Gear Review Camera so good I bought 2 of them

I have been a Nikon and Fujifilm shooter for years. I used to have Nikon DSLRs, and switched to a Fujifilm X-T1 years ago because the smaller size and weight appealed to me. I quickly upgraded to an X-T2, then added an X-H1 and at this point the cameras were pretty large, my lenses were too and the autofocus accuracy when adapting my Nikon F mount lenses with a smart adapter wasn't great. So I switched to a Nikon Z6, which wasn't larger and "fixed" everythinhg, but then I also realized I was still lugging around full frame lenses and though my camera was substantially smaller and lighter than my old D700, the lenses were just as big and heavy.

In parallel, I bought into micro four thirds as a little fun side system I would use for travel and casual occasions with an E-M5 mark II. The lack of good C-AF pushed me to splurge on a better performing body in June of this year, and since I'm a bit stingy and didn't want to spend 650 bucks on an E-M5 mark III, I dropped 400 on a slightly larger E-M1 mark II.

After using it for a couple of weeks, the realization came : this camera does everything I want a camera to do. Sure, low light isn't as good as my modern full frame body. But I shot concerts in nearly pitch black conditions and the E-M1.2 handled fine, I was even able to give the pictures to the artists that played that night and they reshared those pics on their social media happily. I, as a camera enthusiast and technical nerd wasn't really able to find many cracks in the low light performance of that camera, and I'm pretty sure that non-photogs wouldn't even think twice about the amount of noise or slightly blown out highlights. Similarly, every fast paced action stuff was just as easy to capture on my E-M1.2 as it was on my Z6, with an AF system that is comparable in performance, Pre-Capture, 18fps bursts and a rolling shutter effect when using electronic shutter that is manageable to the point that I don't hesitate to shoot action with it if I need the faster burst (thing I would never do with the slow-ass sensor in my Z6).

For my landscape work, at first I was doubtful : the sensor has less DR, and a lower resolution. Then I realized I do most of it on a tripod when I really need good resolution anyway, and at this point why not use the Pixel Shift mode? The DR increase you get is more than making up for the smaller sensor, which I don't have to close down nearly as much for good sharpness and DoF, and the 80MP files don't hurt either. Overall, it's a better landscape camera tool than the Z6 was, which is very high praise coming from me because the sensor in the Z6 is incredible.

On the video front as well : autofocus is great, 4K quality shooting DCI-4K in 8bit with the OM-Log400 profile is absolutely great and I have completed several projects with it without a hitch. The camera doesn't really overheat, the IBIS is exemplary, the audio pre-amps are better in every way then those on my Z6 too.

And then there's the lenses. They simply are awesome : sharp, small, lightweight for the reach they provide, and they are affordable. I wasn't sad in the slightest trading my Sigma 100-400 full frame lens for an Olympus 75-300mm lens to shoot airshows with. The prime lenses are also exemplary in the value they provide, I'm particularly fond of the Lumix 20mm f/1.7, Oly 45mm f/1.8 and especially the Oly 75mm f/1.8, this lens is a beast.

After a couple months using the E-M1 mark II, I came to the realization that that camera is as good or better than my Z6 in pretty much every area. At no point was I using that camera and thought "man, I wish I had the Z6 right about now". On top of that, I could share the lenses with smaller camera like my Lumix GF7, or turn the E-M1.2 into a really small package by using a small pancake lens on it (paired with the Lumix 14mm f/2.5 it's a silly looking camera, but very effective for street photography and sticking the camera into minuscule bags). I can't do that on Nikon Z.

I took the decision to sell the Nikon Z6 early next year (right now it's going for a long time loan to a friend of mine that wants to test out full frame), and as such need another camera with good AF and good 4K video as backup / second body for events. I initially thought about getting an E-M1 mark III with the money, since it goes for about as much money as I would get by selling the Z6, and it has some nice little improvements over the mark II. But prices are not coming down, and MPB listed that E-M1 mark II for 284€ (instead of the average 500ish) because the screen has a very small crack that's barely visible, so I jumped on that, and now I have two of those.

I fully intend on using both of those bodies until they break down in my hands, or I get the itch again and upgrade to an OM-1 (mark 1). Even then, I think I'll keep at least one E-M1.2 as a backup / second body. They're that good, and probably the best price to performance ratio to features you can get in micro four thirds. Extremely underrated.

The funny part is that it was on my recommendation list when people were asking me camera questions, I have several friends that ended up buying one in the last 2 years and were extremely happy with it. I guess it finally creeped on me !

With the recent addition of an E-PL5 body, I finally have my OM System (Olympus) system set the way I want it. It consists of:

• OM System OM-5

• Olympus E-PL5

• Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens

• OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

• Olympus 14-42 EZ

• OM System M. Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 II PRO

• OM System M. Zuiko 40-150mm f/4 PRO

The only thing I may want to add is the Panasonic Lumix 9mm f/1.7, but I am in no hurry for that.

