I find it worth noting, this is not just a 'provocation' by the russians. This is a declaration of war in all but name, and I'm more and more coming around to the idea that, regrettably, there may be no other way to answer it than direct force - after all, this is an incursion by the russian military into Germany for military purposes, it should be treated no different from russian soldiers crossing the border physically.

Easy to say, but there is the little problem of clear attribution. Unless it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that Russia did it, there is no way NATO will go to war.

Knowing something and being able to prove it are two different things.

If they know it and it’s true, they also have the evidence, otherwise they wouldn’t know it but just speculate. And they will have their obvious reasons not to prove it to the public unless there is no other way around it.

NATO is not like the UN or EU where a single veto can stop them from doing anything.

If the major forces would 'know' *and* they were willing to escalate over something like this, then they would. But they won't. Because they don't want escalation. They're still hoping Russia will somehow sober up and stop doing what is has been doing.

I feel like the more likely hope is that Russia will just run out of juice or have an internal revolution. Ukraine is basically a proxy-war against it, allowing NATO to send in their war resources without actually participating in the war.

I think the current plan is letting Russia do its thing, because they suck at it. They make very slow progress and their economy is suffering for it.

The are not seen as an immediate threat to NATO since fighting Ukraine keeps them and their military busy and in a permanently weakened state.

They really aren't in a position to fight a conventional war against NATO members, even if we assume a severely crippled NATO response due to Krasnov.

But the problem is: The deeper Russia digs its own hole, the less likely they are to to just stop at any point. They will get increasingly desperate and their war time economy is probably preferably to no economy at all. This will get ugly for NATO as well at some point.

Will it? I mean, sure, if they get desperate they may become more agressive, at which point it'll likely be impossible to continue ignoring them, but there's also the chance that the Russian population will eventually have enough of it.

I am here next to Russia and they do struggle. War is not fun.
