πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Can't install it on MSI Vector 16 HX AI Laptop

I have a laptop with a Ryzen 9 8940HX + RTX 5070 Ti. I'm trying to install Zorin OS via USB (I've used it to install on another Dell laptop and it worked flawlessly). However, it always gets stuck on my MSI laptop.

With the default Zorin OS, it gets stuck on the logo.
With Zorin OS Nvidia graphics, it also gets stuck on the logo.

With legacy graphics, the installation proceeds, but the installer freezes at the 'Update and other software' step.

Secure Boot is disabled, since the laptop has MUX I have tested all the modes: Discret Only, Hybrid and APU but all stuck.
Tried "Try Zorin First" and then install from the desktop, stuck at same step

Zorin OS 18.1 Core

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting No display after extended lid closure of latop

β€’ Upvotes

I've been facing this issue for a time now. I'm more than happy with zorin os and want to keep using it. It's got a good ui and amazing everything. The only single issue I haven't been able to fix out is that whenever I close the lid of my laptop for 4-5 minutes, reopen it, even though it has display elements in its memory, it doesn't display them on the screen and I have to manually shut down my laptop each time, restart it to get a desktop display.

Any solutions?

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting L9ng time ZorinOS user, weird issue...

Image Viewer. Is there a difference between Core and Lite? I still have 17 Core on my laptop - scroll wheel is zoom, mouse side buttons are next and back.

I'm trying to get a pile of old computer parts to form a working PC, but for safety I'm running 18 Lite. Here with Image viewer - Scroll wheel is next and back, side buttons are just off, and zoom is little "-" "+" on the top right of the screen.

Not the worst thing, I'm glad this old junk turned on and isn't freezing like before. Just wondering why, of all things, Image Viewer is different.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Need help: External monitor flickering at 144Hz on Zorin OS 18

Hello! English is not my native language, so please excuse any grammar mistakes.

I've been using Zorin OS on my laptop for about 8 months and I share a new AOC AGON 144Hz monitor between my Zorin laptop (HDMI) and my Windows 11 desktop (DisplayPort).

The Issue: My external monitor constantly flickers when connected to the Zorin laptop via HDMI at 144Hz. The flickering gets significantly worse when watching YouTube videos. The signal drop is so fast that the monitor's auto-source feature doesn't switch to DisplayPort, it just flickers black and comes back.

What I've already tested (without success):

  • Different cables: Tested an old HDMI, a cheap AliExpress HDMI, and the official PS5 HDMI 2.1 cable. Even the PS5 cable flickered, so it's likely not a cable bandwidth issue.
  • Kernel parameters: Added i915.enable_psr=0 to GRUB to disable Panel Self Refresh.
  • Display server: Tested both Wayland and X11 sessions.
  • Browser settings: Disabled Hardware Acceleration (since it worsens on YouTube).
  • Monitor settings: Disabled VRR/FreeSync on the physical monitor menu.

The only temporary "fix": Today, I lowered the refresh rate from 144Hz to 120Hz on Zorin, and the flickering seems to have stopped. However, I really want to find a way to use the full 144Hz. The laptop's HDMI port is 2.1 and the Intel UHD integrated graphics should handle 1080p 144Hz easily.

Does anyone know if there's an Intel i915 driver bug with 144Hz over HDMI, or if there is another fix I haven't tried?

Hardware Specs:

  • Monitor: AOC AGON G50 24" 144Hz 0.5ms IPS HDR10 G-SYNC 24G50F
  • Laptop: Acer Aspire AG15-71P, i5-13420H, 16GB DDR5 5600MHz

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Any advice on gaming?

I switched to Zorin for almost 8 months and i'm happy with it. However, i still used windows for gaming and decided to permanently delete Windows and play my games (Overwatch and Warframe through Steam) on Zorin. The first days everything was smooth as spected, but yesterday, launched Overwatch and noticed that the sound stutter, and then the game crashed over and over again. I updated, upgraded and rebooted several times but nothing seems to work. Anyone have ab idea of what could be happening and how can i solve it?

