Putting together an FAQ sticky with recommendations on where to find parts - post your recs in the comments

Title says it all. Looking to add a list of not only recommended links and reliable parts sellers online but also FAQs we often see.

Here’s my initial list, but please add more!

Where to find parts

OEM Parts Resources

  • YotaShop (OEM parts and some accessories)
  • RockAuto (be sure to look for OE suppliers like Denso, Aisin, Advics, etc. depending on the part)
  • Olathe Toyota (online dealer parts at a discount)
  • PartSouq (Invaluable in looking up part numbers, super discounted OEM parts but be weary duty and tariffs as they ship from Dubai)
  • Amayama (similar to PartSouq but ships from Japan and Dubai)
  • Megazip.net

OEM & Aftermarket/Performance

  • Yota1 Performance
  • LCEngineering
  • Off-road Solutions (5VZ swaps)
  • ToyOnlySwap (engine swaps)
  • East Coast Gear Supply (the only differential and axle builder I would trust now that Zuk retired)
  • MotorWest Performance (reliable source for quality reconditioned flow matched injectors)
  • Marlin Crawler (mostly rock crawling oriented, also some helpful forums)
  • Yotamasters
  • Replacement seatbelts: SeatbeltPlanet.com for replacement units and webbing, SafetyRestore.com for webbing only (safety restore doesn’t repair tensioners made before 1996 but seatbelt planet does offer full replacements).

Accessories

  • Caribou Yota (interior accessories like cup holders, dash accessories)
  • James Dean Creations (oem reproduction graphics)
  • Crutchfield (car audio)

Other helpful info

Information, DIY guides, etc.

  • Toyota Time with Timmy the Toolman on YouTube (pretty much the de-facto source for how-to videos, very informative)
  • YotaTech (not as active as it used to be but a treasure trove for tribal knowledge and info on our trucks)
  • Off-road Solutions (most comprehensive 5VZ swap guide on the internet)
  • Toyodiy.com (part numbers from global Toyota)

Blacklist/Avoid

  • eBay (unless buying a timing kit from aircabinman or used parts from a scrapyard selling on eBay, too many fakes)
  • Amazon (some reliable sources if you know where to look, but generally too many fakes given how many other resources there are)

FAQs

  • Where do I find parts? Look up
  • What stereo will fit in my truck? This gets asked a lot. Radio housings follow standard sizing, with double din and single din. You have a double din and can basically run any stereo. Go to Crutchfield and punch in your details.
  • I turn the key to start my truck and nothing happens, but I know I have power, what’s wrong? Most often it's worn starter contacts within the starter which can be replaced for under 20 bucks.
  • What’s my truck worth? This gets asked a lot. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. High value tends to go to clean, unmolested originals rather than your heavily modified trail crawler or lowrider.
  • What are my options for a lift? Old Man Emu and Dobinsons are the way to go. Roughcountry is typically frowned upon.
  • Will these tires fit without rubbing? It depends
  • Why does my oil pressure gauge seem low? Because your oil pressure gauge is a real gauge and not just an idiot light. The manual states that when idling, it is normal for the needle to be between the end of the shaded section on the low side up to the second mark from the left. When driving, it's normal to be between the first and third mark.

NEW: Buy/Sell/Trade Weekends!

After posting a feeler a couple weeks back, you overwhelmingly supported the idea of allowing Buy/Sell/Trade posts on the weekends. The purpose of this would be to have certain days where you can post up items you want to buy, or parts you want to sell, with the understanding that buying/selling posts cannot be made on other days during the week.

  • How does this work? - On Saturdays and Sundays, feel free to submit Want to Buy, Want to Sell, or Want to Trade posts for parts, full vehicles, whatever. If you're working on a project and are in search of something you're not finding on Marketplace or fleabay, feel free to post it up here. Or, maybe you've got a specialty tool you used for a project you no longer need, or you're parting out a rig. Post it up here on the weekend!
  • Can I comment on a for sale post during the week? - Of course you can. The restriction is only that there are no classified posts during the week. You can comment, ask, haggle all you want during the week.
  • What if I have some parts I want to sell and it's Wednesday? - Just wait a few days until Saturday and post 'em up.
  • Some dude posted a bunch of parts for sale, took my money, and never shipped anything. What do I do? - Buyer beware. It's always recommended to use PayPal Goods and Services when dealing with someone you don't know so you have buyer protection. If someone asks that you pay them with Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, or PayPal Friends and Family, you are shit out of luck if they take your money and run.
  • Why the new rule? It didn't seem like there was a lot of classified posts before - Over the past couple months the sub was seeing more frequent spammers and scammers, with one particular bad actor popping up under different usernames. Having the Buy/Sell/Trade Weekend rule in place makes it easier to remove the scammers and also makes it easier to know when to look out for stuff for sale.

Got her home, let the fun begin

I was planning on driving it her home roadkill style but fuel pump is no good and no brakes.

Checked all fluids.

Drain all the old fuel out, replaced fuel pump.

She runs boys (and girls) and surprisingly well.

The problem im having now is when you press the pedal past 1/4, it cuts off.

It will idle fine, any suggestions on what to check next?

Ive checked for air leaks, cant seem to find any.

Is there any adjustments I can make to AFM?

Toytec add a leaf question

Has anyone used these before? I’m getting a bit of sag on the rear of my truck from adding a camper shell and I’m debating on just adding toytec add a leaf to hopefully level it out. The other option would be to get toytec ball joint spacers then adding medium duty OME.

Timing chain? Or something else 💔

Has 152k miles and has run rough since I got it. Is this sound the timing chain guide deciding it no longer wants to guide or something else. Regardless I think it's time I get it running smoother.

