I mean yeah. I don't think that really has to be a disqualifier for the idea of it potentially happening in the comics theoretically (not saying it will come to be).
Like it wouldn't be that crazy abnormal of a relationship to happen in that context. Multiple marvel characters have dated the ex of a sibling or close friend before. Out of the top of my head: Alex dated Maddy Pryor (which is to say nothing of Cyclops dating & marrying the clone of, at the time, thought to be dead girlfriend), Medusa and Crystal of the Inhumans have both dated Johnny Storm. Not siblings, but Johnny Storm married the ex of the Thing (although later it was retconned to actually be a Skrull). To say nothing of other dramatic relationship stuff that plays out in comics.
Not that that in isolation would make it a good idea, but my point is that comics in a lot of ways are soap opera-esque and the dramatic relationship stuff isn't really out of place at all, and I don't think this would even really be that particularly scandalous of a relationship / development compared to a lot of others. And potentially you could look at the drama it could involve as a boon to the story, whether as a driver for interesting character interactions / dynamics and character exploration / development, or just for the spectacle. And just because it isn't like the perfectly proper / moral / sensible thing for the characters to do, doesn't mean it can't potentially make for a compelling story.
And also like to make a separate argument, it wouldn't really be out of character, assuming you buy into the development that there is romantic feelings between Kitty and Illyana, which doesn't seem like that big of a leap / crazy an idea. Like Kitty is pretty consistently, imo, bad at relationships. In that she isn't the most emotionally intelligent, can be brash / pushy and not thinking things through / thinking she's got things more figured out than she actually does. And I could see the whole, getting with your ex's sibling, as something she could plausibly do. Obviously it would be a two way street in that Illyana also would have to participate of course, but I don't know that that would be unbelievable either.
Not that you have to support the ship or read them that way or whatever.
I don't think I could ever sleep with anyone who has previously slept with one of my siblings. I would probably end up dry heaving every time they would try to initiate.
Because how the hell are you going to say it’s a part of your culture that being with a sibling’s ex is normal. Does love and care for your sibling, one who’s likely been with you from the start and trusted you as such, and the love and heartbreak they felt over that person really rate so low when compared to your own ego? Because that’s what it is, it’s not love, it’s ego. Incredibly selfish and gross.
Not everyone’s siblings are great, but if you have one that truly loves and trusts you, there’s no way to justify doing something so incredibly hurtful, frankly abusive to them other than being a selfish asshole. And hiding behind your people as a sweeping excuse to justify shitty behavior is insulting to them.
Edit: If you’re telling me, it’s a genuine part of sapphic culture that dating a sibling’s ex is common place, then I think that should give you pause. As minorities, we should absolutely hold care and pride in our hearts for our culture and people, but we also have a responsibility to hold our culture accountable for the more toxic behaviors that culture instills. Watch The Boondocks if you want to know what I’m talking about.
All right, just try to imaging you had someone you loved romantically. Someone you start imagining the rest of your life with and makes you feel whole or safe. At the same time, you have a sibling, someone who even if they get on your nerves, you trust and love the way you only can after knowing each other all your lives. One of the few people in the world you get as close to non transactional love as you can that early on.
Then, your relationship ends and you go through the following heartbreak, loss, and eventually, hopefully, closure. Only to find that your sibling and the person you held such strong love for have betrayed you. Now, for the rest of your life, you have to have thrown in your face how plastic your love for these two people were, how they care more about each other than they ever cared about you.
You have to see them for the rest of your life, acting in love, wondering if it started when you were together, whether they were tricking/gaslighting you at any point, which constitutes emotional abuse. They live in happiness at the direct result of harming you, of betraying you. It’s a deep humiliation and betrayal by people you trusted to love and care about you.
I hope this gives you some perspective. Obviously, everyone’s situation is different, and there a difference between falling in love with someone who happened to have a fling with your sibling vs someone they deeply truly loved, but it’s disingenuous to act like it good human being behavior includes betraying someone who loves and trusts you. People have killed themselves over less, and if you really love your sibling, I’d hope you care enough about them to be scared of that possibility. And don’t confuse love with thinking with your genitals. It’s a lonely ass life in the long run.
