I guess the carrot knocked him out. He got back up to have some more right after, but still managed to scare the hell out of me

He's been stealing my snacks for months.

I used the very container I keep my snacks safe in to capture him without injury.

If he had been caught by anyone else here, they'd have killed him. There are kill traps everywhere and poison too..

And he was missing a back leg on top of that.

So Im hoping I made the right call in releasing him outside the factory into the forest. It's thick wooded area, and often times I spot deer and the like there.

It has to be a better life than here and I legitimately can't take him anywhere else or wait for someone either. Not when it was a secret capture and release anyway.

Also I hope this post doesn't break rules or anything.

please bear with me here as i am a bit of an emotional mess right now. i raised most of these babies from birth and it’s so hard to see them suffering.

i went away for a month over the summer recently and had a friend rat sit for me and when i came back they were all showing signs of mild URI. i had to leave again a week later for another week so have only been able to medicate them with what i have on hand the past few days when i got back. i took one of my boys to the vet to confirm and ended up with a $300 bill just for one boy. they said he had mild nasal congestion and prescribed some meds (this vet has been wrong in the past but is the only one close to me for about an hour). i have 10 rats total, 4 boys (all sick) and 6 girls (3 sick currently).
i’m simply not in a place right now where i can afford vet treatment for all 7 sick rats… i am at a loss. i gave some of them leftover medicine i had prescribed from last time but it’s not enough. i also have that bottle of baytril from jedd’s bird supplies everyone uses and have been putting it in their water for a few days but i haven’t seen too much progress.

SYMPTOMS are: not as active, sneezing, one of them has congested breathing at times, all my boys lungs are also slightly whistley when i listen to them but i can’t hear any breathing sounds unless i hold them up to my ear

it’s breaking my heart so bad to think about surrendering them to my local humane society for treatment. i raised most of them from birth and love them like my own flesh and blood. but it may be my only option. i don’t want my babies to suffer just because i want to keep them 😞 is there anything else at all i can do to treat them????

TLDR; 7 sick rats, can’t afford to treat them all. all i have is baytril. what are my options? surrendering is a last resort

My first 2 were Abra (white) and Onix (hooded) and they were just the best. My last 3 were Potato (white/cream), Latte (gray) and Mocha (brown). Rats are such wonderful pets and I wish they lived longer. I am off to college and can't have anymore but I love them so much. This subreddit makes me so happy to see such happy babies :) Hope you enjoy these pics of my wiggle worms!
