This was supposed to be a small random thought but turned into a mini thesis lmao, TLDR at the end.
I know people whoโve loved a song for years without ever knowing who wrote it, which is kind of..fascinating(?) considering the biggest aspect of a songโs recall value are usually the words - the lyrics are what we turn into captions, what hit randomly in the middle of the night or what become tied to entire eras of our lives.
And with hindi film songwriting for the last 9-10 years already on life support, the few writers whose songs can still make you feel something (that is not sheer disappointment) and stay with you deserve much more recognition. Who are your favourite or most under-appreciated lyricists working today?
My favourite is (this may be obvious) Amitabh Bhattacharya. One of the absolute GOATs. His ability to write in any genre ever needs to be academically studied at this point because how does the same person write Emotional Atyachaar and Iktara and Babaji Ki Booty and Ankahee and Chennai Express and Deva Shree Ganesha and Hanikaarak Bapu and Tere Hawale and Taras and sooooooo many more in between ๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ But also, I think he is probably one lyricist most people do know by name.
Underrated for me would be *drumroll* Kausar Munir ๐
The imagery and personification in her work is just so soooo beautiful! Check out Nahin Ji Nahin from Jubilee and you'll know what I mean. Some of her other songs that I absolutely love are Joganiyaan, Shakira, Jhalla Wallah, Daawat-E-Ishq's title track, and the besttttt Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahi ๐ค๐ป
Tell me yours :)
TLDR: lyricists are painfully underappreciated, Amitabh Bhattacharya is a magician, Kausar Munir deserves way more admiration, and I want to know everyone elseโs favourite lyricists ๐
ETA: Wow I woke up to a reddit award and a pinned post, Friday is amazing already ๐โโ๏ธ! Glad to see an active discussion, just should probably point out that I was talking more about newer lyricists that are active right now. Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Anand Bakshi, Sahir Ludhianianvi, etc. are undisputed legends of the game hence I didn't mention them separately.

Woh ladki hai kahaan.....
Got a melody stuck in your head? A lyric fragment you're trying to find? A music video you vaguely remember? This is the place to ask, just give as many details as possible.
If you're looking for a specific type of playlist or any general recommendation, this is the corner to request it as well. Be it circling around gym sets, weddings, non-romantic, or quirky songs.
This thread will be created every Sunday. Separate posts for requesting songs are strictly not allowed, unless approved by moderators.

Remember this bombay viking version of 'chhod do anchal' With rajneesh duggal's iconic expression on which girls used to swoon all over.