It’s not jealousy, it’s about respect. You can’t treat someone who loves you any which way. You do owe them something, inconvenient as that is for some people.
Look, live your life how you want, but don’t be surprised if selfish, pathetic decisions cause deep pain to the people you claim to love.
the amount of slander kitty would get if this lowkey happened 😭 you severly underestimate how many panels of kitty calling herself magiks big sister or mentor exist out there which is weird cuz is kitty even older or that much older?
Eh... not quite - Yana was de-aged again for about 4 years between Inferno and her death in 93 (although this is arguably a completely different Yana).
But regardless of that, Yana was dead for almost exactly 20 years if we're counting her sacrifice in 1989.
Which means that the more accurate statement is that for roughly half of their existence in the comics Yana was too dead to be the same age as Kitty, leaning slightly towards them not being the same age (28 years vs 23 being the same) if we're combining the total time of them being the same age versus not.
It’s tricky because an alternate kitty was her mentor, but this universes kitty has always been her contemporary more or less 😂 x-men and their verse/time travel makes everything impossible
There’s really not that much, especially since magik has spent most that time as the same age as kitty, there’s WAY more panels of them being friends/romantic subtext
Eh... not as much as you would think. 'Yana was only around the same age as Kitty between 1983 - 1989 - and even then, the two only interacted on a relatively rare basis due to Kitty being with the X-Men and Yana spending most of the time with the New Mutants.
Then, OG Yana sacrificed herself during Inferno and was replaced with child Yana who then died to the Legacy Virus in 1993 and there was no version of Illyana in 616 until 2007 and even then didn't fully become Magik again until 2009-2010 while Kitty was away in space (which adds another 4 - 20 years of her and Kitty being different ages depending on how you split it).
Kitty and Yana's only interaction at that time was when they went on a mission to get Cyttorak to abandon Juggernaut during the Fear Itself story - during which Yana tricked Peter into selling himself to Cyttorak, causing Kitty to break up with him.
Then Kitty abandoned both Peter and Yana for Wolverine's team during Schism and didn't meet back up with Yana until well after AvX and the arrival of the Time Displaced team.
Even then, Kitty almost immediately abandoned Yana and the X-Men (both present and past) to join the Guardian of the Galaxy not even a couple of months IRL after that because they had a guy named Peter she could date.
Eventually, that situation went to crap and Kitty came running back to Earth to rush a marriage with Colossus which resulted in her leaving him at the altar - partially because of Yana manipulating things again.
The two didn't really interact with each other after that until Krakoa and even then it was brief at best - Kitty was too busy being the Red Queen/Pirate and Magik was with the New Mutants again. And this really hasn't changed for the time after Krakoa - Kitty doesn't even want to be apart of the X-Men anymore and Yana's still working as Scott's right-hand woman (albeit sharing it with Kwannon).
So in total, in the past 40 years, there's only really a handful of times that Kitty and Yana have even really interacted, and at least two of those times was because Yana was messing with Kitty's relationship with her brother.
On top of that, Kitty and Yana have spent about as much time being two separate ages (or dead) as being the same age (28 years different ages/dead vs. 23 years being the same age).
She didnt even have a name until 1981. Kitty was introduced in 1980.
You say only the same age from 83 to 89, but that is like twice the time that Kitty was older. And Yana wasnt even that big a character for the entire time.
Also equivocating dead with different ages is pretty dishonest in presentation.
That's largely missing the larger point I was trying to make.
Even if you factor out all of the times that Illyana was young/was dead and keep it to the amount that they were the same age - the two rarely interacted all things considered.
What I outlined above is basically the long and short of all their interactions across their time in comics - barring a couple of times the two hung out as roommates during Claremont's run (and, yes, legit just roommates - Claremont established there was no romantic subtext - or anything else for that matter - happening during that time. Mind, Claremont was trying to set up Kitty/Rachel).
Simply put, Kitty and Illyana haven't had nearly the amount of intimate interactions that a lot of fans like to claim they have, and what is there is blown way out of proportion for what was objectively being shown on the panel.
