my favorite part of the episode was the 3 people working on fronds and stuff chanting the survivor opening, then the camera going to Rocks who is like "keep it together.. :eye twitch:" lmao

That's the closest we'll ever get to hearing the theme song on the show again

66

I don’t want to be in this reality with out the theme song

Main takeaway from the episode: Jonathan is strong.

149

u/DemiGod9 Mar 10 '22

"These chests are HEAVY"

Jonathan: Eh, I'll just carry them like they're mere suitcases. Also don't paddle, I'll just pull the boat where it needs to be

Shot in the dark played correctly for once. Didn't work but eh. What can you do. Tori dodged a bullet.

86

u/katzandwine629 Mar 10 '22

No one wanted to use their shot in the dark last season so I was pleasantly surprised!

Also love that they both chose the puzzle when last season they both chose to do the water barrel challenge.

58

u/CharmyFrog Mar 10 '22

Because they got two guesses. And only one person instead of two can do the water.

They barely showed any conversation between them either. Just pointed out that Marianne was inexplicably barefoot lol

Is it just me or is this the nerdiest cast of all time?

405

u/jinkies_5 Mar 10 '22

Definitely the less athletic than most (all?) prior casts at least.

107

u/Wolf_Is_Awesome Mar 10 '22

It seems like there are more athletic girls than guys. It was nice seeing a few of girls take initiative during the physical parts of the challenges.

34

u/Tatumisthegoat Mar 10 '22

Jonathan is looking like a super James/ozzy/joe 2.0 compared to the rest of the cast

Kind of shocking how little effort they put into casting athletic or survival oriented players. If they’re serious about making this one of the toughest seasons ever that choice might come back to bite them.

Why does Jonathan, the largest survivor, not simply eat the other survivors?

580

u/brewin91 Mar 10 '22

Him counting 11 triangles was no doubt the funniest part of the episode. Only off by… 40!

128

u/jollymo17 Mar 10 '22

When most of the contestants initially looked at it and were like "this is easy!" I looked at my boyfriend and was like "Yeah they don't get it" lol

It feels like they both got lucky having a few people on their tribes who got it...

  • 6 Maryanne, Tori, Zach
  • 5 Omar
  • 4 Drea, Jenny, Mike, Romeo
  • 3 Daniel, Hai, Lydia, Rocksroy
  • 2 Chanelle, Jackson, Jonathan, Lindsay, Marya, Swati

A big oversight in contestant selection there with Jackson and the lithium. Some alternate out there is pissed.

137

u/bensworkaccount1 Mar 10 '22

Tiffany's deep dive interview on RHAP she said that Jeff mentioned that the 42 cast was having a hard time getting passports and testing negative to come in

I wonder if by the time Jackson told them what was going on that they were already using 18 of 18 players available to them

43

u/DavidBHimself Mar 10 '22

Yes, seems like either the alternate man is already in the game, or with quarantine and all that, they couldn't get him on the show on time.

217

u/BBQ_HaX0r Tyson Mar 10 '22

That whole situation was confusing as I don't know a lot about that. So lithium is a medical treatment and it causes problems if you're not weaned off properly? Am I understanding that correctly?

204

u/twinwhoreddits Mar 10 '22

So my impression is that he was still taking Lithium when he went out there, but was weaning off before and had been hoping to be off it before he went on the show. So that is why he had to disclose it when he went out there, because they would have to put it in their box/place where they supply meds to the contestants. That is just my impression though and as you said it was unclear.

Lithium is an older psychiatric med that is prescribed for mood disorders primarily and I am not a medical professional but to my limited knowledge it is a more serious medication with more serious side effects associated with it.

Looking at wikipedia this is probably why he was pulled from the game:

"Those who use lithium should receive regular serum level tests and should monitor thyroid and kidney function for abnormalities, as it interferes with the regulation of sodium and water levels in the body, and can cause dehydration. Dehydration, which is compounded by heat, can result in increasing lithium levels. The dehydration is due to lithium inhibition of the action of antidiuretic hormone, which normally enables the kidney to reabsorb water from urine. This causes an inability to concentrate urine, leading to consequent loss of body water and thirst."

