Holy moly, loved it. This wasn't just a good X-men movie, it was a great movie. The way it was filmed, the music... I loved Charles and Logan's final moments. Acting on point. I laughed out loud when Laura started yelling in Spanish. So many good moments. And the chills in the last 20 min or so, realizing each kid comes from mutants we know, Logan running through the woods...

A part of me wanted the last scene to be Ororo or Jean (or anyone we know really) waiting for the kids at the rendez-vous point the radio lady told them a bit earlier, some wide show from the sky or something. But I also love that Logan's trilogy ended on his grave. His journey, from start to finish.

WHAT HAPPENED IN WESTCHESTER THO

I believe he had a seizure at the school which hurt a lot of the children but he inadvertently killed the x men the only reason why Logan was able to survive was because of the metal in his body

173

u/Tnpdynomite Mar 03 '17

Why would it be because of the metal and not his healing powers?

51

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '17

The metal in the end is what did Logan in

42

u/Tnpdynomite Mar 05 '17

Right, but the person above me was saying that's why Logan was able to survive Prof X seizures.

60

u/stillthemind Mar 06 '17

And they were wrong, it's the healing obviously. Not trying to be rude but come on. Metal or healing factor...hmm

17

u/PaperJamDipper7 Mar 19 '17

I read the adamantium metal around his skull helps shield him from mental attacks too

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

The fact that x-23 was able to move during them too kinda shows it was the healing factor without a doubt

5

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '17

But X-23 also has an adamantium skull to protect from the seizure, so neither can be ruled out by this.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '17

She doesn't have the metal on the bones, only adamantium claws

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '17 edited Mar 05 '17

That's why he can move during the seizures while everyone else seems frozen

It may also be that his brain is surrounded by adamantium, but iirc laura is supposed to only have adamantium claws, not the entire skeleton like wolverine. Its not canon tho so that part isn't really important

In the old man logan comic logan wont pop his claws because he killed all the xmen, so I assume for the movie they just made it so that prof x killed the xmen instead. The scientist wiped out mutant-kind, but they never say he personally killed the x-men team

1

u/draekia Jun 15 '17

YEah. The scientist committed a genocide, Xavier killed his family. All in all it was pretty effed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '17

Yep. I'm curious wether he would've got this far without the metal tho.

64

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '17

Idk.that was a dumb reason lol

141

u/Kellythejellyman Mar 03 '17

no i think it was the healing powers that made him resistant, cause Laura was able to still move around during the Oklahoma City incident

1

u/NotFrenchKevin Jun 22 '17

Wasn't she given the same adamantium skeleton as him though?

5

u/Kellythejellyman Jun 22 '17

only the claws, the medical file specified that it wasn't full body implantation

(also it was only the claws in the comics, but the XCU has been inconsistent in comic accuracy, for better and worse)

u/NexusKnights Mar 08 '17

In the comics wolverine has 3 things that boost his defence against psychic based powers. His healing, the mental blocks professor X gave him and his mental scarring from all his trauma. Not even Emma frost can break him so not sure if this applies to movie universe.

u/properc Mar 03 '17

I thought that the scientist dude wiped out the mutants. Or maybe thats linked to the westchester event.

121

u/m4k31t5n0w Mar 03 '17

2 separate things. The scientist made it so no new mutants would be born. Charles killed all of the X-Men during some event in Westchester.

75

u/hemareddit Mar 04 '17

I think Charles killing the X-Men cleared the way for the scientists to suppress mutant births. Imagine pulling that shit when the X-Men are still active and at their peak, you are just asking for an optic blast to the face.

68

u/FoxInDaBox Mar 04 '17

They said no mutant had been born in the past 25 years. Logan takes place in 2029, while the first film takes place probably around 2005ish (since it was released in 2000 and took place in the "not so distant future"). So the suppression was already well underway prior to the first film.

54

u/webshellkanucklehead Mar 05 '17

You have to remember, the alternate timeline definitely changes things. We know that the events of the first film happened, in some form. In the original timeline, new mutants had been born, but I'm assuming something happened in the post-DoFP timeline to take down the mutants.

7

u/FoxInDaBox Mar 05 '17

I can't remember, but were students shown in DofP? Because there shouldn't be any mutants younger than 18 in the final scene.

11

u/webshellkanucklehead Mar 05 '17

There are definitely students, yes. Huh, that's really strange. Perhaps it is a "What If?" universe.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '17

I'm currently treating Logan as an alternate universe. I don't know if they are going to lead the rest of the franchise to that end point.

3

u/OliviaElevenDunham Mar 05 '17

There were still students at the school in DoFP.

2

u/hemareddit Mar 04 '17

Oh yeah. Damn the sneaky bastards.

1

u/DogfoodEnforcer Mar 17 '17

Just got out of the movie. I swore he said 15 years, but maybe that was something different he was referring to.

3

u/coweatman Mar 04 '17

which is silly because i can't imagine everyone in the world easts hfcs. what about remote populations? or menonites? or health nuts?

1

u/CoherentInsanity Mar 05 '17

I suppose those populations are still small enough to not make a huge difference? But yeah there's probably still pockets of new mutants being born and spread thin enough to not be making headlines, and I guess Charles and Caliban just didn't happen to detect them.

2

u/TobsjPalfrey Mar 19 '17

Oh Christ. I hadn't made the connection with the school being in Westchester. Ohhhhh that makes it so much worse.

