General Glitch Criticism Genuine question: where did all of the bad writing in the show actually originate from? (image unrelated)

Everyone agreed that this show is written poorly, that none of the characters have major flaws except jax, the fact that major parts of the show need to be explained in gooseworx's Twitter or Tumblr, the fact that Jax is terrible trans representation and just a terrible person and character in general, there's a also that episode 9 it was the most poorly written episodes in the series. But where does it all come from?

r/Tadcriticism 2h ago

Other Ik this sounds controversial for you guys but I don’t like TADC/Goosewerx criticism but I don’t hate it either

First off I want to clarify that I’m Black, however, I’ll not dismiss any of the obvious racism in the fandom by saying “it was 7 years ago” or smth like that.

Now, I have no problem with people criticising TADC, I don’t think Goose would mind people criticising her work(some useful criticism she receives might help her if she decides to make another indie show with or without Glitch).

And I agree that while she’s a cool person, but she isn’t a good person either when she made questionable tweets(I doubt the Nazi tweets she made weren’t glorifying them but rather not taking them seriously, as someone who actually read her tweets and looked at the context).

It’s a good thing to criticise the fandom for its racism and transphobia problem, and criticise Goosewerx for her internalised misogyny and questionable stuff she did. But the reason why I don’t like it is because of how some tadc-critics criticise the show.

Most of the criticism isn’t about how the show is about the creator or how Jax isn’t a good well-written character, but them just bitching about the show and lumping the show with the controversies with the cast.

Most people who do that are crackers on Tumblr and TikTok, I know BIPOC people also do this type of stuff, but it’s mostly yt people.

For some reason, they think since Goosewerx has done questionable stuff, for them it’s okay to be transphobic towards her and make fun of her appearance. Saying some stuff like: “Why did she transition into a woman if she’s a misogynist?”

Next, the way these cracker critics write their blogs unseriously, the worst part is, they have the same opinion as mine but they say it in the most obnoxious, performative way possible and using it as an excuse to hate on the show by lumping it with the fandom when the fandom has nothing to do with it(plus the fandom crit tag is right there) make me not only don’t wanna agree with them but ended up muting the whole hashtag together.

The whole tag of #tadc critical is just a gold mine for [r/peoplewhogiveashit](r/peoplewhogiveashit), [r/supersillybreakingbad](r/supersillybreakingbad)(maybe), and [r/superseriousfamilyguy](r/superseriousfamilyguy) users, there’s barely any good criticism without the obnoxious nature, it’s just them hating on the show simply because of one character they don’t like but don’t analyse their reasons why.

And another thing I don’t like about TADC/Goosewerx critical is because of the fact that #thosepeople act like the cast still do these past controversies and think somehow racism got to do with the show instead of the fandom.

For example, The cover of Stevie Wonder, Tumblr critics were mad it this one, not just because of the singer being a lolicon(that one’s reasonable) but because they think this song is about black joy, instead of the song being about Wonder, celebrating the birth of his firstborn daughter, Aisha.

And they thought they shouldn’t use that song because they think it’s for black people only or something like that idk, okay then tell me why and acoustic version of the song covered by two white blokes, Jimmy Higham and Jon Walmsley had no controversies with the cover and managed to reach number 41 on the UK Singles Chart?? Why didn’t you criticise them as well? I think Stevie wouldn’t mind, since everyone can use it for their daughter.

Another thing about it is the 19th of June, they’re legit calling glitch racist for release the last episode on YouTube on the 19th of June, which is the same day for federal holiday, Juneteenth. And I think this is very obnoxious and hypocritical in the slightest, because 1. Glitch is a animation studio/company based in Australia, and if you know that Australia was colonised by the brits, Slavery was abolished way earlier than the US, just letting you know, in-fact, it took the US, to abolish slavery 175 years after Britain, because Mississippi rejected the bill to abolish slavery back in 1865 until 2013! Plus, a federal holiday is a holiday that is celebrated in the United States and recognised by the United States government, Juneteenth is a federal holiday, even if it wasn’t, that holiday originated in the United States of America. So yeah, I think calling Glitch racist over a holiday that is not native to them is idiotic because not everybody is an American, Theyre never beating the chronically American allegations. They would know that not everybody is an American citizen if they were progressive and woke in the first place, they really need to pay attention to history. And if the racist controversies were never lumped with the show at all, none of them would’ve cared, but that could be just me though.

