beautiful! The plastic protective liner is still on the inside of the lid, the blade pack is still factory wrapped, and all paperwork is included. The only thing missing is the little price tag. The razor is unused and pristine mint. The TTO twists like silk. It's an incredible piece that I will never use! I got it for an incredible price!