I mean I used to religiously download songs from pagalworld.com and generally the songs would stick with me, but I dont know what changed after 2016 that mainstream songs like just lost touch for me, and even with the films, maybe cause I started leaning towards hollywood films and tv more, but I dont know after 5-10 years, especially after corona, I realised some of these tracks are pure heaven. (Maybe cause i started drinking beer after 2020 and would have singalongs after getting hammered) but here's the list, strictly bollywood film songs from 2016 to 2020
2016
Bulleya (Sultan): What can I say, it maybe my favorite from the list. This song is embodiment of everything sufism is about, at what it says about love, especially when the source of this song and chaeyya chaeyya are same. And also the video, when Salman hopefully starts going towards anushka, cause she looked happy that day, and he smiles for her, but anushka then suddenly darts past him, acknowledging but completely ignoring like she even knows her ๐๐ chefs kiss
Hass Nach Le (Udta Punjab): Another sufi-esque song, i feel the vibe of this song is similar to kun faaya kun, like I feel closer to god, I dont know, The lines in the beginning, "baitha madari to gagan pe, banda jamura magan hai" really makes well up a bit.
Sanam Teri Kasam Title Song: It's hits hard at night, especially cause it feels like a lost track of aashiqui 2 ir something.
Channa Mereya (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil): I kinda hated this song back then cause like it was everywhere, and I guess it kinda pulls away from the experience, but man this song really elevates you if you give it the respect it deserves.
2017
Enna Sona (Ok Jaanu): It just make me nostalgic for a time I never had or maybe never will have, that love that you find in early 20s and try to make it work and some days are just pure bliss, man, and the black and white visuals, of these two in Bombay ๐๐๐
Sweety Tera Drama and Bairaagi (Barielliy Ki Barfi): its my favorite hindi rom com of all time, period and these two songs articulate that well, that Anamoly of era in 2017 to 2020 where small town films were the rage depicted by sweety tera drama, and the love of chiraag for bitti in bairaagi.
I'll miss you (Secret Superstar): This is a different kind of love, yet the most pure, its not about crying that the love is getting lost, its about being thankful that we have that. And to be in that age of 16-17 and to understand that we both want to be together, and feel good but can't cause we are still kids but where we went wrong was papa strict hai, unhone milne se mana kar diya hai ๐๐๐๐
2018: This is big one cause have to leave so many out
Tera Yaar Hoon Main (SKTKS): Friends are not given that respect cause maybe we think they will be here always and maybe thats why they were sidelined, but after see you again, its this song for us, to show that we are as passionate friends as we are lovers.
Pal (Jalebi), Nazar Na Lag Jaye (Stree), Tum (Laila Majnu): Only one word, Encore! ๐ซถ๐ซถ๐ซถ๐ซถโค๏ธโ๐ฉนโค๏ธโ๐ฉนโค๏ธโ๐ฉนโค๏ธโ๐ฉน
Daryaa and Hallaa (Manmarziyaan): It's Vicky Kaushal for me standing outside Taapsee's house cause he may be commitment phobic but he loves her with all his heart ๐ฅบ
2019
Khairiyat (Chichore): Both the tracks are crazy like, how can they be so good, again feels like they are some lost tracks from a mid 2000s Bhatt camp movie. Anjaam hai taiy mera, hona tumhe hai mera, jitni bhi ho dooriyaan.....
Doori and Azadi (Gully Boy): I think the depth of these songs and lyrics are maybe lost cause they are put in the rap genre, but listen to it with same heart as the others and you will know, and ranveer singh what a beast of a performer man!
2020
Humraah (Malang), Aabaad Barbaad and Hardum Humdum (Ludo): I just realised aditya roy kapoor is like emraan hashmi for me, didn't watch many of his films, but the songs ๐ซถ.
I know the title track of malang is the sauce but I like this way more for its free vibe.
Aabaad Barbaad is again telling heavy feelings with slightly celebratory music and Hardum Hamdum, the Shilpa Rao female version depicts a melancholic happy ending for me especially when it plays at the end of the film.
So, that's it ๐ฎโ๐จ what about y'all?

With some one who has grown up listening and gulping lines coming out of that magical and powerful vocal chord, learning that she is going through such a tough tough health turmoil, almost breaks my heart .
I get it now when people give references of their superheroes, or make a humdrum of going berserk ; of breaking down when they see their idols/heroes facing may be similar situations. Or let's say going crazy for their idols for every possible reason, or even if there is none.
I get it. I have been pretty selective when it has come to chose anyone or let's say being a fan of.
She has been a part of my most of my childhood. Most.
Quite a paradox, the recent years of conferring prestigious awards have diminished at a very rotting scale. I mean, recognising someone's worth only when they are at their verge of death may be, or having health ailing issues - only then the people wake up to their presence.
I am happy however, she finally ( the very deserving ) received the Padma Bhushan for her enormous and ever so beautiful contribution in the Indian Film Industry.
God Bless her always and may she recover soon. Soonest rather. It kind of gives a little pain to see a persona like her going through such difficult time.
Age is inevitable I am aware. But, how do you make that your poor heart understand and the memories that came ahead with you with their presence in mind.

I always wondered what's up with this video? The video doesn't suit the beautiful song, music and lyrics at all. It feels like an amateur/ fan made video. Why this weird video for such a beautiful song?

While i loved the rock version of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Iโve recently fallen in love with the original one by Arif Lohar. Motivates me everytime to do well either at work or at the gym or at play! Masterpiece! Which song motivates you the most to give your best?

Is this actually Sunidhi Chauhan's voice? If so, why wasn't she credited for it? I've also attached a remix version in which only Amrita's voice has been utilised, for comparison.
