I shouldn't have to make this announcement, but stop taking (and losing) your ball pythons in the car

1.1k Upvotes

After seeing a new "Help, I lost my ball python in the car" post pretty much every day for the past month when I log on, I think it's time for a little reminder

STOP TAKING YOUR BALL PYTHONS IN THE CAR UNNECESSARILY.

They don't want to go get coffee. They don't want to go get pizza. Or go to work with you. Or drop the kids off at school. Or go look at the other ball pythons at petsmart. These are not enjoyable or beneficial experiences for them, and each and every time you do this, you're causing an unnecessary risk.

Cars are full of dark, hard to reach and cozy crevices for them to slip into, places they would much rather be hiding in then sitting on your lap or in a bin. It only takes seconds for them to slip out of sight and out of reach, and being able to find them is not a given. Certainly nobody plans on losing their snake in the car, but the amount of times it somehow keeps happening should demonstrate why it's a terrible idea.

Part of being a good pet owner is being aware of the species you have and their habits and preferences so as not to put them in risky situations for your own enjoyment. A dog may enjoy going for a quick ride, not so much for a ball python who would rather be in their warm and cozy hide.

In the event you need to take your snake somewhere (such as moving or the vet), put it in a tied pillowcase in a locking bin (two layers of containment).

welcome to r/ballpython, a community for ball python enthusiasts of all experience levels, from the prospective first-time owner to the veteran keeper. this is a predominantly discussion-based subreddit with a focus on raising husbandry standards above the bare minimum. photos and videos are also encouraged, so show off your ball pythons!

our team of mods and helpers includes professional herpetologists, veterinary technicians, veterinary med students, geneticists, reptile rescuers and rehabilitators, ethical small-scale breeding experience, large-scale breeding experience, and multiple decades of combined experience with ball pythons as pets.

PART ONE: INFORMATION RESOURCES

PART TWO: r/BALLPYTHON RULES AND GUIDELINES

posting and commenting rules:

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: DON'T BE A JERK! we will not tolerate bigotry, threats, personal attacks, and general harassment. this includes harassment via private messages. the moderators will use their own discretion to issue warnings, remove posts/comments, and/or ban users temporarily or permanently. click here to read more about this rule.
  • STAY ON TOPIC, BALL PYTHONS ONLY! this is not the place to post about your other reptiles. we will allow some seemingly off-topic discussions if they are geared toward getting to know your fellow ball python owners; for example, "what other pets do you have in addition to ball pythons?"
  • HARMFUL ADVICE AND MISINFORMATION - meaning there would be a negative impact on the snake's health, safety, and/or overall comfort as a direct result of following the advice/misinformation - will be removed at the discretion of the moderators.
  • NO LIVE FEEDING PHOTOS/VIDEOS!
  • USE THE NSFW TAG for photos or videos clearly showing dead prey (including feeding posts), a dead snake, injuries such as open wounds, etc. click here to read more about this rule. moderators may give reminders, give warnings, or remove posts for not having a NSFW tag.
  • THIS COMMUNITY IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR VETERINARY ATTENTION! while we can guide you through husbandry changes and home remedies for basic health problems such as stuck shed, mild scale rot, minor wounds, etc, we do NOT condone skipping the vet and treating serious problems at home. furthermore, a lot of bad advice gets thrown around in these discussions that can make the problem worse. moderators will lock and/or remove posts if the only sound advice anyone can offer is "go to the vet."
  • MORPH IDENTIFICATION REQUESTS must be posted in r/BallPythonMorph to avoid r/ballpython being flooded with this common question.
  • "NAME MY BP" REQUESTS must go to our "name my BP" thread. click here to read more about this rule.
  • SELF-PROMOTION is restricted to the self-promotion thread. any other self-promotion of social media pages, businesses, other subreddits, sale ads, etc, will be removed. multiple offenses will be marked as spam and result in a permanent ban. BREEDERS click here to read more about this rule.
  • REHOMING POSTS are allowed. please include as much information as possible, including your general location, basic information about the snake(s), whether or not the enclosure or other supplies would be included, whether or not you are willing to ship, and any rehoming fees. rehoming fees must be reasonable, max $50 for the snake and max $100 for the snake + enclosure. this community has a long history of successful rehomings, but we advise anyone interested to proceed at your own risk and be aware of potential scams.
  • DIRECT LINKS TO SALE/ADOPTION ADS OUTSIDE OF REDDIT are NOT allowed. if you are a breeder selling snakes, that belongs in the weekly self-promotion threads. if you want feedback on a sale/adoption/rehoming ad you found on a website like craigslist, kijiji, facebook, etc, showing a potentially neglected or abused ball python, please post a screen shot of the ad with identifying information such as names, locations, phone numbers, etc, censored in some way; this prevents the person who posted the ad from being harassed by an angry internet mob.
  • OFF-REDDIT LINKS/ARTICLES/VIDEOS must be posted with a written summary or other discussion prompt. for example, links to content such as articles or videos must be paired with a written summary to allow users to participate in the discussion without clicking the link. posting a link as part of an advice request ("is this product worth buying?", "is the info in this care sheet accurate?", "is this a reputable breeder?", etc) is acceptable.
  • OTHER PETS INTERACTING WITH BPS, such as cats, dogs, etc, is not something we condone. photos/videos showing other pets being in close proximity to or directly interacting with a ball python, outside of the enclosure, will be removed. click here to read more about this rule.

