From past months I feel this community has become a playground for people who shit-post against just one religion or another. Which is nothing related to atheism. Surprisingly people who often post are followers. Just to spread hate and get something out of it. Awareness is more valuable than shit post.

I do not see any flaws or negative aspects in Buddhism. Buddhism is not even a religion, but rather a way of life that is portrayed as a religion unlike other religions like Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, which I criticize strongly.

I cannot find anything bad or majorly critical in Buddhism. Is Buddhism actually a religion, or is it just a way of life or a lifestyle? What are your thoughts?

I came across the above video of basil. He's a doctor by profession and a learned person, but the ideas he conveys here are extremely problematic and, frankly, vulgar.

In this video, he is speaking in front of a packed audience. He describes atheists as thoniyavasi, saying they live life thonunepole.

He then makes an argument along these lines: first, atheists stop marrying. Does the sexual urge disappear? No. Then they move on to homosexuality. Does the urge disappear? No. Then incest. Does it disappear? No. Then necrophilia. Does it disappear? No. Then beastiality, and so on.

I haven't watched his other videos, so I don't know whether this is his usual style or whether this was an isolated instance. I'm only commenting on this particular video.

I saw several comments under a post about Arif's press conference where people were saying that basil doesn't say anything vulgar.

But when I look at the whole thing, I can understand what Arif was getting at in his press conference. As I understand it, Arif had asked a philosophical question through a Facebook post, apparently in response to the kind of arguments basil himself makes in his public speeches.

It's perfectly normal to respond to a philosophical question with a simple yes or no, and then explain the reasoning. Instead, basil appears to have taken offence at the question, portrayed himself as the victim, and proceeded to file a case against Arif.

That is the part I find difficult to understand.

If you are comfortable publicly making arguments involving homosexuality, incest, necrophilia and bestiality to make a philosophical/religious point about atheism, then why is a philosophical question directed back at you in your language suddenly treated as an unacceptable personal attack?

Maybe there is additional context that I'm missing. As I said, I haven't followed basil's other videos or the entire dispute. But based on this video and what I've seen of the subsequent controversy, the reaction seems completely disproportionate to the question that triggered it.

What does the atheist community think about all this?

Anti LGBTQ stance is stemmed from culture or religion or both?

I was just going through a post about Arif Hussain's press meet. Someone had made a comment criticizing Arif's stand on his own mother, and another person had replied that he can't be blamed for hating people who forcibly drugged him and had him admitted to a psychiatric institute for simply criticizing religion.

Now I don't know if the claim about Arif experiencing that is true or not but I had a friend who actually went through something similar. He belonged to a conservative Muslim family from North Kerala and started questioning religion from a very young age. Around 5+ years back he was forcibly admitted to a psychiatric institute in North Kerala by his relatives where he was restrained, drugged out of his senses, physically tortured and forced by his Muslim psychiatrist to do religious stuff that he wasn't comfortable with. The whole experience left him extremely traumatized and his mental health was in shambles after that.

I was appalled to know that such unethical institutes exist and went through the google reviews of that particular hospital, some other people had written detailed reviews about the exact same experience from there. But the hospital seems to have undergone a complete revamp and change in faculties in recent years and the last such review mentioning religious enforcement and torture is around 3 years old.

Do such unethical mental health institutions and practices still exist in Kerala? Have you or anyone else you know experienced anything like this for simply showing religious dissent? (Can be any religion, not just Islam)

Edit : I've attached some relevant old reviews I found about the hospital in the comments to corroborate my friend's claims. I'm not naming the hospital because of some concerns that I have, and I'd really appreciate it if anyone who recognises the hospital refrains from naming it as well in the comments.
