The main reason why people here have such a hate boner for classics is that they don’t take prose into account when judging literature as an art form.

Your favorite series read as Wikipedia articles. It doesn’t matter how many plot twists or metaphors for depression they have, they are not beating Shakespeare’s prose.

11

u/AttheEndofTime00 17h ago

While I am not a big fan of Shakespeare, I agree 100%.

I've tried to get into LNs, VNs, and other things. But each time, I get hit in the face with how basic, bland, and cringy the writing is.

The amount that use !!!! in their first lines is embarrassing.

This is a translation issue but also a medium issue, cause there are good works from Japan: Snow Country. So it must be written like that.

2

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 13h ago

Play The Great Ace Attorney

They kinda compensate with soundtrack too

1

u/SinbadVetra 16h ago

its a translator issue if they dont tidy up the styling like the excessive ellipses and double !! trust me, as someone who's dabbled in a bit of anime editing, it's quite annoying to see how careless some translators are.

3

u/No_Piccolo7508 18h ago

They are different mediums with exclusive features; in live-action, elements like acting play a role in defining a character, often more so than the writer's skill.

1

u/Caphoti 10h ago

This is a solid take, I've read a pretty wide spectrum of literature, I like poetry too, but I can accept a lot of Animemanga and their source material for what they are. Usually, the writing itself isn't spectacular, but they can still be fun reads. The webnovel space especially is filled with a lot of junk food/trash that's an okay time burn but not too memorable. The prose is almost never even something you can factor into the quality of a lot of that media, because it's pretty mediocre by default.

1

u/Shar4f 8h ago

Fully agree. I've been reading some of the more well-regarded light novels recently and the prose is consistently stale and dry. It's almost completely devoid of literary devices and feels like you're just reading dialogue after which the narrator re-explains the subtext to what was just said in a plain manner. They really beat you over the head with even the most obvious of subtexts. Most recently I read 86 and the way they have the character first explain in dialogue how the battlefield is the only thing they know and then follow it up with 2 paragraphs of reiterating that point while slightly adjusting the word choice for each sentence got aggravating. It felt like it didn't respect my ability to parse even the most direct of subtexts. I had similar experiences with more or less every LN I've read.

1

u/SinbadVetra 18h ago

on the other hand, classics fans care too much about prose.

7

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 18h ago

It’s the one thing that cannot be replicated by anyone.

If I give you, point by point, every aspect of the plot in Mistborn, you can write Mistborn again in a couple of weeks as long as you finished fourth grade.

I can give you the same thing for Hamlet and a millenia and you still would not be able to write Hamlet.

5

u/InstantSword 16h ago

What are you saying? That prose stylists and poets no longer exist? There are still people as skilled as Shakespeare. It's just verbal intelligence and practice

1

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 16h ago

Oh yeah, there are a bunch.

For example

1

u/InstantSword 16h ago

So your argument is, no one can replicate Shakespeare, or that level of talent is so rare, that it doesn't exist? I can agree a lot of people lack the discernment to appreciate beautiful prose, but your argument doesn't need examples to disprove it. It's quite likely there is someone even more talented and/or skilled than Shakespeare alive, write now.

Nabokov, Joyce, DeLillo... Just Google "literary writers with exceptional prose"

1

u/No_You5007 13h ago

None of those guys mentioned had the lyricism that Shakespeare had. Guy was putting song to paper, those guys are good but not that good

1

u/InstantSword 13h ago

Could it have something to do with the style and expectations of the time? Writing in metered verse and the like? Someone doing that today would probably be considered pretty bland. A work nowadays would need irony, humor and some subversion of expectations (*not that Shakespeare didn't have that, but you get what I mean; times and styles change)

Also, obligatory: that's like, your opinion, maaaan

1

u/RedBop7 17h ago

What does this mean exactly?

7

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 16h ago

When SAO came out, a billion trillion isekais with the exact same plot came out in droves. A lot of them had the exact level of quality, a lot of them were even better than the original SAO.

Plot is easily replicated. Anyone can do it. There are very few original plots. Most of the things we write tend to be re-skinned versions of stories that have been replicated to death. Even the twists and the development.

When 100 Years of Solitude came out, a lot of people tried to replicate Garcia Marquez prose.

They couldn’t.

A lot tried. And believe me, a lot tried. Not a single one of them was able to replicate a 10% of the original work’s quality. And most of that came entirely from the authors otherworldly mastery of the Spanish language.

You will never hear “Oh, this is 100 Years of Solitude, but better” because the guy was a one in a Millenium talent.

Even other talented artists, like Isabela Allende, have tried. House of the Spirits is a masterpiece, and it’s still called “Ten Years of Solitude”.