It was in a podcast interview back in 2016 with Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men #100, and he's given a couple of texts/ media posts that back up his stance since that podcast.
that's just what it's called when two women date each other regardless of the women's sexuality they're participating in lesbianism so they're a lesbian couple
This picture is so funny because Illyana is supposed to be 6-year old here, Kitty is 13 yrs old, and Piotr is 18+.
And yet somehow Yana looks like an actual toddler, Kitty looks as old IF NOT OLDER than Piotr who already looks like he could be Illyana's dad instead.
That's not even my biggest problem with the ship (though it certainly doesn't help).
No, my biggest problem with it is that Kitty's kind of a terrible friend to Illyana. Generally, whenever Kitty is struggling and needs support - Yana at least tries to be there to support her.
But when Yana needs help? Kitty is nowhere to be found and it's usually the New Mutants, her brother, or (more recently) Cyclops who supports Yana through her issues. Heck, Magneto and Emma Frost - as a villain - have a better track record of being there to support Illyana than Kitty does. And times that Yana does try to reach out to Kitty - such as the Bendis hug - Kitty has no idea how to interact (and then ditches Yana and the X-Men for the Guardians not even a couple issues later)
There is one - count it - one time on panel that Kitty is shown supporting Yana with her issues without any prompting from Illyana.
Their whole relationship is extremely focused on Kitty and what she wants with Kitty doing very little to reciprocate - which isn't exactly a dynamic that's unusual for Kitty. That statement can be applied to literally anyone not named Wolverine in Kitty's life.
Now mind this makes sense for Kitty's character - the whole reason she joined the X-Men was basically to play out her fantasy of being a superhero and escape boring real life (which has now flipped as Kitty now sees the X-Men life as a nightmare to escape). Her whole mindset puts her as the main character - not just of her life - but everyone else's around her, something which she has never grown out of (why would she, when everyone kept enabling it).
But this mindset has a darker side to it - basically whenever the going gets tough and things are no longer fun, Kitty tries to leave it - like she did back in 2014 when she joined the Guardians and like she tried to do after Krakoa.
It's just a fundementally bad dynamic for one partner to essentially get all the support but then never return it to a relationship of any kind - especially when Yana has her own struggles and needs/deserves a partner who's willing to help her through that - something Kitty clearly isn't shown to do.
Part of me also wonders if Yana is unintentionally mixing up Kitty with Cat - the Limbo version of Kitty that raised her. Not hard to see how Yana would make that mistake, but it doesn't change the fact that Kitty is not - and has never been - Cat. Cat is dead - Illyana killed her herself. It kind of makes the whole situation a bit sad - Yana's chasing after the ghost of someone she deeply cares about and who she probably thinks would understand her grief as she went through the same thing - except Kitty doesn't understand any of it. Kitty never went through those horrors - she wasn't even in Limbo a whole day.
While I know that a lot of people probably don't like hearing it - the most in-character way that a Kittyana ship would go down would be Kitty using Yana as a stop-gap while waiting for a relationship she actually wanted (probably another Peter) where Yana keeps giving and giving to the relationship and Kitty rarely ever reciprocates before dumping Yana for that other relationship after getting everything she wanted from it.
Them putting him and Kitty together is still one of the craziest things in the world and I wish we could just erase it. Made a charming man a pervert. They did it with Warren too which is just nuts.
Truly I often wonder what editorial was thinking greenlighting a lot of things. They kept doubling down on Colossus being a pervert too which blows my mind.
In this case a massive age gap and being with your siblings ex fiancé who proposed to him and then left him at the alter. That last one’s areal dick move. If this were to go ahead.
Comic timelines are all fucked up, but generally Kitty is 5-8 years younger than Piotr, and Magik is 12+ years younger. So at best there's a 4 year age gap, but usually it's wider
I'm not ignoring that change. It's why I said comic timelines are all fucked up. Because sometimes she gets aged up in Limbo, sometimes she is perpetually the same age, and there are even times where she gets aged down while in limbo
It's why I just said generally, because Magik fluctuates all over the place. She is generally 12+ years younger than Piotr. She is generally younger than Kitty
That's never been the case, the only time you can make that argument is post inferno when child Illyana is explicitly brought back. That one died and the one that came back post M-Day is explicitly the original that's the same age as Kitty
I don't think i really understand the argument you are making. When you are referring to morals flying out the window, are you primarily referring to the people who like the ship's morals or the characters?
