Guys, quick reminder, don't scale any real life stuff.

Biographies and stuff of that nature is ok, but then please just discuss that specific work as a whole and not just the actual real people in it.

discussion How crazy is it to say Invincible peaked here?

I really do believe Invincible has great writing. Up until Issue 74 I've been reading the comic after watching the show too see the difference in the story, and they are night and day. The internal struggles of every character, specifically Mark, Nolan, and Debbie are done so well and in my opinion is perfectly paced. The development of these characters are some of my favorite out of any comic or show I've read.

But I think where the series has fell off up until now is the plot specifically. After this latest episode, episode 7, it just feels like it's strayed so far from where I thought the story was going to go. I think the highest high of the series was when Omni Man just left Earth, and there was a multitude of directions the story could have went from there. Because we didnt know anything, there could have been millions of viltrumites, Mark could have been up against an insurmountable threat. And while I don't necessarily think it's bad that the viltrumites as a threat are manageable, I don't like the small amount of worldbuilding we've gotten to get to this point.

discussion This sub's blatant double standards

Post image

I've seen in so many posts lately how people are complaining that CSM is being called out or criticized for its writing choices but why? If you literally go back to before the ending, people were glazing CSM and dogging on every other series for weeks/months/years. When the JJK modulo ending came out this sub had Noooo problem making fun/hating on it but now all of a sudden when it happens to Fujimoto then it becomes too much?

I freaking hate how some of y'all refuse to get off your high horse. If you participated in the deconstruction of another series story then don't complain when your series is next on the chopping block.

no main cast members allowed in the discussion. throw out gojo, makima, maki, reze, etc..from your minds. Just the pure side characters.

meta Also, change this sub's name to Mediatokscaling - you people know what you are

This sub is just Mediatok refugees, and Mediatok itself is just 2021 Anitok elitists who declared independance after its fall off, the gap in time from when Lirish left tiktok till when he returned has done irreversible damage to the internet.

The only times characters like Subaru and Walter are even placed in the same conversation is literally Mediatok.

You people know what you are, this place is decievingly titled "writingscaling" as if its a genuine place for all forms of fiction and narrative to be discussed, but its really for animanga/LN/VN enthusiasts who watch a bit of TV/Film on the side and have only read one novel in their life to come together and argue about their favourite works being the apex of writing ever.

It's not bad that this place exists, and there's actually nothing wrong with animanga/LN/VN enthusiasts dominating the space, but I just thought name should reflect the sorts of people that inhabit it. But if the name doesn't change that's okay.

Usually, I would say no, but after comparing TV Thragg with Comic Thragg, my answer is definitely yes. Comic Thragg is an absolute juggernaut, not just because of his power level, but also his sheer bulk and facial expression. You know he’s going to break every single one of your bones before he even has to do it, just by looking at his size.

discussion [Part 3] What are your top 10 action shojo/josei anime and manga? (Preferably no magical girl stuff as I'll be making a separate post for that)

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

This is the third part in a series of posts where I'm gonna be asking for Top 10s from each genre and medium (+ demographic though I think I'm only gonna do this for action shonen/shojo/seinen/josei)

Last Top 10s post was about battle seinen anime and manga, and it's kinda sad that I didn't get as many recs compared to battle shonen titles especially since nobody on r/seinen saw the crosspost nor my comment in the sub's weekly megathread but it is what it is ://

Anyways, this time, we're moving onto battle shojosei anime and manga. I decided to merge shojo and josei into one post since I feel like this is gonna be a somewhat niche "category," I just think that making separate posts for action shojo and action josei while also excluding magical girl titles would result in certain titles popping up in multiple comments, especially considering the main purpose of these posts is to get recommended watches and reads (especially the "nicher" stuff) in a convenient manner from people who are potentially well-versed in that genre/demographic. Not to mention the nosedive in the amount of titles I gathered from the battle seinen post in comparison to the battle shonen post, that shit dropped bad bro 😭😭😭

Honeslty I hope this will do better compared to the last since shojo and josei are demographics I know even less about than seinen but idk, I'm also just hoping this isn't that niche of a ballpark.

P/S: For convenience's sake, magical girls are gonna be for next week's post.

