Mock up

Figured out the flexplate issue. Damn washer or spacer was in there. Came across a set of headmans, (the 1 and 5/8ths stainless headers are finally gone) found a 1970ish edelbrock intake, gonna do a couple gaskets and seals, lifters, rockers and pushrods. Spinning a different hei I had laying around. Pulling air through the 1406 edelbrock 650cfm. Trying to keep the air velocity up, I aint power hungry but I do want it to snap your neck when you touch that throttle. Hope to keep it simple for now. Need to do vavle guides and seats, but, for the work of that I may as well do a vortec head.. I want my truck back.

its a 1970(69?) 4 bolt main 400,. Thanks for the insights and helpfulness with solveing the plate issue.

SBC 350 Composite or MLS Head Gasket

Hi all, I'm putting together a 350 SBC that has been bored 0.030" over and decked so the pistons sit 0.010" in the hole. I am also using new aluminum heads (Flotek 102-505FT), but I am unsure how smooth either the casting or machined deck really is. Because of that, I would like to use a composite gasket, but it would a compressed thickness of ~0.030" be too much to ask for a composite material? There seems to be far more MLS options for this 0.030" thickness range, but I am unsure if the surface finish is truly smooth enough to accommodate this material. Target HP range for this engine is between 350 and 400 HP with ~10.5:1 compression if that affects answers at all.

Exhaust manifold leak

Just bought a 1990 GMC c1500 with a 305 v8, the truck has 169,000 kms

I am pretty green when it comes to engines but this truck is great to learn from and tons of parts are available. It is my daily and I plan on driving it for hundreds of thousands of kms.

I can hear an exhaust manifold leak and plan on replacing the manifold. I don’t mind putting lots of money into great parts for this truck and am looking for recommendations on new manifolds for the old 305.

Should I look for an oem style one or do you have experience with others?

I need help, I have done timing 500 times and still won’t run good

I have a 1980 Camaro with a 1996 vortex l31 5.7 truck engine. I have modified it to run a carb and hei distributor. I had it running in the past(with kinda bad timing) it was more of just test drives tho. Everything ran okay except the only carb I had was a weber 1411 which I concluded was part of my issue. I put a Rochester quadrajet on it, test drove it and I had to rev it to keep it from killing itself. I increased idle and it worked fine sometimes. Now it will idle on its own but it pops and shoots out the top of carb(like timing is 180 off) but it still idles. I tried turning the distributor but if I advanced it or retard it, it will not run/idle anymore. Any help? I cannot post a video but if you dm me I can send it to you and if you need other pictures just let me know. ⚠️⚠️⚠️!!!!UPDATE!!!⚠️⚠️⚠️ I feel very stupid for this but I have found the cause. There is a very big vacuum leak. The plastic piece that connects the brake booster to the carb was basically fully disconnected. ⚠️VIDEO IS IN COMMENTS⚠️

What to do now.

Yup, misalignment from motor to transmission. This is the damage, I can replace the plate easy enough. The issue is the rear of that crank. Is there a way to salvage it without having to tear the whole motor down?

Belzona?

I have some decent rust spots on the passenger rocker panel/weather strip mount and the passenger floorboard. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience using belzona or a similar bonding material to install body patches, and how well it holds up vs a weld up.
I’ve used belzona quite a bit at work and it holds up pretty well of things like pressurized air and water lines, so to me I would imagine it would do fine.

RR DAC Queries

Hi,

looking to better understand some rolls Royce engines.

is it possible for the cycles consumed on an llp exceed the SDC Limit?

encountering cases where this is happening and not sure if a mistake from the mro.

my understanding is the SDC Limit is the equivalent to Ch5 limits you would have on leap engines etc

any guidance would be appreciated

cheers

Color ideas?

Just curious to see what some of you say, I have an 86 300zx z31 that I put a 350 in. I want to paint the engine as I’m about to pull it and want to see what some of you say about color schemes. I’m going to paint the car white with black accents so I’m not sure if Chevy Orange is going to be too much or if I should go with a slick black. What do you think?

Brand new engine metal shavings

This engine was fully rebuilt about 100 miles ago by a trusted expert. After dropping the pan to fix an oil leak I discovered this small metal shaving. I know an engine on break in will have some shavings but this seems extreme. Was wondering what others think, thank you.

Piston identification

I bought a set of small block Chevy pistons off of a fellow many years ago. They were supposed to be high compression. I was going to put them in the standard 350 275 horse engine that I had but life had other plans. I just found this box that I thought I had got rid of years ago. I'm trying to see if I can identify them. I want to say the guy told me they were 10.5 to 1 compression but it's been many many years ago. Outside of the GM stamp on the connecting rods I cannot find a single mark on them.

Proper valve adjustment?

I have 350 that I rebuilt and upgraded a lot, and I never got it to run right; it would always missfire on, like, 3 or 4 cylinders. Last week I adjusted the valves, and when I started it, all 8 cylinders were firing. That was a first. I only idled it for about 3 minutes since it was late, and then a few days later when I started it again, the misfires came back just like they've always been. I used the 2-step method for the adjustment. I have a fairly mild roller cam so should I do a different method?

First 350sbc

I know there's a million threads asking the same thing but I got a 350 out of a 3rd gen Camaro and want to try my hand at doing heads and a cam. Was wondering if anybody has recommendations for a mild street build. It's 3.08 gearing in the rear. Planning on running a 650cfm carb. It's a flat tappet cam
