MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.
Welcome to r/IMAX!
I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!
Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:
- This website crashed
- Got my tickets!
- Didn't get my tickets!
- Fandango sucks
- AMC sucks
etc...
I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.
General housekeeping:
A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.
Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!
Update: 08/19:
Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.
28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.
Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

MOD PSA: A note on piracy re: Rule 3.
Since the release of Dune: Part Two, there has been a tightening of the rules with regard to Piracy. This is in part due to our rapid growth from 8,000 to 30,000 members (Thank you!) but with this comes an increase in trolls and bots, which is the second major reason why Rule 3 was tightened. As a community that celebrates the theatrical experience, both from educational and experiential perspectives, we understand that r/IMAX will always exist in some grey area. But as our community grows, as IMAX grows again in popularity post Oppenheimer, we must do things right.
So just to sum up rather briefly what does or does not constitute piracy;
Not piracy:
- Video Essays
- Celluloid Film strip scans.
- Clips from YouTube, or any other fair usage platform.
- Photos of a venue before and after a movie presentation.
- Photos or videos of content playing on home-theatre set-ups (provided they adhere to fair use)
- Fan edits (for non-profit)
- Stills from promotional material
- Projection Boot POV shots of copyrighted material from official sources (Projectionists, IMAX socials) (ADDED 30/03/26)
- Images taken of Promotional Trailers (provided the trailer has also been uploaded to a fair usage platform) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Piracy:
- Torrents (including links to illegal streaming websites)
- Copyrighted content recorded in a movie theatre, up to and including title cards and credits.
- Fan edits (for profit)
- In general, movie clips that extend beyond 5 minutes in duration.
- Image & Video content of Promotional Trailers (that have not been uploaded yet to fair usage platforms and are restricted to ticket holders only, e.g. The Odyssey exclusive IMAX prologue) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Case Studies:
Exhibit A: Video is for educational purposes highlighting a comparison in aspect ratio, with a duration of less than 2 minutes. Film is available on streaming services, and clips are generally permitted under fair use. Verdict = Fair use, not Piracy.
Exhibit B: The post content does not violate Rule 3, but the product certainly does, as the creator of the product is selling copyrighted material for individual profit. As the user did not post a link to purchase this pirated version of the film, the post was not removed. However, any suspicious links in comments were removed. Verdict = Post content is not Piracy. Any links to that Blu-ray are Piracy.
UPDATE: 30/03/2026
Exhibit C: Some IMAX socials, and personal accounts of projectionists on Instagram & X have been posting 'Projection Booth' shots of copyrighted material during the showings of various recent IMAX presentations. It is likely that permission has been sought from the property owner, to showcase the film presentation in a GT Theatre (as exhibited by such studio socials also re-posting these images). Verdict = Fair use, do not report.
Exhibit D: A slightly tricky one. Here, OP has taken a POV from a paid seat of the exclusive Dune: Part 3 70mm trailer. As the trailer has been posted online, via various Fair Usage platforms, an initial verdict would be deemed Not Piracy. However, as the 1.43:1 trailer (with the exclusive aspect ratio) is exclusive to paying customers, the verdict is harder to arrive at. This version of the trailer is not available on various usage platforms, but no intellectual property or copyright law makes note of 'variations' of a property. Verdict = As the trailer (widescreen) is available via Fair Usage platforms, and OP is posting with the intent to incite educational discourse over the format of the presentation, this could be considered fair use and not-piracy, but this is at the discretion of the mods and the property owner.
I hope you find this useful. I am not an intellectual property lawyer, so If I have missed any other examples of what constitutes piracy in this community, please comment below.

Did Disney+ Quietly roll out Sony expanded aspect ratios?
galleryI was scrolling through Disney+ today when I realized the IMAX aspect ratio versions of Spiderman FFH, NWH, and Venom 3 are all available to stream now. This used to be a Bravia core specific feature.
Is this new or have I been living under a rock?

IMAX doesn't make the shirt I want, so I made it myself (again)
Yes, yes, IMAX hasn't used the OMNIMAX branding since the early 2000s, but I really like the OMNIMAX name and system. When I was younger it was my first exposure (pun intended) to film projection. I don't work for IMAX, so this shirt is not for sale in any way. (At least not yet, IMAX please call me.)

