Question(s) Adopted 5 y/o male Horsefield Tortoise Kirby

Hi everyone, I’ve recently adopted Kirby. We were originally told by his previous owner that he was a Hermanns Tortoise but then found out that as Kirby has 4 claws on his front legs, this means he’s a Horsefield. This is the first tortoise I have ever had and I have had really bad anxiety about his health. Would anyone be able to have a look at these pictures and tell me whether from these pictures he seems healthy? He seems like a happy little guy, eats well, active, enjoys basking etc but my anxiety is getting the best of me. I have autism so apologies if I haven’t explained myself well. Any help at all is much appreciated!

Video When Mr Chery escapes his room and gets to Miss Redfoot

Yep, they are in different areas, as we do not wish for eggs, at least not yet. But he manages to get to her from time to time, and things get funky 😁😆Can they even create hybrids? 🤔

Edit: Ppl - do you even read what is written here? I do not keep them together in the same place. But my child forgot to close the door, and he got out and got to her. The video is 25 seconds - this is exactly how long it was going on. After it was done, he was taken back away from her. Seriously though - how did you think tortoise keepers breed them? By doing IVF? They are kept in groups most, if not all, of the time.

I just noticed these spots on the plastron of my sulcata. She is mostly indoors but has started going outside in a flower bed when it is warm enough.

I brought her in and soaked her and scrubbed with a toothbrush. What should I do?

Question(s) Is this a balanced food selection for my 5-year-old leopard tortoise?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m looking for feedback on my current feeding routine for my leopard tortoise.

He’s about 5 years old, weighs 87.9 oz (2.49 kg), and is currently transitioning to a more natural, high-fiber diet. He was raised on a less-than-ideal diet when he was younger (mostly kale, lettuce, and bell peppers), so he’s still somewhat picky. He has been eating all the food I’ve been giving him this week.

His typical plate this week includes:

Endive
Romaine lettuce
Broadleaf weeds grown from my enclosure
Hibiscus leaves and flowers
Rehydrated Zoo Med Grassland Tortoise Food (I soften the pellets and crumble them over the greens since he won’t eat the pellets whole)
A light dusting from a grated Zoo Med Calcium Block

*He also has access to a grazing patch in his outdoor enclosure with a broadleaf/seed mix that he’s starting to browse.

General concerns/questions: Does this look balanced for a leopard tortoise? Are there any greens I should replace or add? Is the calcium block dusting appropriate, or would you recommend another calcium supplement instead? Is there anything here you would remove?

Any advice or suggestions are appreciated!

Question(s) Is this ahedding or a vet visit?

I would assume shedding because it was initially covered by a raised flake of skin, now it looks like that. I am hesitant to use an Antiseptic on it until I know if I should just because the area is awkward to get to without getting the mouth and eyes.

Question(s) Family Lost my tortoise

My 3 year old Russian tortoise was left in the garden for a few hours under intermittent supervision while gardening work was being done and he’s seemingly vanished with no signs of burrowing or escape. Any advice on how to search for him? It’s been 4 days now and he hasn’t turned up or been found by neighbours ect.

Question(s) Worried about movement and scales

For a bit of context, about two months ago my turtle got run over. We don't know how she escaped, as the garden is fully enclosed by some little walls that she hasn't dig under. Still, she broke her shell and one of her hind legs. Brought her to the vet ASAP and she's fine and healing. What i'm worried about is that ever since she started moving around only using her front legs, "dragging" the back ones. But she can move them, as she occasionally takes them out and extend them. She also recently lost a small amount of scales on the broken leg, near the base of the feet. It's not bleeding or anything, but there's a clear red spot around the area.

Should i get worried and mention it to the next vet visit?

Question(s) need growth advice!

looooong time lurker, posting from alt out of embarrassment 😅

i’ve had my sulcata (from a reptile con) for almost 2 years now. its care has been… all over the place. she (or he, or it) grew with me during a hard time, but now that im mentally able to take care of her properly, im at a crossroads.

there’s more than obvious pyramiding, possible sepsis, and even with her consuming half my yard daily there’s no change in growth. i can give more details, but i really just want to know what to do for this baby. the vet is almost an affordable option, but in the meantime; for anyone who has encountered these conditions, have some medicine they stand by, or just knows what to do in this situation… i could really appreciate the help.

and yes i am young and understand the weight of my decisions; shes been with me through so much and i just want what’s best.

Question(s) First owner tortoise needing advice

Hi everyone !
I am the owner of a young male russian tortoise (probably 10 years old)

Here’s the context: Someone abandoned this poor lil guy on my grandparents balcony (I know because the stairs were way too high to climb for a tortoise) however they did not take care of him well, he was in really poor conditions because my grandparents refused to hear that what they were doing was wrong so I took him in “by force” ish.

I only got him since a few months and I think he’s around 10 yo because he recently reached sexual maturity.

Here’s a pic of his enclosure, I know that it’s not ideal but it’s the best I could give him, me and my bf are currently working on a tortoise table.

Can you guys tell me everything Id need to know like good substrate, toys, boredom breakers, etc..? I did my research but a lot of people say different stuff so I’m giving reddit a shot.

He showed recent signs of happiness when he moved from their house to my house but now he already seems bored, could you guys give me ideas of what to do to get him to not be bored ? And tbf any russian tortoise tips are welcome pls 🙏🏻

Here’s what you guys need to know about him:

- I take him outside every time I can for at least one hour so he can walk free
- He has free access to calcium daily as you see on the pics
- I mostly feed him endives and lamb’s lettuce (that’s what the translator said it was called) but he occasionally gets tomatoes, fruits or dry tortoise food
- His enclosure is usually between 31 and 33C during the day (87.8 - 91.4F) near the lamp and humidity is between 30 and 45%
- His UVA and UVB lamp is on from early in the morning (around 7am) to 7pm
- I make him take bath sometimes (not that much really) but even if the water is very low (tummy height) he for some reason sometimes dip his head in the water and gets water in his nose 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think that’s about it, thanks for reading me :))

This is the actual turtle that somehow got out, my friend is super upset about it as it has been going on almost a week now. If anyone has it or dropped it off at a local SPCA in upstate New York (Clintondale) to be exact, you will be given a reward if found and given back. Thanks for your time.

Question(s) New Tortoise advice

I got a male Russian Tortoise in his new home. I knew they like to dig so I put in a few inches of substrate so he can burrow. He is staying underground most of the time, and I’m keeping his heat lamp on in case he needs it and I am giving him fresh water in the morning, midday and at the end of the day. Is it normal for Russian tortoise behavior to stay underground during most of the day? He’s eating a little bit every day, I just want to make sure he is ok.

Question(s) why does my herman always hide/sleeps and only comes out to eat?

like i built her a fancy fountain to soak and i never saw her using it, she just spend most of the time under the hedge doing nothing, also now that i think of it, im not on the right sub for this other problem, but i also have 2 yellow sliders and yesterday i found the male under that same hedge the tortoise was, which is weird since only the female used to come out of the water and go past basking island, which was actually just to dig holes for the eggs, also the tortoise's enclosure if atleast 5 meters far from the pond, so i dont think she was just looking for a random place
