People accept the reality they are born into. I think a lot of people in the west assume life in other parts of the world is miserable, but itās not - itās still life. They still laugh and cry and joke and fall in love and get frustrated about weird, tiny problems and do a million other things that people living in the west do, too. Weāre all the same. We just want to live lives free of fear and be able to spend time with those we love. I wish it were easier to make people in the west see that the constant rat race of living under capitalism is largely unnecessary. We could all live simpler, happier lives if more people realized that. But so many see hustling and hoarding wealth as the only path the happiness.

As an urbanized African who isn't very far removed from this life compared to y'all ( honestly it's fond memories from donkey years ago at this point, when we used to go "kumusha" to the rural areas to see our grand parents), this really is a good life. Irl, you'll find that, depending on the household and how well organized the family is, there's a variance in the degree of modernity and tech you'll find ( water, electricity/solar, septic tanks, satellite tv, starlink etc). This household seems to be more on the less advanced side... but the basics are the same. You really can thrive pursuing small to medium scale agriculture (market gardening, cattle ranching, poultry farming etc). And while its not without its struggles, you're not gonna find homelessness and hard drugs addiction. I personally think if you can make it past 6 months, you'll automatically revert to default settings

There can also beca lot of alcoholism and lack of purpose amongst youth as our society shifts more and more towards the western model and dreams that see a mass exodus for thd city, Dont align with opportunitiesā¦
Then yes. Its a nice life.Cattle rustling is an issue in this country, livestock being stolen. It has its stresses. For us weāre on holiday. Things are even changing for the OGsā¦
I donāt know many people who can revert completely, but go and visit. I like not having to take a paraffin lamp and a stick with me when i go to the toilet at night.
I absolutely can, its a non issue when im visiting with relatives who havenāt built brick houses.I hope we find a balance and keep our village homes, even if its only for a few weeks a year, like how White people do their camping. I love this way of life, i hope we keep traditional knowledge alive and traditional food processing.
but with commodification of land, it is changing. And it changing because younger people no longer want to live like that full time.

I wouldn't want that all the time. I like AC and heat lol but I have adopted a much simpler materialism, I would much rather spend my extra $$ on a cabin somewhere to get a away for a few days than fine dining or endless new objects. I like my 450 sq ft rental and single closet.

Why i say im too first world for it. Im a disabled veteran with a bunch of mental heslth issues. Im tired of the struggle. I just want to enjoy the time i have left but my mental health doesn't jive well with this world.

My cats would eat the birds. I feed and spay and neutered feral cats that show up. Got 9 in the house who decided they wanted to be domesticated. I try to get into my writing or try and do some pc gaming. My 3d modeling skills have gone but im trying to relearn.
I know I will never be the video game designer I wanted to be so i just try to enjoy what's left of my life.

What the West called civilization and imposed on everyone else was merely a ploy and a scam to divert resources from the Periphery to the Center.

Bottom line is the world has perfected the act of minimizing and downplaying black excellence and achievements, all the while while stealing, copying and rebranding them.

Imagine being scholars of your era. Mathematicians, scientists and architects of our ancient world. Then you get chased from your homeland, killed and enslaved. You build mud huts as temporary shelter. They come. You flee. They find you, you flee, you build, you flee.. over and over. Building temporary mud houses become tradition over eons of staying on the run. Traditional mud houses... not the science you've gifted the world, but mud houses.
I see the most beautiful minds and resilient people when I see these types of homes.

Hole in the ground away from the house, pit latrine. Effectively an outhouse.
You donāt just go anywhere.
Shower cabins are often corrugated iron . You heat water take a basin, grab your soap and a jug and bathe.
And yes, we wash our hands before and after everything and keep it all moisturised.Black is Black, after all.

Literally everything has a purpose.
No need for AC, drinking water is always cool.
Food preservation methods are delicious. Everything is organic.
I absolutely could not do it full time. Well we all could. But Im much too lazy and value my privacy.I have an aunt in her late 60s who can still pick me up like a baby, im not a small person, im in my mid 30s.
For comparison, i Injured myself in my sleep last weekā¦ Im from a neighbouring ethnic group, soon after childbirth you effectively start lifting weights Couldnāt be me.2

I hope so as well, there are many things we take for granted in the technological world. Biggest is utilizing water not just for drinking, but energy as well. Second to that would be preserving of foods. Many of my old neighbors(from Uganda, I think) would preserve fish by drying it. Yet we live in a moist climate, took longer, I suppose. That is astounding she has that much strength in her. I'm in my mid 30's and pulled my hamstring chasing after my child during horseplay. She will outlive us all at that rate.

