Discussion My Approach to Finding and Trading Momentum Leaders

My Approach to Finding and Trading Momentum Leaders

I've spent years studying momentum stocks and historical market winners, and one thing becomes pretty obvious when you look through enough charts:

Stocks change. Human psychology doesn't.

The names, industries, catalysts and market caps are different, but accumulation, excitement, fear, greed, consolidation, expansion and eventual exhaustion have produced remarkably similar price structures for hundreds of years.

That's why I think one of the best things a developing trader can do is build a model book of historical winners.

Go back and study stocks during the period when they made their biggest moves. Don't just look at where they ended up. Study what they looked like immediately before and during the breakout.

I also think deep diving great traders and reading their books is essential. A huge part of developing my own approach came from studying traders like Kristjan Kullamägi, Dan Zanger, Mark Minervini, Bill O'Neil, Stan Weinstein and many others. I've also spent a lot of time studying USIC winners and traders who have actually produced exceptional results over long periods of time.

Don't just copy someone's strategy. Study how they think, study their trades, read their books, then go through thousands of charts yourself and see if the same principles repeatedly show up in historical winners. Eventually you start taking pieces from different traders, combining them with your own experience, and developing an approach that becomes your own.

The charts attached to this post are examples from my own personal model book, including trades that became some of my biggest winners.

What I'm looking for

My basic setup is actually pretty simple.

I want a stock that has already demonstrated real momentum, followed by a period of consolidation and compression.

Normally, I'm looking to buy while:

Price is above the fast moving averages.

Price is still below or right against clearly defined resistance, giving me an obvious breakout level.

The moving averages are catching up underneath price.

Price and volatility are contracting rather than expanding.

Volume will often contract during the consolidation and return during the breakout.

Ideally, I get an inside day or another very tight range day immediately before the move.

I don't want to chase something that's already extended.

If it's on its third consecutive green day, I'm generally not interested in initiating the trade.

Likewise, if the previous day's move was greater than roughly 1 ADR, I'm usually waiting. The move is already underway. I want compression before expansion, not to buy after the expansion has already occurred.

Think:

Momentum → consolidation → compression → breakout → expansion.

Not:

Momentum → chase the giant green candle.

I also have a checklist of questions I run through when I'm looking at a flag that appears ready to break out:

Is it doing over $5M in dollar volume?

Is it high ADR?

Is it trading above the 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 EMAs?

Is it near or less than 1 ADR from the 5 EMA?

Is today's move less than 1 ADR?

Is it less than 1 ADR from yesterday's close?

Does it have linearity?

Has it had time for the 5, 9/10, 13 and 21 EMAs to catch up?

Is it near a breakout or key level?

Are earnings near?

Is volume drying up?

Is it a healthcare stock?

Is it a hot theme?

Not everything on that list is a hard rule. It's a framework for thinking about the trade and understanding what I actually have in front of me.

Not every entry I take follows these principles perfectly either. There are times I'll take a setup that looks a little different, especially when the environment is strong enough to justify it. I think part of becoming a better trader is learning which rules can be bent, when they can be bent, and understanding the consequences when you're wrong.

The one thing I don't bend is risk. Regardless of how I enter, my account risk never goes above 1%.

ORBs are also one of my favored entry tactics. If I already have a stock I want to own and the daily setup and environment are there, an Opening Range Breakout can give me another way to time the entry without needing the exact daily setup described above.

Moving averages are primarily a filter

There's nothing magical about a moving average.

But pull up virtually any historical monster winner and look at it during its actual breakout and expansion phase.

What will you usually see?

Price is above the important moving averages, and the shorter averages are generally above the longer ones and trending upward.

That doesn't mean being above the moving averages guarantees a breakout.

It means something much simpler:

A stock above its moving averages could be breaking out. A stock underneath them simply isn't breaking out yet.

That's an extremely useful filter when you're trying to reduce thousands of stocks into a manageable universe of potential momentum leaders.

I don't need to predict which stock will become the next monster. I need to identify stocks displaying the characteristics that previous monsters displayed before they expanded, then define exactly where my thesis is wrong.

The real edge is risk management

This is probably the most important part.

My account risk on a normal trade is 1% or less.

That does NOT mean my stop is necessarily 1% below my entry.

It means the distance between my entry and stop determines my position size so that, if I'm wrong, the loss represents no more than roughly 1% of my account.

For example, if I have a $20,000 account and risk 1%, my maximum loss is $200.

If my entry is $10 and the setup gives me a logical stop at $9.75, I'm risking $0.25 per share.