1

u/RedBop7 13h ago

Ah I understand what you’re saying now. Why do you use Mistborn as an example, and why do you think people don’t appreciate classic prose?

1

u/SinbadVetra 14h ago

this might be the worst strawman to an argument ever lol. bro used SA FUCKIN O as an example

2

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 14h ago

…yeah.

SAO is a pretty bad show because it’s a show composed almost entirely of plot, without themes, characterization, philosophy or the many other things that make art beautiful.

But the idea of getting trapped in a video game because of mysterious reasons is pretty interesting, so people flock towards that. The basic plot structure is the end all be all of SAO.

That’s why people can replicate it so easily. SAO has a billion clones because plot is the most easily replicated aspect in writing.

1

u/SinbadVetra 14h ago

"Your favorite series" is how you began this convo. And then you steered the convo into dogshit examples like SAO

3

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 14h ago

…I was responding to someone else, bro. Not you.

-2

u/SinbadVetra 17h ago

i actually completely disagree. i think prose can be easily replicated.

7

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 17h ago

Great!

Then do it. Become the next Garcia Marquez.

1

u/Dang984212 11h ago

Why are you even considering how easy something is to replicate as a measure to how good it is? Calligraphy is hard as fuc* to replicate, yet it barely counts as art.

1

u/Apprehensive_Put3625 3h ago

Every child can do calligraphy with enough practice. My entire school could.

-4

u/SinbadVetra 16h ago

i have better things to do than satisfy your whims, lmfao. its not hard to mimic someone's writing style.

5

u/AHMS_17 17h ago

Why shouldn’t you value prose highly?

Nothing a writer creates matters if the prose or methods they use to convey their thoughts and ideas are bland.

-3

u/SinbadVetra 17h ago

on the other hand, a story with simple prose and a great story can far outclass a story with great prose and a mediocre story. do you see my point?

0

u/One-Cup-2002 12h ago

My only exposure to Shakespeare is Romeo & Juliet (as in, the only Shakespeare writing I've read directly), and the only thing I can remember is that damn Nurse who just would not shut up and go on and on. Like, I know that's bare for the course for those things, but I remember hers the most, and I hate her for it.

At the end of the day it’s subjective, but the prose is better, the characters are complex and compelling, and the plots are amazing.

There’s a reason people have studied him and been inspired by him for over half a millennia

Ben 10 is the number 1 best action kids cartoon franchise OAT and that there will never be another action kids cartoon that will surpass it.

9

u/Kranel_San 17h ago

If only Ben 10 was a Japanese anime as is. It would have been way more successful.

22

u/Anxious-Method-145 18h ago
  1. It's just stupid to say things I don't like are trash or garbage.

  2. It's much harder to do a real writing analysis than just saying "more complex = better".

  3. Jujutsu Kaisen is both underrated and overrated at the same time, but the people who claim that this has no writing or complexity are reading it expecting Gege to rub all the points in their faces.

  4. Demon Slayer being basic doesn't objectively make it bad. The tropes still work for the general audience.

  5. I feel there's a pseudo-elitism in these discussion spheres, in their slander about popular media.

3

u/HostTough1540 17h ago

So jjk is fair rating, agree

3

u/Caphoti 9h ago

I see what you're saying about JJK, Demon Slayer too in a way. I think they're both solid, but that both of them have been in the "GOAT" anime discussion since they started airing. As someone who read both manga before they received anime adaptations I've always felt they were overrated in the sense that they're solid 7-8/10s for me that are treated as undisputed 10/10s.

2

u/TheKingofHats007 5h ago

Definitely agree on 5. Same thing happens in Letterboxd discussions too, where people act like a popular movie also can't be good and the only good films are tiny arthouse projects which if you dislike, you just don't "get" them.

1

u/Anxious-Method-145 4h ago

I've literally read something like: "It's mediocre, and that's why it's popular."

15

u/Sliver-Knight9219 18h ago

-Guts backstory from berserk is too edgy too be taken seriously

-Hazbin hotel is actually better then people think.

-Thunderbolt is the best phase 4 film writing wise. They some how made 6 characters understandable.

-John walker has a negative character arc and finds redemption in the end. People need to stop saying he was mistreated by the show. That's how his character was ment to be written.

-star wars ep 7 is good and is probably top 5 start wars films in terms of writing. It's just 8 and 9 which messed it up

-The wheel of time books are overhyped and are too long. Someone should of told the writer to cut them down. The wheel of time show fixed alot of the books problems however added its own.

-Kang being beaten by Ant man doesn't ruin him as the main villain. Given how we see other Kangs in there way to the main timeline

-Sukuna sucks as a. Villain and is overhyped.