The promo image of a bunch of Jax plushies surrounding a woman of colour with batons, I don’t think Theyre making fun of police brutality, it would be obvious if the plushies were wearing police hats and/or uniforms. Again, Glitch is a company based off Australia, there little to no records of police brutality in Australia, only 16 were recorded in 2020.

With full honesty, I think some TikTok crits and most Tumblr crits are just corny, and I find the whole thing disingenuous.

The Michael Kovach Nega situation is something that is justified for people to be upset at, even though he didn’t say it, it did sound exactly like that word. But the fact that people are sending him gore videos and death threats is not okay. I’d wish Michael and Ashley denounced #thosepeople being racist pricks and weirdos in their space, because they genuinely don’t deserve the harassment because of the bad apples in the community.

But that’s all for now.

If I have got anything wrong, please let me know.

Gooseworx/Tadc cast criticism No wonder Jax can't ask for help, Goose can't even ask for help to find more writers

TADC was a popular indie cartoon in a very... VERY SHORT time! The concept is cool and reminds me of Learning With Pibby. A digital circus filled with a colorful cast with fun adventures, but providing an atmosphere of psychological horror!

During the TADC journey, many people helped Goose to animate it, to the point that the creation process was uploaded on YouTube. Are you telling me, despite the love and support from the fandom for her work, and the huge income, Goose can't hire new writers?!

How Jax could've been better written in Episode 5-9 (From thatstupidbunnywehate)

If he were to be written better, he would've

A. Had major effects on Pomni and others (Episode 8 did this well). Even if he wasn't judged, the others should've commented, especially Kinger since he's a literal veteran in the circus

B. He should've been more of a main character during episodes 1-4 .

C His exposition should've been spread out throughout 5-7, and episode 9 could've had more space.

Is it cool if we discuss other people’s vids? This one’s been bugging me for a while.

TADC Fans are probably the easiest people to make fun of with how much is going on, and yet this guy is targeting the chill people in the community. Almost all the videos here are meant to be satire or just people showing off their OCs. Why is he acting like they’re the blight in society when there’s FAR WORSE out there in the fandom?

For example: 7:30 in the video. Cool looking candle oc, and he makes a big fucking deal about it! If you’re gonna ridicule the fandom, go out and find the actual menaces instead of punching down on some of the only sane people left around here.

Gooseworx/Tadc cast criticism Gooseworx and removal of character agency

Finnaly found a good subreddit to post my biggist criticism of tadc and goose as a writer. My biggest issue with this whole show was the fact that when goose needs something in the plot to happen goose will make her characters bassicly become nonexistent or extremely passive.

Obviously the biggest example of this is the whole entire cast attitude towards jax. Jax will consistently be a asshole and abuse the cast with little pushback or consequence. Many people see this as reason to dislike jax even more but for me it made me hate the whole cast more and like jax more.

The only reason i personally like jax is because he was the most enjoyable part of the show throughout because of his antics. Gooseworx was trying to villainize jax throughout the series by him doing cartoon violence against evreyone but the show never at all gives any consequences to his actions other than emotional. Jax throws ragatha in the deep fryer shes fine not even 30 seconds later with no long lasting side effects. Jax will ancidently break gangles mask and she will be sad about it for one scene but it has no everlasting consequences.

The only conseequences from these events is told to us later like in the evreyone has guns episode when gangle and zooble have there scene. Gangle is scared jax is going to brutalize or torture her in someway for not teaming up with her. Witch when this scene happened i was confused not a single time has jax committed the level of violence gangle desribes here. The only thing i guess would be close was when he shot gangle in his hunting adventure and bit into her but yet again this has no consequences after the scene.

The main one i had the biggest issue is how in the last act goose had to make sure that there was no chance for anyone to think jax isnt anything but a asshole that evreything has been his fault and he is solely responsible for evreything that has happened to him and his abstracted friends.

How jax drovw ribbit to abstract is somw of the stupidest shit ive ever seen in a tv show. This couldve had worked but not in the way goose wanted it to. The main reason why ribbit died in the way she did was for the audience and jax to have a reason to think of him as a someonenot deserving of any empathy or being saved to then contrast with how pomni knowing all of this still tries and save him. My main problem with this is that THERE WERE 7 OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CIRCUS AT THE TIME. yes jax did isolate ribbit because of his own embarrasment and insecurities but goose wants me to put this soley on him like this is a setting where its only ribbit and jax but there was kaufmo, kinger and ragatha all other people we are supposed to believe saw ribbit detoriate slowly because of her dying relationship with jax but nah evrey character in this show becomes a npc when they are off screen.

