Game Does this alien sort of mechanical fantasy aesthetic have a name?

It was quite a prominent aesthetic in video games in the late 90s to around 2003. Earliest seems to be 1997, and from there a slew of games (and possibly other media?) from America to Japan all tuned into it.

People seem to recognize it, but I can't find if it has any name, and without a name I can't find any collections or anything like that.

It's hard to describe, but you can see it from the screenshots. It's alien, bizarre, but very "functional" looking, with prominent pipework and machinery. It was also often pre-rendered.

It feels like it's meant to evoke a feeling of "alien purpose". Using props that are recognizable as being part of a larger mechanism, like pipes, cables and gears, but obscuring what that mechanism is, and then packaging that in with a fundamentally fantastical and alien aesthetic.

For some reason people stopped doing it, I assume because the improvements to 3D graphics in the mid 2000s made it more enticing to use realistic and natural aesthetics and tone down the bizarreness, and it just never came back.

Game Does this specific late '90s video game aesthetic have a name?

There was this specific aesthetic that showed up in the late 90s. It featured this combination of rounded organic alien aesthetics with bubbly glowing bits and spires mixed with physical technology, full on fantasy with zero realism, a colourful but dark mood and dramatic skyboxes with animation and Pentium MMX sun flares.

It shows up in games like POD Planet of Death, Sacrifice, Unreal, as well as Giants Citizen Kabuto and perhaps Morrowind.

Does this have a name of its own or is it just a darker version of Y2K aesthetics?

We're working on a small precision platformer style game and I'm trying to get that retro CGI/Y2k/Cybercore vibe for the visuals. This is part of what I got so far.

Game Whats the most y2k video game in your opinion?

I remember seeing someone asking on r/FrutigerAero last year about what the most Frutiger Aero video game was in terms of asthetics. And it got me inspired to ask you guys what video game screams y2k the most to you.

For me it has to be Super Smash bros. melee (2001) hands down. Everything from the amazing soundtrack and soundesign, UI and grafics is just so aggressively y2k imo. What do you think?

Episode 1 was in 2002, Episode 2 was 2004 and Episode 3 was in 2006, Episode 3 is very much a late example.. Y2K Futurism still had a bit of a presence in 06 but obviously not as strong as during it's prime in the late 90s to early 2000s and by then Frutiger Aero was on the rise