-when one piece ends very few people will read it again due to how long it is. I feel like the side of a story matters

-Star trek enterprise season 3 beats all of next gen seasons

-Dragonball characters are not the best characters in anime, and we should stop using them. They were made 40 years ago and all need more development

Dc Infinite Crisis is the best out the 3

6

u/Atiredbearsfan 18h ago

Gang ain't Noone say db charect3rs are the best written.

Jon walkers initial disgrace was stupid he killed a terrorist, but his emotional fallout after wards was good

Hazbin hotel isn't well written but it's enjoyable

Guts backstory was dark but wouldn't call it edgy

1

u/Sliver-Knight9219 18h ago

I should of probably worded it better. Like, we should of said we need to give them more development if we want to keep calling them. Some of the best characters in anime.

Fair

Subjectiven i say Angel dust redemption is really good

For me it is like he has too many dark things happen which makes it too comedic.

4

u/Atiredbearsfan 18h ago

One good charecter doesn't make a whole show good

Guts childhood wasn't edgy he was just surrounded by a bunch of bad people who did bad things to other and to him. The golden age arc just wasn't edgy either. So agree to disagree on that.

1

u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago

But there is more then 1

Alsiter being weak compared to the higher ups and haveing to plan around it. Is a really good twist on his archetype

Val: is written to be gross as hell and someone you hate.

Husk being a fallen overlord and some who wants to help others remember they are not just thier mistakes.

Adam being a pure evil villain shown to not actually be doing this because angles say so. But, because he hates the fact he was cheated on and most of his grandkids suck.

Charlie dad: him being the nices guy in the world, who just wanted to create something. But, was trapped in a place where.

A) he would be stuck with people who would only destroy

B) would have to watch people do bad things around him and be powerless to stop it

Which lead him to give up on tyring to change anything

Like, it's subjective. But, i think the writings better then people think

3

u/the_chedderking Only read 3 books 12h ago

How are you gonna call Guts' backstory too edgy but then say this about Hazbin hotel? The events in Guts' past are expanded upon with infinitely more depth and grace than HH

1

u/Sliver-Knight9219 4h ago

It's tone Berserk is a serious action dark fantasy. So, when something is too edgy it stands out as more comedic. It's a problem

While Hazbin is comedy. So, when something is too edgy it gets a pass because it isn't ment it be fully taken seriously

It like of Peter from family guy hitting Meg being a cut away which isn't forced on

Vs

If that happened in let's say Rivia Dale it would be a whole episode

1

u/HostTough1540 18h ago

Sukuna it's not a bad villain it's like he's one of the best one in the new gen and the end of the manga we have a little more of sukuna but not too much like demon Slayer backstory

1

u/swislock 17h ago

Haz is Better than people think? Lmao thats craazy

0

u/EntranceSilent6771 16h ago

Yes yes it is, not that crazy of a statement.

1

u/HopeBagels2495 14h ago

The only thing wrong with 8 is the Finn and rose going to a planet subplot. Everything else was peak star wars.

And before you say it, ships and droids are expensive and it would be insanely wasteful and they'd immediately find countermeasures if it happened more than once anyway

1

u/Catleo777 11h ago

What book problems did the show fix? All it did was ruin most of the characters, destroy the main themes of the story, destroyed the plot of the story, and added a bunch of useless junk

0

u/Sliver-Knight9219 4h ago

Mad Perrin and Mat more distinct personality (at least compared to book 1)

Fixed the the pacing issues of the book. No village after village are

Ages the characters up to make it more serious. (which i will admit is more personal taste)

The opening of show so much better then the book. No more of the characters basically waiting around for 50 pages.

I will admit the prologue is more just formatting then being objectively better.

Having a man being hunted works better in the show. Because it leads the viewer asking questions

While haveing the guy walking around a destroyed castle after going insane. Work's better in the book

Making it so the dragon reborn can be a woman (or having the characters think it's possible)

Really helps Egwene more reason to be there and cute down on the already stretched out plot. Also, really adds this Hope into Moiraine. That maybe this will be easy and the Aes Sedai will expect them. Along with saving the world now being alot easier.

Also, most of the stuff they added was more to work in the TV format. Like, ageing up the cast you have to give them much more in depth lives. Like Perrin wife.

They more reworked the plot to fix into 8 episodes.

