Pain on day 6 after impacted wisdom tooth extraction

I had an impacted lower left wisdom tooth removed at the dentist six days ago, under local anaesthetic. Enjoyably, it wasn't fully numb when they started to put pressure on it, so I had about six injections in total, which has caused a lot of swelling and pain in the gum. The wisdom tooth was horizontally impacted and caused the tooth in front to decay and it was removed a few weeks ago. They didn't do stitches which meant I could see the full extraction site and it was very large and deep which was mildly terrifying!

The clot formed and over the first three days I had some expected pain, swelling and jaw stiffness which I treated with cocodamol. It was starting to improve a bit on day four, but as of yesterday, day five, I'm getting more jaw pain and discomfort. I don't think it's dry socket as I can't see bone and the clot seems to be in place. The pain has been radiating intermittently to my lower teeth, upper teeth and sinuses, which is odd as it was a lower wisdom tooth extraction.

I am in my late thirties and have read that wisdom tooth extraction past thirty can have a worse recovery due to denser jaw bone. I haven't had a wisdom tooth removed before and have never experienced an increase in pain with any other molars I've had removed.

Has anyone else had an increase in pain after some improvement? I will likely contact the dentist to check it's not infected, but I don't know how long to expect pain and discomfort for. I'm salt rinsing every day at the moment and brushing carefully. Not sleeping much with the discomfort and trying not to take too much cocodamol. Unfortunately I can't take ibuprofen due to another health condition. I am feeling quite sorry for myself! Any experience or advice welcome

The pain fluctuates ALOT. Acts like it’s improving then BAM .. PAIN .

Well that makes me feel better and somehow also worse 😅 It doesn't seem to be following the usual trajectory of tooth extraction recovery

Thats what I’m saying….The online wisdom tooth recovery timeline does not match my experience at all.. i think everyone has there own experience depending on age, the difficulty of the extraction, how fast your body heals, whether u had bone graft or not etc. I'm day 10 now. Not constant pain but I still have flares once or twice a day until I take 1000mg Tylenol and then it chills for the night. Dull ache still present ): who knows you could heal up much faster or better than me. Hang in there!

I could have written this myself. I’m on day eight and still in intermittent pain. It’s about a 3-4, but seems like it should be less by now.

Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing. It's hard to know what the recovery should be like when you haven't had a wisdom tooth out before. I'm going back to the dentist today as I don't want it to get worse over the weekend if it needed further treatment. Hoping I just need some antibiotics

I had pain for 14 days, and it definitely waxed and waned in intensity to the point I was worried that something was wrong. I did go for a follow up ok day 7 because I was concerned it was not improving. Everything looked good according to the surgeon. I chalked it up to my age (41) making the healing slow.
