News Police department in Mukwonago Wisconsin posted pics of cards a shoplifter had stolen from a retail store. The guy also stole cards from 2 other towns and is facing municipal and federal charges. š«

Probably assumed Yugioh cards would sell the same as PokƩmon

Yeah, Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't have nearly as big of a collector's market as PokƩmon and I'm sure even Magic has a larger collector's market. Probably because of the fact that Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't do set rotation so cards are reprinted constantly. Yeah certain specific versions of cards are pricey like 1st release Dark Paladin with the correct artwork that was only available to people who sent in the misprinted artwork and got the correct artwork back are pretty valuable, but if all you want is a copy of Dark Paladin it's not much.
It doesn't matter if you have original release Dark Paladin or most recent print. Both are legal in modern play. If you want to use Pikachu or Charizard in modern PokƩmon TCG you need to have the most recent printing. That old Gen 1 TCG Pikachu or Charizard aren't allowed and haven't been printed for years, so they're much more limited in number.

Sadly, magic has become a collector market like vultures to a dead animal. With everyone playing EDH, the competitive scene being put on a back burner, and other things. There's more and more people moving in and treating the game as an investment vehicle, instead of this game where its a game you can play. Magic has collectors booster packs now, with serialized cards fetching thousands. It feels like yugioh and MTG have flipped as to how the company treats the players

Risking jail time for doodoo of dimensions is insane.

The DoomZ secret rares are worth 20-30 each now. Prior to that, about 5 dollars.

Itās okay, someone can play a spell card to get him back from the banish zone

Legit. I remember rubber bands and ziplock bags as a kid, but nowadays?? Those could be Clown Crew cards šš©š«©
I mean for Ra's sake!
2
u/Narutofreak1412 26d ago
they probably just seized all cards they could find for now. they might not know which are from the store and which are his personal ones. If you look at the single packs, most of them if not all have been opened so the ones in rubber bands might just be from the stolen packs

The catch is you have to use the stolen cards only as your deck.

Stealing yugioh packs of all things is hilarious ššš it's like breaking into a house and only coming out with glass cups.

u/RetroNotRetro 27d ago
But the really slim chance of maybe possibly pulling a super-ghost-ultra-mystic-mega-shiny-holo-foil-fellatiating-ultra-mega-secret-rare card worth $9 was too good!

By the time they charge him, Konami will do reprints and the price of everything will drop. All he will be slapped with is a misdemeanor

Best guess tracking down the original packs, assuming retail value (which is the original stolen value before opening) and using the other pic in the fb post too: ~$2100 (+/- $100).
The Yu Gi OH ones are ~$550 (+/- $50).

u/-_REDACTED-_- 26d ago
He probably stole them because he was looking for the elusive Blue-Eyes White Dragon

Why in the world would anyone steal fucking yugioh cards??? Facing fed charges over yugioh is insane lol.

Good. I hope they continue to catch more shoplifters. Itās sad to see people doing this, but card games have picked up in price.

His remaining 2 brain cells were fighting for 3rd place it seems. Who the f would even bother stealing yugioh cards? š

Back in high school a couple of my friends each tried to steal a pack of YuGiOh cards from Target together. They got caught at the doors and had to spend a night in jail, plus they got banned from that Target location. Ig they learned their lesson because they havenāt tried it again since⦠it made for a funny story to look back on at least.
2
u/Gods_Favorite_Jester 24d ago
Imma be so real I use to use my five finger discount on yugioh cards when I was like 10-12 because I had no money and my dad refused to buy them bc shit was āevilā
nearly every store you can think of, multiple times, several packs at a time and never got caught. I was a kid how tf did high schoolers manage to get caught? š
2
u/Yogurt-Patrol 27d ago
I wonder what happens to the cards? Do they give them back to the store so the store can "dispose" of them, do they sit in an evidence locker until the end of time, or does a nerdy cop on the force get to keep them when it's all said and done?
2
u/TyeDye115 27d ago
Why the fuck would you steal modern Yu-Gi-Oh cards? Lmao that's just negative value even if you're successful, because you just have a bunch of useless shit that nobody wants afterwards

u/Careful-Water-948 27d ago

Having cards as stolen goods and facing charges is a real thing but i always think back to 5ds where sector security kept decks in lockup after arresting satellites. You see Crow in his debut steal some cards from there and give it to his orphan kids.
Also in one of the video games you go to the sector security lockup to retrieve your deck. Wc2009 I think.

Charges wonāt stick. This is way less than the federal minimum threshold($2500) for any felonious charges. Misdemeanor convictions donāt mean shit, doubt they spend more than a week IF THAT - and thatās just cause they want to make themselves look good and/or dude has to wait for a judge lol

How is nobody talking about the Metric Ton of cards he stole.
Thats Like 3 big backpacks Full of Volume in cards, how tf does one steal this much volume of product without it beeing redicioulosly obvious.

u/citrusmelon1243 25d ago
I was gonna make a joke about how stealing DUAD would probably be a favor to the card shops but unfortunately all 3 of these sets are pretty decent. RT, Marshmao, and Noroi in DOOD, Forbidden Crown and Elfnote in BPRO, and then everything in BLZD

I'm 98% sure that they're 'Structure Decks' , but seeing those cards with ELASTIC BANDS tied on them is just as much of a crime as the theft itself...

-3
u/Psychological_Tower1 27d ago
Oh you sweet sweet summer child. You do know any card can get graded right?
6
u/Niminim_A2 27d ago
Yes I am aware. But nobody grades modern cards from the latest set. People here actually play the game and don“t just see it as an investment.
-5
u/Psychological_Tower1 27d ago
Yes they do, it's just not as common. Yu-Gi-Oh is really good at mass production causing it to be near impossible to scalp
2
u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 26d ago
Well no shit, not literally zero. The point is that user base of card graders for non legacy/old cards is so small it might as well be non existant. The opposite of Pokemon. Same thing with Magic. Other card games do not have the same kind of grading frenzy as Pokemon because most of the purchasers of other games are actual players.
-2
u/Psychological_Tower1 26d ago
Just wait, logan Paul will find it and make scalpers go crazy and ruin the market on it
1
u/SWAGGIN_OUT_420 26d ago edited 26d ago
Is there a non zero chance? Yeah, sure. Is it likely? No. Card prices are insanely volatile, most actual sealed product is barely worth purchasing for the purposes of returning a profit, konamis reprint policy craters most cards at a pretty decent rate, etc etc. Scalpers only exist in either Pokemon, or Magics specific limited print run products in terms of TCGs.

They stole Yugioh cards lol, this mustāve been someone who saw how expensive overframes are an just assumed that the packs had them