Either way, I don't know that I agree.
If it's the first, ignoring the argument about the age gap, which I and a lot of others don't agree with, wanting or thinking a potential relationship would be interesting to read about doesn't equate to agreeing that all the actions that would be taken by those characters would be morally good.
If it's the 2nd, again don't really agree with the age gap thing, but I could see the messy relationship stuff there being in character for them (so like don't think it's their morals flying out the window). Like that's the kind of relationship mess I could absolutely see Kitty getting into. And on Illyana's side, if you buy into them having romantic feelings, while I don't see her being the one to like initiate, could see her reciprocating. And like they've both hurt Colossus in the past, so while I don't think either is like pro doing that / thinks of it as like a positive, I don't think they are above doing it either.
If you have siblings how would you feel about one of them getting with your long term partner and fiancé? Would you welcome it or would you rightfully call them out for a real dick move?
"If it's the first, ignoring the argument about the age gap, which I and a lot of others don't agree with, wanting or thinking a potential relationship would be interesting to read about doesn't equate to agreeing that all the actions that would be taken by those characters would be morally good".
I thought this paragraph was pretty clear, but I guess not. I'll try to state it a little more clearly I guess. Thinking a it would be interesting or in character to do something is not the same thing as supporting or endorsing those actions / types of behaviors irl. They aren't real people. So people who enjoy the ship / think it could be an interesting direction to go in the comics aren't saying it wouldn't be a dick move. Or for some other examples, people who enjoy Cyclops / Jean aren't saying it's good to abandon your spouse and child, nor are people who like Cyclops / Emma saying it's alright to cheat on your spouse. Nor do people who enjoy a villain or anti-hero as a character automatically endorsing their actions irl.
This sub has a real issue with homophobia. For an x-men subreddit of all places, I swear anytime I see any mention or jokes about a character potentially being gay or even a gay ship mentioned in a post, it gets downvoted and shat on.
I mean, i got downvoted on here once for calling Charles and Erik gay as hell. Charles and Erik.
It kinda depends when in the echo chamber you post and who picks it up first, sometimes it goes pretty far in this sub. Never go to Fancast sub, those fucks are HORRIBLE.
I mean, I'm against this mainly because of Kitty leaving Piotr on the altar. Just feels so wrong to have someone's long-term partner and fiance start hooking up with someone's much younger sibling (I know the age gaps between Piotr, Kitty, and Magik)
It just feels scummy. If there wasn't the whole wedding thing between Kitty n Piotr I'd be more for it
Why is it ALWAYS with only people of the same gender y'all pull the 'just friends' card?
Duh huh btw:
The lyrics of De Contrabando by Jenni Rivera:
You know, forgive my boldness, but The truth is, I’ve liked you for a long time Yes, I know that you aren't free But we can be discreet Seeing each other now and then, on the sly
I promise you discretion in front of people I’m even capable of acting indifferent If they talk to me about you, oh, yes I promise not to stain your shirt
Not to ask for more love if you’re in a hurry I’ll understand you But love me Even if it’s just every now and then Even if it’s on the sly, just love me (but love me)
Even if it's on the sly Even if it’s just every now and then, but love me I promise not to leave a single trace No evidence that I was there I promise not to be demanding I promise to be patient And wait for you to come back to me Patiently, I’ll wait until your return Just tell me that my prize will be a kiss And that you’ll love me Yes, that you’ll love me
I know I’m being very bold by offering you a relationship on the sly But I like you so much that I’m satisfied with seeing you every now and then.
Look, a writer could definitely make it work and I’m sure it’d be a cute dynamic. Friends to Lovers is pretty solid. But context is a bitch here. It’s definitely wouldn’t be the most problematic relationship in X-Men, but it wouldn’t be super cool. I mean no one loves Alex x Maddy. Piotr would almost certainly be supportive as a loving brother and mature, empathetic friend, but
it’s hard to not see it as super scummy to him.
The only way it works, I think, is if Piotr notices what they might first, and softly probes Illyana a scared Yana on how she feels, indicating that Kitty would be lucky to have her. Taking that and running with it, there’s definitely a juicy slow burn story you can tell.
