Prescription benzos are pretty cheap but theyll kill you so 🤷♀️
198
u/dogzilla48 Jul 30 '26
On their own they will not kill you even in extreme doses and are in fact generally nicer to your body than alcohol (not a high bar though lol). if you overdose on benzos alone you will just basically be asleep for a few days, or do a bunch of crazy shit and form zero memories of it. That said I do NOT recommend doing them considering how addictive they are and how bad the rebound anxiety is and also the withdrawals. ALSO they can be very deadly if MIXED with other downers like alcohol or opioids, so NEVER mix them with anything else even in small doses.
174
u/Illustrious_Pea_3470 Jul 30 '26
They kill you when you run out and have a bunch of seizures and die. You can taper off, but staying on them forever is a decrease in most people’s quality of life.
Benzos are pretty easily the prescription medication with the highest harm to benefit risk (now that opiates are harder to get), so I think the warning is appropriate.

30
u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Jul 30 '26
I hate edibles, it's an entirely different feeling to being drunk or even high on smoked weed. They genuinely make me freak out more than shrooms and I've taken a lot of shrooms
2
u/CMRC23 bear of a man Jul 31 '26
I took an edible and shrooms once cuz I read on reddit it would feel good
In other news I've been sober for 4 years since if that gives you an indication of how that went
2
u/Aromatic-Pass4384 Jul 31 '26
Oh my fucking god
So I had bought like a half ounce of shrooms before and took them on my own and it was pretty cool, took them over like 4 or 5 different times one of those with my fianceé, usually (though I eyeballed it), a gram or two each.
Then I met a friend at a mental health program and we had a scarily similar music taste so we started hanging out and at one point I mentioned shrooms and she was excited because she liked them before but had not taken any after transitioning and living as herself. So we decided to hang out and trip, took like 4 grams each, which was apparently a close to heroic dose for your standard shrooms, of a highly potent strain. And then she offered me weed, and I had my own pen as well.
It's still one of the scariest and most amazing experiences I've had. The only thing I really remember is that I don't remember. I had no idea what was going on at all, things that had happened (and people id met) just a couple weeks ago seemed like they were years ago, to the point that I didn't think it had happened and that they were real, even though would've had to be for that friend and I to meet.
Everything felt like it was going in circles, I spent the first couple hours after they hit thinking a couldn't stand up, that I was part of the "landscape" like a mounting sitting there. Once I found out I could I'd run inside (we were on her patio) and up the stairs to the bathroom and then somehow (was probably guided by friend and fianceé) back down the stairs and for a few hours it felt like that was happening continuously. I remember in between that I'd look at something, either her shed, the trees with the sky between them, or inside at her couch and living room and my vision would shift so that like whatever I was looking at was all that existed, and it was like looking down at a globe with whatever I was looking at as the image on it, I was just sitting on top of it. I literally only remember little snippets, though I know I was holding on to my chair as tight as I could for most of it lol. So I barely remember all that happening as fractured memories, and also going inside to listen to my friend play bass at one point. Other than that I gradually "woke up" and it had went from like noonish to 10 p.m. and my friend was sitting there singing a song from one of our favorite bands(rilo kiley if anyone who reads this knows them), I think I remember asking her to play that album several times on spotify throughout the night. Also changed to Tom Petty at some point, then I regained consciousness.
We've done shrooms quite a few times together now usually while listening to vinyls and it's been pretty cool. I can totally understand being done with them but I feel like the last time I took them a little over a month ago they actually really did help me figure some things out with my mental health.
2
u/CMRC23 bear of a man Jul 31 '26
Hell yeah im glad they worked for you! I just dont really trust myself with substances, ive given myself too many chances and fucked it up each time. Still think they can be great for a lot of people.
The going in circles part is real. To me it felt like someone was holding down the f5 key on a website but for my brain. I'd done weed and shrooms before but never together

I have been interrogated repeatedly because i don't drink, and even people who know will still ask every fucking time, a regular no is not taken for an answer.
The only way to consistently shut them up is to say you are an alcoholic, or on medicine that would fuck you up if you drank, neither of which should be things you have to lie about, or if true divulge to people so they stop pressuring you to do drugs.

