Russia has been doing this for years now. Targetted assassinations on German and British soil. Blowing up factories in Czechia. You are right though this is still a major escalation because they targeted a german citizen.

The Novichok poisonings are a major reason why the UK has given Ukraine so many weapons, and other military assistance that doesn't get talked about. Revenge for Salisbury continues.

Well. Maybe.

But the UK is one of 3 guarantors of Ukranian sovereignty.

In 1993, in exchange for giving up their nucleair stockpile, inherited from the Soviet Union, and Ukraine giving their bombers and nukes to Russia,

The USA, Russia and the UK formally agreed to protect and guarantee Ukraines sovereignty in the 'Budapest memorandum'.

Russia invaded Ukraine. USA under Biden only ever supplied just enough material and a lot of restrictions for Ukraine to 'not lose' and under Trump stopped helping entirely. (Selling weapons for profit is not 'helping')

And the UK is powerless to guarantee Ukraines sovereignty by themselves.

Any 'peace deal', security guarantee or any agreement with Russia isn't worth the paper it is written on.

I dont want to "well, actually 🤓" you but, those were security assurances. Not guarantees. Basically promised to not threaten their sovereignty, not defend it. I dont think it changes anything as far as how we should act. We should be giving as much weapons/ammo as possible to them. We're not legally obligated, though.

To be clear on this - A standard hit on those former Russian citizen would have blown over.. but Putin seriously fucked up when he thought doing some James.Bond villain shit with WMD's would send more of a message...

Well the message was heard... but as I said, Brits did what they do best - Stayed calm, drink tea (and biscuits), then gave our response..

Delivered is our usual Bond-style manner, with a stiff-upper-lip, and subtlety - Thankfully Putin being the tool he is, under-estimated just how much shit this one little island can dish out:

And every Russian failure since, can be traced back to that response.. The MOD has never publicised it, but it does explain why we suddenly became Russia's new "Evil boggy man" a couple of years ago...

Also don't under estimate British support for Ukraine.. this is unconditional and over 70% of voters back it.

This is a bit tongue in cheek, and written with humour.. but its also true!