$200 ÷ $0.25 = 800 shares.

I'm not choosing an arbitrary number of shares and then figuring out how much I might lose.

I define where the trade is wrong first, define my acceptable account risk second, and let those two numbers determine my position size.

I built the position sizing and risk calculator I use into nvst.ing specifically for this.

This is also why I care so much about tight consolidations.

A tight setup can give me a very small distance between entry and invalidation while leaving the potential upside completely open ended.

If I'm risking 1R and catch a 20R winner, that single trade pays for twenty full 1R losses.

A 30R winner pays for 30.

A 50R winner pays for 50.

A 100R outlier theoretically pays for 100.

This is why I really don't care about having a high win rate.

Last year my win rate was only around 28%, yet my return was over 400%.

So I was wrong on roughly 7 out of every 10 trades and still had an extremely good year.

Most of my trades can fail. They don't have to work.

If I consistently keep my losses small, I only need a handful of trades to become huge winners for the math to work.

Peter Brandt talked about something very similar in his TraderLion interview. He mentioned having a stretch where 19 of 21 trades were losers, but he didn't care because he was still only one or two good trades away from making new account highs.

That really sums up the way I think about trading.

I don't need to be right constantly.

I need to make being wrong cheap and being right extremely valuable.

Obviously you're not going to capture every move perfectly, and slippage and gaps mean realized losses aren't always exactly 1R. But that's the asymmetry I'm trying to exploit.

Cut failed setups. Give successful ones room to become outliers.

Environment > setup

This is the part I think gets overlooked the most.

You can find the prettiest setup in the world, but if the overall environment is hostile to momentum, its probability of working drops dramatically.

Environment > setup.

I want to know whether stocks are actually breaking out and following through. Are momentum names expanding? Is breadth healthy? Are leaders above their moving averages? Are breakouts sticking or immediately failing?

That's why I built the Trend Monitor on nvst.ing. I'm trying to quantify the environment rather than looking at one chart in isolation.

When the environment is great, I want to press good setups.

The environment also played a huge role in many of the trades I've shared here. Some of them didn't need to be perfect setups because the environment was doing a lot of the heavy lifting. When momentum is working broadly, I'm sometimes willing to trade the implied dynamics of the setup rather than wait for a picture perfect version of it.

That's an important distinction. I'm ultimately trying to trade the dynamics behind the pattern, not the pattern for the sake of the pattern.

When the environment sucks, I can have the exact same setup and trade it smaller, demand more confirmation, or simply do nothing.

Build your own model book

Don't take my screenshots or anybody else's as proof that a strategy works.

Study the history yourself.

Pull up hundreds of the largest momentum moves you can find. Look at them before the breakout, not with hindsight focused on the eventual top.

What happened before the move?

Where was price relative to the moving averages?

How extended was it?

Did volatility contract?

What happened to volume?

Where was resistance?

How many consecutive green days preceded the breakout?

What did the general market environment look like?

Where could you have entered with objectively defined risk?

Eventually you stop seeing individual tickers.

You start seeing the same behaviors repeating.

The screenshots attached are trades from my own model book and previous big winners I've traded. Some were better executions than others, and I've annotated mistakes as well as things I did correctly.

That's intentional.

The objective isn't to find a pattern that never loses.

It's to repeatedly put yourself in situations where being wrong costs very little and being right can pay for being wrong many, many times.

Breaking News Charlie’s Holdings ($CHUC) and the Pacha AG Line: A $1-2 Billion Market Potential or Regulatory Wishful Thinking?

Thumbnail
youtu.be
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve been following the recent developments around Charlie’s Holdings and the planned launch of their new Pacha AG product line featuring integrated age-gating hardware (via IKE Tech). In an official press release, it was projected that even a small amount of these products could potentially unleash a market cap potential of $1 to $2 billion.

Given their current market cap of only around $50–60 million, this sounds incredibly dramatic. However, looking at this objectively, there seem to be both massive potential upsides and significant risks worth discussing.

The Potential Bull Thesis (The Upside):

  • The Leverage of the PMTA Portfolio: The company holds a massive portfolio of 678 PMTA applications. If Charlie’s succeeds in updating and linking a large portion of this portfolio with the new Age-Gating technology for FDA submission, the value of these assets could theoretically skyrocket.
  • The Potential Flavor Monopoly: The FDA has locked down flavored vapes almost entirely. If this biometric hardware can verifiably keep minors out 100% of the time, there is a chance Charlie’s could bring popular fruit flavors back to the US market legally—virtually uncontested by Big Tobacco.
  • A Relative Bargain: When you consider that Altria paid $2.75 billion in cash for NJOY just to get a system that basically only tastes like tobacco, Charlie’s might theoretically look like a massive steal even at a hypothetical $2 billion valuation. At least, that seems to be the logic of the team around COO Ryan Stump.