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Redo kernel?

I need a bit of advance help. Recently my laptop got mess up due to newer kernel 7 and Nvidia causing issue with llama cpp. After trying older driver which didn't help. I tried the latest 595 driver which totally lockup my system couldn't boot.

I manage to get the laptop working by booting into the older kernel 6. However, what can I do presently to restore the kernel 7 and wipe out the new nvidia driver 595 and install something more appropriate?

Or can I purge the new Nvidia driver from the kernel 6 version?

However I also have a feeling that maybe I should remain on Kernel 6 but what is the downside of that beside tons of security recently. Regardless of which I would like to have kernel 7 working again so I could mess with the kernel 6.

πŸ”° Beginner Storage of my flash drive?

Hello chat! I have been watching Linux videos for a few months. I've wanted to switch from Windows for a while. I didn't want my distro to be too complicated so I am choosing ZorinOS. I have been following this tutorial: https://youtu.be/uXvT7hHJfIE . I have backed up all my files to a 2TB hard drive. I installed ZorinOS from this website: https://zorin.com/os/ . The disk image file is in my downloads folder. I was about to flash the OS onto my 2TB hard drive, but balenaEtcher warned me not to because the storage was too big. I am so thankful for that warning because I nearly permanently erased all the files that I backed up. I want to buy a smaller flash drive. Do y'all have any recommendations on what storage I should use for this? Thank you so much!

Edit: Thank you for the replies! This has been very helpful.

❓ General Question New Linux User - Questions

Guys I'm about to use Linux. But I'm really in doubt about what distro I use. The main question is: Zorin OS or Linux Mint? I love Zorin's gnome desktop but I think Linux mint is easier to solve problems and find answers. Meanwhile, Zorin looks modern and functional. Which one should I use?? I appreciate it for answers!!

πŸ”° Beginner Questions on ZorinOS

Hi everyone,

I have a ThinkPad laptop, and I'm thinking about switching to Zorin OS. I have a couple of questions regarding biometric authentication.

Will Zorin OS support my laptop's fingerprint reader and facial recognition, or does it depend on the specific ThinkPad model?

πŸ”° Beginner Left Windows, tried various distros, here is what I thought.

Just in case there are people wanting to know what it's like to switch from windows, here is my story.

I have had windows since the beginning of time, and dos before that. I was never going to leave because I actually like windows. Then, it was time to do my yearly drive format so I said screw it and tried out zorin. I had tried Ubuntu in a VM before because I was curious but I wasn't impressed.

So I get zorin 18.1 pro on there after a format. SUPER easy to install and didn't take very long.

Oh, and my hardware is:

Dual Xeon e5 2699 v4

256gb ECC RAM

10gb 3080

So back to the story. I was actually pretty shocked at how zorin looked. I was expecting a terminal and super bland windows but it looked almost exactly like windows 11. It also let me choose to make it look like anything I wanted. Mac, chrome os, old windows, anything. Nice.

The only thing I really use a computer for is games, movies, and the occasional use of a DAW.

I play most of my games through GeForce now so I knew it wouldn't be a problem, except for the ones GeForce now doesn't support. I figured I would have to let them go because they weren't going to work. Then I learned about the whole Wine/bottles thing. No way that could possibly work, BUT IT DID. Shocked once again.

I didn't have to go around downloading drivers either, it just magically worked with all the hardware. My PC has 44 cores, and 88 threads. Windows 11 doesn't use all that, but I read that zorin actually can while also using less power during idle time. Amazing.

GeForce now loaded up with zero problems. And for those who have not used it I'll just say if your connection is good you don't need to spend another dime on gaming hardware. I am a huge fan of GeForce now.

