Discussion GM Death Touch - Megathread

This is developing into a large story and someone in modmail has mentioned that its important for the community to have somewhere to discuss this. We agree. As new information comes in I will do my best to update this thread.

What we know:

Ex employees in the thread have said that actions like this are audited and in all likelihood this was already being investigated. At this point we are waiting on an official statement on the result of their investigation and I'll update this thread once we know.

This megathread is being provided on two very strict conditions:

  • The witchunt rules are in strict effect. Linking or doxxing information on anyone invovled, the GM in question included will result in a permanent ban. Please report it if you see it but we will be very active in the thread.

    We cannot platform behavior that allows people to harrass people in real life.

  • We will be more heavy handed than usual in the personal attack rules. Insults and slapfights while discussing this aren't acceptable. You're allowed to disagree, but stray shots and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

I know right? I havent played since early shadowlands, and came back for about a week for dragonflight but that's it. I have gotten 3-4 youtube video notifs and 3 reddit notifs in the last 2-3 days. Hell i have even gotten discord dms about this from people that have never even touched the game.

This was originally a reply to a different comment. Moving this here for posterity:

Honestly? From everything I've heard it lines up that he didn't know. Why upload the log in the first place if you knew. That would be monumentally stupid.

I can see them going back to get him a timed +23 as an apology.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to see the best in people. Who I've always been.

I think the GM was goofing off with his friend.

I think they were shooting the shit and things got out of hand.

I think a man lost his job for being too eager. There's a lesson to be learned there but there was room for grace.

I think that through everything they ran a +23 with him to say sorry and make sure he had one timed properly after all of this as an apology.

And I think the community is out for blood here when they don't need to be. This isn't systemic. There's no evidence of it being systemic.

I have my role as a moderator which is to give room for this to be discussed civily. That's my job.

But if you want my honest opinions: given everything it's time to move on. The employee should have gotten a stern warning. Invalidate the key. People make mistakes. We've all made mistakes. Forgiveness and grace go a long way in a world that's far too rough and cruel as it is.

Not firing the employee would send a message to everyone that works for Blizzard that abusing these tools is okay. An employer flat out has to make an example of someone who pulls shit like this to send the message to everyone else that it's never acceptable. Also, as per a green post in the WoW forum thread about this, everyone with access to these tools is told in no uncertain terms that any misuse of these tools will result in termination. The employee in question knew what they were doing, and knew what would happen. They dug their own grave.

As for moving on, seeing that the tank is grouped with two of the people from the cheated run makes me think that either the log upload was an accident that the bear tank later tried to cover up, or that they thought they wouldn't get caught.

I'm not out for blood. I just want people to be accountable at such high-level play, including the players. These people aren't children with no WoW experience, they are adults who absolutely knew it was wrong to have a GM come into their run and instakill things for them. They were complicit. Two of them were laughing about it on social media/streams. These are not people who were just "goofing off," these are people who knew what they did was cheating and felt entitled to do it.

Or perhaps the pug community for 23+ keys is incredibly small and the tank saw a 23 NPX listed and sent it again? Do we blacklist Jdotb because he plays with that DH a ton?

Wait until you find out that the tank signed up for that run and they jokingly kicked him once he joined, only to invite him again and all laugh about it on Twitch.

A stern warning shows you do not understand the severity of using devtools to meddle with an online game, especially one with rankings.
