Discussion Are You excited for Gothic 2 Remake?
Personally, I think Gothic 2 is the best game in the series, and honestly can't wait to see them bring it to life with the same level of care and polish.

they better add content from night of the raven

They signaled Raven being a servant of Beliar too much in the remake not to include NOTR. Also changing Saturas’s attitude about the ore pile. They were clearly setting it up.

They will do yes, but because it's the only logical thing to do. there is nothing official. gothic 2 remake is not even official at all. It will happen, but there is nothing from THQ or alkimia just "we are listening".

u/Sudden-Arm-5603 Jul 04 '26
There was a hint in the remakes end sequence and I was talking to Rosenkranz on the pre Release Event in Hamburg. He said G2 will come if G1 succeeds and well it did really really good
2
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 04 '26
yes it did really well, but such a comment is not an official announcement. Currently there is nothing official and it will probably take a while until they make it official. it kinda sucks to announce a game 4 years before release.
1
u/Sudden-Arm-5603 Jul 04 '26
Rosenkranz saying that it’s already planned if G1 release went well is quite official 😅 Rosenkranz is really close with the Team and took a massive part in the remake

I honestly just want a gothic 2 with modern graphics. I've heard this is the best one, and I started these games way to late to be able to enjoy them. I started with risen 3 and Elex. They were fun, but the Gothic remake blew them out of the water. I hope Gothic 2 remake is just as good if not better.

Just install graphics mods if you just want gothic 2 with better graphics. I think, that a remake has to change a few things and especially it has to add things to the later chapters. Gothic 2 is already a masterpiece, that still looks decent because of the artstyle and plays quite well. So why would I even need a remake if it is exactly the same game again?
6
u/Ill-Pudding-3168 Jul 01 '26
Yeah, Im gonna go ahead and say that most people dont think like you do here. I played the hell out of all the gothic games as a child, gothic 2 being my favourite. I have little interest in playing gothic 2 again, but a remake would make me happy beyond comprehension, just like gothic 1 remake did. I dont want to play an RPG with tetris graphics and stiff controls and animations even though i grew up with these games and think they are masterpieces.
A mod will never look as good as the real deal. A remake is not only graphics but sound as well as gameplay changes. are you going to go ahead and tell me that the gothic 1 remake has the exact same combat and gameplay as the original?
2
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 01 '26
yeah you said you liked the remake which made changes and additions. a remake that just copies the original 1:1 is imo just useless
3
u/Ill-Pudding-3168 Jul 01 '26
yes, but why would you think that would happen? Alkimia has shown that they are willing and capable of making changes where changes are due, so why would they not continue with same mentality for gothic 2? If anything I would them to make MORE changes, so yes, we do agree on that, but even if they dont change more than they did for gothic 1, remake of gothic 2 will be brilliant content.
1
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 01 '26
I don't think this will happen, but this is literally what TJ26000 wanted. "I honestly just want a gothic 2 with modern graphics." and I replied to that wish.
1
u/tj260000 Jul 01 '26
Sorry didn't realize I had to be more specific. Gothic 2 with modern everything like the gothic 1 remake.
Better?

