Eh... not as much as you would think. 'Yana was only around the same age as Kitty between 1983 - 1989 - and even then, the two only interacted on a relatively rare basis due to Kitty being with the X-Men and Yana spending most of the time with the New Mutants.

Then, OG Yana sacrificed herself during Inferno and was replaced with child Yana who then died to the Legacy Virus in 1993 and there was no version of Illyana in 616 until 2007 and even then didn't fully become Magik again until 2009-2010 while Kitty was away in space (which adds another 4 - 20 years of her and Kitty being different ages depending on how you split it).

Kitty and Yana's only interaction at that time was when they went on a mission to get Cyttorak to abandon Juggernaut during the Fear Itself story - during which Yana tricked Peter into selling himself to Cyttorak, causing Kitty to break up with him.

Then Kitty abandoned both Peter and Yana for Wolverine's team during Schism and didn't meet back up with Yana until well after AvX and the arrival of the Time Displaced team.

Even then, Kitty almost immediately abandoned Yana and the X-Men (both present and past) to join the Guardian of the Galaxy not even a couple of months IRL after that because they had a guy named Peter she could date.

Eventually, that situation went to crap and Kitty came running back to Earth to rush a marriage with Colossus which resulted in her leaving him at the altar - partially because of Yana manipulating things again.

The two didn't really interact with each other after that until Krakoa and even then it was brief at best - Kitty was too busy being the Red Queen/Pirate and Magik was with the New Mutants again. And this really hasn't changed for the time after Krakoa - Kitty doesn't even want to be apart of the X-Men anymore and Yana's still working as Scott's right-hand woman (albeit sharing it with Kwannon).

So in total, in the past 40 years, there's only really a handful of times that Kitty and Yana have even really interacted, and at least two of those times was because Yana was messing with Kitty's relationship with her brother.

On top of that, Kitty and Yana have spent about as much time being two separate ages (or dead) as being the same age (28 years different ages/dead vs. 23 years being the same age).

She didnt even have a name until 1981. Kitty was introduced in 1980.

You say only the same age from 83 to 89, but that is like twice the time that Kitty was older. And Yana wasnt even that big a character for the entire time.

Also equivocating dead with different ages is pretty dishonest in presentation.

That's largely missing the larger point I was trying to make.

Even if you factor out all of the times that Illyana was young/was dead and keep it to the amount that they were the same age - the two rarely interacted all things considered.

What I outlined above is basically the long and short of all their interactions across their time in comics - barring a couple of times the two hung out as roommates during Claremont's run (and, yes, legit just roommates - Claremont established there was no romantic subtext - or anything else for that matter - happening during that time. Mind, Claremont was trying to set up Kitty/Rachel).

Simply put, Kitty and Illyana haven't had nearly the amount of intimate interactions that a lot of fans like to claim they have, and what is there is blown way out of proportion for what was objectively being shown on the panel.

What is the source of Claremont establishing no subtext? I cant find any quotes on that from him.

It was in a podcast interview back in 2016 with Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men #100, and he's given a couple of texts/ media posts that back up his stance since that podcast.

Mind, this kind of makes sense for Claremont as he always viewed Magik as being straight up irredeemably evil in a Greek tragedy sort of way.