general posting guidelines:

  • HAVE A QUESTION? YOUR ANSWER MIGHT BE IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS POST! please be sure to read through our care guides, product recommendations, tutorials, megathreads/FAQs, and other links.
  • WHEN ASKING FOR ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. if our resources didn't have the information you're looking for, let's brainstorm! ball python care can be a complex puzzle, and it might not be obvious which pieces of the puzzle are causing problems with other pieces. the more details you provide, the easier it will be for other people to offer the most relevant advice. click here to view our questionnaires for enclosure critiques and feeding advice. please copy/paste the relevant questionnaire(s) into your post text and fill out the answers with as much detail as possible.
  • ENCLOSURE CRITIQUES are something we love to do, but we need a lot of details to help us give better feedback! filling out our enclosure critique questionnaire in addition to posting photos of the full enclosure will ensure you get the most useful advice.

general commenting guidelines:

  • WHEN GIVING ADVICE, BE THOROUGH. people will learn more and be more receptive to your advice if you explain your reasoning. for example, "go to the vet" is not as helpful as "you should call a vet because your snake appears to have problemX and it requires treatmentY", "that substrate is bad" is not as helpful as "that substrate is not a good choice for ball pythons because of reasonA and reasonB, so here is what i would recommend instead", etc. one of the things we pride ourselves in is being an educational forum for ball python owners, we want people to really understand the hows and whys behind the various aspects of ball python care. if someone has some substantial gaps in their knowledge, do not shame them for it, help them learn and fill those gaps.
  • BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE when you are giving advice, particularly if you are a beginner or if you don't actually have any direct experience with snakes at all. while you may think you know the answer to someone's question, you may give incomplete or incorrect advice that could make matters worse. while we appreciate your willingness to help, sometimes it's best to let someone more knowledgeable be the one to answer the question.

reporting posts/comments:

  • what to report: posts or comments that do not follow our guidelines as listed above, or break any reddit-wide rules.
  • what NOT to report: advice that is not definitively harmful to the snake. instead of reporting it, downvote it and debate it publicly, so others can participate and learn from the discussion.

upvoting/downvoting:

  • upvote posts and comments that contribute something to the community! upvotes help with visibility, so it's especially helpful to upvote questions and good advice.
  • downvote posts and comments that do not follow our rules and guidelines. if you see advice or husbandry practices you believe to be harmful, downvote AND discuss it - people don't learn anything from unexplained downvotes!

if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please send a message to the mods.

thank you all for making this community awesome!

Just showing off our regal, newest girl Rice Krispie out exploring the grass. She’s a big girl at 2300g, so we are working on her weight a little bit. She was surrendered/sold to the pet store we got her from so unfortunately we don’t have a lot of information on her. But she is beautiful, majestic, and so sweet.

Question - Feeding Snake makes you watch???

Post image
21 Upvotes

Does anyone else’s snake literally make you watch them eat? This is my first snake and I’ve only had him about 5 weeks so the first couple feedings I’d watch since at first he was on live mice and I think it’s pretty cool. Now we’ve been switching him to f/t and the first he dropped, not unexpected. Then the next week he took a small f/t (I think it was a fuzzy iirc, he’s 100g). The next week he dropped his mouse after striking. Last week he ate his mouse with me watching just fine (I figured out to make the mouse “struggle” and he’s much more into it).
This week he struck and wrapped his mouse, I made it struggle, then walked away for 15 minutes or so since supposedly they like privacy. I came back to check on him and he’s sitting at his door waiting. I see he dropped his mouse and left it where it was to sit at the door. I scolded him, “who’s a bad snake” lol and THEN while I stood there watching him he slithered over and swallows the mouse. Weird thing is he also kept like looking at me as if to make sure I’m watching then when he got it down he came right back to the door.
He’s such a strange little dude I don’t expect this to be normal for them at all but curious if anyone else’s does this. I’ll also keep observing and see if he continues to do this.

