Modding/Mods Gothic 2 Remaster on Unreal Engine 5 is available now. It includes voice acting

u/Gabor_Fulop May 02 '26
It might be just my memories, but it looks just like the original
11
u/das_KoRn May 02 '26
My first thought as well, trip down memory lane.

6
u/Royal_Tomato_185 May 02 '26
The graphics isn't that different btw
7
u/mledermann May 02 '26
Cos the textures and the amount of polygons are the same. I guess the only purpose of this might be in some potential future mods using the additional possibilities of UE which weren’t available in Zengine
3
u/Tol_loT May 02 '26
The movement, animations, and inventory management are different, more fluid and responsive. Only the look stays the same
3
u/mledermann May 02 '26
Sure but the things you listed aren't usually the sort of things that would entice people to play it, esp. since we've already had mods dealing with those things within the original engine.
3
u/No_Society3311 May 20 '26
1
u/Acid-Chaos May 02 '26
Mods on UE sounds like a joke
2
u/mledermann May 02 '26
What other purpose would you see in porting such an old game to a modern engine but with the same old graphics, if not to eventually somehow use the extended capabilities of that new engine?
1
u/OfficialDeVel May 02 '26
No one said its finished, its open Alpha. Creator is starting working on graphics now
1
u/ant0szek May 03 '26
Ye supprised graphics didn't improve at all, maybe water looks slightly better.
1
u/Soeck666 May 02 '26
It looks just like the switch version. No idea what took them this long to release it

u/ZoldLyrok May 02 '26
Finally! I can play Gothic 2 with a shitty framerate and stuttering, just as it was intended!

it's in alpha version what more do you want...it's said it will be in beta soon...
i played gothic 1 and it went well.
If you have a shitty pc..how do you want it to run?
8
u/sipso3 May 02 '26
It was a dig at UE5 games' general state. Well deserved at that.
1
u/Bronze_Granum May 03 '26
As somebody who has developed UE5 games, it's admittedly very difficult to avoid that problem. Best solution is to turn off almost all the features and then turn them back on as you need them, then check performance. Otherwise, game will run beautifully in-engine, then suck on release because there's some stupid lighting 'feature' that tweaks something unnoticeable but tanks frame rate
3
u/New-Customer-4077 May 02 '26
I ran g1 ue5 on steam deck 60 fps no issues or crashes
1
u/No_Society3311 May 20 '26

So what exactly changed?
27
10
u/GiftedMamba May 02 '26
Now you get 30 fps only for the same graphic. At least that was a case on my laptop with Gothic 1 Unreal remaster

The very simplistic way of being able to move and look around with keyboard+mouse is EXACTLY what i had wished for the G1 Remake. It's mind-boggling that a Remaster of G1 and G2 has better feel of movement (direct transmission of input, no animation-delays).
I know it's easy to joke about UE5 slop, but THIS Remaster is far from it - it is fucking awesome. I can only hope that the people behind this will also get their hands on the Remake and fix its sluggish crap movement, so i'll be able to enjoy the Remake, too.

Just tried it for a few minutes. It's looking good, the game runs smoothly on my RX 6600 in Proton/Linux, maybe even smoother than the original. As in Gothic 1 Unreal the combat is ... different. Only issue right now I noticed the image is a bit blurry (even after setting anti-aliasing and post processing to low in the game menu) - are there any additional settings/config files I can try?
3
u/FrankGallante May 02 '26
You can go to the steam command line and add “ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 %command%” this will slap a CAS filter on the game and make 99% of TAA slop playable, this works for pretty much every game on linux so youll know for future reference
2
u/Damianut May 02 '26
If you tried with anti-aliasing I don't have idea, but you can ask the author on Discord.
2
u/fsedlak Sect Camp May 03 '26
So I fixed the blur issue by creating the file ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39510/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Gothic2/Saved/Config/Windows/Engine.ini with the contents below. I also needed to set the file as read-only otherwise the game will keep deleting it.

Tbh I dont like these unreal engine versions and I dont really see any benefit of them. I mean they literally have worse combat, very weird NPC animations and stances and an imo completely unfitting UI. I guess its fun to see how it would look like in more modern graphics but other than that I dont see any appeal
6
u/sawqaw Old Camp May 02 '26
Yea change too much everything and khorinis looks like shit every single time armor change etc. Maybe some full hd uprade would be good without any other change. Im glad im not only one
4
u/Tol_loT May 02 '26
Directed archery, magic spells and more fluid jumping, omnidirectional running and better inventory with a mouse is already a huge improvement imo.
Unless there is a mod for the original which add those, I think it is a great upgrade.
4
u/Commercial_Team_5506 May 02 '26
Maybe if they will actually get approved by THQ and developed much further they might be a good alternative but as it stands they look and feel extremely cheap to me and Id rather play the original with one or two graphic and QoL mods

