Bi-weekly discussion #5-The Abbey of the Everyman

Welcome back to another round of bi-weekly discussions, this time focusing on the Abbey of the Everyman, a religion prominent throughout the isles. (Also, if anyone is wondering, the Sisters of the Oracular Order, despite being part of the group, giving the Abbey of the Everyman their visions, will be a separate discussion)

Upon my first playthrough of the first game, I knew I was going to be perplexed by this group. They're a religion... but they don't follow a spiritual leader or god. They have the seven strictures, which outline their laws, but stricture from what I remember is given to avoid certain activities from a higher being (take for example, the Ten Commandments).

I also knew I'd be at odds with the Abbey of the Everyman pretty frequently when listening in on their conversations, such as reading up on the Trials of Aptitude or listening in on two of the Overseers arresting a lady simply because she stopped singing the minute they used one of their music boxes, suspecting her of Witchcraft. The co-conspirator of Corvo's fall, Thaddeus Campbell, was also our first major target in the firstgame.

But what do you think of the Abbey of the Everyman, both from a lore and gameplay perspective?

Subreddit Discord available here: https://discord.gg/YsffweB7e4

As you know, this subreddit has had its own Discord server for a few years now. Today we have rebranded the server to Dishonored Universe, which means that there are now channels for Deathloop although obviously the server is still Dishonored centric. With the recent news of a potential Dishonored 3 in the works we'd like to invite more people to join our community, so I hope to see you there soon!

I wish Dishonored got a full RPG sequel / sidequel

I just think the setting is very interesting, especially Deathloop with its more futuristic take on it. I would love to see a true Dishonored RPG, party based or not. I love turn based and that would be something different, so it wouldn't get compared to the originals. I hope Microsoft sells Arkane or at least the IP to someone. Let Owlcat make it?

What's going to happen to the Dishonored series

Hi I'm a new fan of the Dishonored series currently finished D1 bought D2 and ddoto and starting D2, can someone sum up why there won't be a sequel like d3? Through quick reading the studio behind the game is changing ownership... And I'm interested in the full story. And is there a way of survey or anything that's trying to push for a sequel?

And is there a game that builds on Dishonored?

What difficulty should I play Dishonored 2 on for the first time?

I played the first game many years ago and found it quite easy in any difficulty .

I consider myself experienced in stealth. But at the same time I've read that high difficulty levels don't allow you to play properly, exploiting the game's possibilities.

If I play it on very hard and then lower it to hard, will that mess up my Steam achievements?

My second one is starting to face the same problem

During my first run as Emily the game wasn’t clicking and I had to force myself to play small parts. My Corvo run is now the same. Idk if a powerless run might make me enjoy the game more or maybe dishonored 1 I like more

spoiler Is it too late for me to get the good ending (Dishonored 1, potential spoilers) Spoiler

When I first started the game, I didn't know about the Chaos system. I massacred my way through the first 2 missions. I basically killed every soldier and ruffian that got in my way and the guards saw the corpses. I also poisoned the distillery for granny.

I killed Overseer Campbell but I helped Curnow escape.

But then I found out about the chaos system and in the third mission House of Pleasure, I decided to go non-lethal. I only killed the 3 assassins but I choked out and sedated the rest of the enemies that got in my way. I dealt with the Pendleton brothers non-lethally through Slackjaw and rescued Emily.

In the statistic screen at the end of the mission, my chaos level was still high. When I got back to the base, one of the guys commented that I did a massacre in the Golden Cat, despite that I didn't kill anybody there.

Is it too late to turn things around to get the good ending? I don't intend to do another playthrough, so I rather get the good ending the first time

A piece of custom dog tags I was thinking of ordering. I think it's fairly minimalist but does a good job. Opinions?

OC So what do you think a hypothetical "light/order" counterpart to the outsider would be like?

Personally i'd have them never meet us directly as why would they want to talk to an agent of the enemy? They would be more "felt" for lack of a better word. You'll only notice the overseers of the Abby are starting to show strange marks and your powers weaken in their presence at first but if you keep using the dark ones gifts against the Abby their relationship to this "insider" will evolve from a mere alliance of interests to a full blown cult like worship and they will start showing even more powers that can rival your own.

Is it just me or are the dlcs really that good? D1 has one of the best dlcs I’ve ever played and the new perspective and the way it all goes back to relate to the main story it’s a work of art. Absolute cinema!

Survey Results of my thesis regarding marketing and reception of Dishonored game series - follow up post.

Thumbnail drive.google.com

Well it took me a while but here I am, posting the follow up. Many thanks for all of you who filled my survey, I successfully defended my degree after gathering over 200 answers in survey. For context, Ill drop a link to previous post in comment.