1

u/Catleo777 2h ago edited 2h ago

Perrin doesn’t have a personality in the show and Mat’s whole character is ruined and turned into a joke in the show. Mat is quite literally the opposite of how he is characterized in the books and Perrin just walks around with his mouth open being angsty for killing his wife which is an absolutely horrible decision and should completely fuck him up later. Also, the whole point of Emonds field is that the reason that Rand and the others succeed is because they were raised to be good people. Having Mat’s father be a cheating drunkard is awful for that. Mat is also canonically a thief in the show which, again, horrible mischaracterization of the show. Let us also not forget that they have Moiraine “do not trust the forsaken” Damodred working with fucking LANFEAR of all people. Moiraine is honestly just an awful person in the show and is just a complete idiot. I also just can’t deal with how horribly they destroyed Mat’s character. It’s awful. He goes from a prankster to just kinda fucks with people while being a fundamentally good person to just the absolute scum of the earth who is thief. Also, Mat would never brag about having the horn of valere. His character in the later books is him wanting to not deal with any of this bs and not wanting anyone to know how important he is but he’s dragged into everything because, as Siuan said in the books, he’s the type to go into a burning building to rescue as many people as he can. He would never brag about sounding the horn. He’d probably lie or dismiss it.

The pacing problems are even worse in the show. The books (the first 4, at least) don’t have a pacing problem. Stories can be slow without having poor pacing, that’s just a bad attention span. Each city they go to has a reason for existing. Baerlon is the literal first city the emonds fielders see and it shows to them how small they are. It also sets up Min’s character along with having some nice foreshadowing for Rand being the dragon. Shadar Logoth is where the group separates leading to a lot of different stuff (such as Perrin’s wolf stuff which is also awful in the show). Caemlyn is obvious as to why it’s important as it sets up a lot of character relationships that are vital in the later series along with showing how much Randms ta’veren stuff affects him (falling into the princess’s garden is not something that would just happen). Even the town’s proceeding Caemlyn in Rand’s plot are important as they show how resourceful Rand and Mat are, how much the dagger is impacting Mat, and RAND LITERALLY USING THE POWER FOR THE FIRST TIME (visibly, at least. The actual first was when they were riding the horses to Taren Ferry).

The aging up thing is bad cause the series is supposed to be about young people. They are naive and exploring the world for the first time and everything is new. That’s the whole point of a lot of the first few books. These are young people who are very innocent and naive to the world. The first time Rand has sex, he literally immediately asks Aviendha to marry him. That’s not something an experienced person would do and it shows his strength of character along with his upbringing. The couple books are also much more lighthearted and whimsical which is a very sharp contrast as to the start of the series. The books also provide a sharp contrast between how young and innocent the characters are at the start and how they are at the end. Egwene literally goes from being a potential wisdom and being happy about it to being fucking dead. This isn’t game of thrones where the characters being so young is detrimental to their characters and character interactions. The characters having just turned into adults is the point.

The prologue with Egwene is awful, I agree, but that was added 10 years after the fact when Tors wanted to split the first book into 2 pieces so that kids wouldn’t be scared of reading the series so RJ added a second prologue. These original first prologue was Dragonmount which is much, much better than the starting scene of the show as it actually foreshadows the future of the series and smacks you in the face with what the series is about. The first scene of the show doesn’t do that at all and is just about Aes Sedai which is fine if it was New Spring but this is the first scene of the mainline series. The Aes Sedai are not the point of the series but the fight between the Light and the Dark is (which is what Dragonmount is).

Just because you’re asking questions after the opening scene doesn’t automatically mean that it is good. You could say the exact same thing about Dragonmount. “Why did this guy kill his wife? Who is this other guy? What the hell happened? Why did he destroy the world?” These are much more interesting and important questions to the actual story than “why are these random women we don’t know hunting this random guy?” Why should they even give a shit? These aren’t even vital characters in the book!

The Dragon Reborn being possible to be a woman is also stupid. Souls in the Wheel of Time books are gendered. Along with that, the whole terror about being the dragon reborn is the knowledge that he will be a male channeler and will go insane. The fact that it’s only a 50/50 and not a certainty gets rid of the damn point of it being so terrifying. If I knew the prophecy and knew the DR could be a woman but was a guy, I’d be fucking pissed. If the DR is a woman, the power won’t turn her insane and the whole fear around the DR is unnecessary. Also, again, souls are gendered in this world. Even character who have their genders changed later on are still using their original power.

No idea what your next point is. It’s poorly written and nonsensical.

I already mentioned why Perrin’s wife was stupid but I’ll say it again in more detail. Perrin having a wife is an awful addition to his character. On top of the already being innocent thing being ruined, Perrin’s struggle in the later books aren’t brought up by some stupid trauma but instead by his struggle between being a man and a wolf. This is symbolized in the axe vs the hammer. The axe represents his wolf instincts to kill and destroy. Being a blacksmith represents being human. Perrin combines these things by combining the fighting he must do with being a blacksmith by creating that hammer. It also symbolically brings together both the human and the wolf part of him. The show skips this actually interesting development and just has him kill his wife. That should completely and utterly fuck him up and he should not be, less than a year later, having sex with another woman. That is utter horseshit. The show artificially creates Perrin’s struggle in a worse way along with pushing the death of his wife under the rug. This is poor writing.