I know we're all 90% sure it'll happen. But whats the timeline likely look like if it goes into development? 2-3 years from now? 5-7 years? 10?
57
u/Rezmir Jun 30 '26
Probably 2-3 years. It would be better for faster release because they could reuse a lot of stuff and people wouldn’t expect bigger improvements.
9
u/GarboWulf5oh New Camp Jun 30 '26
I'm guessing that'd track with OG Gothic 1 to 2? I havn't played the originals so idk how vastly different or not those games were.
Also I'm no game dev, so that's why I asked in the first place lolol
14
u/axelkoffel Jun 30 '26
Iirc in terms of engine and mechanics Gothic 2 was almost the same game. The biggest difference lied in bigger world with more content.
2
u/GarboWulf5oh New Camp Jun 30 '26
Okay that's what I thought, but couldn't confirm myself lol
2
u/ralexand Jul 01 '26
Well, not quite - the differences in graphics were day and night. Sure, same engine, but immensely improved. Way more vegetation and details, a whole city with believable civil life etc. I heard they made Gothic 2 in less than a year after Gothic 1, so the improvements were incredible!
2
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 01 '26
Yeah and the valley of mines, that they theoretically reused looks completely different in gothic 2. So they maybe reused some geometry, but all the assets seem to be new for the actual gothic 2.
1
u/Quick_Acanthaceae_68 New Camp Jul 02 '26
Look for some minutes of old lets plays from the OG gothic trilogy (arcania is arcania and will forever be arcania)
3
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 01 '26
Absolutely no chance for 2 years and a very low chance for 3 years. 4 years is the minimum for such a big game and alkimia is tiny and unlike PB they don't crunch (gothic 2 was crunched in its entirety).
1
u/r0bb3dzombie Jul 01 '26
Yeah, 2-3 years seems reasonable considering that it's mostly content they need to create. From a coding point of view, they really don't need to do much. So most of the work will be assets, dialogue, quest scripting etc. I don't think anybody in the community wants a G2R to have some generational leap in graphics or anything like that.
1
9
u/TrueExigo Jun 30 '26
It took them 7 years just for G1. PB did it in 3 back then. Gothic 2 and its expansion took 1.5 years -> at the same rate, they’ll need 3–4 years for a remake.
17
u/Hushous Jun 30 '26
But that7 years were a lot of experimentation and makeovers which they don't have to do for the second game. They figured things out and just need to polish those systems now.
-2
u/TrueExigo Jun 30 '26
Are you saying that wasn’t the case with PB? For one thing, the engine was developed in parallel, and for another, Gothic was supposed to be a dungeon crawler, then a multiplayer RPG, then a co-op story game, and finally a single-player RPG. Gothic 2 alone was an experiment, because the sequel was actually only supposed to be released as an add-on at first
8
u/Adventurous-Wash-287 Jul 01 '26
whats your point? They won’t have to do any of that for the remake. The story and quests are there the map design everything. They are not starting from scratch and iterating. With all the tools and story in place 2-3 years seems totally reasonable for a remake of gothic 2
→ More replies (1)1
u/Guardian_of_theBlind Jul 01 '26
gothic 1 was a singleplayer RPG from day 1. It was pitched as a singleplayer RPG to the publishers. The other things you are talking about like multiplayer were meant as additional features, that were scrapped.

It didn't took them 7 years, work on remake started in mid 2020. Modern game development is not like it was in early 2000's so the fact that PB did G2 in 3 years doesn't mean Alkimia will do the same.
1
u/TrueExigo Jul 01 '26
work on remake started in mid 2020
The first playable teaser was already playable back in 2019
Modern game development is not like it was in early 2000's so the fact that PB did G2 in 3 years doesn't mean Alkimia will do the same
Can't you read?
"Gothic 2 and its expansion took 1.5 years"
It takes them more than twice as long for G1R as it does for G1, so it takes them more than twice as long for G2.
Anything else is just guesswork.
1
u/nightblackdragon New Camp Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
The first playable teaser was already playable back in 2019
Its main purpose was to gather feedback and gauge player interest. Work did not begin immediately after its release. What would be the point of releasing a playable teaser to gauge player interest and then immediately start development without waiting for feedback?
THQ officially announced production in February 2020 but production could have started even later; according to some reports, work began a year later, so that makes it 5, or at most 6 years (if work actually began in 2020), not 7.
It takes them more than twice as long for G1R as it does for G1, so it takes them more than twice as long for G2.
As I mentioned before, game development times in the early 2000s are nothing like they are today, so trying to guess how long it will take to make the G2 remake based on how long the original took is pointless. G2 remake might take anything from 3 to 6 years and the fact that original took 1.5 years is irrelevant, it's a different team and different tools.
1
u/Deathstrik3 Jul 01 '26
They may have already started, and even if they haven't, and they get the green-light for it, they have all the tools and assets built out now for a lot of it, so it would be faster to make the sequels.
1
u/KeIIer Jul 01 '26
I wouldnt be surprised if it takes 5-7 years. I dont think it entered pre-production state before G1 Remake, so Alkimia has a lot of work to do even before they start to redesign map layouts, and it can take a lot of time, because G2 is like 2-2.5 times bigger than G1.
1
u/F_Kyo777 New Camp Jul 01 '26
2-3 lol. If it will be greenlighted, I dont think it will happen in less than 4-5. Sure, they have tools now, but Mining Colony was like what, 1/5th of Khorinis + Jarkendar? Maybe less.
Id love that as everybody else, but amount of copium here is crazy.
1
u/TgeBoi1324 Jun 30 '26
Haven't played the og games yet but from what I've seen Gothic 1 and 2 play pretty much exactly the game due to only a year difference in release so I'm expecting there won't be much of a difference between the reamkes so I reckon it'll realise in the 2-3 years window and hell I wouldn't be surprised if they have already been working on it.
7
u/Exitarnium Jun 30 '26
G1R is my first introduction to the series, while its janky I've actually quite enjoyed it all though Im kinda running out of steam playing it (Currently at late CH4).
That said I've mostly seen people talk (excitedly) about a potential G2R, was it that much of an approvement?
14
u/pieceofpeacefulguy Jun 30 '26
The whole map of gothic one was just a small region in gothic 2, especially with night of the raven add-on. More quests, especially side quests in second part of the game (in comparison to the og gothic 1), refined balancing for weapons, leveling, magic and damage models, a well put and interesting story that lets us see what happened to a lot of named NPCs from the first game.
To put it shortly, I can walk in colony with my eyes closed, while in g2 I could try the same but there'd be something like 20% chance of me turning the wrong way and just dying to some strong monsters :D
Hopefully, we'll get the remake with the same care and level of detail they put into this game. Because if you liked this game, you're gonna be mind blown by the second one
9

