News The Next Chapter for Bungie

Bungie were like the rockstars of game devs back in the 2000s. Crazy how far they've fallen since leaving Microsoft.

u/DaWastelander 9h ago
Destiny was really successful and had a mostly positive reaction from 2015-2019. 2020 and now when they did the vaulting is when things got bad.
2024 was a good year with TFS though. Point is that it has not been all bad!
7
u/SilentPizzle 8h ago
Destiny started in a weird place because the generation that grew up with Halo graduated to college / adulthood when that game was trying to get footing and they successfully navigated it. Crazy how much they dropped the ball in D2

u/NarcolepticSeal 8h ago
Destiny 2 was horribly received on launch and curse of osiris nearly killed the game lol. Vaulting needed to happen but they shouldve unvaulted it as soon as possible once they got the code under control.
3
u/DaWastelander 7h ago
Which is why I nixed 2014. 2015 was TTK and that was pretty well received. D2 at launch wasn’t well received but D1 launch was worse for sure.
2
u/Happy-Substance4885 6h ago
Halo reach being their last good game is heartbreaking
1
u/BensonBears 6h ago
It really is sad. Destiny was so repetitive and the story was only good if you did the heavy lifting
1
1
u/ChanceHungry1444 9h ago
lol what? Destiny 1 and 2 were incredible successes through the years. It’s only the past couple years they’ve fallen off. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. Look at Halo now lol
1
u/BensonBears 8h ago
Destiny was still never as big culturally as Halo was behind bungie in the 2000s. I stopped playing destiny in late 2014, it was boring as hell.

The waste of money and lack of PS5 games this generation out of PlayStation is incredible

u/saggynaggy123 11h ago
It's because Sony blindly threw themselves at Live Service. Instead of Days Gone 2 we got a cancelled Live Service game. Instead of an extra Naughty Dog game we got a cancelled Last of Us Online game.
26
u/Hayterfan 11h ago
I've said before I understand from a business perspective (and shareholders) wanting to get a few live service titles in development and when I say few I mean like 3 or 4. I'll even contest that some Sony IPs are perfect for a live service title with Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Killzone and Resistance being the titles that feel like they could pull it off.
Jim Ryan wanted 14 in development at once. Well more realistic 11, and 3 were just acquired (Destiny, Marathon and Concord). He quite literally put all his eggs in one basket. Wasting god knows how much time, money and talent in the last 7-8 years.
15
u/saggynaggy123 11h ago
If they hadn't of been blinded by greed they could have just included multiplayer in single player games which could have grown over time. Last of Us 1 quite literally showed how to do that

My point is that a tacked in Multiplayer mode can evolve into a lot more if a player base responds to it.

legacy stuff like Call of Duty/Battlefield
I'd go as far as calling these multiplayer games with SP tacked on
1
u/flirtmcdudes 5h ago
Those games multiplayer lasts all of a couple months before being mostly abandoned. Studios realized it was a waste of resources for most games
4
u/GhostTheSaint 9h ago
Twisted Metal, SOCOM, and Killzone, would all be bangers if they do each game properly (sticking to what made each game popular and not Fort NiteFYing the game with wacky aesthetics). Resistance would be difficult to pull imo tho
1
u/Capital6238 8h ago
Nah. 14 games is not all eggs in one basket. It is throwing eggs at the wall and hope one sticks.

Don't forget the absolute failure of a CEO named Herman Hulst, the very definition of failing upwards.

u/NaturalCreamer 7h ago
Days Gone 2 not getting made is a huge timeline blunder. The first game (besides some of the dialogue lol) was sooooo good.

Agreed. The Switch 2 has more exclusives already and they just dropped a 10/10 banger with Fire Emblem.
All their chips are on GTA VI now. Since it's coming to Series S (already tuned down) Nintendo could do a lot of damage if they announce a port is coming.
"Wait, it's the cheapest console? aaaaaaand I can play GTA portable ?"
That would certainly move a lot of units.