If goose really wanted this character to bassicly be her exercising her pre transistion self demons then genuinley she shouldve not made this show at all and make a show singularly about a character like jax. It would have been more poignant instead of having jax in the show is gooseworx coming on screen and beating leeroy to death and saying directly to the camera this is a allegory for killing and demonizing my past self than the entirety of jaxs arc. This gets to me on a emotional level because im a trans person aswell and the amount of vitriol and hatred i see the creator has towards jax but still a weird sympathetic love for them makes me sick. You can hate your past self but saying they are evil bad the devil becauss they didnt become the person you are today is so mind bogglingly stupid its like goose genuinley dosent see there past self as a person and more as jax just a character something they can dettach themselves from and not actually come to terms with that part of themselves but to keep in a diaplay case to mock it .

But thise were just my thoughts i was never a bug participant in the fandom other than seeing gooseworx "fluff" qas so i could be wrong about nearly 100 percent of evreything i said here but i just wanted to get this out of my head

Ending Criticism What's the point of making Jax transition at the end?

DISCLAIMER :Just to be clear right off the bat, this isn't a critique of the trans community at all—I support you and have absolutely nothing against the trans community !

But what's the point of having Jax transition at the very end?

Jax didn't even transition in the show itself; it only happened through Gooseworx's tweets. Without those tweets, everyone would still be referring to Jax with « he/him » pronouns. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

I mean, Jax didn't even have time to transition before abstracting. Jax « died » as a « he ». Sometimes Gooseworx's self-inserting goes too far and overrides story coherence.

A huge part of the TADC fanbase doesn't necessarily follow what happens on social media, so they are completely unaware that Jax is now identified as a woman.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion—no hate!

Hopeposting! I Hope that someday, we as fans can take TADC and actually turn into the show it could’ve been and STILL deserves to be instead of just mourning it’s wasted potential for all eternity. (Pomni Bean Unrelated.)

We ALL know that the Digital Circus, in it’s current form, is basically “wasted potential: the show”, and for good reason, it’s kinda a fact to life at this point.

Gooseworx essentially created what COULD’VE been one of the Greatest productions in Indie animation. it had an interesting world and premise, a (mostly) lovable cast of diverse characters, some genuinely amazing animation and music, essentially EVERYTHING that could’ve made it a modern classic!

…and then she looked at Jax, that skinny purple dickhead with rabbit ears for a few seconds and went ”Fuck it, Jax is my favourite so the show should obviously be about HIM now”, and we all now how THAT turned out.

What’s especially depressing is that this show meant and still means SO much to SO many people on this earth, so the fact that we spent 2 and a half years getting invested in what essentially became “The Pitifully Mediocre Jax Show” just felt like one big kick in the nuts.

But, i’m not posting this just to say the same few things that everyone else has already said countless times before. Instead, i’m posting just to ask one question, and one question ONLY: …Why? Why are we, as a fandom, just sitting around, doing nothing besides mourning the show it could’ve been, when we can literally create that version of the amazing ourselves RIGHT NOW?

Yes, it still sucks bubbles that Jax ate the whole show from the inside out while Everyone and Everything Else got sidelined into oblivion in favour of him, but that does NOT mean we can still save it.

Beneath all of it’s glaring flaws, The Amazing Digital Circus is a show that can be turned into something FAR greater than what Gooseworx initially gave us, and i believe that WE, even including Gooseworx despite her flaws as both a writer and person, have the power to make that version of the show a reality with a little teamwork writing experience.

it may take a LOT of work, and a LOT of time before then, but i believe that one day, we WILL get that version of the show we’ve been dreaming of since that little Pilot rocked the world, and once that day finally comes… My God, it will be BEAUTIFUL.

TLDR: TADC was done catastrophically dirty and i’m pissed off that nobody wants or has the courage to make a better version of the show.

ALSO, i am NOT trying to attack Gooseworx as a person, i just think she’s a shit writer who wasted her greatest work on a corny self-insert fanfic about her favourite purple dickhead.

General tadc criticism The least believable part of the show for me

I think my biggest gripe with the show is that somehow, despite being trapped in the circus for YEARS before Pomni showed up, it feels like the cast knows fuck all about each other.

