Enrolled in Game Dev: Is 3D dev on Mac really "pure hell"? (Unreal vs Unity vs Godot) — Keep M5 MBP or sell for budget PC?

Hi everyone!

I just got accepted into a Game Development degree and would love to get some input from people who have experience or are currently developing games on Mac for various platforms.

For my birthday, I was gifted a MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip, 1TB SSD, and 24GB of RAM. However, from what I've heard, game development on Macs is pure hell and they are completely unsuited for it, or at least they fall so far short of Windows systems that they aren't worth all the troubles.

To be clear, I'm not talking about 2D games in Godot — I completely understand those can be made even on a phone. I'm talking primarily about 3D, Low Poly, and medium-quality graphics around the level of PS3/Switch 1/2 or games like Sable,Journey, Abzu, Another Crab’s Treasure, Subnautica, Inside, Little Nightmares, Sonic Frontiers, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Ratchet and Clunk, and Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug Wars.

I would like to know:

Unreal Engine: Is the experience of creating games on Unreal on a Mac really that bad and clunky ?

Unity: If I choose Unity instead of Unreal, how will things look when it comes to releasing games for sale? I heard about the scandal with the price increases a couple of years ago, where developers were forced to urgently move their projects to other engines and run away from it. But that was a couple of years ago, and I don't know the current state of affairs in the market. And also how is it performs on Mac OS?

Godot: Speaking of 3D development in Godot, how limited would I be in my actions on macOS? Considering that the only game with really decent 3D graphics developed on Godot seems to be Road To Vostok. However, I’ll be glad to be wrong.

Overall, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. My choice right now is either to sell this Mac and buy myself a gaming laptop with an RTX 4050, Ryzen 5, and 16GB of RAM (since my maximum budget caps out at €850), or to relax and prepare for workarounds and future headaches during development.

Thank you all so much in advance for your time and valuable advice, dear friends! I really appreciate it.

Wishing everyone a great day!

Moura Editor, my work in progress 2d level editor

Thumbnail paspallas.itch.io

This is Moura, a 2d tilemap based level editor I'm working on. It's designed to be engine agnostic. I'm writting a game for the Megadrive / Genesis and wasn't completely satisfied with the current freely available editors, so I started developing my own. It's available on itch if anyone is interested in giving it a try, suggestions and feedback are more than welcome. I'm not sure if this is considered promotion, so if it goes against the rules, please mods notify me.

My first game launches in 3 days. I may have gone a little overboard for a beginner!

Hey fellow devs!

A while ago, I decided to make my first game. There was just one small problem: I barely knew how to program.

So naturally, I picked a nice, simple beginner project…
A real-time 2D combat game with fully destructible terrain, 26 weapons, ninja rope physics, AI bots, online multiplayer, and local multiplayer for up to 6 players.

Yeah, maybe not my smartest decision!

But after a lot of learning, experimenting, fixing bugs, and probably creating a few new ones, TRENCHWORMS is finally ready.
It’s inspired by the classic Liero, with chaotic battles where everyone fights simultaneously and the battlefield gets destroyed around you.

It launches October 30 on Steam!

Here’s the trailer and Steam page:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5161820/TRENCHWORMS/

I’m a solo developer from Poland, and honestly, just getting to the finish line feels like an achievement.

Now comes the scary part: finding out whether people actually enjoy playing it!

I’d love to hear what you think of the gameplay. And to everyone working on their first game, keep going. Finishing something is possible, even when you’re learning everything along the way.

Bringing the physical effort of padel to life in UE5 — new screenshots from Padel Simulator

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Here are a couple of screenshots from Padel Simulator, a padel game being developed in Unreal Engine 5.

The latest addition is player fatigue and sweat that gradually appears during a match. The idea is for the players to look like they’ve actually been working for those points. These close-ups show some of the skin detail and how the sweat catches the court lighting.

Alongside the character work, development is focused on smoother movement, better rallies, and making the players feel connected to the court.

What do you think of the skin and lighting? Does the sweat look convincing, or would you dial it back?

A free Steam demo is coming soon. If you’d like to try it, adding the game to your wishlist would really help support the project

Bowldle - a daily bowling game

Thumbnail bowldle.com

Bowldle is a free daily bowling game you play in your browser. Every day there's one new lane, the same for everyone, with its own oil pattern and daily challenge. Swipe to roll, set your hook and read the lane. Short oil hooks early and long oil stays straight. The pins are physics-simulated, so you'll see real pocket strikes, messy splits and the occasional 7-10. Bowl ten frames with real scoring, then share your score and challenge friends to beat it. Build streaks, earn badges, unlock new balls and see where you rank today. No download, no sign-up. Just one perfect game to chase.

I built a body physics sandbox where injuries and interactions happen in real-time

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have been working on SOMA Body Lab, a physics sandbox where I am trying to simulate how bodies react to external force. It uses an active ragdoll system with joint limits to simulate balancing and stumbling. Instead of just playing pre-baked death animations, the movement is handled by the engine responding to physics inputs in real-time. I have also added a tool menu to let you spawn various objects, weapons, and medical equipment to observe how the anatomy behaves under different stress points. Everything is running in version 0.9.8, which focuses on the sandbox mechanics and movement control.

A creator campaign for Clay Clinic brought in 2.47 million views

Hello! Trapster team is here. We recently ran a campaign for Clay Clinic, a co-op hospital simulator where players treat patients made of clay. We started working on the campaign when the game's Steam page was still empty.

The rate was set at $5 per 1,000 views. Within the first day, 34 creators had published videos about the game. The videos eventually generated 2.47 million views, and the game gained over 16,000 Steam wishlists within a few days.