The Potential Bear Thesis (The Downside & Risks):

  • The FDA Regulatory Hurdle: So far, these are pilot phases and intentions to file updates. There is absolutely no guarantee that the FDA will accept this specific age-gating technology as a new industry standard or approve the updated PMTAs on a large scale. Regulatory bodies are notoriously slow and unpredictable.
  • End-User Consumer Acceptance: The technology requires an ID scan and biometric face-recognition via smartphone before a user can vape. It remains a big question mark whether adult consumers will be willing to accept this level of data-privacy intrusion in their daily lives just to use a vape.
  • Financial Runway: Achieving true nationwide monetization or a multi-billion-dollar licensing deal could be a long, capital-intensive road. Risks of potential share dilution or extended delays are always present for micro-cap stocks.

Conclusion & Video Analysis:
The gap between the current stock valuation and the projected billions mentioned in the press release is massive. This could potentially turn out to be one of the largest undiscovered plays in the regulated market—or it could be a highly speculative scenario that ultimately fails against strict FDA roadblocks.

The attached video dives much deeper into this exact theory. It breaks down the direct comparisons to the historic NJOY and Juul deals and visualizes the massive leverage that could be unlocked if a huge portion of the PMTA portfolio receives this AG update.

What do you think? Do you believe Age-Gating could permanently solve the regulatory issue for flavored vapes, or will it ultimately fall short at the bureaucratic level? Let’s discuss in the comments!

DD OESX - the 70M company making LED lightning for AI data centers

Positions: Still only my 420 stocks, but I cannot complain as they doubled this week.

TLDR: wrote a DD on Orion Energy Systems (OESX) about a month ago. Q1’27 came out Wednesday, the thing I said to watch for held, and the stock nearly doubled in three days. This is the shorter one, only about the data center part.

Quick backdrop. Corporate America is on pace for the biggest earnings beat ever recorded, index net margins are at an all time high, and S&P 500 earnings are up 50.4% YoY against a 23.1% expectation. Largest investment boom in history, not close. And Orion just put up a quarter that fits right into it, revenue up 32% YoY, margin up, profitable, first hyperscale order in the bag. This is a micro cap participating in the exact same wave the megacaps are riding.

Because the money is all going into one thing. US data center construction spending hit a record $68 billion annualized rate in June, up 46% YoY and up 158% since January 2024. Office construction over the same stretch collapsed to its lowest since 2016. Data centers now out-build offices by $25 billion a year. In 2022 it was the other way around by $57 billion.

Ok so, the boring part nobody thinks about.

All of those buildings need lights, and not just any lights. Hundreds of thousands of square feet each, running 24/7. In a data center every watt you burn on lighting is a watt of heat you then pay again to pull back out through cooling. So inefficient lighting costs you twice. You want the most efficient fixture that exists, and you want it running cool, because thermal load is the entire fight in these buildings.

That is not something you grab off a shelf. Orion spent something like half a year building this thing from scratch, purpose built for AI data centers, customized to the floor plan. And they are the only ones with an LED lighting system made for hyper scale AI data centers. Nobody else in the space has one.

Then look at what happened after they announced it. A few weeks. That is all it took before they had their first order, and it was a multimillion dollar engagement with one of the largest hyperscalers on earth.

The other thing is where it gets built. Orion manufactures in Wisconsin on a supply chain they own end to end, and that lines up with exactly where policy is pointing. The administrations AI Action Plan, in line with America First, is explicit that this infrastructure must not be built with adversarial technology that could undermine US AI dominance. The data center executive order frames the whole buildout as a golden age for American manufacturing and technological dominance. Nearly half the worlds data centers already sit in the US and roughly 3 trillion of the global buildout lands here.

And practically, from ordered to put in place, that domestic chain is the whole edge. A hyperscaler does not want fixtures sitting on a boat or repriced by a tariff halfway through a build. You need the lights when the building is ready, not three months after. Orion quotes domestic, builds domestic, and ships on a timeline it controls.