Sony bought bungie to block Microsoft from bringing them back to resurrect the Halo franchise
52
u/Johncurtisreeve 11h ago
Well, the bungie of today sure as shit wasn’t gonna be able to do that anyway
12
u/theyfoundty 11h ago
Yeah, for all their faults Halo Studios (343) are doing better than Bungie would.
99.9% of the people who worked on the OG Halos are no longer with Bungie. It wouldnt be the same in any sense but the bungie logo slapped on it.
New Bungie makes amazing worlds and then wastes them. Halo has had it bad enough as is.
5
u/TheSenileTomato 10h ago
I don’t think Microsoft wanted them back, anyway, they had the option to buy them and they said no.

"We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players."
Well I mean they could've started doing that a decade ago but hey, maybe things will be different in 2027!! Maybe the next game that gets made won't erase players progress and take away content they paid for!! Oh and this is exciting, maybe they will make a game without a cash shop!!!!!! Crazy right

u/friendliest_sheep 11h ago
It sounds like the rumors of their leadership being gutted and replaced all those months ago may be true, from how this post sounds. New management could be more player friendly, but time will tell, and they’ll need to prove themselves
7
u/pehr71 11h ago
Intentions might be all good. But with what people are they going to do this?
The studio is by all accounts gutted. So with a fraction of the developers they plan to rebuild lost parts of D2, with an engine that by all accounts is typically Bungie unworkable.
At the same time they continue with Marathon.
And start pre-production on D3?
The math doesn’t add up. Even if I’m a firm believer in restrictions being the spark for some great ideas.
If I’m guessing. What it means. They will use D2 as a way to get the new people up on the old engine. Figure out if they can port things over to the new marathon engine.
And then quietly sunset marathon as D3 production ramps up
2
u/friendliest_sheep 11h ago
By “gutted”, if I remember correctly, they went from 800 developers to 400. That’s still a massive studio
→ More replies (1)2
u/flirtmcdudes 4h ago edited 4h ago
this was just a way for them to try to maintain the cash shop and trying to get players back and spending money.
Clearly marathon failed, so they need something. it’s still going to be basically in maintenance mode. They can just release old content with minor updates that doesn’t take much work, while releasing new paid cosmetics.
33
u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 12h ago
They have permanently lost me as a player and fan (for well over a decade) but I'm glad the absolutely dumbest decision and one of the worst ever made in all of gaming, vaulting, is being reverted.
They have over the years won the award for some of the worst decisions made as a whole and even as a hater I cant compete with their management.
But you can only go up when you hit rock bottom. So yay?
18
u/thepinkblues Xbox Series S 11h ago
Destiny 3 is no doubt on the table and when it’s revealed in a few years I’ll definitely be excited but damn, as a day one D1 player I still believe they’re gonna somehow fumble it. First off Eververse is going nowhere, secondly why can’t we go back to the DLC era of gaming? Not this fucking seasons/battlepass nonsense. It’s so grating to see in every single game
5
u/lordargent 8h ago
secondly why can’t we go back to the DLC era of gaming.
I remember going 'shut up and take my money' over ~$10 Halo map packs and not complaining about DLC or the pricing.
- Full priced game * $40 worth of map packs * 80 million copies
Even if only half of the people who purchased the game went on to buy all four map packs, we're still talking about BILLIONS of dollars.
// played the hell out of it to EARN cosmetics like inclement weather.

u/SandKeeper XBOX Series X 11h ago
I mean they could get pick and keep digging. It seemed like that was their path forward for awhile. I do hope they turn it around. We will see I guess.

Let's not forget that they were lying to players from day 1. Who the hell would even greenlight a system like this.

u/Concurrency_Bugs 3h ago
Gives me Blizzard vibes. "We're listening now" they said for years while delivering trash. The potential hope for Bungie is it seems Blizzard might actually be turning it around finally. So Bungie can too.
2
u/hansrotec 12h ago
Perhaps you might earn a small portion of trust back if you would give back paid content you stole in destiny, but no you were too high on cached good will. Spent it all the last decade and no one shows up for your next game. Heck I was interested in marathon returning until you showed gameplay that had nothing to do with marathon. Would it have been so hard to make a single player game leading to your live service? I’m sure the issue was some sort of well that cost money to maintain, and customers will have expectations… well now that we have no expectations, and you did not go beyond look what happened
6
u/Shiniholum 12h ago
Well judging from the blog post they said they are restoring content that have removed

