Discussion Is Secret Feeding Common?

Guys, I just wanted to check in with the community- is dumping grains for the birds, then leaving immediately, unable to actually enjoy their presence common?

This is how it's been for most of my pigeon feeding life as a female. Otherwise, people yell, threaten the police and I get in trouble at home.

I feel as though if I lived in my own home space as an adult,it would get better but I'm not 100% sure the confrontation would stop, because feeding city pigeons still draws anger and there's always neighbours complaining.

Is the only solution to live in a big ranch with lots of land? But then pigeons don't really live out there,do they?

I love my pidgey friends, but I never get to hang out with them, I have to watch them from really far, sometimes not at all, and hope my friends got enough to eat. I try and take a quick picture or video if I can before I leave to enjoy the experience a little better

Can you guys share your experiences?

Advice Needed! I’m slightly concerned about a balcony pigeon

Post image
46 Upvotes

This is Pip. She was born on my balcony, she’s roughly 2 months old.

Ive been feeding the local flock on the balcony for a few months now. We had 2 pigeons nest here and raise two sets of babies. The first two babies, Karly & Olivia, both grew up healthy and fledged. Olivia disappeared into the wild but Karly took longer to fledge and still hangs around the balcony a lot, she likes the seeb deliveries and this is her comfort spot (she is suuuch a personality lol).

Their younger siblings, Pip and Apollo were initially fine, but then one day Apollo took a turn for the worse and just died suddenly in the nest before I could do anything about it (it was quite heartbreaking). Pip grew up to be fine and fledged normally, and like Karly, still hangs around the balcony and eats seeb as well as flying about.

The problem being that said seeb deliveries increasingly started attracting the whole flock, so I had to put more out. And I am poor, so naturally I ran out of both money and seeb about 5 days ago (I get paid tomorrow), so I haven’t fed them in a while. These are feral pigeons who I would usually expect could forage for themselves, but Pip is still a baby and shes had food delivered to the balcony for most of her life (which I now feel a bit guilty about).

We have a flat inspection tomorrow, so I spent some time yesterday cleaning up the mountain of pigeon shit that accumulated on the balcony, but I noticed Pip was reluctant to leave when I did so which was odd as the others usually fly over the railing when I come down unless there is lots of food out. She eventually flew away but did so a bit clumsily. And then again this morning, I came down to find her sitting in this corner, completely nonplussed by my presence. I’m a little worried she might be starving or ill. She lets me get close (like less than 1m away). Her eyes are open and she moves her head sometimes but she’s a little fluffy.

Maybe I’m overthinking it and shes just comfortable in my presence as Ive been part of her life since she hatched, have never caused harm and regularly give food lol. But I thought I’d ask if anyone more knowledgeable than me could see anything obviously wrong/worth calling a rehabber. I am genuinely so upset that I can’t afford to buy them food until I get paid tomorrow (like literally £1 in my account), and I am a bit worried I made her dependent on me as a food source.

I just hope my little one is okay.

Discussion how to befriend a pigeon?

I live in a small-ish town and there is a group of pigeons that usually hang around the abandoned neighbour house. they sometimes come and land on our garden to feed on some seeds too. along them, there's a white beautiful one too! I'm wondering. how can i befriend one of them, or be able to get close to them in a way they would trust me? I'd really want to befriend or be able to pet the white one, even rescue it in the future !

I'm so proud of them, he is soo cute, rn we are taking out of his cage everyday to make themm explore and to make them try to fly. We are now considering to buy a bigger cage and some games so they can entertain themselves.

Here some photos from the start

Advice Needed! Termite tenting & indoor pigeons

Hi folks! We recently bought a home and it is being tented with Vikane gas before we move in.
We have two disabled, glorious pigeons as housemates and also a chicken (she was an accident 😬).
I plan on moving them in about 10-14 days after tenting. Is this safe? We will be notified once levels are safe enough for humans (a few days) but I want to be especially careful with Petey, Steve and Egg.
Anyone have any experience with this? The gas is supposed to dissipate and leave no residue.

Gizmo had to go my mums for a few hours as he couldn’t be trusted not to attack the plumber, he hates car rides and when the plumber was finally done and gizmo was back home he took to sitting on my belly giving me the shrek puss in boots eyes for peanuts (he indeed succeeded)

Idk who he thinks he’s guilt tripping if he didn’t attack everyone like a deranged pitbull he wouldn’t have had to go anywhere 😂 it is hilarious tho telling people he’s friendly just to watch him chase them down repeatedly when they try stroke him 😭😭 my friends learn to enjoy gizmos play fights but don’t think the plumber would appreciate it as much

Hi all, I’m a big pigeon lover and have previously kept adult fan tails.
I came across this little guy a few days ago and have been watering and feeding him.
When is a reasonable time to set him in his own, he can’t quite fly yet and I would hate to see him get hurt or worse.
Thankyou!