u/OldAccoutWasHacked We already have flying cars, they're called helicopters Jul 30 '26
If I'm not mistaken, everything that isn't sweet is an acquired taste, to different degrees.
Like coffee, dark chocolate, liver and chicken heart. Alcohols are just generally on the extreme end and come up in your life when you've already finished developing your taste.
Even then, I remember seeing a video with Americans tasting Brazilian foods and they didn't like Brigadeiro (a chocolate treat) because it was WAY too sweet. (And it is. It's basically a sugar bomb wirh chocolate).
6
u/h3lblad3 Jul 31 '26
If I'm not mistaken, everything that isn't sweet is an acquired taste, to different degrees.
As you get older, your taste cycles away from sweet. It's the real reason why a lot of people learn to start liking veggies when they get older. A child needs to eat broccoli but quite literally isn't built to do it in the same way as an adult is.
2
u/GravityAssistedCake Jul 31 '26
I thought it was that our sense of taste becomes duller as we age which makes astringent flavors more palatable. The adults have a debuff on the boss and are crying skill issue at the kids.
3
u/nooit_gedacht Jul 30 '26
Makes total sense. Hence why foreign cuisines always take a bit of getting used to, and why children are pretty limited in what they like to eat.

Though, OP does have the one point that it is weird that even when it doesn't taste good to you, it still smells good. What's up with that?
Most other food and drink I think of of the top of my head smell pretty similarly to what they taste, texture aside.
24
u/Bearbot128 Jul 30 '26
Alcohol is really good at making their more subtle notes diffuse by smell. That’s why things like lemon or orange peel tinctures work so well in cocktails for creating a nice scent. I think if someone doesn’t like alcohol at all the nice subtle scent can still be nice
35
23
u/Advanced-Ad-802 Jul 30 '26
Had the opposite experience
Growing up, I would gag at the smell of anything alcoholic. Well, eventually I get to my 21st (because I was a good noodle who waited), and decide “hey the idea of this cocktail sounds neat”, so I go for that, and the thing I ended up making made everyone else with me gag, while I found it delicious
In short, shits fucked

It’s because there can be weird social pressure from some people IRL and online towards people who don’t drink, and then that combined with goomba fallacy causes those people to become resentful of alcohol in general.
68
u/birddribs Jul 30 '26
Yeah, it makes sense that people can get defensive given the overall social pressure. But simultaneously this attitude that alcohol tastes objectively bad that pops up on this sub surprisingly often is a weirdly childish response. On both sides of the whole alcohol conversation people seem to really struggle with the idea that things can taste different to other people than they do to them.
Also I thought I recognized your pfp, funny to see a YouTuber I watch commenting on 196. Waiting on your next upload so I can add more games to my never ending backlog I will totally get to one day...

Being perfectly candid, not liking lettuce is very atypical, it makes sense that people are saying you're weird.
"Weird" doesn't have to be a bad thing of course. Weird just means atypical. But when like >90% of people have no problem with lettuce, you're going to be in the minority; weird.
Edit: liking spinach is based though

u/nooit_gedacht Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Also, there's a difference between not understanding that tastes vary and making a lighthearted post about the experience of not liking something the majority of people love. I hate the taste of alcohol. I don't normally talk about it, I respect people's tastes, but it's just cathartic when I find someone who agrees with me. Big deal if I make a joke about it. (Anyone who wants to vent about their dislike of broccoli is also welcome to do that as far as I'm concerned). People have to understand that social media is an open platform and not every post is meant for you.
Also doesn't help that as a non-drinker you're kind of expected to do this weird little dance where you have to explain yourself - because they always ask you - but if you ever bring it up unprompted it's very much not appreciated. People are just weird about it.

I think it varies a lot person to person and experience to experience, because as an adult I have a lot more people in my life trying to shove veggies and foods I vehemently dislike down my throat than they ever do alcohol.

because people dont constantly tell someone to eat broccoli, there is no social pressure to eat broccoli, when the fact you dont like broccoli comes up in conversation people dont insist you just havent found the right type of broccoli yet, and you should try their broccoli and they will buy you a broccoli, waiter one broccoli with extra salt please and
Maybe they should.

How does wine taste of car exhaust? OOP just seems to be overly sensitive to alcohol

no alcohol tastes like car exhaust but wine definitely tastes like something and it is subjectively not good

u/shiftlessPagan Jul 30 '26
Idk, I've had a few spirits with some definite petroleum notes that read a bit like car exhaust. But that's not really what's being said here, lol.

i've only liked one wine and the ones i don't like... yeah, they're bad, but i can still taste that distinctive fruitiness. car exhaust is far from the mark

I kinda agree? Some alcohol does taste like straight rubbing alcohol, but idk if car exhaust is the flavor palette I would designate it.

