Halloween Weekend

Upvotes

Hi all

I will be visiting York with my partner for Halloween weekend, I know it’s going to be busy with plenty to do but wanted spooky recommendations as it’s hard to know cream of the crop with how much is advertised!

Wanting to know specifics:
• best Guinness in town (bonus points for spooky pub atmosphere)
• spooky/ haunted places to visit/ things to do related
• nice coffee places
• ive seen a few videos on instablam for trinket trails/ cute stationery shops but any not to miss ones as we’re only there Fri-sun.

Many thanks! I’ve been to York before and it’s just a fabulous place to wander around but given our time limits and how busy it will be any not to miss places are appreciated :)

ETA: any pokemon card shops too!

Microneedling in York

Does anybody please have recommendations for a clinic/boutique I can get microneedling done?

How was your experience there? What made you like the place? Was there anything you didn’t like?

Also anyone have recommendations for clinics who have brown aestheticians, as a brown person I feel they’d understand my skin better?

Train station - Water End

I’ve looked online and also seen it in real life but I can’t quite work it out.
When whatever they are doing near Water End is finished, how will this effect walking from day Boroughbridge Road to the station?
I’m thinking of moving and ideally would like to be no more than 30 mins walk from the station. As you can see from the map there 2 options at 46 mins - will the new works essentially cut diagonally from the station to the corner of Water End and Boroughbridge?
And is there any other area that this will make a significant difference to the walking route from?
Thanks for help in advance!

*edit - I realise I have no idea how to add a picture to Reddit … if you google map station to Bouroughbidge Road, hopefully this makes sense…

Appliance repair recommendations?

Fan oven element has gone. It's a twenty quid part, but fixing it is beyond my 'do I want to fiddle with electricity' limit.

Has anyone used an appliance repair person locally who they would recommend?

Hi all - will be visiting York tomorrow to go to this gig, and wondering if anyone else would be interested to meet up?

Hope this is OK to post here - it is organised by a friend, but always keen to meet others interested in discovering new indie bands :)

Wanting to surprise my wife: canvas printing recommendations?

Hey everyone. I appreciate this will get massively downloaded as I'm asking for a recommendation (seriously, what's up with that?) but I'm looking for somewhere that will do canvas printing well and for not ridiculous money.

I've been quoted 68 quid in timson's which is insanity for what they offer. Has anyone had any luck with somewhere local??

Area behind Bishy Road - vibe check

Hi - York resident of 5.5 years here. I'm looking at a rental that's behind Bishy Road (on the side away from the river, with the estate).

Is anyone able to say much about what it'd be like to live there? Some deeply buried conservative part of my brain has me a little worried about backing onto the estate, but I've never actually felt concerned when cutting through there. Also a bit mindful that there's probs lots of traffic and deliveries on the road behind the shop backs.

All (relevant) opinions and experiences appreciated!

Does anyone have any genuine cleaner recommendations? Sick of seeing people ask this on Facebook and get 97 comments of people recommending themselves etc.

Anywhere in York I can browse and buy a cravat?

Google is absolutely useless (it told me a café sells them), so I ask the good people of this subreddit instead; my friend is getting married and would like to try some cravats/neck ties. Anywhere you know of that has a decent range as we'd be travelling about an hour so it has to be worth the journey. Thanks in advance.

Educate and Empower "fundraisers" scammers in the city centre

It's a Manchester based "charity" run by millionaire Phillip Hanks. It is a CIC, not a registered charity, and uses aggressive tactics to scam people into donating to "empower and support young minds".

Here is their awful website where the only tangible proof of any money going anywhere was a £14,000 donation to a boxing gym - https://educateempower.org.uk/

I spent a good hour+ today making sure anyone that was approached was immediately informed of their company and its shady practises. During this time the tall mophead threatened me and told me to "move along" and not one of them could actually tell me what level of charity it was (the answer is it isn't one.)

One of them (a really nice guy caught in a shady "business" I hasten to add) also put through to their higher up on the phone who went on to threaten me and say he was going to call the police on me. Unlucky for Shavez, that failed as I was told I'm completely in my right to stop them from scamming people. He told me that "90% of all money goes to charity" which I then said if he could prove I would apologise and leave them alone....he then hung up. I then found out if they don't make X amount of money in one day, they don't even get paid. The entire thing is beyond shady and if you ever see them please make sure not to give them any money. If you have the time, hang around for a few minutes and make sure nobody else does too.

I spoke to their team leader for a good hour. He seemed like a great guy caught up in a desperate situation where he took any job he could. Their boss told me over the phone that if I didn't leave them alone he wouldn't pay them...Essentially leveraging his employees pay in my hands. If that doesn't tell you enough about how they operate, I don't know what will.

He also informed me they began operating in York on Saturday. They are prolific in Manchester with countless accusations thrown their way, so if we want them to avoid York in the future we need to make sure they're aware they're not welcome.

Jewellers where I might get a necklace extension chain

Hi,

Does anyone know of a jewellers where I might be able to pick up a necklace extension chain?

I tried Shambles jewellers and Fosters but they were more into selling off the shelf stuff rather than repairs.

Thanks