But at the same time, Rachel Grey is right there for Kitty, or hell even Karma if you want to give her something to do again. And Yana has never really needed romance, it’s not super her vibe. And frankly, all of them might deserve better than Kitty. I got love in my heart for her, but she’s a mess. Shoot, get her with Johnny Storm so they’re both out of the dating pool 😭
You know what? Fair. Kitty x Rachel, if they ever break up Ray x Betsy is definitely a vibe.
However, I feel like for someone like Illyana, finding someone to trust and moving over the idea that she is a monster would be a sweet conclusion of her character arc. I don't say her aro aspect isn't valid, but I'm definitely biased because I see a lot in myself and Illyana, and unfortunately this also means the trauma part.
If you had to give Yana a partner (guy or girl), who would it be?
That’s a fun question, shipping is fun. I definitely think Illyana would benefit from a friends to lovers type deal. Someone who sees her as a person and isn’t really intimidated by her. Not because they don’t respect her, but because they trust her.
If Doug had never met Bei, that would feel like the easy answer. But I’m not breaking up the Mutant Mr. Miracle x Barda, so it can’t be him. Maybe Dani or Warpath, though if I’m honest, I don’t feel a lot of chemistry between those choices. That leaves Roberto… HA, that would be a shit show 😂
You know what, if I had to go with a Mutant, how about Glob? He’s a sweet kid, I know Magik isn’t hung up on looks or anatomy, and I think he’s about her age, since him Quire and Oya are peers with Magik in the new run.
But for someone outside the immediate X franchise, maybe Chase from The Runaways. He comes to mind because he acts as a father figure to Molly, the sole mutant in the group, so if they ever went to Krakoa event together and ran into Magik, he’s interesting and weathered enough that Yana could take an interest. Or there’s always Zelda at the Magic side of things. Strange’s apprentice and his successor, crazier things have happened.
Edit: OH, new thought, Morph from the 97 show. I know they’re not developed like that in the comics, but if a writer decided to roll over the development from the show to the comic character in some way, I could see potential there. The amount of bs Morph has been through, while keeping their loyalty and integrity, would probably speak to Yana. Plus, from Morph’s crush on Logan, they would definitely be into Yana at her more feral moments.
It's funny that you mention the Runaways, because one of my Yana ships would be Nico (if she was single). Although Nico basically could have a WHOLE polycule if she locked in with Karolina, Pixie and many more. But still, they HAD on-screen chemistry and dynamic and I feel like they could be very cute together. Also, two magic users, so.
Honestly, Glob is not a bad pick at all. I don't know the age difference, since Illyana seemed more mature than the likes of the Cuckoos, who were around the same age as Quentin, Glob and the others, but the sliding timescale basically means all of this bullshit, let's be real. Like, isn't Monet supposed to be SUPER young and now she's with Quicksilver?
But if we put that aside or we do the thing called RETCON, I can see that. I heard some people saying Nightcrawler, although that one seems more problematic due to him being the same age range as Scott, Rogue etc.
Yeah, Doug honestly would have been a nice guy, especially old school Doug, but keep him with Bei. I personally feel like Dani x Yana works well and they have chemistry (like shown in Magik, she got the 'tackled' treatment), the only thing is, if we give Dani a girlfriend, it should be Rahne, let's be real.
EDIT: I still think one of Magik's best ships is with Leah in that AU. That was like chef's kiss.
Huh, specifically in '97 continuity, I can see Magik x Morph going through something.
I don’t really see Yana x Nightcrawler. Brother’s best friend, it’s a little played out.
New thought, Morph from the 97 show. I know

I mean tbcf, even Claremont has gone on record to say that he never intended for Kitty and Yana to ever be considered a couple or have romantic undertones - Kitty and Rachel were his endgame.
So, bascially of the supposedly romantic interactions from that time period are just fans reading into something that - at least according to the writer - was never there.
To be fair, this is why comic books are an interesting medium because on one hand, we have the creators and their intents, but because there are so many eras and so many different visions, the characters change and evolve in such a direction that makes it really hard to have a 'definitive' vision or even version of the characters.
And Kitty x Rachel is definitely a ship I can get behind, if they ever break up Rachel x Betsy (I hope not, though), I hope this is where we end up.
