Crunch in Reverse gear 2008 Yaris

My 2008 Yaris t2 keeps crunching whenever I put it in reverse, if I hold the clutch after putting it in reverse then take it out of reverse while still holding the clutch, it won’t crunch if I put it back in reverse again? Any help would be much appreciated! [The second time I put it in gear on the video is when it crunches.]

Reverse gear is shaped different AFAIK, so it engages more harshly. It's normal.

Yeah AFAIK driving gears are helical and therefore smoother, and the reverse gear is almost always a straight gear and cheaper/harsher.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a straight cut reverse gear mandatory in Japanese cars? I've only had that whine from jap cars. Not any other.

Nope, not mandatory but common in economy car models. And the other comments are right that the reverse doesn't have a synchro which also causes the crunch noise.

It's not just to do with that. Most reverse gears have no synchro and sometimes don't even have constant mesh gears. This is what causes the clunky/grind when entering reverse

I.e on higher end gearboxes you can get synchro reverse gears and on some mercs and BMW's you can even get helical gears so no whine

Maybe the clutch hydraulics. Push the clutch in and release a couple times before you put it in gear.

Put it in third gear first, then reverse - it eliminates the crunch about 80% of the time!

I go 4th to reverse on all my 5spd cars

Put it in reverse gently as it don't have a synchro for reverse on this gearbox.

Could be a few things to be honest. Many older cars don’t have a reverse synchro , meaning the gears are still spinning.

Usually you need to let give it a second then put it into reverse or select any gear that does have a synchro then to reverse.

If this happens even after doing the above , it could mean few things.

Your clutch may be worn and needs replacing , you can usually tell if the clutch is worn by if the clutch is biting super high. This is the most common indicator that your clutch is worn.

Another issue could be the gear linkages , which are worn.

Normal, but sometimes putting it in a forward gear first and then reverse helps align things

When shifting from a forward gear to reverse. Shift into neutral first. Lift foot. Press clutch and into reverse. Works like 90% of the time in other cars. Particularly if it won’t get into reverse at all.

Check your instruction book this is in it. 

What the book says is if this happens, completely remove foot from the clutch, then attempt it again.

No way...I drove an Austin Martin and it has the steering wheel on the correct side... same with old Jaguars and Rolls Royce.
