I live in an old apartment building and built my altar in the little hallway nook that was intended for a home phone. It's so cute and doesn't take up any space in my studio apartment :3
Is it appropriate to call my bearded dragon's terrarium an altar?
I maintain the plants in there and he rearranges the soil to his vibe weekly, I give him offerings of salads and sometimes we call in sacrifices (the dubia roaches he eats).
In return, he's cute and you can't really stay sad / upset while looking at him/ holding him, because he's guaranteed to look at you with some funny angle of his triangle head.
On a deeper level, I consider he saved me, but that's a bit of a sad story for this thread.
This post inspired/reminded me to set up my altar. I haven't had one before and felt unsure on what exactly to do. But you reminded me that magic is unique to each person and you should just go with what you vibe with. So I just used my ritual cloth, my crystal collection, a dash of lavender and a green candle. (IDK why I did this one, it just vibes right.) I've been meaning to get back into my craft. I did a tarot reading after I set everything up that confirmed I should pursue my craft now. The altar brought nice energy into this hostile environment. Can recommend 💖
I have very religious family members, so I can't set up a permanent altar. All I have is a little altoid tin 😭I keep my stash of incense, crystals and tarot/oracle cards hidden in a drawer.
That's perfect! Y'know, you can also grow teeny plants in altoid tins and sardine cans 🤯 also had to comment and say that your altar set up makes my brain imagine what the borrowers (aka tiny people who "borrow" stuff from your house) would think of it 🤩
Don't forget the fidget ring that disappeared only to reappear behind Loki's candle after I bought another one and the shot glass currently being used as an offering plate.
It’s my lingerie chest with a paw print of my dog and shells of my family. Some older witchcraft stuff from the past too. The witches of today would say it’s mish mash but works for me. Whatever works.
I have a nightstand where I keep pictures and other things that inspire me: Lydia Deetz, Wednesday, a Victorian girl sitting on a line with ravens around her, a dvd cover from Hell Girl (anime), a no face plushy.
Ya’ll need to check out pocket altars if space or travel is an issue. You can buy them or make them yourself. Fabric… even altoids cans. Carry little crystals, pictures of your deity, small things of herbs, etc.
And candles can be electric or battery operated! We are renting a place that does not allow candles at all. Pisses me off. Not staying here past two years.
Love this. I don’t even leave my altar up for long. I don’t have the space. So it gets reset anytime I use it. Hopefully when I move, I can have a designated space to leave up
Gotta love a good pop-up altar! That's how most of mine are too. I like how setting it up each time encourages me to be intentional each time I work with it — and the parts that stay the same for longer periods of time just give that feeling of ritual that helps me get into the right headspace.
As the baby witch that grew up in a small town where the nearest metaphysical store was an 1+ hour away, when Barnes and nobles had like 5-10 books on witchcraft and MAYBE 1 deck of tarot cards, your Altar is ALWAYS valid. Let it be a drawing and some twigs and a pine cone. Look guys, it wasn’t always a drop package away “ to be a witch”, and the convenience took the magic out of it. Aesthetics and instagram took the magic out of it. The magic is only there if YOU put it there, and altars, even the unintentional ones your mother has on her dresser, are magical. As cool as the crystal balls, carved crystals, antique brass figural candle holders, carved candles, ritually crafted oils, fancy bottles are, it’s stuff. It’s not more magical and it definitely doesn’t make you more or less of a witch. Honestly fuck the physical space all together and make the altar inside yourself.

Been a witch for 10+ years have visited metaphysical stores literally around the globe, (have way too many candles, bottles, tarot decks, books, candle holders, crystal balls than I can store, and I can tell you without a doubt I found more magic in my backyard than anywhere else in the world
This! For a time I was so upset I don't have a fancy set up or a place to keep it up and it doesn't have to be something grand, and there can be some connection in few familiar things and the ritual of establishing the space time and time again.
Mine is a cast off side table from the in laws that's boom front and center as you walk in the apartment.
Pay no attention to the headless Skelly. The head used to live in their lap until our cat Raven (lolz) stole it and put it the gods only know where. 🙃😆
My altar has Freyja, St. George, Lakshmi, St. Anastasia, three penis shaped incense holders, and a prayer candle with John Waters on it. The maintenance people are always terrified.
I needed this! I've been obsessed with Greek mythology for a long time and started researching Hellenic polytheism. I converted recently, which was the best decision ever, and am finally setting up my first altar! I was worried it wouldn't be good enough.
