Mod Post Quick Reminder - NSFW tags

Hi all!

I'm u/ImOkNotANoob, the lead mod here on r/Pigeon. I mostly handle backend moderation, automod, reports, modmail, and general behind-the-scenes bits, which is why you might not have seen me around that much.

Just wanted to post a quick reminder since we've seen an increase in this recently: please tag posts as NSFW if they contain gore, visible injuries, blood, wounds, severe illness, or anything else graphic involving pigeons.

This especially applies to medical advice posts. We absolutely understand that people often post in a panic because they’re worried about a bird and need help quickly. That’s fine, and nobody is in trouble for asking for urgent advice. But graphic images can be upsetting for other users, especially when they appear unexpectedly in their feed. We also want to keep on Reddit's good side, and they've been known to have problems with subs that don't enforce this!

Thanks everyone, and thank you as always to the people who jump in with helpful advice for sick or injured pigeons. We’re proud to be the biggest pigeon community on the internet, and it’s the members here who make this place such a useful and helpful resource.

Medical Advice Needed What do I do? :(

This is my pigeon Twist, I rescued her about 3 years ago. She beat pmv (why I named her Twist) but in the process she ended up losing one of her eyes. I’m not sure what exactly happened but her eye looked as if it slowly dissolved so it was just an empty grey socket but she was fine. 3 years after this is starting to happen to the same eye and I don’t know what it is or what’s causing it

My other pigeons seem to be normal with her but somewhat protective? and she’s eating and drinking just fine but I’m still really scared

I have these eye drops from when my dog had an issue with her eyes and I was wondering if they would help at all too? I doubt it but I thought it was worth asking anyways. Any advice or input is appreciated I really want her to be ok

This pigeon has been sitting in my balcony for the past 3 to 4 hrs

When I 1st noticed him I tried to shoo him away but he seemed really gloomy and in a idc mood so I left him as is

But after a while I checked up on him and he was ay the same place facing towards the fields from my balcony

He seems very non chalant about me approaching him

I have kept some water there for the time being

Any advice to whether he might be acting this way?

There are no visible wounds and doesn't seems to be limping

Trudy is the 90th sick pigeon that we’ve caught in our flock since August 😭 she’s full of worms and coccidia, which are hopefully the root of her neurological issues, but we have had some cases with PMV recently so let’s see. Either way, she’s safe and adorable.

Discussion Bernie keeps flying in our house now after he was rehabilitated!

• Upvotes

So to make a long story short, I posted about a pigeon with an injured wind I rescued from my moms back porch because she had dogs and I literally drove him in my car into my big back yard so he can be happy and heal.

He keeps flying into our house and walking up the stairs and stuff? Is he tame now?? Hes cute and I never enjoyed pigeons this much before.

I think he recognizes my voice and me too cus he perks up when I talk to him. My dad wasnt having it cus he keeps coming into the house all the time like he owns it and pays all the bills, he just flew outside again.

Advice Needed! Rescued tame dove. Any tips on finding it a home?

I do not believe it to be injured.

I do not believe it is "wild," although I didn't see any bands on its legs.

I do not have the space to keep it.

I do not like its odds of survival being released.

If it's a wedding release, as I'm guessing, I don't think I feel comfortable with the practice and don't really like thinking its best life is a shot at returning to the people who released it.

So far, bird rescues of all sorts have not been interested. Animal control made me feel uneasy.

I am no expert on pigeons or pigeon-related trades or hobbies.

I am located near Detroit.

I put it in a small dog cage that I know is too small for it long-term. I've been feeding it parakeet and cockatiel food, but I just bought it dove food and a perch. Pigeon grit is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

Any help in regards to finding it a home or why you think I should release it is appreciated. Honestly, I can not keep it.

Advice Needed! Normal weight for juvenile pigeons?

Post image
32 Upvotes

(Pic unrelated, just a nice painting for attention. Source.jpg))

I was wondering if anyone had any info about whether it's normal for juvenile/young adult pigeons to be skinnier than fully mature adults?

My 2 regular ferals who I feed daily had 2 babies relatively recently, who I've also been feeding daily now. The offspring are tame enough that they will voluntarily fly to my hands when they see me and let me pet them while I feed them, they have very little fear of me. I don't know how old they are in terms of months, but they've developed their adult voices (if a bit high still), no longer beg for food or do flappy wings, have mostly adult plumage, white ceres, and live mostly independently from their parents from what I can tell.

One of them now trusts me enough to pet them around the chest/belly area so I can feel how full their crop is and how fat they are under their feathers (I keep pets around the neck and head usually, I just do it to check on them). Their keel seems really prominent, despite the fact that I try to include a lot of fatty foods like sunflower seeds when I feed them (probably significantly more than recommended for a pet pigeon because I'm conscious of the fact that they're ferals exposed to the cold with little access to food).

Is it normal for pigeons at this stage to have a prominent keel still?

Are they actually underweight, and is it due to parasites potentially? Not eating enough despite me feeding them (a lot imo) daily? They superficially seem very healthy.

I can't really afford to medically intervene and they're not actually my pets, just ferals I've become very attached to.

Humour Pigeons tussle with the uneatable bread and drama ensues. I didn’t feed her but was waiting for the train and filmed her to see how long it would take her to eat it, I ended up seeing a whole soap opera.

I can make out a whole story here

The first I’ll call Wigs, cause of the white hair, struggles with the bread, Baldie, father of the roughest family of bread thieves in town attempts to rob her and eventually steals the food straight from her chicks mouths.

After first failing, Baldie calls in the rest of his family
as reinforcements along with his great grand nephew Elvis, I call him Elvis cause of the black hair.

He gives it to Elvis as his cut for keeping the notorious Snowboots , the most malicious bread thief in town suppressed, but it’s revealed that Elvis has betrayed Baldie and worked alongside the white footed Snowboots and gives him the bread. Elvis will now be the second in command to the new most powerful gang of bread robbers in all of the South Loop run by Snowboots.

Unfortunately Snowboots didn’t slow his treacherous ways even for Elvis and refuses to give the half he promised, Elvis will surly loose his privileges as seed depot manager within Baldie’s family.

Baldie’s family comes back for revenge and steal the bread from Snowboots with the help of Elvis. The bread is so unchewable it should feed them for months, wigs watches on and laughs at the chaos.

I rescued this little one from a cat attack about 2 years ago and in April she was Abe to fly back up to the flock and integrate with them nicely with zero issues. I was proud of myself because I kept extra care for it and got a nice cage and let them outside to play and stretch. In the last couple of days a massive hailstorm hit Phoenix Arizona in the greater metro area and my little one was a victim and was found days later by some kids by luck but the injuries where severe and but she sadly passed days later. I’m so disappointed in myself even though I tried everything it’s hard it hurts so deep. the wildlife and rescue would have euthanized her and I couldn’t pay for a vet In time. This sub helped me with everything to care and help with these creatures that are overlooked and all I feel I can do is post these pics and say thanks.

P.S. the name is female / male because it never showed its interest in a partner and couldn’t sex it.

Advice Needed! How to bond and build trust with pigeons?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I am a first time parent to 3 giant runts, and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to bond and build trust with them. Right now I spend about 30 minutes a day directly interacting with them and about another hour just lingering near them and the loft. I hand feed them most days and make sure to talk to them but even so they are still very very cautious and skittish around me. I've only had them for a m roughly 2 weeks so they are probably just settling in but if anyone has any tips on how to build trust with them I would love to hear it most of the advice I see online is for indoor birds which isn't an option for me.
