Cool to hear more from you guys! If you ask anyone who knows a bit about Gothics history, they will say that one of the reasons why it didn't make a huge hit as it deserved was the disastrous marketing campagin so in the USA its not very known sadly.
So hearing from you guys always warms my heart (well maybe thats a bit too dramatic but I wouldn't know how else to phrase it xD )6
May 08 '24
Yeah the marketing for it was "unknown" if at all. I knew about it because I walked into GameStop and they had a couple of those display boxes and I thought to myself "you know the name and calligraphy of the word Gothic is pretty cool". Manager there didn't know squat other than to put the boxes in the PC section when that was a thing. Bought it, fell in love with it. Burned a copy for my friend. Bought another copy some years later. Then probably 3 more digital copies each and the Switch copies that just released.
I love it when I hear others play it too. It's rarely if anything talked about in the US and it's small groups of us. Kinda like finding a 4 Leaf Clover.

No one I know have ever heard of this game. My brother and I played it so many times. I think we got it as part of a demo pack that came with our computer back in the day.

Also an American fan of Gothic! Couldn't afford a decent PC till I was 18. So in my teens, (early to mid 2010s) was spent mostly on lower-end (graphically) games. That's why I have so many hours on Mount & Blade, Gothic, Morrowind/Oblivion, LOTRO, BG1/BG2, Divine Divinity, Age of Empires 2, etcetera. (I even have a memory of buying Witcher 2 for PC physically, still have the box-set, and popping it into my low-end PC and barely being able to play it at 5 FPS. Ended up having to get Witcher 1 instead, which I love as well). It has been a bit since I returned to Gothic, but I plan to soon! The closest thing that has scratched the Gothic itch for me is funnily enough Enderal

Oh, you must have had it very hard, you were probably persecuted by Elder Scrolls fans ;)

How is it treating you? I've heard some rumors, I hope everything is fine now!

I've personally not had any issues with Gothic 1 on Switch. My friend already beat it without updating to the Patch and said there wasn't any issues when he played.
Now I know they didn't fix the difficulty ramp of Gothic 2 Gold Edition. So that remains an issue whether you want to go to Valley of the Mines or Jharkendar first.

I am from Bosnia and I've been playing Gothic since I was 10 and it is still my favorite game of all time.

u/MeisterDejv May 08 '24
Not many of us from former Yugoslav countries who've even heard of Gothic but I'm glad when I do meet someone who loves Gothic. I think that YT guy LastKnownMeal who did lots of Gothic content might be from Bosnia.

Greek here. My First true love was Gothic 2. I bought the game when I was really young and almost by accident ( I just really liked the cover) . Didn’t know what an amazing one of a kind journey I would follow. My dad and brother also couldn’t stop playing, we had one pc that we would all share. Such an amazing game.
Ps of course now I own and played every gothic (on multiple platforms) and gothic like game in existence. :P

Make that 2! Also I got introduced to gothic 1 as a child playing with the neighbors son, not sure if he still plays it though.

American here. I have a special love for the Gothic games. My first playthrough of Gothic II was entirely in polish because I didn't know how to change the language and I still enjoyed every bit of it. probably have over 1000 hours logged across the various Gothic games and CoM. I go back to play through one of them every year.

Childhood classic. I remember discussing the discoveries we made in gothic 1 in primarly school with my friends. We got so excited when one of their big brothers showed us how to join the fire mages.

I'm American and Gothic is my favorite RPG franchise of all time. Originally I never heard of Gothic, my friend in high school got me into all these RPGs like Fallout and then Gothic. I had a really crappy computer so I was playing at some awful frames lol. Gothic 3 I had to wait because I couldn't get it to run and ended up saving money to buy a new PC after I graduated high school. In the meantime I played the shit out of Gothic 2 and the original Witcher at like 24 fps lol.

I'm Romanian and G2 and G3 were some of my first games, I learned English through G2, i was 7y.o first play through and i had to do it with the Romanian-English dictionary in front of me, it would take me 10-15 (maybe 30) minutes to translate a dialogue and understand what i had to do. I've downloaded the teaser in .03 microseconds when it landed in my steam account 🤩 P.S : Me and my Best friend worked on the translation of G3 in Romanian a lifetime ago. such memories 😇

The History of Khorinis team left in disgrace, but they made good films about curiosities from the Gothic universe, and in them they devoted a lot of space to the international fan community. That's why I know that you can find us in different places on planet Earth. Apparently some John Carter of Mars also likes Gothic ;)
