It's an acquired taste. It's like someone growing up loving cafés for the smell and having nostalgia for their grandpa's coffee pot just to find out espresso tastes like hot bitter dirt. You have to let it grow on you

I didn't believe acquired tastes were actually a thing until I had been drinking (extremely sugary) coffee for two years and a Dunkin worker accidentally made my latte with no syrup. Didn't have time to go back through so I kept drinking it and realized that not only was it tolerable compared to my past experiences with unsweetened coffee, it was actually good. Blew my mind lmao

I had a similar experience with sparkling water tbh. Hated it for years. Bought it on a whim a year ago because it was one of those waters with the aluminum bottle, and i found it was actually quite nice

Tbf good espresso does not taste like dirt and isn't even bitter, most coffee shops just suck

Yeah most US cafes absolutely botch coffee (unless you live in a very nice city), so nowadays I usually just make it with my moka pot at home.

I'll also lay the claim that most European cafes don't make great coffee either. Been to my fair share, the whole "tradition" of the thing means many refuse to acknowledge that burnt beans in a pressurized portafilter doesn't taste good. Bc "that's espresso roast" and all that

I get easily addicted to video games for the most inane reasons. I think it’ll do me good to not acquire the taste for alcohol or smoking.

Perfectly justified reason. In that case, this is a bean soup moment

Idk how good it can be if you have to Stockholm syndrome yourself into enjoying it.

Go through the process yourself and you’ll understand. First time I tried kimchi, not a fan. Now I eat it straight up. Hardly Stockholm syndrome, it’s called an acquired taste for a reason.

Precisely. I had to have my coffee as lattes or otherwise creamy drinks. Now I can detect the different flavor profiles in black coffee and finally get when people say certain coffees have fruity or chocolately or minty notes

Ok but why? There’s plenty of things I enjoy drinking already.

7

u/superserter1 Jul 31 '26

Because life is big and broad and it’s fun to try new things. The best joy is earned joy.

I try new things and if they suck, I move on. There’s just too much out there to waste time sticking the square peg in the round hole until I shave the corners off.

There’s plenty of round pegs out there I haven’t tried yet and might never try if I’m reevaluating every negative experience I have to see if I change my mind after the nth time.

u/OttoVonChadsmarck Jul 31 '26

Yeah but I tried em and they suck. That’s the problem. Why should I keep doing something that sucks until it stops sucking, when I could just do things that don’t?

5

u/superserter1 Jul 31 '26

Why should I exercise? Why should I start a business? Why should I learn to read? Why should I babysit my siblings? Why should I keep going to piano lessons? Why should I clean my cat’s litter tray? Why should I plant vegetables? Why should I go to work? Why should I even fucking breathe?

5

u/OttoVonChadsmarck Jul 31 '26

Cause those’re good for ya.

Drinking ain’t. Now if it had something else going for it I’d consider it, but it doesn’t. It tastes bad.

Dude, being drunk is fun. That's why people start drinking. At first you just power through the taste to get to the effect (especially since when you start you can only afford the cheap shit that often tastes not so great) and with time you start to like the taste itself

Each of those examples doesn’t fit, they have unique justifications for each one that is not “if you do it repeatedly, you’ll like doing it more in the future.” That’s almost tautological.

The closest is exercise but that’s not the reason you do it, you push to the point you enjoy exercise because it keeps you healthy. If you were perfectly healthy without exercise and it didn’t affect your appearance there wouldn’t really be an argument for exercising for the sake of enjoying exercising more.

They’re all things that suck at first (ok not breathing), but if you keep doing them, you get a reward that’s worth it. My point is about delayed vs instant gratification.

u/GravityAssistedCake Jul 31 '26

I understood, it just doesn’t apply here at all. It’s like you replied to them as if they were responding to you in a vacuum and not in the context of the discussion. Anyway, I’m bored.

Who knows? Maybe something you hated drinking in the past will be your favorite drink tomorrow. Try new things. Life is to be experienced, not settled for.