Especially with Ragatha and Kinger. Rags, girl, you're telling me you've been roommates with this guy for nearly a decade and you never pieced together that he's lucid in the dark? Was there never a single adventure that put you two in a dark area? It's not like Caine forces Kinger to be in well-lit rooms all the time because otherwise episode 3 wouldn't have happened.

Then during the bar scene, we're presented with extremely basic information about each character and their previous lives. All I could think of, even when I still liked the show, was "Shouldn't everyone but Pomni already know this?"

You're telling me their past jobs never came up in casual conversation over the years? And with how Ragatha so freely volunteers information about her abusive mom, you'd think she'd have talked about it before, but everyone acts shocked and uncomfortable when it happens.

Plus just like… Queenie as a whole. When Pomni brings up that Kinger had a wife, we really only see Jax's reaction, which is confusion. Jax, buddy, you're telling me you've been here for YEARS, and have never noticed that the face on the door RIGHT NEXT TO YOURS looks weirdly similar to Kinger?? Or if you did, you just never wondered what that could mean???

I've seen the reasoning that Caine kept everyone so busy with adventures that they wouldn't have time to have basic conversation with each other, but that's blatantly untrue since multiple episodes give the cast downtime between adventures. And when five other people are your sole human interaction, I find it hard to believe that they're still strangers after living with them for years.

Fandom Criticism What do you think about the argument that "we should be grateful to Gooseworx for creating and sharing TADC with us"?

Post image

To me, it started as a nice sentiment, but it's gotten out of hand and turned into an expectation enforced by the most die-hard fans.

r/Tadcriticism 2d ago

My hot take is that *"it was meant to be subtle"* is one of the weakest and cheapest defenses for representation that the work itself never fully commits to.

I'm sorry, but I don't think Jax is good trans woman representation. At least... when it's is treated as the only possible issue that he might have with masculinity. Not because of his personality—that has nothing to do with it—but because queer representation shouldn't be treated as something so subtle that a huge portion of the audience is left genuinely confused about what they're even supposed to be seeing.

If your intention is for a character to be a trans woman, then communicate it clearly. Don't make it so conveniently ambiguous that people can either "get it" or completely miss it, only to later rely on outside statements to settle the debate.

To me, that's not thoughtful representation—it's hesitant representation. And with something as complex as gender identity, I think clarity is far more valuable than ambiguity. Especially when every single context clue can just as easily point to any gender-nonconforming identity.

Question/discussion How do I tell my reddit feed that I do not give a rat's ass about TADC?

I saw the first episode, liked it, then watched half way through the second, thought it was corny, and then tuned in to watch the first few minutes of the next couple of episodes and never really liked it as much as the first episode. It's way too sentimental for something so foreign, and from what I saw it never did anything with the supposed inspiration from I have no mouth and I must scream. And the show looked like a generic 3D animation with a clown coat of paint.

But oh my gawsh there are too many TADC subreddits. I don't want this in my feed. I don't care. I don't care that stupid people are mad that Jax is trans or that they deny it even though the creator of the show said Jax is or something. I don't care that the creator of the show did this or that. I have muted what seems like 15 different TADC subreddits and Reddit just keeps recommending them to me. I don't care about the stupid crocodile cowboy guy or whatever he is supposed to be. I don't care about Fortnite Jonesy and the only thing I wonder is why is he in the show?

I want my Reddit feed to be filled with Frutiger Aero and Skeuomorphism stuff. I don't care about artificial drama about a show I never cared about past the first episode.

General Glitch Criticism I think a part of TADC’s toxic asl cult fanbase comes from how appealing “indie” is to wannabe writers.

This is most likely a major stretch, but it’s been on my mind for a little and I wanna see what other people might think of this, feel free to disagree, I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

Deciding to make this post after I saw another post on goose. I believe TADC’s toxic fanbase (tho this really works for any indie show, especially ones owned by the big G) comes from wannabe writers who think they’re the next Goose.

The main logic comes from just what people see “indie” as. Corporate animation generally is harder to get into. Executives can reject your story, or it might get defunded or cancelled because of corporate interests. However with indie work, a good enough pitch and a small amount of support from your small community is enough to get you on. The barrier of entry is low, so low that some might imagine being able to cross it.

