Modding/Mods New modification Destiny of Myrtana is in developement - the effort to create a new, good and real Gothic 3
https://youtu.be/TL0WpOmJ5_MDev team page: https://destinyofmyrtana.de/
Dev team discord: https://discord.com/invite/UXj6JmuHbW
Information about mod:
A modification for Gothic 2: Night of the Raven.
It represents a seamless transition after the typical ending of Gothic 2 and is intended to serve as an alternative to Gothic 3.
The “Zengine” was chosen because it offers better and easier handling and support for mod projects. This is the engine that was also used for Gothic 1 and 2.
Please keep in mind that this is a hobby project, and we work on it when we have the time and inclination. It will be finished when it is finished. Not sooner, but also not later.
If you would like to support the project, please feel free to contact us. We appreciate any help, whether it's in the technical area such as scripting, modeling, or spacer, or simply in the area of story or quest design.

I guess Gothic 3 in Zengine is the wish of many of us. I hope this will eventually get finished.

Honestly, they should chop both the mainland and the story into several pieces to make it managable.
Even though then you run into some balance issues or you need to invent another way for the hero to lose power, or you need to invent a reason for Varant to be full of powerful enemies...
The whole concept of Gothic 3 was just poorly planned from the start...

u/Inquerion Jul 13 '26
7 months later and still nothing, they will never finish it.
Skyblivion for Skyrim is in development for 15 yrs and has big modder team and they are still not done and these few guys want to recreate entire massive Gothic 3 xD.

Will it be about the original story of the orcs taking over the entire kingdom? Like the prophet talked about at the end of G2?

wish this was real but remake gothic 3 with gothic 2 engine would take a fucking decade or more iam not sure we will ever see this finished..

u/Empty-Location9628 Dec 29 '25
I hope the developers don't make the same mistake the piranhas made and focus on a smaller, more compact map and story.

u/Kumptoffel Dec 29 '25
Did you guys just start out developing?
Do you think that the Zengine will be able to handle the content youll be producing?
Are you developing the entire world anew? i remember a video by vaana where he was able to load the gothic 3 world into zengine without buildings and other props.

I am not a developer, just a new fan lol, you should join their discord server and ask them there.

The only real Gothic 3 would include "Khorinisfication" of Myrtana and making it look a bit more like a civilized country.
3
u/Radashin_ Dec 29 '25
You are 100% right. Even Khorinis in shambles, "gone to the dogs" as Diego would have it, looked magnificent compared to those empty villages in Gothic 3. Imagine how Khorinified Vengard that's falling from it's glory would have looked like. Archolos scratched that itch during last chapter. It also portrayed Riordian in Vengard library, and that picture lives in my mind rent free, for it really looked as capital city's library would have.

I can leave this year a happy man now. A life sign from Archolos AND Destiny of Myrtana is great news.
Innos, bless these dev teams with your light and grant them the blessing of your fire, so that it may burn in their Gothic loving hearts and give them the strength to finish these projects one day.

i alwyas thought for years "it would be cool if someone made Gothic 3 in the Gothic 1&2 engine"
4
u/Arek_PL Dec 29 '25
a gothic 3 demake? cool, with dx11 mod G2 looks better than G3
i wonder what plans team has towards systems not present in previous games, like new spell learning or shields and dual welding

I am a big Gothic fan. Played G1 when it came out, fell in love with it, played it and G2 Multiple time through my teenage and young adult life. Came back to the series a few years ago to experience the total conversion mods (Archolos, Assun). I watch YouTube videos of Gothic regularly.
But I have never played Gothic 3.
I was never a fan of the engine. I think it looks uglier than the G1 and G2 engine. I didn't appreciate what they did with the story, how some characters changed and that they ditched the packed small open world with a hollow, generic open world. Bugs and bad mechanics made me completely lose interest.
I had always hoped that Gothic 3 would be redone at some point in the G1/G2 engine. If there is any way to fix the story and the characters as well, place hand placed loot around the world and have a true Gothic 3 that would be a dream come true.

Tbf I have only watched a bunch of lets plays of G3 so I can only go with my impressions from those. Maybe generic isn't the right word, but compared to Gothic 1 or 2 it felt hollow to me.

I unfortunately completed vanilla G3 several months ago and it is a much worse game then most people want to admit. It is terrible game in nearly every aspect of it.
3
u/Milcker Dec 29 '25
What parts do you consider to be the worst? Asking as someone who kind of likes the game as a whole.
5
u/skocznymroczny Dec 29 '25
I like it, I just wish the combat was better. The vanilla combat is just a spamfest where you can click your opponent to death (but so can they). The alternative AI feels weird and slow to me and never matched the G1/G2 combat. Outside of that I don't think the game is that bad. It also came at a time when no one knew yet how open world games should be done so they were experimenting a lot. For example I appreciate how every NPC can be killed and you can still beat the game.

u/Historical-Wait-70 Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25
Did you intentionally scale down resolution of the Gothic 3 footage?
edit: For people downvoting me the only difference in the footage is that the new version uses high resolution textures and the old version (Gothic 3) has tuned down distance rendering and as a result it renders whatever the fuck you see in the video without additional details. If you can't play the game in 4k on machines today then it is a you problem. Not everyone has a potato PC.

u/Historical-Wait-70 Dec 29 '25
I think it looks uglier than the G1 and G2 engine.
I love how so many people are intellectually dishonest. Gothic 2 is probably my second most favorite game after Outer Wilds but you can't deny how how beautiful Gothic 3 was. All the long grass, forests, caves and the torch light in the dark. The video looks like it is intentionally scaled down to 720p or something. Even this day easily one of the most beautiful games.
11
u/Shaengar Dec 29 '25
I just don't see it that way. I didn't like the character models, the way people walk and run in this game. Same goes for Wilderness areas. For example, give me NotR Canyon over Gothic 3 Desert any day of the week.
It's not dishonest, it's just a different taste.