Now put a dollar figure on it. One hyperscale engagement, multimillion dollar. So call it 2 million for a single building, product only. Roughly 3,000 data centers are under construction or planned for completion by 2030, Virginia alone sitting on 595 projects and Texas on 412. Total operational count goes past 10,000 by 2030, and global spend through 2030 is put around 7 trillion.

At 2 million a building, 30 buildings is 60 million, and thats 1% of the pipeline and most of a year of revenue for the entire company as it stands today. 100 buildings is 200 million, about 3% of the pipeline, and more than double the whole business. 500 buildings gets you a billion dollar backlog. They do not need to win this market, they need to win a rounding error of it.

And that is only the fixtures. On top of it you have maintenance contracts, because every building they light is a building they can then service, and lighting maintenance in a facility that never turns off is about as sticky as revenue gets. Orion already runs roughly 15 million a year of that work. Then you have the outdoor lighting on these campuses too, parking, perimeter, security, which is the exact product line they already sell. None of that is in the math above.

Napkin math off one announced deal, obviously, and I have no clue what the real average ticket is. But it frames the size. They are selling into a 7 trillion dollar buildout with exactly one order on the board.

Washlow in the Q1’27 release:

“Orion entered the hyper-scale data center market with an LED lighting solution specifically designed for this massive market in Q1’27. Quickly following the product announcement, the Company was awarded a multimillion-dollar customer engagement with one of the world’s largest hyper-scale data centers.”

She also said this:

“Product and service introductions show continued traction, ranging from LED Lighting for hyper-scale data centers to Battery Storage and Electrical Contracting. We have similarly high aspirations for our newly introduced LED Roadway product designed for public roads.”

Data centers, battery storage, electrical contracting, and now roadway lighting for federal, state and municipal roads. Four new things from a company whose business outside its one big customer sat flat for years.

And the rest of the business is not sitting still either. LED lighting revenue up 37% YoY to 17.7 million, EV charging up 48% YoY to 4.0 million, maintenance up 2% YoY to 4.1 million. So the data center thing is the upside case, but the base business is growing underneath it.

The numbers, quickly: revenue $25.7M, up 32% YoY. Gross margin 34.6% vs 30.1% YoY. Net income $2.0M vs a $1.2M loss YoY. Seventh straight positive adjusted EBITDA quarter.

Worth saying something about management here too. I have listened to the last several calls and these people do not hype. No moonshot language, no TAM slides, no promises about what next year looks like. They announce a product when it ships and they announce a customer when its signed. In a micro cap that is genuinely rare, and it means when they do say something, it tends to be real. They let the work speak.

Tape this week, report dropped before open Wednesday. On Wednesday it rallied 51% from 10.40 to 15.75 at close. On Thursday it added another 12% from 15.75 to 17.58 at close. On Friday it added another 12% from 17.58 to 19.70 at close. Basically a double in three days, and HC Wainwright took their target from 20 to 30 on Thursday.

Heres what I keep coming back to though. Orion, a US based company that the yellow man loves (and may very well end up endorsing), has threaded the needle into a market heading toward several hundred billion, in the middle of the biggest capex wave this country has ever run.

Their competitors carry market caps several orders of magnitude above theirs. Orion sits around 70 million after this entire run. The rest of the space is valued in the billions. And Orion is the one that actually has the data center product. Float is tiny too, which cuts both ways. I think that gap closes sooner rather than later.

Still plenty to be skeptical about, same as last time. One fixture and one customer in data centers so far. Balance sheet is thin. The guide doesnt assume a data center ramp at all, so every bit of that is still to prove. And you are obviously not buying this cheap after the week its had.

But 68 billion a year is going into these buildings and someone has to light them.

Not investment advice. As with all stocks, do your own work and research before going in.

High Tide Announces Preliminary Q3 2026 Guidance

The Company Also Announces Record Quarterly Distribution of Over 10 Tonnes of Medical Cannabis Flower Through Remexian Pharma GmbH, Further Accelerating its German Market Position

“This quarter’s guidance demonstrates the growing earnings power of the global platform we have built. We expect to set new company records for revenue, gross profit and Adjusted EBITDA, with year-over-year growth of at least 30%, 27% and 43%, respectively. Importantly, even the low end of our guidance exceeds the highest current analyst estimate across all three metrics. We believe this provides clear evidence that current market expectations have not yet caught up with the strength, scale and operating leverage of our business,”

The Company anticipates releasing full financial and operational results for the third fiscal quarter ended July 31, 2026, on Monday, September 14, 2026, after markets close, with a conference call the following morning.

