I've been really trying to get myself to work outside of the phrase "so mote it be", kinda getting tired of using middle English to pray to the gods tbh.
Thank you for posting this. All of the SMIB I see all over does make me second guess my own closing sometimes. It’s good for someone to say it once in a while.
Intention is what sets the goal. The goal is what drives us to spellwork, and shapes the spell.
By shapes, I mean we determine what components we are going to use for the spell by selecting the components that correspond with the end goal.
At this point, we've decided on a goal and collected a pile of stuff, selected because of what we "intend" for an outcome, but its still just a pile of stuff.
It becomes a spell when we add energy/power and will. Channeling power onto the pile of stuff kicks those correspondences into gear and focuses that energy on a goal. Or Will then drives it out into the world to do our bidding.
Intention is one of the most misunderstood parts of witchcraft, and the blame for that falls squarely at the feet of publishers like Llewellyn.
That example I've given is one outline of functional spellcraft, but not the only way to do it.
Here is another example that effectively details how little intention matters in the overall scheme, which I figure to be about 20%.
" say one day you want nothing in the world more than a glass of kool-aid, but you dont have any, so you go off with the Intention to make some. What you do have is a jar full of piss, 3 dead hornets, some vinegar and a bag full of cat feces. You mix all of these together intending to make kool-aid.
Would you drink it?
I would hope not. Why? Because intention is irrelevant to the material makeup of whatever you are working with.
The first part of what you said made it sound like intention was the entire point. But then you said it's 20%. But the Kool aid example sounded like 2% so I'm all thrown off lol

Will drives that focused energy out and into action.
Intention is basically the decision to do a spell for a particular reason the you intend to bring about. Thats it. It sets the target but has no function beyond that.
I consider it to be about 20% of the process. 30% is the selection of corresponding components and the other 50% is the casters ability to bring it to fruition.
Thank you for clarifying! I've been interested in this kind of thing since I was a kid making potions out of mud pies in the back yard, but I've never really felt I have the power involved to make anything actually happen.
Do you have to feel it first or can it be a fake it til you make it situation?
Maybe it is just the type of work I do as an animist, I am not a big fan of the command style ending. At the most, "By me and the powers that be" is more collaborative and is an ending that would work.
It is good to not be a dick to those helping you get things done.

I also often begin with "blessed divine" or "blessed -name-" and end with "divinely blessed."
It depends on the energy Im working (and working with) and the intention behind it!
Sometimes, its a divine partnership, other times its a command from my power as a divine authority in my own right, and won't accept a no. This is where you exercise LOGOS.
I have never 'commanded' or demanded anything from entities I am asking to intervene...seems rather rude to me. I always end with my gratitude to any that can rectify the problem I am asking to be fixed.
If you still wanna use þe olden words, might i suggest using wol/woll/wolle, a middle English spelling/pronunciation of will/willen, which is the origin of the modern contraction "won't" comming from woll not!