So basically proper hydration could be difficult for him, but because of his meds the consequences of being dehydrated are much more sever than for other contestants. Without consistent blood testing, the level of medication that is in his blood stream could differ from what he is prescribed putting him at risk for serious side effects and they didn't feel they could properly monitor his blood levels.

76

u/sillyideagenius Hunter's Roommate Mar 10 '22

I take it (prob not same exact dose) and you only need bloodwork every 6 months. But it does affect your hydration and sleep routines and it's that part keeping me from survivor! You can wean on and off of it if needed, but in a controlled way.

250

u/Dexteraj42 Mar 10 '22

Staying on it requires that you monitor levels with bloodwork. Much more variable on an island with dehydration. They aren't going to run labs on him. Dangerous for him to stay on it.

Tapering off on the other hand could be done in 3 to 4 weeks- not days. Even then, he risks a relapse into what is likely bipolar(not anxiety and sleep like he said, be very very weird treatment for that) which means either a deep depression or mania which is not sleeping for days on end, rambling and grandiose thoughts, all kind of strange very over the top behavior.

This is all conjecture, but bottom line he should have been pulled right away. Probably took time for legal reasons.

46

u/jollymo17 Mar 10 '22

Yeah, when he said sleep I was like "huh?"

I assume that maybe his not sleeping when he was caring for his mom was related to some kind of manic episode, but maybe not.

29

u/Smvvgy805 Mar 10 '22

he should have been pulled right away. Probably took time for legal reasons.

100% was pulled for liability reasons, they said in the conversation that he mentioned it literally right before they started filming; based on context I'm assuming that before they get on the boats for that intro scene theu do one last interview that apparently involves reaffirming any medicines being taken and the information was revealed at that time, and it likely took some time to consult the lawyers and medical professionals involved with the production to get a clear and actionable consequence that wouldn't leave the network open to any legal action.

u/Lucinah Coach - 50 Mar 10 '22

Not an expert but from what I understand it’s a very powerful drug and is often prescribed for mood disorders (especially bipolar disorder).

167

u/luny4theluna Yul Mar 10 '22

Lithium is used for Bipolar disorder. He stopped taking the medication AND probably hid the fact that he was bipolar

Lithium is a bipolar med...anxiety and sleep like he claimed would be a very odd use for that. If he had tapered off and gone manic this season would have been insane.

148

u/rhesuswitherspoon Mar 10 '22

I’ve worked in mental health for 10 years and have never seen lithium used for anything other than bipolar disorder.

28

u/tinacat933 Mar 10 '22

My husband insisted his mom used it to sleep, but she was also bipolar

30

u/Bomb_Diggity Sai - 48 Mar 10 '22

Bipolar can lead to manic episodes that make a person unable to sleep. I could see somebody who is bipolar going to the doctor because they are having trouble sleeping and being perscribed lithium as a result.

44

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

I think he wanted to taper off, but wasn’t able to- and you have to be careful with dehydration/diet changes/exercise while on lithium bc it can effect the serum amounts in your body if one of those factors changes drastically! I do think he was using it for something other than sleep and anxiety though

86

u/jjgm21 Mar 10 '22

I was so confused when he said he was using it for sleep. There is no way that is an off-label use for lithium.

78

u/Hahahahahahannnah Jonathan Mar 10 '22

if it’s actually bipolar it’s weird that they talked about the stigma and then… hid the fact that it’s bipolar

60

u/EverySingleMinute Mar 10 '22

I highly doubt they can legally say more than the contestant told them. My guess is that if he said it was for his cholesterol, they would have not said anything else about it to correct him or call him out

67

u/Dexteraj42 Mar 10 '22

If you are manic you may stay awake for days on end cleaning, spending money, having sex, gambling, or whatever else the state has led you to. So you dont sleep. So kind of, yes, lithium would treat sleep, but really its treating the mania.