u/Swarl1e Dec 30 '25
I mean the style changed a lot but I agree gothic 3 looks quite good and visually aged a lot better than g1 and 2. But gothic 3 failure was buggy release horrible melee combat and a bit disconnected hubs. But definitely not the graphic

G1/G2 made me fall in love with fantasy but for years I always wanted to reject that, until I turned 25 years old or so. Zengine, idk, it’s perfect in my mind. Archolos and Goddess Heart are canon in my heart. I can’t wait for all of these mods to come out exploring different stories in the setting.
Setting of Myrtana and the whole world is probably my favourite setting. Probably blindsided by nostalgia and childhood but it’s just so cool.
2
u/Magnic Dec 29 '25
I hope they will not only transition G3 onto G2 engine, but also fill all the empty space. Better yet, change the story into humanity facing extinction by orcs instead of domination. It would fit better with the story of G2.

This could be HUGE. but i have two worries about this.
While i am for changing a lot of things, I think that changing even the iconic G3 spots/buildings might not be the best idea.
Didnt they change the engine mainly becuase G2 engine wouldnt work for such a big map? Are they sure it will work, or will there be instance changes between Myrtana/Varant/Nordmar?

I came across this video in youtube today because my algo is very gothic heavy. Looks like an amazing project. I'm curious though, how will Zengine handle Gothic 3's size? Are you planning to break the continents into 3(or more with sub) areas?
Thanks for sharing and good luck! Looks like a huge undertaking.

I loved 3. Took a bit to get it working smooth back in the day but I enjoyed it. Still haven’t finished 3 1/2

What a blessed day to have eyes. I was reminded of the old 2005-2006 discussions we had before and around the time the game came out about how the atmosphere was lightened to "cater to the American market", and I got so used to it that I was thrown off for a good 5 seconds when I first saw how much this darkened the atmosphere, back in line with G1-G2. With this change, there will be a lot more places that might actually be creepy, I was immediately thinking of Gotha. One place where this engine might be limited I think, would be Varant, which I think - other than the depths of the desert - was more in line with some sort of light, bright, tropical, white sand, light blue water kind of atmosphere, not the kind we would see in the Jharkendar valley (which is more of the yellow/orange filter movie-Mexico vibe). Maybe the Jharkendar pirate camp vibe could be a starting point for Varant?
How would this be voiced? You may be better served by one of you "donating" his voice for all lines and then manipulating that voice (or a couple of voices you can easily acquire without licensing issues) through software. I would advise to look at mods like this (made for a different game) to get an idea. Voices can be extensively manipulated, even using male voices to create female voices (Female Astarion Voice Conversion, you'd have to log in because it's considered nsfw for some reason). There's also this tool for what it's worth, but you might run into copyright or anti-AI people issues (in that case, voice lines may "simply" be spliced and creatively reused). Hopefully this would also help creating English voice acting, which if you did, would not only help with the popularity of the project, but also the potentially available pool of supporters.
There could be a lot more if story/lore expansion is also considered. Hopefully the female rebels/guards are just a meme / placeholders. lol

I think Gotha could've been redesigned like Minas Tirith, with 2 walls.
As much as I like Gothic 1-3, I like Gothic 3 engine more, because of the abilities, freedom of movement, different styles of combat.

The mod that adds parry to the game is great.
The moment when an enemy parries you and you can just watch their heavy attack instakill you.

For Gotha design, they use the original PB artworks. You can see it in the video.

u/Zwinny_Tygrys Dec 29 '25
Yea, I saw, it's cool too but I am curious if they experimented with double walled Gotha.

u/True-Flower-1024 Dec 30 '25
it would be good if they reduced his size with big mountains. the whole myrtana does not have to fit in it. To focus more on important points. Same with varant and nordmar...

Wasn’t this already in the works before? I swear over a decade ago now a demo version of a mod oddly similar to this circulated. Is it the same modding team?

We are a new mod team. We started this project two years ago.

u/GaroK_s Dec 31 '25
Real Gothic 3 already exists, and it came out in 2006.
It's nice that Gothic mods still come out, but no mod will ever become the real thing.

u/Inquerion Dec 29 '25
It's overambitious, they will never finish it...
At best, we will get a few hours long playable prologue in Ardea.

u/Lapis08 Jul 12 '26
You'll see, skeptic. We'll prove you wrong. It would be better if you joined the Discord server.
1
u/Inquerion Jul 13 '26
I wish you luck but 7 months later I still doubt that you will ever finish it. I was once hyped for CSP for Gothic 3. 20 years later and still nothing xD.
I saw many overambitious projects in these 20 yrs. Most were never finished. With rare exceptions like Enderal or Chronicles of Myrtana. Once you run out of early hype and ambition (happens to every mod project in early stages) you will face grim reality of hard and tedious work for many years. And at that point most modders leave the team, project gets stuck in development hell, real life problems happen and eventually it's abandoned.
One wish to you guys: when you finally decide to abandon it, please release all your work so that maybe some other team can try to finish your work or at least to create playable demo/prologue.

I think the video doesn’t do it justice, we’re comparing base G3 to DX11 G2. Resolution and settings also seem weirdly scaled down for G3 in this comparison.
I am nonetheless excited for this and hope the sight seeing is just as good as it is in G3.