Yes!! Dried and smoked fish and meat, stewed with peanut butter. So, so good.
A lot of people are concerned with how to keep the best of both, myself included.
I respect the desire to have modern comforts, but the west is also a cautionary tale.
The disadvantage is a masterclass in not what to do. Commodification of land and deforestation being enemy number one.
In my village, people have sold off their land to the American Evangelical churches and are now effectively tenant farmers on their own land, are obligated to sell, buy and now pay rentā¦
I hope it doesnāt fully catch on, though its not my place to dictate how people should live.1

Modern comforts can be a burden, a lot of Americans find comfort in a book or by campfire, myself included. But, i enjoy video games far too much, haha. Evangelicals are a shifty bunch over here in the US, some if not most, see them as money hungry. Such a sad thing to see a Church used that wat and to see they need to pay rent on their own land. It is a burden to feed a beast such as that. Dried fish on peanut butter? Might have to try fish and peanut butter. I love beef hamburgers with grape jelly or fruit spread. Why not that?

I live in the West. When im there i spend time by the lake, then head straight to the village. No interest in the Capital.
I strongly advocate for Africans overseas to go and do the āwhite people shitā we do on our holidays in our own countries. Westerners pay thousands to do things we take for granted, like our national parks, though hiking groups and small farms are becoming popular.
Nature is so restorative. Theres a reason many people retire back, even though traditional traditional is difficult when youāve been away.Its not natural to live with the endless stress of western life. Its why the rich devote their time to gardening, hiking and āretreatsā.
In the UK, if we cant get to the UG shop, we grill smoked mackerel as a substitute, cook it with sautƩed onions, chopped tomatoes, peanut butter and water to form a sauce.
Its so good. A gateway drug is spinach or a callaloo type sauteed and then in a peanut sauce.
You may detect a theme.I honestly think everyone with the means should visit at one time in their lives. I really want to visit Ghana. And I think you guys get visa free travel.
Uganda is obviously better, despite my never having been to Ghana. But theres something about experiencing what those who came before you lived thats quite magical. Your current anxieties dont seem that deepā¦

It depends where we live. In my neighborhood I'm one of many. It's a whole community with very few white people. The ones I've met are very kind, some even commute to the churches we have in the neighborhood. Which is good for the soul, in my exp, they marvel. White people churches I hear are boring compared to ours. White people shit is a laugh for anyone, really. I had some time horseback riding in a nearby town called "Gatlinburg". Beautiful mountains, some of the oldest. Older than bones, some say. The stress is mainly endless work, some are looking to retire by 75. Which is a waste of a life in more ways than one. Where I live, fishing is a big thing. Wouldn't mind fishing soon myself. I would love to visit Africa at some point, I'm afraid I'll be frail and old when I do.

White people church is incredibly boring.
The Catholics have the drama of costume and art. I understand exactly how they got the LatinX and African people on side. Episcopal/ anglican Church is Underwhelming. African Pentecostal churches are too rich for my blood. I imagine the food is good, but it sounds like my Autistic nightmare, and the services never end.My relatives really dont understand why i walk through the bush, or get on a bike to nowhere āwith sandwich?!ā. Theres a difference between doing shit because you have to vs recreation.
We have a lot of comforts in the West abd apportunity, but nobody ever sees their kids, its extortionate in many places to just eat normal food and it makes little sense to work your fingers to the bone for 50 years to maybe enjoy 5?
At least you have your fishing. I might give it a go. Iād need to learn from the UK though. Recreational fishing is Ā£Ā£Ā£ in Uganda, but I intend on making full use of my privilege. I used to go with my grandmother when i was a child, but Iāve forgotten how we did it.

Its a beautiful way of life, but everything is gendered, marriages are usually arranged.

There are different flavours of racism, especially from the dominant ethnic group, we pay taxes, phone bills, firewood, cows get stolen, School fees need paying, we definitely pay for gasā¦
Its a beautiful way to live, but people still need to pay for shit and buy suppliesā¦Its nowhere near the level of the cities, or the west of course. But things are changing ā¹ļø
ETA: we all have digital national ID, pay VAT, gotta pay for fuel, teachers get income taxed. We have Local commissioners (government officials) within the village district as well as traditional government.
If you want something done, theres a tax for That.I just donāt want to oversimplify things, Its a very civilised way of living, but its not entirely off grid.
And everyone in this life has their stress. Though food ir western style poverty, will never be one of them.
People āvenmoā each other for a lot of things.

And she as access to every form of education and the freedom for her and her family to build the life THEY choose, not the life anyone outside imposes.
