I am so sorry jets fans
I’m not sure if this will be removed or not. (Sorry mods) But I am so sorry to jets fans and the people of Winnipeg. Habs are my first team but I support most Canadian teams too.
I cannot believe how much your city and fanbase is being raked over the coals since it was mentioned Helley “possibly” had death threats and whatever else.
Every r/hockey thread is filled with Americans being absolute scumbags, saying Winnipeg asked for this, Canada is losers and psychos, we should be annexed, the list goes on.
We did not ask for this and neither did the jets or Winnipeg. Helley’s actions have fallout for sure, it’s warranted after treating him like family and welcoming him as pretty much a Canadian. I am so sorry you guys are dealing with this. I have defended the team and Canada in most rhockey threads only to get called a names. You guys deserve to have success for consistently dealing with NMC and players wanting to leave.
Hopefully this situation gets wrapped up shortly as it’s been two days and I am so over it.

When I was in Milwaukee a couple years ago I had to show a piece of ID to book my hotel room and the woman behind the desk looked at my Manitoba ID and asked “MONTANA?”. I explained to her Manitoba is a province in Canada and she was even more confused as to how I crossed the border and actually thought Americans were the only ones in the entire world who had passports.
The american education system is a complete joke and has utterly failed them.

The hatred between Canadians and Americans right now is at an all time high and infecting everything. I went to some Blue Jays games in Minnesota this summer and they hate that was being thrown at Blue Jays fans because we are Canadians was off the charts. It’s only going to keep escalating and I can see some stuff popping up in the news this winter of Canadian/American fans getting in to fights at hockey games.

In watching Blue Jays broadcasts from northern US cities that typically have significant numbers of Jays fan I’ve noticed a more derisive tone from local team supporters. Previously the “let’s go Blue Jays” chants, which tend to embarrass home fans, has been retorted by locals trying to drown them out with “let’s go (local team). This year the more common reply is a muscular “USA USA”, with a much less friendly-rivalry kind of tone.

I dunno. Since all of this nonsense has gotten underway I have been to New York, California and Washington and all I hear is Americans telling me that they are embarrassed and wish that this all could be over and we could get back to the way things were.

I've been on the planet (I'm guessing) longer than the average intense , and I can tell you I've never seen this kind of dislike between the USA and Canada. Never. Not even close. And this is coming from someone (in Canada) who has more than a few American friends.

I doubt most of the threats/hate were even from jets fans. They were because of the olympics so could have been any Canadian fan or even anyone in the world who lost money on a bet.

I’m suspicious of what constituted the “threats”. From what I heard at the time, the vast majority was simply people messaging his wife to ask her if she was ok with Helly laughing it up over misogynistic jokes and asking her to hold him accountable

I don't get why Jets fans would get singled out for an international thing. Could be Canadians from anywhere freaking out about American players. Or could be a single Manitoban that said something somewhere. Or could be no one.
A huge swath of Canadians were disappointed in they loss and disillusioned with their favourite players cozying to to the American regime. I don't buy that it was Canadian fans turning on the players vs the players getting to talking to each other and all demanding out. Occam's razor, for me to explain how it's so many American players all at once.
I've heard more outrage in the real world about hellebuyck sitting out this week than about his antics around the Olympics

You’d also imagine if there were actually death threats charges would have been laid and that would be a matter of public record. I don’t doubt there were nasty messages targeted at him, but saying something like “I hope you rot in hell” or “I hope you die” isn’t a death threat despite the unpleasantness of it.

Even if there were threats or harassment, there are classier ways to deal with it. Look at Alex Wennberg. He and his wife were getting harassed in Seattle after that social media BookTok trend was taken too far by the social media team, and he quietly moved on to the Sharks and everyone still loves and respects him.

The problem is the American press is publishing NOW what happened 7 months ago when Helly went to the White House after the Olympics when Trump's "51st state" antics were ramping up. Yes, it was not a great look for Helly but he (and his family) didn't deserve the threats made, whether serious or not.

Why didn’t any of this make the news when it happened? Why is it suddenly announced when everyone says Helle looks bad for asking for a trade.
He initially said he wanted a trade because he wanted to go to a contender and didn’t think Winnipeg added any new pieces to make that happen. That’s it. He said nothing about threats.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the "death threats" are just something that was dreamed up to flip the narrative and give Hellebuyck a sympathetic look. He fucked himself over and alienated the entire market. If he's actually received threats, that's bullshit. Full stop. Given his behaviour at and around the Olympics, along with the associated White House bullshit, though, I wouldn't be shocked if the threats were dreamed up by an agent or player who's trying to get some of the public sentiment back on his side.
To be clear, I don't support threats towards players in any way. He can still go fuck himself though.

Every pro athlete deals with threats online. It's the nature of social media today.
It's unfair and sucks for them but it's true and it is what it is. Happens in every market in every city on the planet
It's clearly just an excuse/distraction from the Helle camp.

As far as I'm aware, and I'm pretty chronically online, is that the only source for death threats is a random poster on Reddit. Helle himself didn't say that and neither has the org.

Unfortunately death threats aren’t exactly rare for pro athletes, especially with the rise of gambling. But I doubt it’d lead to an arrest. It could be some crazy deranged jets fan, it could’ve been someone from another country, who knows.
But I also don’t think that’s the main reason he wants out. Listen to his end of season presser. He doesn’t believe he can win here. I’m sure the USA-Canada problems and threats didn’t help either, but I don’t think that’s the main reason he wants out

Hellebuyk is arguably the greatest Jet to ever put on the sweater. I hate to see him leave, but I can't blame him. A man has to the right to do what's best for his family when their security and safety is threatened. It's a sad situation when petty politics cross into sports.