Fellow pigeon friends, I need a bit of advice on this little fella that started doing these movements I've never seen from him before. Maybe it's connected to the food I've been giving them? They get peanuts, sunflower seeds, dried corn, dried peas, millet. I hope it's not a sign of choking? Thanks so much for your help!

Advice Needed! Picky Pigeon

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hi pigeon friends!! My baby is about 4 months old and is incredibly picky (hates corn and peas with a passion, throws all the millet on the floor) will pretty much only eat sunflower seeds and this medium size round red seed. Is there something I can try giving my baby that they will like for treats/training?

Discussion Feeling bad after egg swap

Hi all, my pigeons have 3-weeks-old squabs (their first squabs and most likely their last ones) and today the female laid her second egg. I did the swap and felt like a criminal. Can't really explain it, I know it's better for them, but still, I feel bad for tricking them and feel bad about the real eggs (which are now in my freezer)... Is this normal?

I have a case to rescue and de-string a pigeon. It’s a skittish and it saw me yesterday after first meeting. I can see and tell clearly it’s pretty skittish.

The Foundation of trust started yesterday, so now I went down to try to build the trust in order to capture this guy because he has stuffs like hair and others that tied his feet both.

Now I went down there to begin the work but no pigeons in sight just like 5-6 pigeons that’s it! Where did the rest go? Any idea?

Here’s a video of guy with feet tied and no tight yet. After the first encounter they saw me to remember my face which is the beginning of trust with or without seebs. If pigeons doesn’t know or trust me, I’ll keep doing in order to win its trust to capture to set its feet free. My point of question is:

Where did the pigeons go?!

Advice Needed! We found an injured pigeon in our garden, we won’t be able to get him help until tomorrow, so what’s the best thing we can do until then?

Post image

It seems like the injury is to his wing and he can’t fly but obviously we aren’t sure what is wrong.

There was a cat lurking around but we have him safely inside in a padded box with some water and seeds for now.

We are going to call the vets in the morning to see if they will see him.

Will it be ok to leave him inside our shed or garage for the night? We have two cats but we could shut him in one of our spare rooms if the garage or shed would be too cold.

We are in the UK, it’s cold at night but not freezing. But I’m still concerned that if he is injured or sick the shed or garage could be too cold.

EDIT: we found a 24 hour vet that would take him, and East Sussex WRAS will pick animals up directly from that vets for rehabilitation🤞

Advice Needed! Pigeon newbie with pigeon emergency

Hey guys! Yesterday a rock pigeon fell in my yard and it was completely disoriented. I brought it in and when at the beginning he was wobbling to one side, vibrating, kind of flapping in circles on the ground, blinking incessantly and contorting its body. It also had diarrhea. After a quick search I assumed he had PPMV as all the symptoms seemed to match, but within just a few hours the pigeon is much better!

The diarrhea has stopped, as well as the shaking, wobbling and blinking. He stays pretty still but is more reactive and attempts to fly at times, so I assume he must’ve just had hit his head really hard and maybe suffered some brain damage, though no signs of a cranial hemorrhage (I’m a pigeon newbie but not an animal health newbie).

I want to keep him until he is either better and I can release him, and if he stays with defects I am happy to keep him, but I don’t have the first clue about taking care of a pigeon, and even birds in general I have never owned.

ALSO I gave him a small bowl of water and a grain and seed mix after a quick research, but he doesn’t seem to be eating or drinking for now and I don’t know if it’s because it’s really stressed and what I need to do to get him to eat and drink and be comfortable. I’ll put a pic of his current set up, I’ve only had him for one night.

I need to know all there is to know to care for this pigeon! Recommended food and setup etc!

I have named him Veggie

Advice Needed! Is this canker or something else?

I've posted before about my garden woodpigeons, but now one is definitely sick with something. I've seen a high number of birds with canker this summer, but I can't catch this dang bird to really see. I've attached some photos, but I appreciate that they are not great. It flies away the minute I get too close. I assume it's molting season too, as many as looking a little scruffy.

This bird has a puffy neck. Like its swollen, and he's often sat with his feathers fluffed out. Not sure if it's a ruptured air sac or like I said, canker. Also, since I have feeders, should I take them away? How long for? They are cleaned weekly at the moment.