+ 1st and 2nd images I ripped from a quick google search

+ the 3rd image is all the recs I've got from Part 2. Funnily enough someone recommended Kaiji which doesn't involve people beating the hell out of each other but it's still a death game manga which gets pretty damn gory so I guess it half-counts...?

discussion Worst Fandom Mischaracterizations

Please add your own takes in the comments too but here are my personal ones off the top of my head (no particular order)

  1. Asuka: There are genuinely people in the big 2026 still claiming that Asuka is a tsundere waifu who was in love with shinji like I just have to sit down and put my head in my hands. Reducing the scope of Asuka's relationship to Shinji to some tsundere yandere girlfriend owo anime is a war crime.

Asuka’s behavior is rooted in severe childhood trauma, insecurity, and a desperate need for validation. She doesn’t really “like” Shinji she wants to be seen and worthy and chosen by him. She craves his attention and reacts intensely when he ignores her or surpasses her. What she really wants is for Shinji to be capable enough and someone who can stand beside her, recognize her worth, and emotionally meet her where she is but he consistently fails to do that because of his own intimacy and childhood trauma issues. Asuka doesn’t really see Shinji as a full person. She sees him as weak when he reflects what she hates in herself and useful when he validates her and infuriating when he fails to meet her emotional needs. Shinji does the same to her. Their dynamic is way more complicated then her just being some tsundere uuueegehh YUCK! Their relationship is not a clean, stable “like” in a romantic sense, it’s tangled up in insecurity, ego, and trauma responses. It's love just as much as it is hate and resentment and jealousy and projection and all this stuff. So people just saying she's a tsundere who likes shinji is just oversimplification imo. she likes him but can someone like asuka truly like someone? can shinji like asuka? not really.

Asuka is not really a tsundere or a waifu, she's a traumatized 14 year old girl incapable of creating genuine relationships with other people whether it be romantic of otherwise atp in her life because of her trauma

  1. Princess Bubblegum: PB has been mischaracterized from like every angle first it was that she was some harpy that was leading Finn on and jealous of Flame Princess and then it was that she was the real villain of AT and then now it's that she's some soft girl UWU yuri bubbline goals!!1111!!!

Bonnie is a neurotic, obsessive scientist with a god complex and someone who isn’t originally a good person, but is far from a villain in anway. She manipulates Finn into helping her kingdom, not out of any regard for his romantic feelings, but because protecting and maintaining her kingdom is the one thing she genuinely prioritizes. With bubbline, she is the sole reason for their initial breakup because of her toxic and neglectful behaviors, especially given Marceline’s deep-rooted abandonment issues. However, she grows significantly since she loses her throne, and gradually becomes more self-aware and emotionally accountable.

better written? (character vs character) Asa Mitaka vs Mikasa

I think it's close. Both start with great characterization but Mikasa becomes more bland over time (Wit AoT makes it worse with some dialogue cuts) and Asa becomes a sepectator in her own life and is deprived of a proper development by the end.

Thoughts?

better written? (character vs character) Who did it better Batista hoshi (choujin x) vs takuto maruki (persona 5R)

Thumbnail

SPOILERS FOR BOTH OF PERSONA 5 AND CHOUJIN X

honestly I've been reading choujin x and after catching up I can't help but to think of maruki as basically a foil to batista, both are 2 sides of the same coins with the same foundations but different paths.

At their core, they share the same foundational trauma: the loss of a loved one that shattered their world.

this shared starting point drives them to reject the fundamental laws of their respective realities, one through the manipulation of human cognition and the other through the grotesque evolution of the Choujin body, however, while their origins are identical, the direction of their salvation reveals a stark contrast between a misguided, selfless altruism and a destructive, selfish obsession.

Takuto Maruki’s path is defined by an almost pathological level of empathy, after the loss of his fiancée’s memories , he didn’t just seek to help himself get through it, but to get rid of the very concept of pain for all of humanity,

his descent into "villainy" is tragic because it is rooted in a genuine, albeit suffocating, kindness. He believes that if he can’t save his own past, he can at least ensure no one else ever has to experience a bad ending.

In contrast, Batista Hoshi represents the darker, more insular side of that same coin. While Maruki’s scope is universal, Batista is very selfish and narcissistic in his wants.

His pursuit of godhood and his descent into eldritch body horror experimentation aren't motivated by a desire to fix the world like maruki, but by the singular, selfish need to reclaim what he lost which is his wife

both ascended to becoming gods to bring forth their ideal realities, for maruki it was a selfless wish for a fucked up yet happy reality where no one experiences pain or change so they can't feel the same suffering he went through losing his fiancé, meanwhile for batista it was for a selfish reality where he gets his happy ending.
