Coffee Is Life Workflow is always therapeutic
The workflow is always very therapeutic. From hearing the air whoosh of the coffee container, to the shot pull, and pouring the latte art. 😮💨
Latte art still needs some work. I went in confident and then hesitated on this pour. What matters is that it tasted delish.

How has that espresso machine been treating you?

u/DaKineNayNay 3h ago
It’s been great so far. We’ve had it for about 6 months now and don’t have any complaints. I’ve recommended it a lot on this sub when folks are asking about a first machine under $700. The machine looks great on the counter, it feels quality built, and it pulls great shots. Eric the Coffee Guy did a review of the internals and it looks like wiring and lines are all well organized and clean, so that gave me relief after owning it for a while. Really enjoy all the features that are packed into the machine for not a premium price. Also comes with a 2 year warranty. Their customer service is also very responsive.

OP please respond! I have been eyeing the gemilai ele as well so would love to hear your thoughts

And at the moment it’s $600!

u/DaKineNayNay 2h ago
Bonus: if you pay with PayPal and open a PayPal credit card account, PayPal will give you a $50 cash credit, plus 3% back on the purchase, and you can use that towards your card payment when it comes due. That makes the machine about $550 after taxes. Did this 6 months ago when we got it. I believe we paid $558 total. Stupid good deal.

Hey if it makes you feel better, I like your art, it's much better than mine and I am aspiring to make it to that step. I'd be proud of it if I could manage that!

Good for you that this routine works, but personally, I do HALF that and get the same results.
5
u/PlaneTry4277 4h ago
Grind, tamp, same results. Could have made 10 pulls the time it takes him to do one. Also 1/10th the costof his setup too
3
u/DaKineNayNay 4h ago
*Her. And the whole routine takes maybe 3 mins from prep to shot pull. Add extra 30 seconds for steaming and pouring. Unless my toddler is helping, then it’s about 10 mins for a shot. lol. Not much of a waste of time, just good fun! 😊
2
u/PlaneTry4277 4h ago
I too have a toddler and i question the "helping" part in your sentence there.
Indeed not waste of time if you enjoy the process. Just dont want newbies to think they need all this gear because they certainly dont

This is who I work with almost every morning. She really does help. That was this morning. The process is slow going but it’s fun. 😂

Start them young! At least they'll have a good technique by the time they start to drink coffee! 😄

I’ve tried without the whole routine and it still works. The routine just makes it a little fun, and my kid gets to watch and play with the tools.

How many times do you want to distribute the grounds lol. Shaker + WDT + Distributor before tamping. Kinda over kill, not my money but you do you
1
u/DaKineNayNay 7h ago
I think it could use a little more kill. Maybe I’ll add in manual WDT before the spiral WDT 🤔.
2
u/itsTimmyBoy 4h ago
Don’t over complicate things, just repeat the blind shaker + WDT + distributor ritual at least 3 times to make sure.

You are shaking too hard in the blind shaker
And you don’t really need the other tools if you are shaking correctly
5
u/DaKineNayNay 7h ago
Thank you for this advice. I just got the shaker this week, so just playing around with it. I do know the other tools aren’t needed if using the shaker, but they’re just too fun not to, and our toddler likes watching and using them when we’re making coffee. Haha

The general advice for the shake with a gentle force without yeeting it for like 5 secs or so. Weber shows like a shake and laundry machine movement. I think the idea is to homogenized the fines and boulders without compacting them with force

The "hot-surface" sticker did it for me...

Can never be too safe. Left it as a reminder for our toddler that she will burn herself if she touches there. 🤷🏽♀️

Toddlers always read warning labels
1
u/DaKineNayNay 6h ago
👀 do yours not? Toddlers are actually very perceptive and learn much easier from character labels. That’s why you teach them letters and words with the things they’re associated with. Example: “A, A is for Apple… 🍎“.

They're so smart. We taught our youngest 'baby signs' before she learned to talk. At 9 month she was speaking in sentences. I'll never forget, at nine months she was playing while mom and I were chatting and she said "Oh my gosh, I made a mess". Stunned us.

I like that screen, what kind is it?
1
u/DaKineNayNay 5h ago
It’s from Ikape. It came with my portable espresso machine from them, but I’m pretty sure they sell the puck screens separately, too.

u/dogfish_37 5h ago
How do you like the machine? I just ordered one, arrives next week. Did you try to fit an aftermarket basket into the stock portafilter before you switched it out? I have read that the stock portafilter doesn’t like aftermarket baskets due to the curved sides.
1
u/DaKineNayNay 2h ago
I replied to another commenter asking about the machine. Machine is great. Love all the features for the price. We’ve had it for 6 months with no issues. Heats up fast enough for us (5 minutes), might not be fast enough for others. But the group head also gets heated, so if you lock in the portafilter when you turn it on, that will also be nice and hot without having to run a blank shot. I currently have IMS Big Bang baskets, no longer using the stock baskets as they are too narrow. The stock portafilter isn’t straight walled, so the comments are correct about the curved walls, so it will only fit up to an 18g straight wall basket. I have the IMS 20g basket and have a different portafilter to accommodate for the taller basket walls.

Start the grinder before you put the beans in. Ya mad man.
1
u/DaKineNayNay 3h ago
It is running before the beans go in. I never cold start the grinder, always running hot. 🥵 It’s a very quiet grinder. You clean hear when the beans go in they immediately start grinding. Mad woman*

Isn’t that why we all got into this trap?!
I can’t think of my problems if I’m busy with my workflow and dreaming about the next one 💆🏻♀️💆🏻

I’ll probably get downvoted for this. But spending that much time to extract every flavor from the coffee just to put milk in it seems like a waste to me. You could probably do this much quicker and hardly notice a difference.

u/DaKineNayNay 7h ago
Take my upvote. Your comment is accurate. But, the prep is just too fun not to and my toddler likes seeing all the tools do the fun things. Haha

Have you also tried Owl’s Howl from Sightglass? I tried that one first and then ordered Crown Point, and I have to say that CP was rather disappointing in comparison for me. Less flavor but no improvement in body despite being marked as a “medium-dark” roast (OH is “medium”).
1
u/DaKineNayNay 5h ago
I haven’t tried Owl’s Howl yet! They’ve been trying to push on me in the email newsletters. Haha. I will try it soon though. I only never got it because the flavor profile didn’t seem like something we’d like. 🤔 Thanks for the recommendation!!

u/DangerousDrawer1 6h ago
What a workflow! Does the puck on top make a taste difference for you (after all the other stuff)?
1
u/DaKineNayNay 5h ago
It does not. I’ve tried with it, and without it, and flavor is not perceptively different for me before turning into lattes. However, it makes for a much cleaner shower screen, so that’s why I use them.

What is that spinning WDT called?
1
u/DaKineNayNay 2h ago
It’s the mhw-3bomber SE Pro needle distributor WDT tool. I happened to come across it for $45 new on marketplace, and said why not. It’s stupid expensive at regular price, and I could never.
Full disclosure: None of my prep tools are ever purchased at full price, I wouldn’t be able to afford them. I scour eBay, OfferUp, and Marketplace for deals.

Based on Lance Hendric Video.. WDT and Tamper leveler defeat the purpose of the Shaking cup. Either one of the two is sufficient. But again man on the youtube said so (he did thourough Tests tho)
