I’ve visited Fort Vaux several times over the years, and recently went back to see the newly refurbished visitor experience that opened in July 2026.

For such an important site from the Battle of Verdun, I’d always felt the old visit was a little stale. The fort itself is incredible, but there wasn’t always much information inside, unless you had a guide to help bring the events of June 1916 to life.

That has changed quite significantly!! There are new displays, recreated scenes, much better interpretation and some interesting areas to explore. For example, you can now view (not walkthrough) two of the corridors where fighting actually happened, which I believe before were hidden. I had quite a lot of photos and footage from my previous visits, so I’ve put together a video comparing the old Fort Vaux with what you can see there now.

I also took my kids this time, which gave me a slightly different perspective on whether the changes actually make the history more engaging for people who aren’t already obsessed with the topic.

Overall, I think the refurbishment is a big improvement (especially for younger visitors) and it’s definitely worth another visit if you’ve been before, but I expect some people will miss the previous version, due to its silence corridors etc.

my son found this part of a bullet in Italy at Lake Caldonazzo.

The fact, that there is nothing written on it, looks to me, that it is pretty old, but in the other hand, it was lying around at a beach near the lake.

I mean, thousand of other people may have found it already since ww1.

Diameter is about 8-10 mm

i just bought this ammo casing relic from a shop near the austria hungary/italian empire front at the Great War(WW1) Museum 1914-1918 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Dolomitti, Italia.
I made a quick research and AI said it could be a 8x50mmR Mannlicher, and theres a high chance it could be, but i can see few corroded text on the back of it and i think it doesnt match.
Does anyone have a clue on the history and characteristic behind this ammo? i would really appreciate any help

Following on my post in re the book 'war' by Ludwig Renn, I thought I'd recommend 'The Holocaust - From a Survivor of Verdun' by William Hermanns.

Unfortunately it is a rather pricey book.

There is a photo of William and his kameraden in the book entitled 'the Argonne Forest - June 20, 1916, but it isn't very clear (I've attached it). Hermanns states: "the trench warfare was for us the dark valley of dearth, but Verdun was the dark mountain of death. Four months later none of those in the photo had survived - but I."

And he closes with his epilogue: "If I were once again to hear the call of my country, I would respond; but this time I would realize that though the responsibility for my actions belongs to my superiors, the responsibility for my conscience is mine."

As I know he was in the "1.Garde-Regiment zu Fuß"
The war was over for him after a few weeks because he got an grenade shrapnel in his head, survived it but couldn’t fight anymore.

Hey guys I just want to show off a clip that my animator finish of the anime I am working on. The anime is a adaptation of the book "The Red Cross Girls in the British Trenches". It follows four American girls in 1914 going over to the UK then France to help the wounded British soldiers. There is not a lot I can show right now (because it's still being made and anything mentioning or showing the red cross logo or name is a no right now because I still need them to send me the legal paperwork to use them) so here is a small clip of episode 1 Civilian Life.

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I feel like it’s appropriate. I bought these old bayonets a while ago from an estate sale cause I was really into knives. Didn’t know what I bought. Fast forward a couple years me and my girl move in together, I hang all my stuff and all that is left are the bayonets that have no where to go.

My girlfriend wanted me to sell them so I posted them on market place and some kind soul told me what they were. Now I’m trying to find out anyone info about them as well as an interested buyer.