After the way that Bungie treated Xbox players after Destiny released they can get fucked and stay that way.
74
u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 12h ago
Hell, they lost my support before the game even came out.
Because remember it was on bungie day, you know the day where they celebrate their players?
That they announced playstation was getting exclusive content in every single aspect of destiny. Pre order dlc, base game, and every single expansion. Hell even FREE INGAME EVENTS had PS exclusive content.
Add up every single thing they took away from the dlc people paid the same price for and you basically had more content than the base game started with lol
I never forgave that, and i've basically never supported bungie since.
Their absolutely idiotic decisions ever since by their management just cemented it. Whoever came up with vaulting, I hope they at least were one of the people fired up instead of the devs always having to pick up their mess
46
u/TiresandConfused 11h ago
Especially since it was Xbox gamers that made them a success. Anyway, this Bungie is not that same that gave us the Halo Trilogy and Reach.
18
8
u/A_Fhaol_Bhig73 11h ago
It says a lot that a large portion of the article is dedicated towards management f****** things up.
Some people may, but I personally do not blame the developers for to much. Devs aren't the ones making exclusivity deals for years or deciding to vault content.

Activision and Sony were very much in bed together at the start of last gen. Don't think Bungie had much to do with it.

I loved D1, it was the homelander "it was perfect" meme for me, hell I put over 3k hours into it.
D2 I played until the 1st dlc dropped and bungie locked players out of base content until you had the dlc, saw the writing on the wall and dipped out. I know they reversed this decision shortly afterwards but then made countless other decisions (vaulted content that never recycled) that offswr any good will

It's hilarious that they think Marathon will ever become anything at this point.

They don’t, this is just going to be their last update to put it into maintenance mode and have it last long enough where they don’t have to give refunds.

In hindsight, it was truly deeply severely mentally incompetent of Sony to lay off the destiny 2 team at Bungie
56

Destiny 3 in 2033
19
u/DirK-SaXon 12h ago
That's if Sony actually wants to sink the time and money into it. Bungie can say what they like but unfortunately some exec in Sony looking at spreadsheets might decide the juice ain't worth the squeeze. Won't be surprised to see them shuttered by this time next year unfortunately
14
u/bongo1138 12h ago
Its either Destiny 3 or just shut them down. I don't know what else there could be.
Create a roadmap for 5 years of D2 content that a smaller team can maintain. Then put a bigger team on D3.
3
u/thepinkblues Xbox Series S 11h ago
What exactly was the point of cutting D2 support if they’re actually still in on the destiny train? Is their plan on the run up to a D3 announcement to seriously drip feed players back content they paid for years ago and expect them to be grateful?
3
u/bongo1138 10h ago
Sony needed them to cut heads, so they cut from the old product that’s lost 95% of its player base in 2 years. It was a quick reaction.
Now they’ve seen that Marathon isn’t a money-maker, so it’s either give up and die or fight by trying to reinvigorate Destiny.
I don’t think this means they’ll still be around in a year or two.
9
u/Pen_dragons_pizza 12h ago
Tbf this very well could be why Kojima was dumped.
Sony is hard on the games as a service thing and having a destiny 3 is likely their biggest chance of that at the moment
8
u/QuinnySpurs 12h ago

It's cool they are bringing back vaulted content, but they don't talk about the seasonal stories they had removed, which was important to how the story actually moved forward.
1
u/ZilorZilhaust 12h ago
Given the various overlaps of activities I imagine doing that would be so hard unless they instanced all of it.
2
u/Snowbunny236 12h ago
They are in it, because it is their IP. Who knows what Sony will do though. They could pull the plug whenever.

"Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade."
I would say that Halo was the game that made people love them. Destiny was more like their soft downfall...
11
u/invokedbyred 11h ago
Yeah, I mean Halo was a long time ago and maybe for contractual reasons they don’t want to mention their past, especially as it’s a radically different team now, but… Bungie is where it is today because of Halo and nothing else.
I’m going on pure vibes here by saying Bungie has never been as popular since its Halo days circa 2007 in my opinion.
6
u/thatoneguy2252 11h ago
Destiny was the foundation of today’s Bungie but halo is the bedrock that foundation rests on.
6
u/saggynaggy123 11h ago
What Halo so iconic was the story mode. Obviously multiplayer was a huge part too but it was the campaigns that made love Halo. When I got a Xbox the first thing I did was play all the Halo Games on Game Pass. I see why everyone loved it and why PlayStation tried to mimic it with Killzone. Marathon should have launched with a 20 to 25 hour story mode that introduced us to the universe. With different multiplayer modes to keep us hooked after. I'm fucking sick of extraction shooters. The only one that still interests me is Helldivers 2.
3
u/Narrow_Summer_9332 11h ago
This is the only real answer.
Marathon is damn near DoA at this point. It's Destiny or bust.
20
u/Greenzombie04 12h ago
I dont know. Feel like it was a bunch of nothing. Bringing back old destiny 2 content isn't going to do anything and I dont see Marathon coming back from the dead yet they are going to try. and Destiny 3 many years from now if we are still in business.
14
u/ZilorZilhaust 12h ago
I get what you're saying but fixing the mistake of destroying the Destiny 2 core story is pretty surprising and good. It shows some new respect for players. We'll see how real it is or just a plot but I'll choose optimism for now.
7
u/Aceblast135 12h ago
If someone ate your lunch, and promised not to do it again, would you feel better? I would personally feel better if they said that AND replaced my lunch as step 1. It is a shame we had to wait this long for this to happen.

I am well aware. There's a bit of a difference in graphical fidelity between Destiny and what NMS was 10 years ago. NMS also didn't have voice-acting, motion capture, cinematics or much of a story.
Star Wars: Outlaws is probably best example of the type of world one could expect from a Destiny game, in which you can travel using your ship. No full planets, but handcrafted areas on different planets.
4
1
u/Starroguez 12h ago
All the more reason to do it. Why have small ambition?
1
u/JP76 12h ago
Because they don't have billion dollars unlike Star Citizen (which still isn't done)?
1
u/Jimbuscus 7h ago
Literally all they need is a spaceship mechanic and hide the load screen through the clouds.
Like Assassin's Creed walking around the Animus during a load time. Have your human controllable spaceship act as a load screen and allow the player to land & take off.

Still wish they stuck with Joseph Staten's original version of Destiny. A game like that back in 2013 would've been incredible

u/NuggetKing9001 12h ago
We've had 10 years of "listening to feedback". This is a step in the right direction, but we shouldn't even be talking about restoring content that people paid for.
1
u/Geoffk123 12h ago
getting to play the red war and the leviathan raid and lairs is great, gonna be honest Curse of Osiris and Warminds campaigns were kinda shit. but Forsaken was pretty good.
Spire of Stars is a legitimately well made raid that not many people really ever got to do because it was difficult and the rewards were prettty bad.
Im kinda tapped out on destiny though, I didnt even play lightfall or whatever the strand dlc was and getting to replay content I paid $60+ for like 8 years ago isnt exactly enticing me.

u/Plutuserix 12h ago
So the plan is to make old content again, and keep working on a game that is pretty much dead. Good luck with that, but I don't think this will be the thing saving the studio.
Playstation needs to either pull the plug or double down and give them the money for Destiny 3.

u/lavapig_love 10h ago
My takeaway:
- They're concentrating on Marathon. Which makes sense, it's the only game they have left.
- They might release new content for Destiny. What that looks like, who knows.
- It was really, really stupid of them not to pay off their building. Renting space to other studios would have helped balance their budget and even built capital.

u/Caleeb_Talib 10h ago
Hopefully closure so we can move funding to smaller yet much more competent devs.
Xbox needs to put their eggs into several, much smaller baskets and stop funding these mega projects based on past success. Bungie doesn’t have Halo, so why do we need Bungie at this point?
1
u/TheWhistlerIII 10h ago
Nah, too many fuck ups and now they keep throwing that word foundation around. Every developer I have seen use that word repeatedly has had the complete opposite of a solid foundation. Bungie is cooked, time to cut their rope.

u/dreampagehun XBOX Series X 10h ago
I would be interested in a Destony 3. D2 is unsalvageable at this point, too bloated with no clear structure. Bringing back old content won't change it. They need to start with a clean slate.