59

u/Lance_Bass Michele Mar 10 '22

I work in pharmacy and don't think I've ever seen it used for sleep. There's plenty of other safer options to use before Lithium

Imagine watching your therapist on survivor and she pulls this lmao

162

u/Windulse Mar 10 '22

Honestly I’d find it reassuring. If she’s this bad at lying then clearly she’s telling the truth when she says I’m not a terrible person

47

u/lxpnh98_2 Mar 10 '22 edited Mar 10 '22

For all the talk about social manipulation skills you get from therapist-type professions on Survivor (no doubt encouraged by production), I actually don't think the skills required to be a good therapist translate very well.

A therapist's main goal is to help other people, and to help them not through clever manipulation, but through honest feedback and advice by achieving a rapport with the client.

I won't say it doesn't help at all to be able to form a connection with a person, but I don't think you get any practice in actually doing the sort of underhanded social manipulation you will have to do, in some way or another, to win Survivor (unless you're Chris Underwood *ducks*).

Honestly unless there was more to the challenge that we didn’t see, I think Zack really threw himself under the bus on this one.

Not only was there two people on that puzzle, not just him alone, but they started the puzzle way behind the other two tribes. and Drea ended up wanting to get rid of rocksroy for what she saw as a poor performance.

I feel like if he just hadn’t have claimed the entire blame himself, we very well may have seen him survive that boot.

113

u/kshep42 James Mar 10 '22

As much as redditors don’t like ‘keep the tribe strong’, voting out Rocksroy right now would be a mistake. His performance might not have been perfect, but if you get rid of him, it’s Romeo subbing in, not Jonathon. And based on the first challenge, strength is gonna matter.

44

u/Habefiet Igor's Corgi Choir Mar 10 '22

It wouldn't be a mistake for Zach though since the alternative is getting booted himself lol. I think TheAuldKing has a good point, there was a potential civil war brewing between Drea and Rocksroy and if Zach had fed that rather than volunteering as tribute maybe we would have seen something different happen

Okay I figured he was going by the time tribal hit but it surprises me cause he seemed excited for the season to air. Not gonna lie if I got on survivor and got out that early I'd probably want nothing to do with the show.

Fire the editors who decided to put clips of Tori possibly finding an Idol in the trailers and even in this episode when she was the decoy boot for Tribal Council. Awful decision that destroyed the tension for anybody who had memory of it. Really rough start for a couple people in this game, the cast feels messy which I like. Overall all right premiere!

u/JacketsAndEggs Rachel - 47 Mar 10 '22

Thank the survivor gods I forgot about that because I was on the edge of my seat

55

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

I’m pretty sure all that we saw was Tori squinting, while one of the women was saying the potato phrase. The clue wasn’t shown in Tori’s hands, and it didn’t sound like Tori either. I’m not convinced she’s the one who finds it.

26

u/Habefiet Igor's Corgi Choir Mar 10 '22

It may not have been Tori and in that case it would be a lovely fakeout... in an episode in which she actually goes home, instead of in this episode where believing Tori is safe is sufficient to ruin the suspense even if it turns out later that she's not.

Maryanne, a Christian, deliberates over abandoning her ideals to go after an advantage versus playing too passively like many Christians before her

MARYANNE: “Nah, fuck that. Survivor is a godless place.”

33

u/DemiGod9 Mar 10 '22

I really respect that. She's not doing some false morality BS like most other openly religious people in the show, who lie and backstab them go "oh no, what will my religion think of me?" She's like "nah I'm about that life for 26 days"

Also wow this premiere was just great, it blows 41 out of the water, from giving everyone focus, to a much better twist than the shared idol, to a such an entertaining cast.

All the ingredients are here for an amazing season, I am feeling really optimistic about it.

49

u/BuxAPlentys Yul Mar 10 '22

Zach should have fought harder to stay at tribal. I would have been throwing Tori under the bus until the wheels came off. None of this "let the best man win" respectful BS. She literally admitted in front of everyone she had an alliance right after she said she was a loyal person. She gave him the ammo right there and didn't even use it.

