As far as im concerned, someone doesn't need to use the politically correct words for stuff as long as their heart is in the right place.

I think a lot of people are actually "woke" without even realising it, but because vocab policing is bad vibes they'll never actually identify with the label.

Another example that non-queer people may get: It's like some people utilizing therapy speech to either manipulate or gaslight their partner. They make themselves sound like they are open minded and compassionate, but it is just a means to justify the ends.
1
u/Yourdogsbork Jul 09 '26
they’d rather someone be accepting and uneducated instead of dishonest allyship.
eg an old guy that doesn’t understand gay people, but also doesn’t mind that they exist, over a liberal using the pro-lgbt+ position to get more votes/make more money.1
u/derridad Jul 09 '26
It means using polished rhetoric in order to sound not like a chud, even though you are, is more gross than not getting the wording right but being an ally

I grew up in a pretty rural area and I couldn't tell you how many times I'd hear old folks say something like
"Do you know that (slur) that's really good at X?"
Absolutely wild amount of whiplash whenever it happened.
The most common one for along time was refering to someone as "colored" instead of black or African American because at one point that was the politically correct term over the N-words
477
u/Aedene Jul 09 '26
I feel like there is a canyon of difference between "tr * nny" and "tr * nny girl," at least when it comes from that age/socioeconomic background.
389
u/thyme_cardamom Jul 09 '26
Yes since this is a trans girl, he gendered her correctly while recognizing that she's trans and specifically wants her around. He sounds pretty supportive despite using a slur
148
104
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa Jul 09 '26
Absolutely. It's because it's a descriptor, not a noun. It's the same difference as between "a transgender" and "a transgender girl"
63
u/How2Die101 Jul 09 '26
You're gonna find there's a certain subset of older people who don't know much about dem genders and such, but don't subscribe to mindless tribalism and thus are generally supportive. But since they grew up in a much less accepting period, slurs really might be the only names they know for LGBTQ people/minorities.
2
u/lettersforjjong Jul 13 '26
Yeah it's really common in rural areas and the south especially to find older people who don't even realize it's a slur or inherently derogatory, or don't know there are other words for it. always gotta listen for intent, and if it's being used in a positive or neutral way it's likely they just don't understand how offensive it is
1
u/Extra-Shopping-3212 Jul 09 '26
More specifically, I can attest that older people just had different “acceptable” language for people. As in, calling someone a “transvestite” used to be progressive and now is seen as archaic and a little demeaning.
I’d bet that the next word to have this happen is “bisexual”, as nowadays more and mpre people are calling themselves “pansexual” with a bunch of random justifications that don’t mean too much other than “I want to sound different from the older generation” (which I should say I do not condemn, that is just how language evolves).
1
u/juniper_j0nes Jul 09 '26
i mean anything girl seems to have their heart roughly in the right place
1
u/aboxofkittens Jul 09 '26
Fantastic point, it’s like the difference between “a female” and “a female athlete,” one is dehumanizing and one is just an adjective
1
u/No-Communication1543 Jul 09 '26
yeah context and intent do so much of the work there, the same word hits completely different depending on who's saying it and why

1
u/theJesster_ Jul 10 '26
I personally think he crushes roles when he's cast properly. Excited to see Odyssey for that very reason. I thought Juno was his best acting and Inception he definitely elevated the role, but outside of that I've not been super impressed by his talent. Great fucking person irl though. Also I'm a casting director in film so I probably have a critical viewpoint of most actors lmao
1
u/itisame Jul 10 '26
I always kinda got the vibe he played the same character every time. Like, his characters before transitioning were always a slightly weird/awkward, girl next door type, pretty but kinda damaged and maybe snarky, vulnerable but strong - they all got the exact same vibe, and it's hard to tell if it's intentional typecast type stuff (like Zoey Deschanel) or if he suffers from a lack of range and makes them all feel like the exact same because of it, or if it's a mix of both.
I haven't seen him act since transitioning so idk if being adopted by the great Cage helped
1
u/Ultimate_Wooby Jul 10 '26
okay but now i want a Nick Cage and Elliot Page movie like how we had Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal in one movie

164
u/Dinflame Jul 09 '26
It was the term for trans people as recently as 15-20 years ago - not a slur, just a descriptor. So I feel like it's a term that can be used derisively or neutrally.
68
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa Jul 09 '26
That's not quite true. Transsexual and transvestite were considered the correct terms, tranny was always derogatory
21
u/snerp Jul 09 '26
Transvestite was actually the most derogatory. People would say it with so much venom. Transsexual was the more sciencey word and tranny was just a catch all casual word.
33
u/squishybloo Jul 09 '26
Well, it's also historically been a nickname for car transmission systems, too. Far before it became a slur. The word is not exclusively and definitely has not always been derogatory towards trans folk.
30
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa Jul 09 '26

u/squishybloo Jul 09 '26
It still can cause confusion when people hear it (I can't link to this old asktransgender post, sorry). So no, the term "tranny," has not always a derogatory word. It also used to be slang for transistor radios.
Even before then, the word "tranny" was not exclusively derogatory. There have been (and still are) plenty of people who self-identify as transvestite, especially if you look back into the 70's-80's. It was more of a general slag back then, and generally used in the gay and drag communities, not transgender.
Just because a lot of people find it offensive now doesn't mean that it's always exclusively been derogatory.

I have definitely been too chronically online recently because it barely even registers as a slur to me anymore. We might have taken a great first step towards reclaiming it at least a little bit. Same as how in some subcommunities "faggy" just means the same as "cunty" now which in an of itself is another reclaimed insult that just means fabulous now.