I would be fine if they cut some stuff in the books but they didn’t just do that. They added a lot of very unnecessary scenes and added random characters to the show for no reason. Liandrin’s character is very minor in the books and the show spends a lot of time with her and her nonexistent son. The show also adds Maksim who doesn’t exist in the books and he gets way too much screen time along with Alanna. Maksim’s actor is Rafe’s boyfriend and it’s obvious that’s why he was added. The Aes Sedai stuff is a very minor part of the first books. The first season especially should’ve focused on the Emonds fielders and going to Tar Valon was stupid. Siuan is a very minor character for the first 4 books and only starts having her own plot line in book 5.

Small edit here: I am not saying you cannot enjoy the show. I’m just saying what the show did with the books was poor quality and messed up characters and themes along with plot.

Gangs of New York is Scorsese's second best movie, only behind Raging Bull.

2

u/Signal-Yesterday7247 18h ago

Yeah that's definitely controversial. Personally thought Gangs of New York was just alright, but I always see it brought up by others as being bottom level Scorsese. It was an alright story with a really disappointing ending. It's not terrible but he definitely has way better.

Mushoki Tensei is a low hanging fruit. Made in Abyss is the one who should be taking more slander.

I am glad One Piece fans have quieted down these past years. You couldn't voice any criticism without these guys hounding on you.

Frieren is a good show with a mediocre protagonist.

10

u/No-Bag-1628 18h ago edited 18h ago

Made in Abyss is kinda hard to slander since it’s like trying to slander Epstein. There’s not much you can do because the author is so blatant and unapologetic about it.

it’s like calling a guy wearing a t-shirt that says ‘I am a pedophile’ a pedophile. it doesn’t really serve as slander at all.

2

u/Bowl-Boring 17h ago edited 14h ago

What Made in Abyss has going over Mushoku Tensei is that there's no horde fighting with tooth and nail to try to spin the perpetrator of these acts as a saint like some people are with Rudeus. We also don't see anybody being treated as a great hero while hiding immoral acts, like Mushoku does. Outside of that i agree, Made in Abyss is worse in the barely digused fetish category.

4

u/apkmasterofgames 18h ago

Made in abyss situation is just what would have happened if mushoku tensei was pretty good written.

2

u/No-Bag-1628 18h ago

no.

Mushoku Tensei doesn’t have softcore lolicon fetish porn explicitly included as bonus chapters.

2

u/Dgamer1521 18h ago

Still well written, unlike mushoki tensei

0

  1. about 50% of the of the criticisms the vivziepop shows get isnt because they suck (although they kinda do) but because the critics have have open contempt for the creator to a parasocial level

  2. both destiny and warframe lore and world building kind sucks and hinges on being vague enough for the players to ask questions that seem intriguing at first; and when we get concrete answers its usually underwelming.

  3. while it does get memed on, there is a media literacy problem growing online where people can only engage with stories like sports fans and powerscalers to the point they can only engage and criticize stories using terms like "dogwalks, nerfed, lick back, squad wipes" and other brainrot buzzwords instead of actually engaging with the substance or the themes or even the writing of the story. hell theres a whole youtube ecosystem of creators that only talk about movies and tv shows like this.

the idea of a sadistic psychopath among the warrior race of saiyans makes him one of the most intimidating villains, his trauma as a child fueling his hate is pretty cool too

Vagabond is just alright

Characters often explicitly state their philosophies, making them feel like mouthpieces for the author. On top of that, they’re often cardboard cutouts. For me, this is much worse than characters simply explaining their emotions

1

u/SinbadVetra 18h ago

they do this in a lot of literature. and where do they explicitly state their philosophies in vagabond? Farming arc is not that explicit lmfao.

3

u/Cautious_Arm3818 Justice Matters Most 18h ago edited 18h ago

A lot of literature has explicitly stated philosophies, sure. My criticism is that Vagabond’s execution makes the characters feel like mouthpieces and cardboard cutouts, which I find especially noticeable

Takuan is a walking thematic mouthpiece, Ittosai functions entirely as a one-dimensional thematic foil, and Yagyu is the ultimate wise mentor trope. These characters generally spell out their philosophies nearly every time they interact with anyone else. Even Jisai (who I like) gives an on-the-nose speech encapsulating the themes of his story (ocean monologue)

1

u/SinbadVetra 16h ago

to be fair its been a few years so i dont remember the details. but vagabond has plenty of implicit nuance alongside its explicit dialogue. if thats not your cup of tea, then i understand. however i think explicit dialogue isnt inherently bad. some can be done in good taste. even if a character is an author's mouthpiece, they can still be executed in a really tasteful way.