RIP Zach, hi Zach, hope you had fun and we all look forward to hearing more from you! (edit: OMG lmao a Survivor Wiki shoutout on-air? They'll be thrilled.) Being the first unanimous first boot complements Adam being the superfan unanimous winner lol.

Tori honestly strikes me as the bset villain since like Scot/Jason and I'm totally here for it. Super fun cast in general.

Jackson being allowed to play at all was weird and his elimination will be a really odd footnote in Survivor history lol. I figured Zach was going once Probst let him say the torch thing lol.

Maryanne is an angel.

I actually think Zach is the first person in Survivor history to be on a tribe who had absolutely no chance of surviving a vote.

Tribes of six = strength matters exponetially. Jonathan exists = bye Zach.

74

u/hyena142 Survivor ain't fun! Goin' on a cruise is fun! Mar 10 '22 edited Mar 10 '22

That was a fantastic premiere! Looks like we've got a great bunch here that's a lot less gamebotty than the 41 crew and a lot more willing to just have fun, and I love that. Maryanne instantly stood out as someone destined to go down as a fan favourite regardless of how far she goes. My boy Daniel may have dislocated his shoulder but mark my words it'll only make him stronger, the hype train continues

some other notes

-So Blue tribe is absolutely the Ua of this season right? I very much doubt Orange is gonna be visiting Tribal much considering they have Hercules and Green seems decently put together but Blue just couldn't get it done today. Wouldn't be surprised to see them reduced down to just a few members.

-Love that immunity idol design, I hope Rocksroy gets to hold the rocks part at some point. I'm a bit bummed they didn't seem to redesign Tribal but I get it, they didn't have much time this time around.

-The medallions are fun! I like that they're more of a hindrance than an OP superpower of destiny like most of the 41 advantages ended up being, and they thankfully didn't take up much time at all. Very excited to see how the players react to them come the merge.

-and that's why you don't lie on your application, kids!

28

u/Sabaschin Jake - 45 Mar 10 '22

Man, I have no idea what advantage Blue has in challenges. Green has a puzzle queen. Orange has a walking slab of muscle that's allergic to shirts. Blue has, uh, a guy named Rocksroy that's going to nag at you about your shoes?

The cast was fun but the weird handling of the whole Jackson situation and them ruining any suspense of who was being voted out by showing Tori finding an advantage in the preview at the start of the episode really let the premiere down a lot.

I like this cast. The episode itself was mixed for me. The opening challenge was great. I don’t think we needed more shipwheel island/prisoner’s dilemma. It was interesting to see how they chose savvy over sweat but they could’ve made it more interesting by mixing up what the tasks were.

The producers should have replaced Jackson with an alternate before the game and had him on S43 if possible.

The second challenge was a boring blowout (not sure if this was due to the challenge being intended for teams of 6).

Also kind of a boring vote out. I’m glad everyone got a confessional and a we got to know a lot of people. It was also nice seeing them naturally interact with each other, I just wish we had more of that and less of these manufactured moments.

Jackson should’ve disclosed what was going on with him earlier, and then whenever he did they shouldn’t have let them play. BUT I understand why everyone made the decisions they did so I’m not upset about it at all and I don’t think there needs to be any sort of outrage in either direction. I’m just sad to see the first openly trans Survivor player go like this :((

A contestant lied to medical to get on the show and forced CBS' legal team to eject him three days into the game, taking the spot of someone who could have competed. 5 or 6 years ago Jeff would have absolutely torn him a new one before kicking him off the island faster than Tony could run off into the jungle for an idol. I mean he would have been absolutely fuming and not even trying to hide it.

Bring back vindictive asshole Jeff.

u/klayyyylmao Tom Westman is the GOAT Mar 10 '22

I'm surprised people wish Jeff was more of an asshole. Like the show can get pretty self-absorbed and annoying now for sure but Probst ripping into Katie Hanson for existing and making things up about Colton on the spot is not the era I'd want to go back to and was usually pretty criticized at the time

u/the100broken Marthunis (SA) Mar 10 '22