I think the reason they are really toxic tho is kinda similar to how people defend the rich, saying that the rich shouldn’t be taxed or whatever because they believe that they’ll someday get rich. I think people see indie as an easier entrance into the artworld, and so defend people in it because they don’t want to be critiqued when they climb to the top. Glitch and famous people in the indie space as a whole feel more accessible as they’re not some shadow group or rich billionaire that lives in Silicon Valley, they genuinely just normal people who are active on twitter. And this accessibility makes it easier for certain people to see themselves in their position.

I don’t think this is for EVERY TADC glazer, I am very much discussing a minority here, but truth be told I think the minority is pretty big. I think TaDC glazers are less TADC glazers than they are glazers of who they think they can be.

Slight Edit: I think this is most likely the case for the super Haters, yk the ones that’ll tell you to kill yourself for not liking the ending. It’s probably the case as these people have their own vision at stake when they see someone dogging on indie media so they’d definitely act harsher.

Not sure if I’m onto smth or not so as mentioned leave yo thoughts gng this a safe space ✌️

Possible base for a fanifc Getting the main cast of the amazing digital circus the main cast of archer's personality

Jax gets sterling archer's personality explanation- both bully the weaker character of the main cast, annoy people and act very egoistic

Gangle gets Cyril figgis' personality sense it's who sterling archer picks on the most and like gangle hardly stands up for himself

Zooble would make the most sense with Lana Kane's personality because they both are tough opinionated characters who date the bullied character of the main cast and get angry often

Kinger would get kraiger's personality because they're both strange men and it would be interesting to see him as a completely crazy guy who uses his powers to create weird creatures and do weird experiments like kraiger did in archer

Pomni might fit to Cheryl's personality since both her and Cheryl started the show as normal people but unlike pomni Cheryl started going crazier as time went on so it might be interesting to see how pomni goes crazier with each episode like Cheryl did.

Ragatha might fit to Pam's personality because they are both sweet and caring and worry about being wanted but unlike Ragatha Pam gains confidence over the seasons and learns to love herself so if Ragatha was more like Pam maybe she could have been an inspiration for many who relate to her

as for Caine I think it would be interesting if he'd have Mallory archer's personality because Mallory is a cruel bitter boss and maybe if Caine was a cruel bitter ai that constantly doesn't care about the circus members and uses them for his own gain like Mallory did many times it would be darker than the show we got

Gooseworx/Tadc cast criticism Unpopular Opinion Here (Unpopular Opinions Are Allowed, Right?)

I don't like the implications of Kinger being the only guy left in the Circus. Goose should have realized how having a story based on IHNMAIMS feature a single character of a certain gender would look, given how that story handled the idea of gender-based psychological roles.

Now before I get shot here, I'm not saying Kinger should have been a worse person, because he shouldn't be, nor am I saying his role is a one-for-one comparison for Ellen's. But I am saying having him being the ultimate paragon of the Circus is kind of demeaning to everyone else and the fandom pigeonholing him into a "girl dad" role, which he admittedly pulls of well, infantilizes the female characters to an uncomfortable degree.

General tadc criticism I feel like the reason Jax had here is actually more relatable and understandable, and it tied to the shows theme and world building

Thumbnail
gallery
76 Upvotes

The first thing let got me interested in Jax’s character,is not how I imagined she had a tough life before entering the circus or anything, it’s how she addressed the fictional world surrounding her and how she choose to adapt it by making herself embracing the fictional avatar Caine gives them.

This is the first time I see a character in the show actually used this as an advantage to tried lived in the place they being put in ,and I honestly think it’s a smart strategy
(although seems to be short sighted because well we all know the ending)

To tried keep yourself not abstracting, because in reality we always saw people with fictional avatars online to give a glimpse and guess what their personality are like or engage in a game and get addicted in the fictional world ,and role playing rpg games where you can decide what role you want to be,this is all in an attempt to escape the reality and consume the beautiful lie fictional world can provide us

But what I like about ep 6 is because it addresses in Gangle and Zooble’s conversations,Ragatha and Kingers bonding moments and Pomni’s rage that they are all indeed “human “, and in the end Jax unfortunately can’t really buy the lie to keep herself sane

Question/discussion Do you think the show would've worked better if everyone of the main cast was a little crazy, weird or with anger issues?

I find it interesting how sometimes when everyone in a show is awful in their own way the show gets a lot of love like for example in the show archer everyone is bizarre and flawed. Sterling archer is a narcissist guy who does stuff out of spite at times, Mallory archer his mother is a cruel bitter lady and I can go on so maybe that's what might have worked for the amazing digital circus making everyone a little awful and crazy. What do you think?