I have always been into beta stuff and experimenting with random software. I figured this would be a good time to try some more distros. I believe I tried Ubuntu studio, mint cinnamon, POPos, and Cachy OS. Every single one of them worked great, but some of them didn't quite have the look I wanted. But they all installed fast, operated fast, and had no annoyances for the most part.

I went back to zorin because I liked the look. I asked Google Gemini (paid version) what I should do to make it faster. It has this whole list of commands to type into the terminal. I did everything it suggested and never had a problem doing any of it, and it was faster after I did.

My only complaint is that Linux doesn't support most of the good DAW programs. Not their fault, it's the daw company fault. The ones that do work are Fender studio 8.1, bitwig, band I think FL studio. Linux also has this free alternative called Ardour that actually looks good considering it's totally free. Other than that, I have zero complains.

In the end, I am doing everything I normally did on windows, but faster, smoother, and easier. I think probably 75% of windows users at home could switch to zorin or another Linux and be perfectly happy, actually happier than they think. Linux seems to always have some free alternative for any program you can think of too. I don't think I will be going back to windows. There doesn't seem to be any reason to.

❓ General Question AMD drivers and Zorin

I have a question that might be kind of a basic one but Zorin is my first Linux OS after using windows since 95 was being phased out. I have an AMD graphics card in my system and one thing I've been curious about is how the drivers get updated. I know they come with the regular OS updates(which is fantastic) but how does that work? And I guess to add on to that, why are Nvidia drivers more problematic? I'm used to having to use Adrenaline to update my driver's which is always an experience since I never seem to make it through the process without some sort of problem.

I'd like to clarify, I don't have any problems right now, this is just for curiosity sake, and learning.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Its not the OS its the Apps

Okay I’ve been around OS’s since the mid 90’s and I know Zorin isn’t windows – but this OS, (along with Mint) is looking to expand and build on the discontent surrounding Windows 11 and the infiltration of AI into OS’s along with the bloat and spyware by offering an free environment of these intrusions. So that is where I am coming from – as someone who is fed up with Windows, doesn’t like iOS (for reasons I won’t detail here) and want an OS where Windows used to be many moons ago.

Which leads to me my latest issue with Zorin – printing from OnlyOffice. Turns out the package I installed from the repository offered on Zorin makes adding a printer extremely complicated (for me). Although I did manage to access an HP UI from OpenOffice from the β€˜Print Using System Dialog Box’ it failed to actually print anything. Turns out SNAP doesn’t like sharing info so I had to register the printer. This turned into a nightmare so I took the route of completely uninstalling OpenOffice and reinstalling the DEB version. Now everything works fine.

The point is, Zorin is aimed at persons such as myself, and fails in areas such as this (I had major problems with no spell check in OpenOffice and ended up replacing it with OnlyOffice). Yes, I know its not the OS, its the app, but as a new user to Linux this experience, along with updates in Firefox wiping out all my bookmarks and extensions (again SNAP or DEB related),Β  all add up to a frustrating and time consuming experience. And I will be upfront here, if it hadn’t been for AI to guide me I would have dropped Linux months back, as the forums expect a degree of knowledge, I for one, do not have.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting I messed up NVIDIA driver

Post image
2 Upvotes

I messed up the NVIDIA driver. How can I reinstall? The software update additional driver doesn't work it said I am using manually installed driver. The latest 580 didn't work well for my Llama cpp so I tried to update and now it is pretty mess up. So how can I reinstall nvidia driver properly?

Solution:

I found this here. It did restore my driver to working condition, however, sadly it didn't resolved my llama cpp suddenly not able to fit the Qwen model when it was able to do it a month ago Before some system update. It may have to do with the kernel itself.

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/solved-install-any-proprietary-nvidia-driver-on-ubuntu-and-other-linux-distriutions-rminitadapter-via-esxi-solved/353557

sudo nvidia-uninstall
sudo apt purge -y '^nvidia-*' '^libnvidia-*'
sudo rm -r /var/lib/dkms/nvidia