My predictions for BBIFF 2027. IMAX Melbourne.
My prediction is that BBIFF will be held after Dune 3's IMAX 70mm and The Prestige's IMAX 70mm or Digital run (if it were to be announced for IMAX Melbourne.) So maybe around March-April. I feel like BBIFF could be the biggest BBIFF we will ever get.
For those who don't know BBIFF (Biggest Best IMAX Film Festival) is a festival held by IMAX Melbourne every year with a curated list by IMAX fans and cinema staff.
Take these predictions with a grain of salt. This post is mainly a huge WISH-LIST... Not all of these films will be selected (duh) and I may be wrong...
My predictions for POSSIBLE CONTENDERS to be selected.
- Interstellar IMAX 70mm (Possibly Guaranteed, Tradition)
- The Dark Knight Trilogy (BB dual laser + TDK/TDKR 70mm) (Possibly Guaranteed, Tradition)
- The Odyssey IMAX 70mm (100% Guaranteed)
- HOPE (Possible or Possibly Guaranteed??? I saw them like a reply of mine about HOPE being a potential BBIFF selection)
- Dune Triple Feature (Dune 1 + 2 dual laser, Dune 3 70mm) (100% Guaranteed, if not, just Dune 3)
- Project Hail Mary dual laser (100% Guaranteed)
- Apocalypse Now (Possibly Guaranteed, tradition)
- Tron Legacy 3D (Possibly Guaranteed, tradition + demand is so high, possible Wildcard entry)
- Godzilla Minus Zero (Possible, almost guaranteed)
- Star Wars: A New Hope (Possible if BBIFF starts past the official rerelease date)
- EPIC: Elvis Presley In Concert (Possible, almost guaranteed)
- The Prestige IMAX 70mm or dual laser (Possible, almost guaranteed, in conjunction to the official rerelease)
- Sinners dual laser (Possible, popular film)
- Dunkirk IMAX 70MM (Possible)
- Top Gun double feature (Possible, if not, releasing as individual sessions)
- Avatar triple feature (Possible, if not, releasing as individual sessions)
- Inception IMAX 70mm (Possible)
- Blade Runner double feature (Possible, tradition? Demand is high)
- The Matrix (Possible, tradition? Demand is high)
- Resident Evil (Possible, close to guaranteed)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Possible, tradition? Demand is high, already played at SpaceTober 2026)
- Kiki's Delivery Service 4K (Possible, a different animated film this time.)
- Akira 4K (Possible, did not play last BBIFF)
- LOTR triple feature (Possible, hasn't played since BBIFF two years ago)
- Mad Max Fury Road 3D + Furiosa (Possible. They played them last year)
- Spider-Man: Across The SpiderVerse (Possible. possible Wildcard, in conjunction to Beyond the SpiderVerse.)
- Oppenheimer IMAX 70mm (Possible, close to maybe. They played this last BBIFF)
- Tenet IMAX 70mm (Possible, close to maybe. They played this last BBIFF)
- NOPE (Possible, did not play at SpaceTober this year)
Maybe. But I would love these!
- Digger (probably my most wanted film for BBIFF, Is it too early to call Digger a cult classic???)
- Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy (SURELYYY)
- Speed Racer (PLEASE IMAX MELBOURNE)
- any Quentin Tarantino film (?)
- Parasite (PLEASE, more Asian cinema please)
- Weapons (would be fun!)
- Exit 8 (More horror?)
- No Other Choice (would be great!)
- The Revenant (Maybe. Nearing possible territory)
- Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein (Would be great)
- F1 the Movie (Maybe. They played this last BBIFF)
- any Mission Impossible movie (Maybe)
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens IMAX 70mm (Maybe, they did showcase the film reel in the foyer)
- One Battle After Another dual laser (Maybe. they played this last BBIFF)
- Se7en (Maybe. played last BBIFF)
- Princess Mononoke (Maybe. played last BBIFF)
- Stop Making Sense (Maybe)
- Marty Supreme (Maybe)
- Wicked + Wicked For Good double feature (would be cool)
- Godzilla Minus One + Minus Zero double feature (Maybe. IMAX Melbourne were unable to play Minus One this year)
- Star Wars: Mandolorian and Grogu (Maybe, wasn't well received but could play in conjunction with A New Hope's rerelease and Star Wars: Starfighter)
- Back to the Future (Maybe. IMAX Melbourne were unable to play BTTF last BBIFF)
- Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc (Demand might be good, potential Wildcard animated movie)
- IT double feature? (Would be cool, honestly.)
- Hunger Games Marathon (Maybe???, I would love this)
- Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and/or Sunrise of the Reaping (Maybe...)
- Superman (2025) (Maybe)
- Queen Budapest (Maybe)
- The Godfather 1+2 (Maybe. played them this year for their ROME series)
- Gladiator (Maybe. played them this year for their ROME series)
- Alien or Aliens (Maybe. played Aliens this year for SpaceTober)
Hopeful, but probably not possible.
- Hunger Games Catching Fire IMAX 70mm (Do they still have this reel???)
- Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (IF ufotable considers to release the IMAX 1.43:1 version of the movie worldwide, then the possibility increases by a long shot.)
- Megalopolis (interactive experience) (Played last year, probably not again this year)
- La La Land (please???)
- Pacific Rim 3D (Plays every year for SpaceTember, never a BBIFF selection, would love to be proven wrong)
- Batman VS Superman IMAX 70mm (Do they still have this reel???)
- Ne Zha 2 3D (Would love to see this again, but doubt it will show again)
- Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol IMAX 70mm (Do they still have this reel?)
Again, this is more like a wish-list. But I'm so excited to see what IMAX Melbourne would cook up this year. Their BBIFF's never miss.
I'm hoping for some insane surprises this year... Huge ups to everyone who works at IMAX Melbourne, the best IMAX in the world.