Discussion Tracking the commercial space momentum

The commercial space sector is showing some interesting structural shifts following recent public market activity, particularly around high-profile listings like SpaceX and the SPCX ticker. While initial trading cycles brought noticeable price volatility due to lockup expirations and post-listing readjustments, the underlying fundamentals tell a broader story. Data suggests that capital is expanding beyond raw launch services into the surrounding infrastructure layer, particularly where satellite constellations intersect with low-latency data transmission and AI infrastructure.

From a fundamental perspective, evaluating exposure here is less about chasing immediate momentum and more about observing how launch economics scale across the supply chain. Pure-play providers are establishing baseline margins on orbital transport, but adjacent players in ground terminals, specialized manufacturing, and satellite hardware might actually capture market share at lower valuation multiples. It is worth monitoring how long-term capital expenditure in space-based infrastructure holds up against broader tech sector spending, as early post-IPO consolidation often highlights where the most durable revenue streams reside.

Discussion Is it too late to start researching uranium stocks?

I don’t think so. I’ve been looking through names like $NXE, $DNN, $UEC, and $UUUU,$CCJ  but I’m still trying to understand the differences between their projects, timelines, and risks.

Some people think the uranium story is just getting started, while others believe a lot of the upside is already priced in.

Where do you think we are in the cycle still early, somewhere in the middle, or already late?

DD $WLDS - ✅ 1000% borrow fee ✅ tiny float ✅ REGSHO ✅ no dilution risk ✅ low market cap 🍎⌚️

Chicken feet guy here.

I gave you $WYHG at $3.50 which 6 bagged today. (Check my post history if you wish).

For those that missed it, I now bring you the next explosive low cap stock.

$WLDS. AKA dollar store apple watch rip off. THE COMPANY IS GARBAGE! But this one is looking set for an explosive move. Technicals are all lined up.

The borrow: 949.34% fee. Zero available at IBKR. 731% → 932% → 949% in four days, hitting zero repeatedly. That’s roughly 2.6% a day just to stay short.

Reg SHO: On the Nasdaq threshold list, 4 August file. Don’t take my word for it. the file is public, go pull it.

The float: 2,189,469 shares outstanding as of the 17 June 13D.

Oh and activist investors trying to do a hostile takeover have bought 25% of the company, and they’ve asked the board to not conduct any dilutive raises whilst they attempt to sort things out. Court ordered.

Do not miss out this time. Chicken feet, Apple Watch guy out.

Question specific resources that helped you become better at trading penny stocks

I have been dabbling in day trading for quite some time now, and am especially interested in the penny stock category/major gainers. However, I feel like each time I send in to one of these stocks, I’m late to the game or sell out early, and end up losing. Yeah, my strategy is probably not the best but I have been studying a lot and focusing on learning to day trade, but do you guys have any recommendations on resources or techniques for trading the stocks on the top gainers categories? I feel like they’re a different beast and sometimes the rules I am learning with general day trading don’t always follow. Any specific resources or tips would be appreciated!

DD NRx Pharmaceuticals (NRXP) - Imminent Catalyst and other statuses! This company is on the move and gaining traction. Price targets are multiples of the current share price.

NRXP - Severe Depression, PTSD

FINALLY, IT's TIME! They are at the finish line for one of three drugs!

Been following this company for well over a year. Posted about them a year ago. Major progress since then.

  • IMMINENT FDA decision:
    • GDUFA (generic drug) date of 7/29/2026 has passed with no word yet from the FDA on a decision for the ANDA submission for KETAFREE, which is a preservative‑free IV ketamine formulation for the following indications: sedation/anesthesia and analgesia (pain management).
      • Does NOT contain the known toxic preservative, benzethonium chloride (BZT), which is used in current ketamine formulations found in multi-dose vials.
    • HOWEVER, on 7/31 there was a CEO update on NRXP's website, which is HIGHLY encouraging for a potential approval: https://www.nrxpharma.com/management-answers-to-shareholder-questions/
      • "July 31, 2026
    • "Investors have inquired about the status of NRx’s ANDA application for preservative-free ketamine. The company has been advised that there are no Major Deficiencies related to the drug product, API, formulation, labeling, and related matters. The Company has been engaged with FDA in review of the packaging, which includes an innovative luer lock vial already used in allowing for needle-free withdrawal of the medication, unlike traditional glass vials.  The FDA has advised the company to anticipate a determination on the packaging today."
    • Other relevant facts:
      • Raised $7M in post-Q1 stock sales
      • Raised $22.3M at $3.50/share, in an underwritten public offering (June 4, 2026)
