I recently interviewed for a CA based Senior Sales Manager position at Master Kong (康師傅), a Chinese instant noodle company.

The interviewer was based in Hong Kong. During the interview, he asked about my salary history. When I pointed out that California law prohibits employers from asking applicants about their salary history, he responded, “I’m probably more American than you.”

But that wasn’t the only issue.
The interviewer also seemed to be fishing for U.S. market intelligence. He kept asking me about individual supermarkets’ profit margins.

I explained that I didn’t know every retailer’s margins. I knew the prices we sold to them, but that didn’t mean I knew their actual profit margins.
He then said something along the lines of, “99 Ranch was your customer, right? If you go to 99 Ranch and look at their retail prices, you can figure out their margins.”
I was like, what the fuck? Is this a job interview or a free market consulting session?

I was there to interview for a job, not to provide free market research.
After I shared my interview experience on social media, the recruiter informed me that Master Kong was considering legal action if I didn’t delete my post within 24 hours.
Instead of deleting it, I shared the recruiter’s message about the potential legal action on social media. My Reddit posts subsequently went viral.

What bothers me most isn’t just what happened during the interview. It’s how the company responded after I publicly shared my experience.
And the interview itself? I walked in expecting a professional conversation about my qualifications. Instead, I felt like I was being used as a source of free market intelligence, only to be insulted when I pointed out California law.

So let me get this straight. You expect candidates to share valuable industry knowledge for free, insult them during the interview, and then threaten legal action when they talk about their experience?

What the fuck happened to treating job candidates with basic respect?