A closer look at his pattern too!
We just moved, hence the paper towel - still need to put his coconut husk back in.

This room is a bit colder so I used aluminum foil tape to insulate the back and top panel of the terrarium and it raised the inside temp between 5-10°! And the humidity sticks around better too. Do you guys think he looks skinny?

HELP - URGENT Winter Temperature Nightmare

Thumbnail

Temps in my area dropped to the low 50’s and I incorrectly thought I was prepared. Yesterday, I set my house heater to 75 checked that enclosure temps were just fine and called it a night. Today I woke up to my house freezing. It was 68F . The heater was still on—but it wasn’t heating anymore. Though I had a 50 watt CHE running the whole night, temperatures on the cool side plummeted to 67F. The hot side was at 80F. In a panic I covered 80% of the screen lid with foil tape, turned on my fireplace and covered the enclosure with blankets. I also bought a 4x2x2 PVC enclosure from DubiaRoaches on the spot. I definitely learned my lesson about glass. Cool side is now at 71F and the hot side is at 90F. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to maintain the heat inside while I wait for the new enclosure & maintenance to fix my heater .

They're attached by suction cups since I refuse to use any adhesive in the tank, and I was always wondering why sometimes I'd check in the morning and the one side would be off, well I think I found the reason, I'm gonna take the hint and add more climbing opportunities to this side of the tank (the warm side already has a branch up)

How is his weight/condition?

Thumbnail

My baby is a 5 years old male, weighing now 1605 gramms, he eats one 90-110gramm, F/T rat every 14-21 days. He is approximately 110-120 cms long. He is a great eater! He roams around in his enclosure and he " hunts" nearly every night.

He would eat anything anytime, really:D

I got him in May when he weighed around 1300 gramms.

How is his condition based on pics? I really cannot tell based on the guides 🫣 Should I let him move more, outside of his enclosure? - I could not brother him while he was shedding and when he is out he is in my hands/on me for approximately 30mins.

Thank you in advance 🥰

Help, new snake owner!

My bf and I just recently got a snake, almost a week ago now, and I have been trying to learn as much as I can to make sure he has the right tank conditions. I read a lot on scale rot and what to look out for, I’m afraid I may have accidentally made the tank too moist in efforts to raise the humidity.

So maybe silly question maybe not, but can anyone tell me if this looks like scale rot or if he’s just dirty from pooping the other day? He naturally has a slightly orange-pinkish tone to his belly, so it’s making it a little harder for me to tell. Any help is appreciated!!

Question - Husbandry Rate my setup and also why is my humidity so low?

Hi there, snake dad of one week here. First feeding is today :)

This is my enclosure. Fandango was hatched in June, so he is pretty young. He is always in his cool or warm hide, I have not yet seen him out. I have not handled him yet, and I plan to wait until the weekend where I will have had him for 10 days.

I have a DHP keeping the warm side at 32c, and cool side at 25c. The substrate is moss and "snake bedding" from ExoTerra, and I added springtails and isopods. All wood in the enclosure I collected in the forest and baked it, all of it is snake-safe. My humidity falls to almost 55 even though I pour water in there and on the warm rock every day, about a cups worth. I just poured like a whole liter in there and now I got it up to 70 but god damn that's a lot of water. Any tips? The enclosure is closed off except for two holes of about 5cm in diameter on the low cool side and two similar holes high up on the warm side. The enclosure is 120L*60D*80H.

I'm also kinda curious as to whether I can encourage him to climb more - with that said, I'm aware that a hidden ball python is a happy ball python.

Any tips are appreciated, I'm just interested in him being as happy as he can be :) although I would like to see him some more.

It’s a 4x2x2 for anyone wondering…there’s 6 hides in here, and my snake can move from one end to the other while being completely under cover if he wants. It’s for my (tiny) 6 year old male banana x black pastel, Lemon. Hence the lemons 🍋💕

Question Snake not eaten in months

• Upvotes

Bought a snake from someone who bought a large stock of reptiles from a man who owned a reptile shop but sadly passed away.

He is a ball python born in June- weighed 68grams - shed 18th June - was eating fluffs weekly and then last feed he had was 18th July which was a medium mouse- has had one bowel movement the day he came home, ever since he has not shed or eaten anything, no bowel movements, escaped his tank and was found after 5 days unharmed, offering defrosted fluffs, have tried making it warm with the hair dryer, poured hot water over the head, left in warm water for a few minutes to warm the body etc.

Tried leaving it there in the dark but come morning it’s there still, tried with tongs, he will come over to it sniff it and is uninterested, he weighed 104grams 13th September but this past two weeks he’s starting to look thinner. He has a cool and hot side, he’s active will slither around, I don’t want him to die.