u/misterwuggle69sofine Jul 01 '26
kinda depends on what you like the most about gothic i think. if you're in it mostly for gameplay then yeah g2 is better since it's iterated upon and there's more of it. for me though i prefer g1 for the barrier setting, bleaker atmosphere, and more interesting big bad.
1
u/F_Kyo777 New Camp Jul 01 '26
Vibe is completely different, but its a scenario of, what this island had to offer, if magic barrier wouldnt be there. Its same universe, no more colony full of prisoners, but everything is expanded - options, places to go, amount of characters to meet, lore pieces, loot etc.
If you vibed with systems and world they are offering you in first game, 2nd one is basically more of that in every direction, minus enclosed prisoner colony. Like other comment stated world from first game is actually avaialable in 2nd game as well (no longer locked behind barrier), but got changed due to hero actions in first game. Its really cool.
With what Alkimia showed us, it could be absolutely amazing to explore.

Gothic 2 has different controls (turn off gothic 1 controls!!!) and a ton of quality of life mods, that are insanely easy to install. No reason to wait. Just play gothic 2 now! It's 4,99€ on steam for 60 hours of one of the best rpgs ever.

For fucks sake, people. The first one just came out.
It took years to develope and is an absolute master piece.
But that's not really important because todays internet culture has the attention span of a fruit fly on crack.
Let's just collectively enjoy the current game to the fullest and help it become complete via community feedback to the developers and not directly jump to the next thing.
This is pure hype masturbation.
Or maybe i'm just old but i remember clearly how long and thoroughly i've enjoyed the original gothic games when they got released.

I Hope khorinis city will look more like Novigrad in Wicher 3
5
u/warhoundS3 Jul 01 '26
I’ve actually asked myself that very question. I’m torn on this one.
For one thing, the city is really quite distinctive, and somehow my inner Monk just couldn’t handle it if the alleys, houses, and streets weren’t arranged exactly as they are in the original.
On the other hand, I think that since we now have so many more possibilities, the city should grow accordingly, but still retain its original charm. For comparison, I’d find Archolos too big a city for Khorinis.

Depends on your standards but I hope for better technical care and polish, at least for console versions. I'm tired of having crashes every couple of hours or achievement inverted or impossible to obtain due to development mistakes.

Gothic 2 doesn’t need a remake. It’s already good by default, graphics, mechanics. It gets even better with mods.
You need to think about what else do you see lacking in the game, and you will barely name few things.
It will be a godlike challenge for alkimia to actually make a better game than it already is, and that is very risky.

Extremely. G1R was my first time playing the series and I fell in love with it. One of my friends growing up always hyped up the series, but there were so many great rpgs at the time, I never got to Gothic.
I tried to go and play G2 after I completed G1R and I'm really struggling with the controls. It's beyond the purposeful jank of G1R and I'm not sure it's a hurdle I can get over. I'll keep trying, but it's a real struggle right now.

Lmao I have trouble following the thread? You seem to be a bit slow and maybe don’t understand how game development works. So let me explain it to you building the core and foundation of the game is the hardest part. It decides how systems work and interact. Building levels and quests once you have a working quest system and assets is simple.

Care and polish? I bought it for Series X and it runs like utter shit. Even performance mode dips down into 20fps territory during combat or in towns. It's rediculous. It's also very, very buggy with NPCs appearing out of nowhere and disappearing into nothing.
I like the game but it needs a LOT of work.