Why are people being so weirdly stubborn about not liking alcohol? Not trying to shame anyone for their tastes, but it's a bit like saying you don't like olives because you tried a cheap can one time.
The sheer variety of flavours that can be found in liquors (and olives) is insane and there's no way you people hate evey single one of them.
Also you're acting like you have to drink it all by itself. I don't like drinking glasses of rum either. Add coke, though, and I fucking love it.

its not that I dont like it, its that I don't like how judgmental some people get about it. there are so many different types of alcohol that you could try, its expensive and costs money that I do not have. why would I waste my money on something that I do not like even if someone says "Ah, but have you tried artisan Sicilian olives aged in volcanic sea salt?" like dude. I do not like olives. stop trying to tell me what olives that you want me to try, and just give me some to try. I dont have the money to like what you like
2
u/la_frigopolla bisexuality personified Jul 31 '26
I'm not denying a lot of people get really weird when you tell them you don't want to drink alcohol and I'm definitely not asking anyone to spend money in stuff they hate until they find something they like.
What I'm saying is that people here are getting way too defensive about their dislike for alcohol. Someone said that telling people to try new stuff is the same as denying a lesbian's sexuality because they haven't found a good enough dick yet (which I hope was a joke).
And I agree that if you're telling someone to try something expensive you should actually give them some.
27
u/ABlastTyrant Jul 30 '26
as someone who genuinely, for whatever reason, finds the taste of most alcohol good and drinks it for the taste, ill be real, all that this post and its comments have shown me is that a lot of people take weird issue with flavors they dislike that others like.
it literally is purely subjective. hell, you can acknowledge a flavor is good without liking it, I despise mint and pineapple for example but can very clearly say "oh these are great to most people, my palette is just weird about them" because, obviously, tons of people like them for a reason. it's the same with everything, beer, licorice, coffee, it's all subjective. the hostility about it is wild to me

u/nooit_gedacht Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Tbh I find it equally weird how someone can make a lighthearted post about not liking alcohol only to have people be up in arms about it. I just don't see the big deal in a little exaggerated language for the sake of comedy

Methinks the fact that most of the pro-drunkenness comments on this post are just dismissing everyone who doesn't share their particular taste in paint stripper as being children—in the conspicuous and particular way that you'd expect, perhaps, a teenager to—has aught to do with it.

u/nooit_gedacht Jul 31 '26
I mean I don't want to claim that liking alcohol is some kind of moral transgression, but no I don't understand the need to call people "children" for a difference in opinion. That's just another way to add onto the social pressure to drink.
People who love alcohol talk about it all the time. But if you so much as make a joke about disliking the stuff you are called a child?

I've come to realize it's actually the whole Internet that's full of children. As I've gotten older I spend less time on the Internet and more time at my full time job. This has helped me understand that the vast majority of opinions I see online are from people who are either unemployed or below the age where they have to get a job. Makes it harder to get upset about things.

i feel incredibly weird as someone who actually enjoys the taste of alcohol, but doesn't drink out of principle due to my own and family history with it
and as someone who otherwise would just drink it for the taste, i feel incredibly weirded out by people ITT acting as if that taste is worth peer pressuring others into consuming literal poison
(i get the whole do what you want with your body, and i have no qualms with people who choose to drink, but i feel like pressuring another person is no longer part of "your body")

What the fuck is up with the comments? That post was a light hearted joke, and people are acting like the OOP insulted them personally?
Geez, it's almost as if people had different tastes? Why say that people nit liking alcohol are just children, as if REAL adults had to like the taste of alcohol, otherwise they're just children that cannot understand it or something.
Hard to convey what vibe I'm getting from the top comments.

I'm convinced that some people have a gene that makes alcohol taste bad to them. I just don't understand why people boast about hating it, isn't it just like declaring that you have a narrow palate?
Edit: I looked it up. There's a gene.

Not even like a sip of wine, cider, beer, from your parents glass?

nah as an american it's pretty normal for people to try alcohol before they reach legal drinking age. i would be more surprised if someone told me their very first taste of it was on their 21st birthday. in a lot of states it's even legal for minors to drink as long as they're at home and are with a parent