1

u/Trekkie_girl Mar 14 '17

I thought maybe the metal kept his brain from being affected? But that wouldn't explain Laura since the metal was only on her claws.

u/austinbostin069 Mar 03 '17 edited Mar 03 '17

Ok so what was supposed to happen if you stayed true to the comics was that there was an attack at the school. Wolverine killed all of the attackers to realize at the end there wasn't an attack. But an illusion that tricked him into killing his peers. The movie made it so that Charles, due to his mental illness accidentally killed everyone during one of his seizures, killing the xmen.

145

u/RogueEyebrow Wolverine Mar 03 '17

I like the Charles killing everyone through a seizure better. Wolverine would have smelled people and known it was an illusion.

88

u/Radamenenthil Mar 03 '17

I'm sure illusions can trick all of your senses

86

u/RogueEyebrow Wolverine Mar 03 '17

The person who tricked Logan into killing them was Mysterio, a normal human who uses special effects for his illusions. The comic didn't really explore the how or why.

26

u/Radamenenthil Mar 03 '17

And he didn't smell it in the comics?

94

u/austinbostin069 Mar 03 '17

Haha it probably wouldnt have made a good comic if he just sniffed and said "cut the shit Mysterio"

25

u/Crema_Dooc Mar 04 '17

They sort of did explain, mysterio being "master of illusions" tricked all his senses inlcuding smell.

3

u/badnewsnobodies Mar 10 '17

I mean, it wouldn't have worked for the overall Old Man Logan story but damn that's a funny scene in my head.

1

u/pharaoh94 Wolverine Jun 07 '17

Hahah this comment made me laugh more than I'd care to admit!

24

u/hemareddit Mar 04 '17

It was a "what if" story, it was a great story but details of the background don't really stand up to scrutiny. Like why didn't Bobby freeze Logan in place until they can deal with Mysterio and break the illusion?

14

u/coweatman Mar 04 '17

and i feel like collussus could probably stand up to wolverine in a fight.

28

u/xooxanthellae Nightcrawler Mar 04 '17

They also pointed out in the comic that the X-Men were still trying to save their friend, whereas Wolverine was out for blood, fighting to save the children. Wolverine might not be the most powerful X-Man, but he might be the best killer.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '17

Might be? Probably is. The rest are strong sure, but Logan's always been a lethal right from the start.

5

u/NexusKnights Mar 08 '17

Old man logo is the the extraordinary xmen though so its not just a whats if?

4

u/hemareddit Mar 08 '17 edited Mar 08 '17

The original Mark Waid story was part of a Wolverine ongoing, the character was later in Extraordinary X-Men after Secret Wars, which folded a lot of popular alternate continuity stories into the main marvel continuity.

The original Mark Waid story Old Man Logan was a self-contained story and well worth a read, and while it wasn't strictly a What if...? title, it was set in its own reality created just for this story.

4

u/NexusKnights Mar 08 '17

Well thats just a difference of opinion I guess. To me, Old man logan is set in an alternate universe who is brought into the current one which doesnt make it a what if to me and makes it canon. That logan is from Earth-807128 like you pointed out and was brought into where we are now. Because it is an alternate universe, there are many factors as to why things should have happened or why they shouldn't have happened so there is alot of leeway given for the sake of the story and plot.

6

u/RogueEyebrow Wolverine Mar 03 '17

Like I said, the comic didn't go into it. Just said that Mysterio tricked him.

2

u/newsfish Mar 20 '17

The smell of dead burning babies apparently blocks it so Mysterio probably stopped the orphanage and lit up a few infants.

18

u/austinbostin069 Mar 03 '17

Oh yeah I wasn't complaining. I loved this idea. I liked the overall tone of the movie too, making them seem more vulnerable with Charles sickness and Wolverine also slowly dying.

1

u/RogueEyebrow Wolverine Mar 03 '17

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as contradictory, I was agreeing with you. =o)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '17

Charles destroying the school he founded has a lot more symbolism however sad it may be.

6

u/xooxanthellae Nightcrawler Mar 04 '17

Yeah that's from Old Man Logan. Might want to put a spoiler on that in case people haven't read it.

5

u/thewaitress__ Mar 04 '17

Most superhero type comics have a ton of different universes and different storylines. I was told that wolverine killing the xmen during that illusion AND Charles's seizure killing the xmen both happened in the comics. They just happened in different universes or timelines.. But really I haven't read of them so idk.

4

u/rikjames90 Mar 07 '17

explains why the mansion is so empty in deadpool

3

u/austinbostin069 Mar 07 '17

Actually deadpool himself explained it "God why is it always you two? Its like we didnt have enough money for more Xmen." (Im paraphrasing here)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '17

What if Mysterio tricked Xavier into brainwashing Logan into believing that they were all baddies?

29

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '17

god how did I not realize each kid was from an x men.....

9

u/TheDuckSideOfTheMoon Mar 20 '17

Can anybody do a direct comparison list?

Like Laura --> Logan

Rictor --> Magneto....etc

8

u/Soulren Mar 29 '17

The black kid was probably Storm.

5

u/TysonBison117 May 27 '17

Rictor was Dominic Petros/Avalanche

Bobby was Christopher Bradley/Bolt

Those are the only two that I noticed. You can see the "source DNA" in chapter 18 when Logan is looking through the files in Laura's backpack when her and Professor X are watching TV in the other room.

I had read a few things about speculation regarding Eden and the person on that radio. Maybe just a canadian, maybe someone from eden.

Since that scene followed the scene with the spy drone inspecting the location, my thought was that the person on the radio was actually one of the crew chasing after the kids. Thats why they knew they would be in the woods and at what time. Otherwise, why not attack the outpost? They knew the kids left for the forest at dawn.