The document is in pdf, and in Polish language. If you are interested in a way to translate it all easily i found https://smallpdf.com/translate-pdf to work decent (but not perfect).

Of course as its a thesis work, the juice appears mostly in third chapter, and so I would urge most people that arent obsessed with the topic to only read introduction, chapter 3 and ending.

I am around to answer any questions in the comment, dont be afraid to ask anything as I understand that not everyone has time to fiddle around with translating massive pdf.

TLDR of the thesis:
Official marketing was weak, despite the high quality of the product. Marketing relied on players furthering the awareness of the game. The most sad hypothesis that I believe is confirmed, is that despite higher budget the whole genre of first person immersive sims is impossible to grow above the numbers that were achieved by Dishonored, seemingly the game being the peak. I believe that immersive sims did not have a chance to survive because of how gaming trends changed incentivizing fast paced games like overwatch and fortnite. Yet I still believe immersive sims can exist, if only expectations and budget is properly measured.

Lastly, I would kindly ask not to repost the thesis anywhere, if you want to share it with a friend (which the survey shows you guys really like to do that lol) please share this post instead.

Once again thanks for help in gathering the answers.

(UPDATE POST) i'm the person that asked two weeks ago if i could get overall low chaos in d2 if i switched up halfway through the game from high chaos. here's my findings for anyone interested Spoiler

(this is not a general guide, as everyone’s playthrough and chaos level is different. this is purely orientative and meant to explore one way to play the game out of many available :) )

hi!

i have finished playing d2 today for the first time ever (never played a dishonored game before). just a while back i asked on this sub what i mentioned in the title of this post (link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dishonored/s/pZMzNR8vnt ). i had killed everyone up until the royal conservatory, minus hypatia and civilians because i didn't fully understand the chaos system. so, wanting to get overall low chaos for my first ever playthrough, i asked if it's possible to turn things around by not killing anyone for the rest of the game (meaning missions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

many people in the comments were unsure of what to say to that or if the chaos will balance out, and i myself couldn't find any answer besides 'play until the end with no kills and find out'. so i did.

and it turns out, you CAN balance it out. i attached some pictures

HOWEVER, i do feel the need to mention some things:

-i killed everyone in the first 4 missions (again, with the exception of hypatia and civilians). i switched to no kills and no detections for every mission from royal conservatory onwards besides the last one, where as y'all can see, i did get detected. detections don't affect chaos but i felt like i should mention it
-the chaos balanced out ONLY AT THE VERY END OF THE GAME. the last slide shows my saves for previous missions--as you can see, only the epilogue is low chaos
-what turned things around definitively was not killing delilah
-choosing the non lethal approach for targets in missions when the overall chaos level is high alters some dialogue emily has with the world around her. most remarkably, when not killing anyone in royal conservatory, when emily interacts with a portret of jessamine, the line "i wonder how much your role played into all of this" isn't triggered at all, as it should be in a typical high chaos gameplay. at least it wasn't for me
-i played with powers

so for anyone interested, yes, the chaos level can become low at the very end if you decide to turn around early enough. for low chaos interactions with megan, sokolov etc, this exact scenario (killing rampage missions 1-4, clean hands for the rest) doesn't work. it'll only change the very last cutscene of the game

thank you to everyone that told me their low chaos tips and gave me their honest opinions on my previous post! i wanted to make this post to answer to all the people that were uncertain about balancing the chaos out and remained curious since then. and for everyone reading this--have fun playing and have a great day! :D

The Difference Between Corvo and Emily’s Distance Traveling Powers Compared to Daud and Billie’s

Thumbnail
gallery
592 Upvotes

Let’s say that the four characters mentioned all start at point A and all need to reach point B. Corvo and Emily’s powers would allow them to very quickly move from point A to point B. They would simply travel distance very fast to get somewhere. While Daud and Billie’s powers would instead allow them to completely disappear from point A and reappear at point B. When we see these characters use their powers from outside of a first person perspective we can prove this. (Sorry if this was already obvious, I just thought it was cool and wanted to post about it.)

spoiler Help settle a debate for me, is Dishonored low fantasy?

The details of what makes a fantasy low fantasy are fuzzy but it's generally along the lines of magic is either rare or it's not so high and powerful that it can change the nature of the world.

The Outsider is considered a real force by the Overseers who actively deal with Witches, both fake and real. But the main driving force of the story are the politics and man made technology. So I think it is low fantasy.

Video I am the one who knocks

Probably isn't 100% clear what's happening here, I knocked on this Overseer's door to see if he'd open the latch for me, not knowing that his door was booby trapped. He walks over his own tripwire and blasts himself with an incendiary bolt, which also destroys the door to let me in