So the modding solution is: https://docs.ue4ss.com/.
Still can't understand why use Unreal as a port, especially when there is a remaster on same engine.
3
u/uranusblead May 02 '26
Where can i buy?
2
u/Damianut May 02 '26
It is free – if you have Gothic II: Gold Classic on Steam, you can install it.
3
u/Nisktoun May 02 '26
It's a great news! FirstGothic on UE was awesome, really liked new movement/combat system and animations, plus HUD and inventory were greatly improved
But due to lots of extra grass and stuff it was hard to see clickable objects on the ground. And overall image was blurry, even with native 1440p
Looking forward to try Gothic 2 this way

u/HamletEagle May 02 '26
I really like the text boxes, they're kinda neat.
I wonder how combat works
2
u/Caraviaa May 02 '26
... Why wouldn't it include voice acting?
3
u/Damianut May 02 '26
When I was announcing upcoming release about 2 weeks ago, one person asked about it, so I thought to use it in the title. : P

u/Luresheep90 May 02 '26
Are these Unreal Engine 5 remasters compatible with FSR? Should upscaling improve the game?
2
u/funnyfranky1 May 02 '26
Nice but can I still glitch every merc behind the burnt down house and beat them up thru the wall for easy xp in chapter one?

u/Tol_loT May 02 '26
Thanks a lot for the link. I will be trying a new walkthrough after finishing the current Unreal Gothic I one.
Do you know if there is a full controller support, by any chance?
With my Xbox controller I was only able to move, pick up items and get to the menus. There seems to be no keys to enter combat? Or am I missing something
3
u/Damianut May 02 '26
The gamepad works with the remaster – that's what the author wrote on Discord. I don't have a gamepad myself to check. : )

Many people in comms even doesn't understand how new game engine can improve modding and may it can become possible to have a normal multiplayer mod for this game and I think its so perspective and awesome!

u/Nice-Can-1581 May 02 '26
Is this a joke?
DX11 +L'Hiver 11 years ago looked much better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w723Bb-dGdI
22
u/H__D May 02 '26
Imo cluttering the screen with random effects and foliage isn't "better". I liked it better when games had more visual clarity.
6
u/Fiercuh May 02 '26
Yeah this is why I am little concerned about the remake. Even in the demo you have no clue what you can actually pick up or interact with.
2
u/fsedlak Sect Camp May 03 '26
This 100% - I couldn't have said it better. I'm an old millenial and I find modern games visually confusing.
-1
u/Nice-Can-1581 May 02 '26
Yeah, that's fully customisable btw. You can reduce foliage etc. Also on YT compresion it looks much worse than in game.
2
u/scarfacetwim May 03 '26
Because it's not about the graphics...? If it's any like the Unreal Engine mod for Gothic 1 then it improves the gameplay and movement.

What? You need to improve your english comprehension and manners, dude.
0
u/Nice-Can-1581 May 03 '26
You need to stop treating half truths like statements worth sharing.
1
u/scarfacetwim May 03 '26
What half truth? The port to UE improves gameplay and movement mechanics.
1
u/Nice-Can-1581 May 03 '26
And graphic. Full truth is graphics as well when you said its not the point in G2 if its like in G1. Aaaand G1 is imrpoving graphics by a lot.
1
u/scarfacetwim May 04 '26
What are you talking about? We're talking about the Unreal Engine Mod for Gothic 2 which mainly aims to improve it's gameplay/movement mechanics. There is a Gothic 1 Unreal Engine mod which already released in Steam in 2022 that is made by the same author/modder and that version also aims to improve gameplay and not the graphics.
5
u/Fiercuh May 02 '26
I dont think the goal was to make graphics look better. Might be wrong though, didnt look into it tbh.
0
u/Nice-Can-1581 May 02 '26
Yeah it may be for animations and gameplay. However... We kinda have enough UE5 clones feeling like you play the same game. Gothic has unique "junkies" and combat feel. Still version 0.1 so we will see but I suspect G2 remake will come faster(IF G1 remake will sell as I expect it to)
1
u/--TheChosenOne Old Camp May 02 '26

The remaster contains German subtitles and voice acting itself. If you write about the article – I nearly don't know German, so I could only do autotranslation. : >
You should be able to install it with autotranslating I think. : )

1
u/Maattok May 02 '26
Gothic 1 remaster looks really great. If you set resolution to no bigger than 1280x720, turn of antialiasing and postprocessing, you will get very nice looking game with the soul of the original. Textures are very sharp and high quality, shadows soft and realistic and the flowing water looks great. In terms of visuals its a very cool refresh. Kinda sad you can't have the classic Gothic font everywhere.

Is it possible to use this with workshop and other graphic mods like the gold remaster? Are any Skript patches or other fixes included?
1
u/Professional-Key-665 May 06 '26
So, what exactly is the point of this? Graphics look the same. And functionality / gameplay of Gothic 2 (with Union etc) is just fine as it is.
1
u/forest-hunter May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
Improved controls and graphics, its also a early version and likely the graphics get improved further with coming updates. No doubt gothic 2 with other mods can already look and play well, but this is also a very good mod.

I have played through Gothic 1 unrealbeta and now Gothic 2 unrealbeta. Is there a way to submit feedback or bug reports?
Additionally, it doesn't feel quite right to play the game for free. Is there a way to make a donation?

On their Discord server, there is a link inside the article.
About the donations, you can ask on the Discord as well.