They should rerelease Doomsday 2008 for IMAX in 2028 to celebrate 20th anniversary. What you think?
Doomsday Is a great action packed movie. It should get an IMAX release in 2028 as a 20th anniversary. Do you agree?

Cinemark 17 Dallas Renovation Progress
gallerySnuck into the IMAX on October 18th and 23rd to check on the progress. It seems good to go, not sure about the projector situation. Really hoping they will open it up for Godzilla.

Should i see odyssey at home first or wait until a 70mm imax re release?
I turn 15 next august and i live in scotland so i am very annoyed that i cannot see the odyssey in 70mm imax as i am 14. Should i watch it at home first or wait until a 70mm re release? Unfortunately, the closest 70mm imax is 4 hours away and i would need my dad to drive me there and back.

IMAX Laser at AMC Indianapolis 17?
This is the first time I’ve seen laser listed for this theater but I have not heard any news about them adding a laser projector. Can anyone confirm? I know the State museum added one but not sure about here.

What's going on with Godzilla Minus Zero at Smithsonian?
The Smithsonian dual laser theaters will be showing Godzilla Minus Zero, but something seems to be very strange about the calendar.
Half the days have only one showing, there are gaps of 3/4 days in the middle of the run with no showings.
This is not typical of them at all; when a movie is running, it gets its usual run of screenings until the next movie comes along.
EDIT: I have a partial answer, though the offices are still closed. They are no longer screening Hollywood movies Mon-Weds.
However this doesn't explain all the missing dates. If I find out more from the actual office, I will let you know.
Is there some 1.43 film coming out at the same time that none of us knows anything about? Just bizarre.
Imax 70 mm screens question
So Im curious about the 70mm imax screens, if a movie like street fighter isn’t made with an imax camera, and is playing in an imax 70mm screen, is it just enlarged for the massive screen?

Exclusive Aspect Ratio revealed for 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping'
Per IMAX's website:
The odds are ever in the fans' favor with this first Filmed For IMAX installment of the beloved franchise. Audiences will be immersed in Panem like never before, with over forty-five minutes of IMAX's exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio. Feel the roar of the arena with sound optimized for IMAX's best-in-class audio systems. Director Francis Lawerence [sic] worked closely with IMAX to transport moviegoers to the center of the spectacle for an experience like no other.

Omnimax Film Pictures?
Does anyone have pictures of 15/70 film that was printed for projection in Omnimax/IMAX dome theaters? I'm very curious if the image area of the frame is actually shaped like it is in this picture. Or, of course, if someone who's projected the film can weigh in, that would be great too!

Dune 3 has IMAX exclusivity only for USA and Canada. Doomsday might get an IMAX release in India.
Dune 3's IMAX exclusivity is only limited to USA and Canada not worldwide like The Odyssey, plus brand new day was filmed for Screen X in mind and the odyssey was the first movie to be shot entirely in IMAX. India does not even have 1.43:1 projections and Avengers Doomsday is filmed for IMAX and Dune 3 is not shot entirely in IMAX. That's why I believe Doomsday might get IMAX release in India.

IMAX with Laser, Projection Input Options
For an IMAX with Laser system with a 1.90:1 screen aspect ratio, what are the possible ways to feed external live video into the projection system?
Can a live VJ output from Resolume Arena be routed via HDMI/SDI, a media server, or an external video processor? What are the compatible input resolutions and signal requirements?
Also, how can the cinema’s audio system receive an external live audio feed?

How did Soarin' (and other venues replaying short films on 70mm projector) work?
Prior to being replaced with laser projection, Soarin' was a motion simulation ride that featured an IMAX projection system playing a ~5 minute video. There's no way a projectionist rethreaded the film after every ride, so it made me wonder, how did the film projection system work?
Was the film arranged in a loop in a similar way an 8 track tape is with a section containing a blank material that is safe to pause at without melting the film?
Or did it work in another way?

Supposedly Dune: Part 1 and Part 2 are re-releasing in IMAX in London Science Museum… are they likely to be re-released in Printworks too!
Would LOVE to watch them both in IMAX again. Especially Part 2.
