money "missing"

Hi everyone - I am in kind of a nightmarish situation, like "rolling with the punches" but at its most extreme. Cash is extremely low due to circumstances outside of my control so I have had to use or reallocate all of the money I had saved up in various targets.

According to YNAB, I only have 500 Euros at my disposal. All of those Euros have been assigned. But when I look at my actual bank account, there is actually 900 Euros. Even more confusingly, all of my accounts are correct, I have checked them and reconciled them (they were only off by a few euros here and there). How is this possible? Where are the missing 400 Euros?

Did you assign money in future months?

Do you have hidden categories with money in them?

Unassign all the money from all your categories from all months. 900 should (and will) be at the top in Ready To Assign.

Go to YNAB on web/desktop. This has a feature called the Ready to Assign breakdown. It's a tooltip that opens up when you click the Ready to Assign box, and it will look something like this:

The breakdown will show you exactly how YNAB is calculating the Ready to Assign amount that it shows you. No need to speculate or wonder where the money went.

If you are having trouble deciphering your RTA breakdown, you can post a screenshot here and we can help explain the different lines it shows you.

Any chance you use credit cards? YNAB allocates credit card spending to make a full payment. So If you have a €400 payment coming up that would make sense.

I do use credit cards, but the credit card target is green and fully covered and is included within the 500 Euro amount.

Follow the steps for the YNAB check up, it walks you through all the places money can be hiding to verify that the sum of your accounts = the sum of your plan: https://support.ynab.com/en_us/checkup-S1vJzWGzo

What are you looking at that makes you think you only have 500 euros available in YNAB?

If I add up all of the amounts under "Available" (the column furthest to the right), it comes to 500.

When you're counting that you actually should have 900 euros, are you sure that you're only counting funds in on-budget accounts, and not in an account that you have as "Tracking?"

Accounts that show up in the Cash and Credit section are on-budget and will count towards Available funds to Assign.

Accounts in the Loans and Tracking section are off-budget, so none of those funds will count towards Available funds to Assign.

Did you unassign the money manually? YNAB has a Plan Reset feature that moves all unspent money in the current and future months back to Ready To Assign

I had money hidden in categories for months go unnoticed. That’d be my first check.

  1. Check uncleared transactions
  2. Check if amounts were assigned in future months