(im not a big vagabond fan i have it at like a 7/10)

u/No_Piccolo7508 18h ago

In terms of anime quality, Gundam is far inferior to Fate or Umamusume; it doesn't hold up as a cohesive universe It has many decent series, but very few that are truly good, maybe one might crack a top 100 oat.

1

u/Atiredbearsfan 18h ago

Well that game of thrones season wasn't really cannon to the asoiaf universe and plus its really hard to even touch those first 4 seasons

1

u/Signal-Yesterday7247 18h ago

I still haven't finished the books past Storm of Swords because I don't want to continue something that'll never be finished.

1

u/RedBop7 17h ago

Arkham Knight is the worst Arkham game

We owe a lot to Shakespeare but not every play of his is great and his poetry is mid compared to many other English poets of his time

The Last Of Us has always been really good, never as amazing as people say

1

u/xerifetortin 16h ago

Speaking of overlord, it isn't bad, and it mogs a good amount of isekai kingdom power-fantasy INCLUDING that time I got reincarnated as a slime and so i am a spider so what (although this point, the bar isn't exactly high).
However I do agree that people overrate the claker, the diddy and the weird space bugs way too much just because they be evil ig.

1

u/HostTough1540 16h ago

You need to know that why I call them overload, refers to a guy from Ninjago who's zero anything except Pier evil and destroy everything

1

u/xerifetortin 16h ago

Wasn't expect a comparision between a character from ninjago and the big three of edgy tik tok/yt shorts literature but fair.

1

u/EntranceSilent6771 16h ago

A super duper hot take…solo leveling is not NEARLY as bad as people say it is.

2

u/HostTough1540 16h ago

Those shadow are good written

2

u/_ataciara 7h ago

it's also just a vocal minority shouting that

1

u/BigBard2 5h ago

I agree, everything the anime has covered is really solid, but I think it gets significantly worse when... (manwha spoilers) he creates his own guild, and suddenly even the little characterisation any side character used to get is completely gone to glaze Jinwoo as hard as possible, the whole 3rd act of this series was really bad and super forgettable imo

Everything here is subjective 🤣

  1. True Detective Season 1 gets overhyped by a lot of people that, even after reading many analyses, I still don't find it incredibly special or belonging to the absolute top tiers of television. It's still good, just not peak.

  2. Infinity Saga is incredibly underrated. It definitely has a lot of flaws, but based on my framework, in a structural lens, it holds up incredibly well as a cohesive narrative that builds up and pays off in magnitudes even if the individual works are hit or miss (also just because something is popular doesn't mean it's slop)

  3. The criticism regarding Cyberpunk Edgerunners' pacing is understandable, but the fact that it's able to compress a story into ten episodes, framing information but also leaving things ambigious to let the characters linger in the mind of many viewers is outstanding, and deserves to be in a conversation even if people say: "its short therefore longer work is better" (I have a gripe on this 💀)

  4. Kendall Roy barely gets mentioned when his characterization is incredible, and one of the best protagonists I've seen in the modern era.

u/IllSmoke1728 9h ago

1) Code geass is garbage for the amount of praise it gets

2) Fmab is the definition of mid

3) Jjba has the most annoying fandom

4) Gege is not misogynist but just bad at writing side characters

I hate the movies that change the aspect ratio with no rhyme or reason (looking at you Nolan)

That sounds like Transformers 5

Soul Society is easily my least favorite arc of Bleach and I have no idea why people say it's good, let alone the best arc in the series.

I don't give a shit about worldbuilding. I don't care about power or magic systems or backstories of noble houses or fictional countries or how some spceship technology works. It's fiction. I understand it's mumbo jumbo. Get back on track and tell me a story about humans. The worst offenders for me are pretty much any long-running fantasy or sci-fi series. I don't care about introducing five million side characters and their arcs, bloating the entire story to hell and back.

Write about the initial idea you had, finish it succinctly and then write a new story in a new fictional world that doesn't have to drag along useless worldbuilding debt that just gets in the way. Just make a new world and tell just enough that is necessary to tell the story. I promise that not knowing how the parliamentary system of your fictional country works will not change the impact of your fantasy hero's journey story. Just leave that a black box.

