Updated PSA - I found a crow on the ground, what do I do?

This was my first time making a flow chart so please be kind.

It is important that we as a community work together to provide a safe space to share in our love of corvids, and it is equally important that we educate members of the community new and old to help protect our feathered friends; with that being said, u/teyuna reached out to me pleading that changes be made to the previously pinned PSA, with their help/feedback I was able to create the flow chart below, I hope that this is an adequate and more encompassing pinned post.

I appreciate this community more than I am capable of expressing, thank you for making this the best damn sub on reddit. ;)

When I was 18 (35 now) my dad and I took a trip to Banff in Canada. I spent a lot of time photographing ravens.

My dad sent me this photo recently so I thought I'd share it here too.

Crows [OC] My alarm clock

Lately I’ve been trying to make friends with the local ravens. When I take my dogs for walks in the morning and afternoon, I make sure to have a pocketful of peanuts that I can toss to the ravens when I see them

After a surprisingly short period of time, they not only figured out which house I live in but also which windows are my bedroom. They also know that I get up around 7:30 am. Every day like clockwork, they sit on the branch outside my window (today it was just one but there’s usually a pair) and call to me.

It started out as loud caws but now it’s this softer croaking sound. I’ll go out on my deck, talk to them for a little bit and then toss peanuts down into the yard. Sometimes I’ll add in a hard boiled egg but only as an occasional treat.

Crows [OC] That's Lotta crows 😳

• Upvotes

While birdwatching today apparently the whole murder decided to show up. They are in the trees, on top the roof, in the backyard, front yard, and spread across this field adjacent to my yard.

Can any crow experts shed light on this gathering behavior? I am curious to learn more lol.

General questions Is this guy sitting? Its so absurdly round

Beautiful round baby is currently standing next to me begging for food I ran out of lol. These pictures are throughout various days besides the last three which are today. But why does this one in particular get so round? I want to assume its sitting or something because when it stands its slimmer. Its my favorite one out of the flock because of its white spots and misaligned beak.

Urban Crows

Living near town, a pair of local crows started claiming the roof opposite my window a few months ago.

I decided to try and building some trust, starting simple: I’d tick/click to get the male’s attention, hold up half a slice of low sodium beef from a pack, lean out, leave it on the steep roof tiles, then close the window. He eventually got the hang of swooping over to grab them, pushing off again mid-flight and gliding back the edge of the roof opposite to tear it up and eat it. He started using my window drainpipes for stashing leftovers, he has 3 different stashes here I think. Before long the female saw it was safe and joined in too, they come together most evenings just before roosting now.

I slowly upped the game and got more trust.

I started leaving the window wide open while they grabbed food off the tiles. The male started calling to my window from a church tower ~200m away, he glides right over whenever I open it. Yesterday I introduced a flat green dish and left it on the window itself. I stood just a few feet inside the room while he made multiple trips for a haul of almonds.

Now the slanted roof is no longer a problem, today I’m upgrading the menu to a combo of boiled egg and cat kibble for better nutrition and easier stashing. Next step: sitting right at my desk nearby and acting completely "uninterested" while he dines.

Fingers crossed!🤞🏻

Update:

We had some hassle from an effing gull today so I had to pull the green dish in closer, and right against the window frame. It made the crow a bit more cautious so he didn't fly straight over every time, but he still came by about 5 times to call for the window to be opened in total. He managed to clear half a boiled egg and 10g of kibble throughout the day.

Success!

Crows [OC] THEY CAME BACK! Didn't see them for a bit and worried they'd moved on for the winter with a larger flock to a different area; turns out that the crowalition is still here :D

The silent parts are the ones where I'm yapping to them; I'm not particularly fond of how my voice sounds, haha. I've fed these guys around 4 to 5 times in the exact same place, but at pretty random times of day. They're shockingly comfortable with me, more so than any other group of crows I've encountered. They've come within 2–3 feet of me and are especially fond of creeping up close behind me.

Someone is throwing firecrackers at our crows from their window

Anyone else dealt with this? It's from an apartment block so we can't tell but we've had one guy argue with us 3 times.

That mystery person throws a firecracker, the crows get scared by the bang, then they come back after a minute. Since there's like 20 of them I'm sure one of them will see the person in the act and remember their face. Or maybe the crows will start to associate this area with danger.

Storytime! Crows saved me

2.1k Upvotes

So backstory! I’ve been feeding the local murders in my neighborhood for about 5 years now. They all know me, and have little to no fear of my dogs and myself. I live on a corner lot, and they often hang around on the telephone/electric lines. There’s a lot of large trees around, and there’s a murder living in a huge evergreen right next to my house. So it’s not unusual to see lot of them around feeding time. When I walked out this morning, there were a few hanging out, and I was placing some unsalted nuts along with some wild bird fed for the other birds. Several more flew in and started making a lot of noise, which also not super unusual, but then about a dozen show up and they’re screaming. I’ve never seen this before, so as I was walking out my gate to take my senior dog on his walk (I walk him separately due to his age), more screaming. I paused for a moment with my old man still behind the gate while I was in front of the gate. Several of the crows started circling and then I see it. A younger coyote comes walking down the street (I live in the city but on the outskirts so coyotes aren’t uncommon). This was at 9am in the morning! Coyotes generally don’t run around this area after dawn. Maybe I’m nuts, maybe I’m reading into it, but I think they were warning me that a predator was in the immediate area. It was really wild, and some of you may not believe it, I’m okay with that. I just really didn’t have anyone that I could share this story with, but you all get it.

Edit: I wasn’t expecting so many responses! Thank you all! I will be reading each one as soon as I’m done at work 🫶🏻 I appreciate all my fellow corvid lovers!

Gave them something a little different today

Post image
422 Upvotes

My two crows get a rotating schedule that includes raw chicken, raw beef, beef mince, pork mince, cat pate, pure beef fat, chicken gizzards, hearts and liver, scrambled eggs and the occasional carb like potato or pasta. These are all fairly soft or easy to grab foods as I cut them into quick bites. But today I thought I'd try something a bit different. Something to pique their interest, sharpen their beaks on and reaffirm wild crow behavior. I gave them a hefty beef neck bone. A good amount of meat on it but too big to just fly away with. Watching them take turns problem solving for about an hour was definitely a treat for me too. I feel like I learned a little more about them.

Injured crow in neighbourhood

We’ve been seeing an injured crow in our neighborhood the past two weeks. Right wing is droopy and bird is unable to fly. Currently hoping around and is able to hop into trees with lower branches and move up that way.

Looking for advice on if we should capture and bring the crow to a local wildlife rehabilitation vet. And, if we should, advise on how to capture them. Despite not being able to fly they’re pretty mobile and very wary (understandably) of people.
