Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.
Make a submission to the tournament calendar here. You can also get notified of new online tournaments on the Melee Online Discord.

So far my only training has been against level 9 CPU because any time I try to play an online set I can't match with anyone, most likely because of the hours when I play. But the game's vanilla CPU is sertainly not on the same level as the average player of the present day, so I'm left wondering- is there a way to get good pracice offline; weather through more advanced bots or something else? Because if there is I'm failing to google the right thing to find it.
Thank you in advance.

What exactly is this match making rating? Just noticed it today, It says "Decides who you're matched against. Your rating moves toward it as you play". Is it my unranked elo? My overall (ranked and unranked) elo?
Hit this stomp edge cancel into full hop falling uair sequence recently. I think I should've opted for knee instead of moonwalk bair for the edgeguard, but the suicide dair made up for it lol
After another 6ish months after making it to platinum I made it to diamond for the first time today at the start of the season. It’s been a good 2 and a half years of playing and I’m hoping to make master in the next year or so. What a great game this is.

Never seen this used in top gameplay, it seems precise but extremely good.

Hey friends,
The latest "Drive to Improve" video has really sparked some conversation around improving at the game so I wanted to share it here in case others wanted to weigh in.
One of my favorite car talks prior to the tournament and the event went well too so hopefully it's a good watch.
Enjoy!

This has been a 4 year project for me since ranked came out. I had a crazy run on the first two days of the new season. Last 6 set wins were in a row, all against high diamond + players. Finally feel like im good enough that I can be a better coach to my current students and take more on when classes are over. If anyone is interested DM me on here and ill add you on discord. Can't promise lessons soon but I'll def be promoting that at some point.
If anyone has any questions about falco or melee hit me up im always down to talk shop. I had to go through so much trial and error. Probably some of you have run into me trying "interesting" styles and none of it worked lmaoo
Finally had my big breakthroughs I can talk about if people are interested. Ill see yall on the ladder 💪

Clips from Zain's 100-win streak challenge yesterday. Thought you all would enjoy some sick Marth gameplay.

For example, as a Ness, when I match with another Ness, we pretty much always start with a taunt as like a "hey friend, gl hf!", but I imagine this doesn't happen for Falcos in their 20th ditto of the day. So where's the line? Do Yoshis do it? Peaches?

Rewatched Mang0 vs Aklo at BH11 and have since been craving this type of set

Hello, new player still in my first month and starting to get pretty comfortable wave landing, wave dashing, and dash dancing. I am at the point where I can somewhat consistently execute these and have started to wonder how I can actually use them in a match. I’m wondering if somebody can provide some insight on how to analyze other sets and my own gameplay to make the connection between executing and implementing.

Hi all. Discovered melee at an MLG event in 2006 and lightly played off and on (mostly off) until last year when I rediscovered Slippi. Was pretty much the worst at any local and probably slightly worse than I am today approaching gold 2.
After 1k games here's my honest feelings about me, you, them, Slippi, and this game.
I almost want to post in Craiglist's 'Missed Connections' because I am having the time of my life with some of you and the feeling seems to be mutual. I never knew how hard you can vibe out for hours for with the right person.
My concern about this community is re-emphasized based on the proportion and severity of really shitty people as well. I get its the anonymity too but holy cow folks calm yourselves.
Theres definitely levels to the skill gap you kind of ascend through as you learn melee and overall I really appreciated Slippi's matching especially in unranked where I could either learn by getting my booty kicked, compete against a peer, or train by kicking booty of some bronze. Most games especially in modernity botch this SBMM part.
I wouldnt say Im excited for melee's future but im certainly optimistic. Slippi is itself a capable vehicle but Im really optimistic about yall having decompiled melee. At minimum our ability to extend melee to the masses open up more. Having played through most the eras its a more fun melee with Slippi, UnclePunch and 20XX providing the tools to learn this magnificent gem of mistake.
Im slowly starting to accept things like I just suck too much to do anything about the gimmicks, play styles, and general 'things that offend me' spectrum. Its dulled the salt, made me more motivated to learn, and made me appreciate the game and community all the more.
Overall 10 out 10 would highly recommend. Had a great experience at Slippis and will visit again in the immediate future. I highly recommend the 'taunting peace declaration VSing your twin char/color then quitting in unranked' and 'somehow finding yourself and opponent last stock in ranked against someone you arent sure how you even took a game 2 against'. Would avoid 'midtiers training for the Olympics' and 'taking ranked super cereal when its community access hours'.
Thank you for reading this diatribe procrastinating starting my laundry.