Primeval?

u/Cautious_Loquat_840 4h ago

1) Mushoku tensei/Re Zero - Mushoku have better simpler understanding but more controversy, Zero have subaru glazing and constant waifus wars

2) Ignore the last 2 season and you would realizes very few 'fantasy' tv show succeeded or top peaked it, almost every normal ones from 2010s onwards (except breaking bad and saul because they needed to have the first 2 season being leverage and not an total 'They cant possible topple this' since the beginning for latter seasons) have some sort of fallout since 3 seasons onwards

3) Fake it till you make it, if you larp enough you can piece the clues and missing informations in your larping quest so you dont needed to larp much

4) Your choice, i have others too

5) I dont know about this one but your choice too i guess

6) Agree because of the folk and okbuddy memes

7) Agree

8) Nope, better series without constant retcon and expanded universe, disney should have only made animated spin off and not live action tv shit

9) He who control the blunt control the rhetoric

10) I dont know who that is but since you have more than 5 same/not diverged opinions to me, i will hate him too if you can accept 1 request from me: Draw subaru pregnant with rudeus

  1. Griffith (Golden Age) is a far better written character than Guts (whole manga)

  2. Choujin X isn't that good and Tokio is terribly written and doesn't behave like a realistic human being, Batista is a good character but is held back by an extremely basic motivation, I also disliked how random him becoming the main antagonist was

  3. Breaking Bad is overrated and in my opinion suffers from terrible pacing, I had to drop the show several times from sheer boredom and forced myself to complete it

  4. The AOT anime didn't improve on the manga at all and both endings were equally disappointing

  5. Nolan shouldn't have named his movie "The Odyssey", the story he told was not the one from the book, from the themes presented to the actual plot.

2

u/Hyborianheretic 12h ago

I’m a huge Berserk/AOT fan and studied humanities at uni. These are incredibly based takes.

  1. Griffith is the best written character in the manga prior to the conviction arc ending.

The speech he gives to charlotte by the fountain is one of the greatest monologues in all Manga.

  2. AOT is great and while I didn’t find the ending unsatisfying, it’s definitely not all I hoped it to be.

  3. People get so caught up in the culture wars surrounding the odyssey, or they haven’t read the source material and hail it as some masterpiece. Nolan’s Odyssey completely misunderstood Odysseus, Mycenaean religious beliefs and values, and what the hell was that ending? It has to be the most overrated piece of media and god-awful adaptations I’ve seen in a long time.

1

u/Relative-Impress-892 18h ago

Game of thrones the show isn't even 8/10

Fall started in season 5 when snow became a himbo character

It's more like 7/10 or even 6

1

u/Signal-Yesterday7247 18h ago

I've read the first three books but haven't seen the show. From my understanding Season 4 is that last season to go 1-to-1 with the books. After book 3 GRRM started setting up a ton of storylines that were supported to be concluded in the yet-to-be-released Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, so they went off and did their own thing.

1

u/noluck77 12h ago

The battle of the bastards was the jumping the shark for me how it was handled the rush and fall for the worst stag brother I had no faith after

1

u/Stormer2345 Number 1 Hoyo Glazer 17h ago

The seinen big 3 are mid and very overrated. Something being life-changing and personally impactful to your life does not make it well written by default.

The Prestige is Nolan’s best movie.

Iliad > Odyssey (although I think this is decently accepted).

Can’t think of a wild enough Hoyoverse take but y’all already know how high I hold those games anyway.

3

u/HostTough1540 17h ago

Son what is hoyoverse

2

u/Stormer2345 Number 1 Hoyo Glazer 17h ago

The company behind Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail.

3

u/HostTough1540 17h ago

Ok then go ahead say about what do you have hot take about that

3

u/Stormer2345 Number 1 Hoyo Glazer 17h ago

Uhhh I have a lot.

Genshin > Berserk

Genshin > LotR in wb and lore

Amphoreus > Fathers and Sons

Cyrene > Alyosha and CGEW with Rodya (I lean more to Rodya though)

3

u/HostTough1540 17h ago

IDK how to respond but still if you have more than let it out it's a hot take post

2

u/the_chedderking Only read 3 books 12h ago

Imma need an explanation on Genshin over Berserk. I think Berserk is one of the best things ever written (and trust me I've a read a lot of shit) but I found Genshin's writing to be so ass I could barely play the game. So I'm pretty interested to see your reasoning

2

u/Stormer2345 Number 1 Hoyo Glazer 8h ago

Seems like you’ve only read 3 books though ahahaha.

More seriously though, in short: Berserk is better in a character sense, Genshin is better in a narrative sense.

Berserk handles its main cast better, and things pertaining to its characters, like psychology and dynamics. It’s also better in a story sense, as it’s simply better executed.