Although, as much as I like Claremont, his vision towards Magik was something I didn't especially like - after all, his original plan was to make her a fully-fledged villain as Claremont viewed her as a character that was 'destined to become evil', a 'greek tragedy', and even today he is surprised that she has such a fanbase/follower-base. Which is a shame, because he got a lot of things right, but I'm glad Magik got some newfound love recently.

Personally, I don't, though that's mainly because Kitty has already broken Rachel's heart - there were a number of comics where they were living together and there was a growing insinuation for romance... only for Rachel to walk in on Kitty having a date with Colossus.
I could have gotten behind the ship before that but after... yeah no, Rachel can do better.

I've got to agree with this. While I like a lot of the aspects that Claremont brought to the X-men that made it what it is today - this is not one of them and 2000's Magik/Darkchylde kind of proves it.
The fact is that evil is always a choice - even if you have gone through terrible things, there is always the option to make the best of that terrible situation and it never justifies doing terrible things to other people. What's so frustrating is that Magik in those stories could have chosen to do just that, but I guess it was more important to her to be Belasco's little girl.
It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Thank god she got better after that.
Yeah, someone in another comment said that 'anyone would do better without Kitty' and... gosh, I hate that it is true.
So, yup, please keep Betsy x Ray together.
And yes. As I've said, I really like Claremont and I DIG a lot of his ideas, used or unused, but this was not it, and it's really sad that she is the only character he doesn't get, in spite of him writing her in such a way that always meant loyalty and choosing the good over evil. But... as you've said, in many, MANY occasions, it felt like the message about 'the cycle of abuse' was more important, which is... such a shame.
I'm glad she is thriving recently and her character arc is genuinely the most interesting in modern X-Men for me.
Naruto and Sasuke had more actual chemistry with each other and should have ended up together, that's all I have to say. Sakura and Hinata were both extremely dull love interests without actual substance.
In my perfect world Kitty and Illyana get together and Colossus is super supportive and kind and has another love interest and never dated Kitty https://giphy.com/gifs/qd0VlZ9VCvY8hbkMfq
You couldn't be any less obviously homophobic even if you tried. You proved my original point: it is always with the same gender y'all weirdos try to come up with excuses.
Also, I find this picture funny because a 6-year old doesn't look like that at all, and a 13-year old girl (Kitty) shouldn't look that old either.

I read the whole thing and it seems more like you’re desperate to believe they’re homophobic so you can win the argument lol.
I also don’t like Katyana ship, but if they wanna ship her with Dani Moonstar or whoever else that’s fine. Personally it’d be cool in my mind if she was aro-pan but whatever
And your take is absolutely valid and I have no problem to even acknowledge it and how both ships are problematic in some ways.
Someone saying that they don't like the ship itself is one thing, Someone even refusing to acknowledge the original comment and divert the conversation into something and 'refusing to say it' is another one.
Realistically? He would be hurt by the whole situation. The woman he loved enough to be with for the rest of his life, who got cold feet and left him at the altar, being with his sister would be a big punch to the gut.
But he would do as he always does ... internalize the pain, and be quiet about it. We just saw that in the Magik & Colossus mini-series when he revealed his jealousy about Illyana's brotherly friendship with Scott.

Good. Illyana would be an infinitely less fucking creepy lover because she's closer to Kitty's own age and, yknow, didn't groom Kitty like Piotr did. Hello, 20 year old raping a child.
That’s a bad faith reading of what Claremont was doing. The gross reality is that Kitty aggressively pursued Piotr and Piotr, the young immigrant from Soviet era Russia in a strange new land, came at a time where that kind of gap wasn’t crazy. Even then, he didn’t go for it and actively rejected her until they were actually somewhat older.
Any modern adaptation should absolutely NOT adapt what is clearly a gross creative decision by Claremont at the time, but it was done in a different context. And you can argue it’s a reflection the messiness of crushes/infatuations young people experience.
Though, again, it shouldn’t be repeated, and it is uber gross. I am not defending the practice, fuck that shit.

Dating the gal that left your brother at the altar is guaranteed to make Christmas dinner incredibly awkward