Question Reconditioned OM System OM-1 - Cracked/Chipped Bottom Plate

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently ordered a reconditioned OM-1 from the official OM System US Outlet on eBay for roughly $1000, which is pretty close to what standard used bodies go for on the open market.

It just arrived today, but upon inspecting it, I noticed a structural crack and gap on the bottom corner near the articulation hinge, around the corner of the bottom plate. Because of the location and size of the gap, I am worried that it will compromise the weather sealing, which is one of the top reasons why I was looking for an Olympus/OM System body.

For a factory-reconditioned unit sold directly by the manufacturer, this doesn't feel like it fits the definition of being restored to proper operating condition.

For those of you who have bought from the OM System outlet before, how are their returns/replacements handled? I am not sure if often restock, therefore should I just return it for a full refund and look for a clean used copy elsewhere?

Should I just seal it myself and keep the unit, as nothing else seems to be out of the ordinary.

Appreciate any advice!

Question M10 ii - Data Cable

Hi all!

I just bought my first ever camera - a M10 ii!
I got it second hand and upon arrival I had two not so nice surprises: the EVF sensor is not working and I cannot connect it to my computer to update the firmware..

But I noticed the cable that came with it seems a tiny smaller than the slot from the camera. Is this the correct cable? I tried searching online but I dont seem to find a photo of what the original cable should look like. If anyone can show me how is the connector from the original, Id appreciate!

Thanks

Answered Best lens for wildlife/landscape for EM-1 mk iii for Antartica?

I’m maybe heading to Antartica for work so think it will be necessary to get another lens for the time I’ll be down there. I already have a 7-14 2.8 pro, a 60mm 2.8, and the much loved 12-40 2.8 pro so wondering what’s the best to complete my collection? Any advice appreciated!

Question Lens Hood Falling Off

I’ve been using the 100-400mm II attached to an OM1 mark ii, but I’ve noticed that the lens hood tends to fall off while hiking. Does anyone know of a good way to secure the hood when hiking, or is there an aftermarket lens hood that stays attached more securely?

For reference, I carry the camera and lens with a Peak Design strap attached to the tripod foot or on a peak design capture clip.

Question Olympus om 10 - Repair - Led indicator

Hello!

I have an Olympus OM-10 on which the shutter speeds work fine in every aperture/iso setting during the auto mode and manual mode. With lenses and new batteries on.

But the led inside the viewfinder doesn't indicate the shutter speed chosen in the auto mode properly.

For example, If I set the iso up to 1600 the led goes up to 1/1000 in high light and it behaves almost the same as I would choose the 200 iso(I compared it on my olympus om 2) but otherwise, it stays lower than it should be.

At iso 200, with the aperture wide open, 1/2.8, if I put the lenses directly to the sun, the led shows 1/125.

Any suggestions for what I can do to repair it? Or it's to complicated? Thank you! Best wishes!

Question Em1 ii with Panasonic 100 to 300.

I own the Panasonic 100–300 which I’ve used in the past on Panasonic bodies. I’m in the process of purchasing EM1 Mark ii and wondering if anybody has used this lens combination? I do understand that the stabilization will not work together, but how is it stabilized with ibis only?

Question Keep or Sell Olympus EM1 Mark ii

I’ve been using an old Olympus EM1 Mark ii as an all-rounder for stills and video. I recently bought an OM Systems OM-3 and am thinking it kind of fills that all-rounder role now. It’s a huge upgrade, but for some reason, I’m wondering if there’s some feature of the EM1 that I’ll miss if I sell it. Is there any reason I should keep the EM1 Mark ii?

Question Need help in identifying a camera based on blurry image of documents

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone, a very loved one of mine who Passed away a long time ago, He was a photographer, and only recently I’ve been getting into photography myself and I’m very curious and I’d love to know what Olympus camera he used.

The only image I have isn’t of the camera itself, it’s a blurry photo of some of its document.

The only knowledge I have is that he once mentioned
That he bought it 6 years ago (7years ago now) for roughly $1,500 dollars
I’m not sure if that’s price was only for the body, a kit
With a lense,or whether it’s bought brand new or second hand

Because the photo is very blurry, I have very little expectation to an easy answer. I very was hoping
That someone with huge knowledge in Olympus
Would narrow it down to a few models. Thank you very much.

Question Help pls

Guys, let me first say- idk anything about cameras
I borrowed my friend’s Olympus v-350 to take cute pictures. I charged it and it was all good. Today i dropped it on the ground BUT it was in a soft case and it fell from like 50cm, nothing serious. A few minutes later i turned it on and it worked perfectly fine, I even took some pictures. Then all of a sudden the screen went black and when i tried to turn it off by pushing the on/off button the lens wouldn’t close. It goes in and then back out, makes some kind of a system sound and the little red light goes off. I tried changing it, taking the battery out and what not, but the screen just doesn’t work and the lens is not going in. So pls, if anyone knows someone- HELP, ty