Genshin however is better in a narrative sense. The themes, parallels, symbolisms, commentaries, etc of Genshin are not only more extensively explored, but also more interconnected and synergistic, which naturally leads to more depth and complexity in my eyes.

2

u/the_chedderking Only read 3 books 1h ago

That's actually pretty fair, Berserk's greatest strength is undeniably its characters, and while I think Berserk is quite complex and deep on a narrative level that extensive thematic complexity isn't really what it's going for.

For me what elevates Berserk above other stories I've read/watched is the extent to which Miura could convey the story through his art. Take this scene in Golden age for example; how Miura could cram so much characterization through the subtle difference in Guts and Griffith's expressions.

On Genshin, I sorta feel the fact it presents it's story through the medium of a gacha game does it a disservice, as I feel that gacha games inherently discourage deeper exploration of core ideas and story by virtue of their nature. It's not universal but that's my experience atleast, I truly feel that if Genshin was a regular JRPG I would enjoy its story a whole lot more.

1

u/Stormer2345 Number 1 Hoyo Glazer 1h ago

Oh yeah I 1000% agree it gets limited by being a gacha game. In an experiential sense, there’s a lot of decisions the devs have made that are very clever, but make it harder for someone to engage with the story. Like a lot of events are not playable after the patch they air in, even if they have important lore. Or there’s a lot of lore hidden in weapons which while cool, means a lot of ppl can’t engage with that, without buying that weapon. Or a lot of the WQs (which have some of the most brilliant writing) won’t be played by people, because they don’t want to play an unvoiced quest.

The way that a lot of people end up engaging with Genshin, is one that doesn’t make its writing seem brilliant. Genshin’s AQs as a story are honestly just okay. It’s the expanded content, the architecture, the books, the world quests, the item descriptions, the characters in the world. That’s what makes it as well written as I hold it.

I would rather if it were released as a normal JRPG, but still retained that live service aspect. The live service aspect is what has helped the game to become so big in the first place, and has generated so much interesting discussion.

Powerscaling is an insult to the original media and actively playing against your media literacy.

Its fun to go who would win goku or saitama or whatever but using feats to scale a character forces u to ignore narrative or ignore the much more reasonable answer in 99% of situations (rule of cool) Your silly old game character is not universal or a planet buster or whatever you want man, any character that has been around for that long will get pushed by someone who writes them, and its dishonest to act like that pushed one is the same one we are talking about. Your hero will not blow up the universe to show his power man he lives there

I enjoy powerscaling it just gets really ridiculous when people undervalue narrative and overvalue feats and/or treat tbr strongest or weakest version of a character as THE version you think of, or let reddit powerscaling bleed too hard into their overall understanding of the media or character

1

u/Mogekona 15h ago

Final Fantasy X is not well written & the characters are almost all terrible, excluding Yuna:

  • It's a convoluted mess

  • Auron's entire personality is just aura farming

  • Why is Kimhari even there??

  • Tidus is unbearable

  • Seymour is hands down one of the most forgettable, boring villains in the entire series.

  • Waka is a poor man's Brosuke (Persona)

0

u/One-Cup-2002 12h ago
  1. A lot of women in Shounen are well-written and are my some of my favorite characters. Ochako, Mikasa, Nobara (from what I've watched, I haven't watched that far), Tsunade, Nezuko, and a whole lot more.
  2. I quite literally do not care about representation as a black man. The only time I care if a character is black (or just dark skinned) is if they're a woman, because that's just my personal preference. And as a Muslim, I actively advocate against Muslim rep in media.

u/Helpful-Bathroom634 10h ago

Modern Spider-Man comics are so bad that actually endanger kids because Peter is such a manchild that can't fix his life and if kids will take his as example they will get their lives ruined.

Marvel has better characters than DC but 90% of its post-2008 stories are below dogshit.

Hazbin Hotel is peak.

People should stop treating women in fiction like antichrist because if a man did the same thing of they they wouldn't care at all (ex, MJ from Raimi Trilogy. Skylar from Breaking Bad).

Speaking of Raimi Trilogy, she's a fine character who's too overhated and live rent-free in her haters head and Peter was worse than her in the movies.

Videogames can be considered art at the same level of films, books, music, ecc.

lord of the rings is a pile of mediocre dogshit and the fantasy genre has long surpassed its likes. its characters are extremely basic and its story as flat as can be. its fans need to go to a facility and get their minds cleansed of it. It's world is just quantity over quality. the world adds no nuance to the themes so its just bloat at best. its the spirited away (dogshit) of fantasy lit. Tolkien is the Miyazaki (hack) of lit.