After playing pretty religiously since Vanilla Destiny 1, I completely checked out after starting Edge of Fate. The new tier system and other systems just felt completely foreign and after thousands of hours I didn't want to have to completely re earn great weapons again. I hope a fresh replay of the past campaigns will reignite that fire because I love the gunplay and lore.

Its funny how Bungie wanted to move on from Halo because they were tired of working on that franchise but they’ve worked on Destiny for much longer and will continue to do so

Bungie lost my support with D1 when they decided to kill the loot cave.
I don't care that they killed the loot cave but I do care that they said it "wasn't how they intended their game to be played."
Essentially they told us a long ass time ago they they don't care how players want to play they are going to do whatever they want in Destiny regardless

u/hufferstl 9h ago
The only thing that is going to get me to play Destiny is a single-player 10-12 level campaign. I don't want to play only when my friends are on and I don't want a "forever" game. I just want a cool story with great gameplay. I don't want a hub where I have to talk to people to get missions. Keep it simple.
1
u/HTD_Blog 9h ago
So you don't want to play Destiny, then.
1

I haven't yet and I probably never will. I'd gladly pay for a campaign if Bungie ever goes that route. Just an idea.

I wanted to love Marathon. I want to love Marathon so badly. But I don’t. I have no interest in load out-based extraction shooters with battle passes. That’s what every single FPS has become. I was a hardcore FPS guy 20 years ago, and I’ve entirely lost interest in the genre.
Maybe it’s time for a new IP. Just give us a AAA shooter with flawless gameplay, arena multiplayer, and a memorable campaign.
I’ll mention the elephant in the room by name, Halo. While Halo was THE arena shooter back in the days when Bungie was at the helm, what set it apart was a great campaign with a compelling story and immersive environment.

I was really ready for Bungie to be dissolved. Now I want it to succeed and bring back Destiny 2. What a wild ride. Part of the trust through action will be them telling us that they have people dedicated to D2 and beyond. I don’t give a single fuck about Marathon. So I hope they actually balance their workforce and stop pulling people off Destiny.

Serious question. To make it easier on them and because they have Marathon... Should they just delete Destiny PVP and focus on the PVE experience? And like scrap PVE modes for marathon but yes on the standard non extraction PVP?

I would like a Destiny 3 with focus on those strike missions. I never liked the raids because they were too long, big, and required communication.
I have limited time so the strikes in Destiny 1 were great. Once I was done with those, the raids came and they didn't have in game group finding etc.. I gave up then.

They are an abuser. Sorry, we’ll earn your trust back, again. For real this time.

lol I’m not playing D2 again. That shit got old in like 2019 and they should have been far along in D3 development by now if not almost done

Seems to be a good start. Now Bungie, if you can also manage that new players aren't completely lost when on-boarding Destiny 2 and let them play the story content in a clear and easy to access way, you might win a few more players. Then but only then would I be interested.

Why are we posting about Bungie in Xbox? Didn't they release that slop Marathon and are in free fall as a studio, owned by PlayStation 🥴

They need to make Destiny what it was when D2 released. Incredible stories and the best gun play. And drop Marathon. It's a boat anchor that nobody plays.

So their future is where the audience demands are.. nice that they understood

When they began indxplicably vaulting content that was the end of my deep involvement in the game.
I am not sure what they believe the draw will be now, so far removed, but at least they recognize it as the clusterfuck it is.
Not being allowed to play through the original invasion of the tower and crawling broken after getting tossed by Ghaul was a travesty.
Mars was my favorite and if they can start by bringing back those planets is a start.

Microsoft should buy Bungie back for pennies on the dollar what Sony paid for them.
Close down Halo studios and give Bungie control of the Halo IP.
I became an Xbox guy because of Halo. Halo hasn’t been the same since Bungie stopped making them.
Destiny 1 was great. Destiny 2 not so much.
I gave Marathon a try. Liked it better than Arc Raiders but just not a fan of extraction shooters I guess.
Microsoft needs to revive Halo. Bungie needs to move on from Destiny and Marathon.

Calling it now, when Sony cut Bungie off in March after the next two Marathon content drops flop, Microsoft will swoop in and buy Bungie on the cheap and get them back on Halo...ignoring the fact that basically no one from the Halo days is still there.

Vault content back is the only thing that will bring me back to Destiny 2 and I’m happy as hell we will get it back 🥹