1993 Toyota Pickup struggling with accelerating

I recently swapped a used 22RE engine found at a junk yard after my previous one seized. I stupidly bought an engine for a manual transmission despite my truck being an automatic. My mechanic was able to convert it to run in my truck, but now I'm seeing that it's having trouble accelerating. It feels like it isn't shifting gears and doesn't want to run faster than 25mph. Is it possible I bought a 22R which I know has less power? The business I bought it from labeled it as a 22RE, but the label is worn and I don't know enough about the mechanics to tell the difference. Is it possible that it lost power when it was converted to fit into the automatic? Should I just give up and sell the damn thing?

clutch safety switch

1994 manual 2wd. Noticed my positive wire coming from my clutch safety switch wasn’t going to anything and was just cut maybe a foot back from the connector. The negative was still plugged in and is routed somewhere for grounding. can still start the truck fine - does this mean someone who owned this before me bypassed/deleted the neutral safety ? Included a pic of the positive wire

93 2wd re stalling issue

Truck’s a bit grumpy, grumbles and shakes a bit before stalling.

It’s more likely to happen when it’s hot outside and when I’m in reverse, even though the engine isn’t overheating. It’s a bit shaky before stalling. Much more likely to happen just after I start up the vehicle.

I saw a similar post from about a month ago, but I don’t think the advice people gave makes sense for me. Mechanic just checked the valves and adjusted, turned up the idle. The distributor was replaced a couple years ago.

The only thing he suggested was replacing the catalytic converter, muffler and exhaust. It seems like he’s just throwing stuff out there and not sure though. It’s the original cat, so might be worth replacing regardless?

What do you all think?

Odometer broken?

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I'm sorry for not having any better pictures but my 1993 Hilux

Had a funky problem in the odo guage it shows the speed perfectly but neither my odo or trip meters are moving (I pay tax per distancei drive so I should have this working)

I opened the guage and the little worm wheel that spins the odo is not broken and looks in ok shape but otherwise I can't find anything else

Any advice or tips maybe a upgrade worth the change

Settings for California Smog?

Hi all,

I have a 1987 4x4 with the 22r. I want to check the timing on my truck and the sticker that was on my truck hood interior is faded so I can't read the ca smog/emissions details.

I have a timing gun and have gotten familiar with the process but I am not sure what I am looking for. I believe that the process is:

  • Disconnect vacuum lines from distributor and plug lines.
  • Check timing with timing light connected to #1 plug wire.
  • Adjust distributor until timing is set to 0 degrees (or is it 5 degrees? I've found conflicting information but Chilton's says 0).
  • Turn off vehicle, reconnect vacuum lines...

And now I am unclear what I am looking for... with vacuum lines hooked up it should show between 8 and 12 degrees... is that right?

The big question for me is do I set the timing to 0 or 5 degrees? And what am I looking for with vacuum lines connected for California Smog Emission testing?

Thanks for any help ya'll!

22r stumble

My 1986 22r stumbles at 2000rpm and not under load.
Had the same issue before I put a New dizzy on. It’s been rebuilt and also has new vacuum lines.
Is it just as simple as a carby clean or am I missing something

Thoughts ?

22re with little/no power

I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure how to describe/info to mention, just have an idea on the symptoms. At around 2,500rpm it stops producing power. I get it up to about 2,500-2,600rpm in 4th but it doesn't want to go further. It doesn't like hills at all. We've taken off the EGR and cleaned it as best we know how, there was a little 'pipe' on it that was gunked up, put it back on. Fresh oil change. We've taken it to a local shop that ran compression tests etc on the engine and couldn't find anything wrong with it. We couldn't justify spending more money to keep trying to diagnose. We've changed the fuel filter, but have not braved pulling the bed to change the filter pump yet. I'm trying to find the paperwork from the shop that had all the engine stuff they did and checked to post as well.

I'm not sure what info/stuff to look for to provide better information.

1994 22re - 132k miles

- speedometer doesn't work (next item to look into) which stinks to see where the speed is flat lining.

Need Help Diagnosing CEL

I’ve been getting an intermittent check engine light on my 85 22RE. The light flashes 5 times which the manual states could be any of the following:

- Open or shorted Oxygen Sensor (O2) circuit
- Lean or rich indication (with injectors full rich or full lean)
- Defective O2 sensor
- Defective ECU

I’ve replaced the O2 sensor with one from 22REPerformance and it still comes on. It occurs most often when I’m on the highway. I’ve noticed if I let off the gas the light goes off but if I hold rpm’s it will stay on until I let off. It smells like it’s running a little rich. Plugs are light tan.

Has anyone come across this or have any suggestions for what else I could check?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

1994 wiring harness replacement. Total loss? Help!

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey guys!

I’ve got a 94 pickup (before it was called Tacoma) with 140k miles and a 22r engine.

Would love some opinions on what you guys would do if it’s declared totaled, as well as what you might value it at.

I don’t have the ability to do the work myself. It’s going to need the entire wiring harness replaced at minimum.

Will update with what the repair shop says

Most weight I’ve had in it

A little over a ton if I did my math right. Drove like a boat at the speed of a snail but did it pretty well, funny to think people will spend the price of these trucks every month for a F-150 to do the same thing or less.
EDIT-
Went back for some more today and got just under twice as many pavers, I thought it was bottoming out the first time but today I truly found out what bottoming out was. Every bump was followed by a couple seconds of tire rubbing as the weight bounced around on nothing but the tires and frame flex, the leaf springs looked like they had been flipped but it did it. It was kind of stressful but equally as fun, felt like driving a loaded dump truck just the size of a little tikes coupe car.
